the scheme is great, but the style you have used when painting it makes it even better
any chance of close up pics of the free hands on the rhino's please? they look brilliant, but cant see them too well.

Wow, nice stuff. Are those Rhinos free hand painted? Or did you make a decal? Either way, they are fantastic. Can't wait to see the Dreadnoughts.

Frigging incredible. Honestly some of the best freehand (at least it looks like freehand) that I have seen. Also, love the marble effect that is going on with the rhino paint scheme. I cant wait to see this army completed.

I have to agree, these are beautiful. they are some of the best looking Rhino's I've seen. I would live to see a tutorial on how you created that marble stone effect. its very effective.

Though that third Rhino seems a bit NSFW. Lol.
I must say, all in all, spectacular painting.

Looking forward to seeing the rest, especially the LR!

Thanks for all the kind words!
I'm incapable of using decals for some strange reason... all my stuff is hand painted.
I'll try and get better shots of the murals on the Rhinos. I'm still learning how to photograph mini's
@StubbyGB - I was thinking about doing a tutorial on the land raider start to finish. The marble would be included in that. But the quick run down is...
Prime white,
Watered down graveyard earth weathering,
Graveyard earth toothbrush splatter,
Devlan mud wash in spots that need to be darker,
Touch up highlights or spots that got too dark with bleached bone and skull white where needed,
Chaos black/codex gray mix for the cracks (look at cracks in side walks or concrete and such for shape)
@Brother Captain Andrecus - Thank you.... but what is NSFW
@Mohaniker - I AM DOING NOTHING ON THE DP'S!! I love how the look and play. I hate drop pods in all other respects! (modeling/painting) If I do murals on them, they'll just get scratched up from the door opening every game.
I should post more pics with better quality Sunday (and start on that land raider b/c I'd take a needle in the eye over painting on those DP's this weekend!!)

Those look....
FREAKIN AWESOME!
I love how they look like they actually have been in service for more than a single battle... Most people paint as if their models came fresh off an assembly line. And your hand-painted designs are just stellar. top rate work! Definitely get those dreds done! They have to look equally freakin awesome for your tourney!

Been a while since I've updated. Between Apocalypse, Commissions, Beer, Work, and Shear Laziness I haven't got a lot painted however I am undefeated in non-flyer, non-titan Apocalypse and I had a reputation to uphold....
So I've started on the Land Raider. This pretty much keeps me excited before I have to deal with the horrid drop pods and mass assembly line troops. I've got everything planned on it for the most part. I still need to find 2 small murals I can put on the top, but they cannot be complicated. I'll do skulls or symbols. Something along those lines anyway.
The prep work involves getting a plan or a basic idea and placement.
First up! Hand draw your mural on the surface. Luckly I prime white so this was relatively easy. I hand drew mine, however if you lack in the artistic area you can print it on paper scaled down to the size you want and place a piece of carbon paper under the picture. Simply trace the design onto the surface. (Your surface pretty much needs to be flat to do this... land raiders would be bad for this!)
For the Marble effect, I take graveyard earth and kinda randomly mix it with water. You'll want to keep it more paint than water... (That is the best description I can give.. Us artist types just kinda stir stuff together and hope for the best. ) Next you take an old toothbrush, a roommates toothbrush or an ex girlfriends toothbrush and wet it slightly and dip it in the paint and run your finger over it so its flicks out. Do this over the sink until you get the desired spatter pattern. Now just flick it all over the model and make a big mess.
Next I mixed graveyard earth with water about 50/50 and did a runny weathering technique from the recesses and overlaps. On the flat parts use the same paint but quickly wipe your thumb over the wet paint and smear it.
I now took devlun mud and washed in the cracks and did more smear and weathering techniques over the previous layer. All these thin transparent layers will be very subtle. Your eye picks up on all the layers and makes a bland tank look much better than a solid color.
Finally I mix skull white and water to a milky consistency and hit all the high points and large flat areas. This mutes all the previous layers while making a new layer in itself. At this point it will look very messy.... because it is! After all the detail and murals are added, which are all darker colors, it averts your eyes away from my horrible sloppyness and creates the desired effect of marble.
And here's all the art that will be adorning my Land Raider. It will all be changed slightly here and there to fit more in with 40k fluff.
Shwuuu...
That's it for now! Hope you all like it so far!

O_o Oh, god of miniatures, hallowed be thy name. Two questions:
1) Are you planning to do anything special for the Tactical Squads? Details on the shoulder armor, etc?
2) If you ever end up with a standard bearer, what piece would you use for all that empty space? Something from the Sistine Chapel again?

Hey fellas!
@NinjaPenguin : 1) Wasn't planning on any super fanciness on the tac's yet. I need the whole army done in about 2 months. I might come back and add some at a later time though. 2) I mostly play DA's so I have a banner guy now (terminator) I want the banner to be classical art. I haven't put any thought into it yet as our codex is mildly outdated compared to the new dex. So I have plenty of time to think about it. However suggestions are welcome.
@everyone : Thanks for all the kind words!
I'm excited to have mural 1 of 5 done so I thought I would share.
If you have any constructive criticism please throw it my way.
Wheeee!!!

Didn't get much painting done this weekend. Had a RTT saterday. (My first place present to myself was 2 shiny new Valks) Then Mother's day on Sunday I took my mom to see star trek. But anywho... I got home from work and went straight to painting to make up some lost time and here is what I've done.

@FoxPhoenix1358: My mom loves Star Trek. I could take it or leave it.... but I do enjoy most sci-fi things. My mom raised me on X-files, Star Trek, and Star Wars! (so I got lucky with that)
@JD21290: Thanks for the compliments but I am no where near as talented as the eavy metal team. They can crank out so much in a short amount of time and they have to paint a certain way to fit in with all the other GW products. And those GD fella's are so far out of my league it's not even funny. However someday I hope to achieve their level. (and Yes I was a traditional artist before I got into mini's)
@everyoneelse: Thanks!
Onward!
I finished the other mural today.... Maybe.... I can't decide about two things. 1) the bottom half of the Emperor's robes... I don't like it but don't know if it's worth fixing. 2) The other sides mural is bigger. To balance both sides, should I paint the sky or background on the piece or add little floating cherubs?
Constructive Crit needed please.

Sorry, but thats all bs.
Eavy metal painters wish they could paint like this.
they do "colour by numbers" painting.
they simply follow the detail on a model.
you bring it to lief by adding alot more detail and realistic toutches.
this is up to GD par, you would have no problems taking the vehicles catagory.

These are beautiful indeed, I love the nonstandard painting style, puts me in mind of the very old army painting I used to see when I started out, including a minotaur by John Blanche with the Mona Lisa painted onto it's back banner!

Now here's an artist who takes real pride of place in his art work. Very good work on the hand drawn, then painted, murals on your vehicles, and the faux marble effect on the outer vehicle armour is top rate too. I've finished my Infantry! *sigh of relief* However I left my camera at a friends house, so I'll be sure to go grab it after work and will post later tonight the infantry and better shots of my Drop Pods.
I thinking about expanding this blog to everything to do with my chapter. So after the tournament and tourny army you can look forward to my honor guard, chapter master (with rules set), Land Raider Terminus, and my take on a titan as I want to really flex my imagination.
@ brother Vespasian = I have a friend doing the conversions for my chapter banner. He's modeling it after the banner in the command squad picture of the marine codex. Which is EPICLY big and will give me plenty of room to do some neat things on. He's also doing my 9 other honor guard to go with the banner that I will probably post on this log even after I get this particular list done.
@ Chimera_Calvin = I'm glad I could inspire you to your drawing board. Send me a link when you start your project.
@ EzeKK = Semi funny story... I won those two Valks at an RTT like 2-3 months ago for 1st place prize. I took that picture cuz I need like 6 more and as a joke I wanted them to reproduce... So last Saterday I won 3rd place at an even larger RTT and got... 2 more valks... *mayber theres something to this valk reproduction process*
@ Wolf = I hope I'll do well in paint but last year there were some A-mazing armies there. So it is a very tough competition. (last year I showed up with the grey legion) So the fact that I'll get a paint score will tickle me pink.
@ Tauzor = you sound like some of my local friends. We're all being as..jerkholes to each other about painting so we all get done on time.
Now to finish my two Iron Clads, 1/2 a Land Raider, and 1/2 a Vulkan counts as! (oh yea a display board as well)

I had an old display board for my square base empire army so my friend donated some terrain and pinned the trees up and made the snazzy dark angel pillar for me in exchange for some free hand work on his wave serpent. I tried to match the grass and trees to my local wildlife. (as I really do live in a beautiful state... not much other than pretty though) In some of the pictures below you can see the trees in the back ground and the grass and the board all in one. I think I really captured the look. I would have liked to put more time in the display board but I literally have less than two weeks! So anywho, here's what I've done so far...
The Board (and freaky local weather to boot)
Tac 1
Tac 2
Assault squad and Speeder
Termies
IC Dread 1
IC Dread 2
The Board with mini's of doom!
All I have left is 2 whole Ironclads and 30% of a Land Raider and Vulcan's back banner! (freehand on banner if time)
Off to paint 40k cherubs on the LR.

I'm really interested in how you do your streaky weathered white actually. Oddly enough I have almost the exact same scheme as you, white marines with red trim, but I throw in spots of brown leather and green power weapons/lights/eyes to break up the colors. However, that streaky warm white is exactly what I wanted but couldn't figure out how to do. Tutorial time maybe?

I started my Battle fleet gothic army to match my army the other day. My opinion on John Blanche's work is basically hit or miss I love some of his pieces, However I dislike just as much of it. (See daemons codex...) In Battle Fleet Gothic I personally think he nailed it. I love all his art work for the series and I think it captured the gritty 41st century it was going for. So I decided to try and replicate Blanche's works on my fleet while still remain in my own chapters theme. The basic "plan" is to paint the whole thing slightly whimsical and splotchy and then tighten up on the details of the ship to bring them into focal points. I noticed in his bfg paintings he made everything a real mess and then brought the imperial ships prow into focus by making it very detailed and red and it created something to grab your eye right off the bat and then made a sense of movement from there. So any who my ships are only about half done but here’s what I have done so far.
These are after Ivory spray, devlun mud wash, skull white drybrushing, and a very watered down gryphon sepia splotched around randomly.
Here I took an old tooth brush and splattered a burnt umber followed by white. (normal acrylic craft paints)
I grinded off the detail on the two wing things because it was one of the only places I could find to put a mural.... (like you didn't see that coming)
Here I just added foundation red paints and thats where I had to stop.
I have 3 squads of 4 gladius frigutes with 3 different heraldry markings on the wings and a strike cruiser to go along with each.
Anywho I hope to get my fleet done to match my army by the end of the week.

Back from tournament. It was a well ran tournament and was the most laid back tournament I've ever been too. At lunch we all went out to a Mexican restaurant and ate and I had a full pitcher of beer and was feeling pretty good about rounds 2 and 3 at this point... win or loose! I ended up snagging Players choice award. With a Massacre and 2 draws.
Here is some in game action shots.
After that flamer hit and a pistol volley/charge I killed all the space wolves... Probably would have went down different with the new codex!
Here is my land raider going off road...
Dreadnaughts climbing over the wreck that is my LR.
One of my favorite moments from the tourney was when Vulkan, Master of the Forge, and 5x th/ ss Termies murdered his whole side of the board and his LR full of the furious space wolves ran away from my unit... There was much fun to be had at my opponents expense.
There use to be a DP standing right in front of me...
Here is a shot of some of the better painted armies in attendance.
Wildeyedjester's cannibal legion IG
Monkey's Space Wolves
Safty Lock's Arkansas Razorbacks (american) football themed bikes
Big A's Nids
Fletch's Alpha Legion
BFG should be finished later this week.

In good renaissance fashion, a picture of the Emperor as a youthful Apollo style figure (perhaps even in a in a chariot) might be appropriate- or perhaps as a Zeus hurling a lighting bolt.
Otherwise perhaps an armored, winged angel with sword outstretched could be neat.
Chapter heraldry wouldn't be out of place, either- or perhaps a depiction of the animal symbol of either the chapter, or the chapters homeworld...

I used Testors model master paint 'Ivory' was in the name. I don't recall the exact words. I wouldn't recomend it though, I had a lot of problems with it and had to use tamiyas clear over it before it was fit to paint on. I have piddled around with the idea of using the Vitruvian Man but I couldn't find the right place for it. I'll photoshop it on my battle barge and if I like it I'll use it. Great Idea btw SonofGulliman.

This is absolutely beautiful work, but, I do feel the need to point out that in BFG, the bases are very important to the game. So, while pretty, your bases aren't really usable.

How is it coming on the BFG murals? I have recently been on a BFG kick myself so I am interested to see your take.
13017
Post by: littleboyblues
I think its kind of funny how this thread just got necroed... Because I primed a FW dreadnought drop pod 10 min ago that I'm painting to match my marines. My BFG ships have been neglected for too long I must admit. I'm trying to get my 2010 tournament army all painted up right now. I've bought a forge world Grey knight strike cruiser. I plan on removing all the GK heraldry and painting it up with more reds than my other strike cruisers and It will be my strike cruiser for my veteran company. I haven't even started on the battle barge strike cruiser. So foxphoenix135 post or link your ships I would like to see them. Dakka doesn't have enough cool bfg stuff on it.
Even though it was necroed I'll be adding to this soon. ;P

I made the front page of Port Maw, the BFG forum (one of the largest still left) for my tyranid ship scratchbuild.

I have ordered some grey knight strike cruisers myself (cheaper than regular strike cruisers! What???) so I'll post some pictures of them once I receive them... All I have right now are some IN ships.
I'm glad to see you'll be resuming this soon! Not enough of us BFG players stick around these days.

My death company dread I've started built out of a Ven Dred and is going to have 2 forge world gray knight arms to represent his claws.
Here is a primered Dread Drop Pod.
