2,000 confirmed cases in Mexico. 169 deaths. Thats 9% mortality rate. Thats higher than the Spanish flu outbreak.
But you're right, photo ops with Air Force One buzzing NYC are much more important.

Because the mexican healthcare system is so god damn amazing. The avian flu had a fairly high mortality rate until it hit areas with access to hospitals too.
Neither one is important. People should shut up about it and report the multiple genocides, wars, conflicts, and maybe at some point just maybe report on one of the half dozen collapsing governments on this planet.

From the episode when Lisa decided to be a vegetarian,
Homer Simpson, "So, you won't eat sausage?"
Lisa, "No."
H, "What about bacon?"
L, "No."
H, "What about ham?"
L, "No, dad."
H, "What about porkchops?"
L, "Dad, those all come from the same animal."
H, "Sure, Lisa, there's some magical animal they all come from."
Anyway, this is why I don't want the US government to be 'responsible' for the healthcare system.
Maybe Obama ran out of people that don't cheat on their taxes to nominate to posts.

169 dead? Okay, that is nothing. I'm sure that sucked for the families that happened to, but really, come on. More people have died from a single plane crash. Hell, a really bad Memorial Day weekend, and you'll have well over half of that many dead from drinking accidents. Damn media blowing crap out of proportion to get people to watch them out of fear. Fear is the great motivator. They'll use it to sell anything. STOP BUYING THE BS!!! Trust me, if it gets bad enough, we'll all know. Just look at AIDS. Now there is a serious problem. Last time around the image in the TV 24h a day was of guys in HazMat suits throwing sacks of dead (or in some cases still alive) birds in hastly dug mass graves around the world. This time we´ll have guys wearing masks, dead pigs might be to gross for the daily News.
But I swear that the big labs are sponsoring this mess, in Japan the health minister already told everyone that millions of Tamiflu doses will be available. IIRC at 100$ a pop somebody is very happy.

On a more serious note...
Here in Sunny Queensland the health beuracrats are going bananas blasting my general practice and the hospital I'm working in with updates and protocols every couple of hours.
To a town of 1800 with the nearest airport 80km away and the state capital (where the international flights land) 500 or so km away).
There was a huge beat up in the state newspaper today about Swine Flu being detected, acctual reading of the story revealed a couple of paragraphs in that the 5 people had tested positive to the influenza A virus.... sigh.
We had no Bird Flu, and no SARS here in Australia and they must have spent tens of millions in that beat up.
It would be nice it the media would stop the beat up. They are just craving a pandemic as every time it looks like one is to kick off they go bananas, but it invariably ends up less than the regular influenza virus...

"...and now I cast upon you...every disease that starts with S!"
"Oh no...not swine flu! NOOOO!"
"So, you're not worried about Superridiculousheadexplosionitis?"
"I've got that disease everyone is scared of! I might die, or worse, be a social pariah!!"
"Nutter."
I'm sorry, I'm kind of numb to diseases in general right now, as I had a friend contract a kind of cancer that roughly 50 or so people in the States come down with each year, and was given three months to live. Her tumor has since gone down 90% and is in full remission over the course of those three months, and her doctors are calling it nothing short of a miracle. Merely having her nearby gives my friends and I at least a 3+ invulnerable save versus illness.
And if this swine flu mutates into a rampant disease that turns people into swine (or, at least, with four stubby hooves and curly tail and all that rot as I know a good many people in my town that could optimistically be described as swine) then I might worry a tad. 'Til then...Media Earplugs. Take two and call me when it all blows over.

Being stuck way down in the corner of the map, you're just lucky the rest of the world even remembers you exist. You're like a 27 hour plane ride from anything. It's not like there's any reason to visit, other than to see weird wildlife. And we have zoos for that.

True dat. But I can't help wondering if these increasingly frequent cycles are a coverup for something bigger.
Umm, this is mad cow, that's why the brains were bad. Yes, it spreads by eating brains. No, they weren't eating brains, the ummmm, cows were. Crud, I mean they were fed brains. Yeah, that's it.
Oh, that,? Just, ummm bird flu. that's it. Nothing suspicious about that. We just had to cut off the heads for testing. Rumors of quarantined villages being eradicated are blatant lies.
Mexico? Yeah, swine flu. No, I'm sure. Of course the victims didn't bite anyone. It's just the flu. Burning the bodies if perfectly normal. And people often moan and wander around when sick.

Flu can be a killer, the last real outbreak was in 1918 and it killed about as many people as WW1, so there is room for concern.
However times have changed, world health is more prepared even in the developing world. This is Swine Flu, not Italian Flu (cookie to the first to recognise the source).

There's no need to insult my country for me pointing out an historical fact. And our population, by the way, is 21 million plus. Even in the present day, you can't deny Australia's importance; we're the closest 'western' neighbour to Asia.
On-topic: This probably isn't anything serious. We have had loads of 'ultimate killer diseases' like SARS and Avian flu, and I doubt that this is any different. If you look at the number of deaths in pandemics since 1918, they have decreased greatly thanks to a modernised health system.

The threat comes from where it's developing. In Mexico City, in one day alone, Hospitals dealt with 7,000 people with Flu like symptoms. Now granted, not all will have the disease, but given Mexicos poor health service, the virus has a lot of potential hosts to mature and adapt in. Given that number, it's entirely possible it will develop into a drug resistant strain in a relatively short time, then my friends, we are boned. The drugs being administered right now are apparently only effective in the early stages, which is not a good thing. So no panic right now, sure. But give it a few months.....

What gives you trouble? Is it the transposition of letters, word recognition, inference,
word sequence?
Maybe a short guide will help you with the self-editing process:
- Type your message.
- Look for spellchecks (I think you already do this).
- Capitalize any first letter after a period.
- Capitalize any proper noun.
- Beyond the above two capitalization rules, I doubt anyone will notice. But following those two rules will help.
- Read over your post.
- When you have to choose between a long and a short sentence, choose the short one (helps you avoid odd constructions and comma stuff)
- Remember to punctuate and capitalize after breaking up long sentences.
- Break up large paragraphs into smaller ones (no textwalls!)
If you're still having trouble editing for clarity, then post less (not less often, I mean
post less information) until you feel more ambitious and ready to tackle longer posts.

I´m going to add another one but with a twist. Japan, the war could have stagnated in Europe without Japan opening a new front that, once the 41-mid 42 naval campaign was stopped, allowed FDR to fully jump in with the might of the US economy behind. You can add that although the japanese soldier was the equivalent of the allied one (training, valor, etc) the higher echelons of the IJA and the IJN where filled with hubris and a lack of a clear strategy. Sometimes, towards the end of the war, I just think the Tokyo HQ was fighting the war more like a school fight than the fight for their lives that it was.

In London we have several posh burger shop chains such as Hamburger Union and Ultimate Burger.
I went there for lunch yesterday.
The thing is, £13.20 plus tip is really rather a lot to pay for an OK but not especially good burger, some fries, a salad and a small bottle of diet Coke.
I have come to the conclusion that McD's is better value for money. If I go for a proper sit-down meal, I will splash out a bit more and have something more adventurous than just a burger.

When America entered the war, we adopted a "Europe First" policy. It wasn't till after V-E Day that America truly focused on the pacific theater. Britain was holding its own and if America didn't go to Europe, chances are Britain would still be around. It would be difficult for a transatlantic invasion by the Nazis(Nat Zees) unless they had a place to launch from in the western hemisphere. Thats why the D-Day invasion was launched from Britain. If america focused on Japan, then they would've been beaten and Russia could focus on fighting Germany. The war would get into a constant stalemate between Russia and the Axis allies with some assistance from Britain and some materials from America.
Why did america beat Japan? Tactical genius, training the chinese to fly planes(Flying Tigers), better made planes, and the fact that the BEST japanese pilots were crashing their planes into ships. In terms of Japanese soldiers vs American soldiers, most americans had the thinking of "Don't die for your country, make the other SOB die for his."

You need to get some facts straight. the "Europe First" policy wasn´t a lack of effort on the Pacific front, Japan was already defeated by V-E day, the problem was that the japanese leadership refused to realise it.
Without the US, Britain would have been defeated by starvation of it´s military machine, the US Navy and Air force contributed to close the Atlantic Gap where the U-boats were having a field day and the additional units released for convoy duty lifted a heavy weight from the Royal Navy. That´s the same strategy that the US Navy used to starve Japan later on.
The chinese air force and the chinese war effort, sorry to be so harsh, were a complete joke. As late as winter 44 when the other theater armies were fighting for their lives the IJA advanced more than 500 km in China to consolidate the front and gain needed rice supplies. The Flying Tigers were effective as a morale unit "taking the fight to those jap bastards" than in interdicting the IJAAF (although until the end of the war the press continued using the name to designate all the air units fighting in China). China was a mess and remained a black hole for supplies until Japan collapsed.
Last, the Kamikaze. Kamikaze were a last ditch effort that started in fall 44 under the auspices of Vice-Admiral Takijiro Onishi , before it was the "samurai" spirit that made pilots to disregard their safety in their attacks after Leyte suicide became policy and until Midway, the japanese were the ones flying with the best planes and the best crews. But the point you are trying to make is better reflected in the cavalier attitude the IJN to to rescue operations. Midway was a disaster not for the flat tops sunk but for the ditching crews the IJN left to die, we are talking about elite crews dying because nobody gave a damn, mean while the US Navy deployed the most efficient plan to rescue air crews, using subs and seaplanes, during one attack on the Ryukyu Islands 21 planes were shot down, only 11 crew members died, all the rest were rescued in less than 24h by seaplanes or submarines. The japanese never bothered going after their crews.
To end my probably uncalled for lecture, tactically the US were not better than Japan, but the US had a clear strategy while Japan was an exercice in hubris. Like going to the local Rogue Trader tournament to spend the weekend. That´s cool to do with miniatures but it´s a horrible way to wage war.
M.
PS: Nemesis. The battle for Japan 1944-45 by Max Hastings is a good book to check some of the things I´m talking about.
