Which I found out yesterday is no match for Ghazkhull Thraka..

Nice painting though. It seems in some places the hardlining is a bit brutal, like on Telion's glove, but most of it is really nice work, especially Telion's face.

Edit: Edited from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

The only issue I have with the models is the lines you can see on the dread. Other than that these are by far the best painted models I have commented on.

I'm tired of seeing crappy models on here and seeing comments like "man that is so cool" when they suck.

Nice job and keep up the great work!

Bases are incredable!

As much as I hear griping about everyone playing ultrapuppies, this is probably the first thread I've seen for them. You do a wonderful job, and I'd love to play against any force painted as well as this one. Though I must agree with Gordino, the highlighting is very blunt in places.

MauleedlovesYakeface wrote:The only issue I have with the models is the lines you can see on the dread.

Not so sure what you mean exactly by the lines on the dread, but it was a 'recycled' dread from my brother, Didn't really know how to strip plastic models so I didn't bother =)

As for the Highlighting on these bad boys it's all very experimental. Haven't really ever painted an army in this way and they are fairly rushed, buuut practice makes perfect.

I'm also gonna do a tutorial for bases, I've seen far too many crappy bases, and in my opinion it's what makes a miniature look fantastic!

The power weapons excite me in ways I haven't felt in years.

I'm enjoying the bold highlights, because I think they're only an issue when you grab the mini and stick it close enough to lick.

Though, from a distance, they do make the mini look more tasteable.

Looking forwards to more.

You ought to be painting the in-store demo models at a GW store, yours are far better.

You seem to have a really good aptitude for bold highlighting. Do you have any advice on how you painted this scheme (especially the standard)? Is your basecoat Necron Abyss, by the way, or is it something lighter like Regal Blue?

Kudos for taking the posterboy army and trying something different with the stock scheme.

Personally, the super-bold highlights make me think of Tron more than the Ultramarines (especially those termies). I'd want to see them in person, on a table, and at a reasonable distance before I judge them for being too harshly highlighted, though. Photos can do funky things beyond simple magnification.

The power weapons, while kind of cool in their different way, don't quite sit right with me, either. It's a cool effect, but I feel like the black space left over is too visible to make it look like a blade made only of crackling energy, but not visible enough to really define the shape of the blade if it's meant to be seen. It could simply be a result of the photography, in which case ignore those comments. If the blade treatment is an experiment, I'd say the first sword and axe are promising. Not so much on the second sword.

Just my personal feelings, I'm no expert, blah blah blah, standard polite disclaimers. You went for a distinctive look, which you certainly achieved. Quite cleanly, to boot. Not my cup of tea, but I'm more than willing to acknowledge the technical skill behind it. Cheers

Post by: Sicarious85

lol I get what you mean by the tron remark, they don't look like they do in the photos, my camera really makes the highlighting look too striking for some reason, from arms length it doesnt look so blunt.

as for the paint scheme it goes as follows for the entire army:

1. Chaos Black Base
2. Mordian Blue complete cover coat
3. Bedab Black wash
4. Ultramarine Blue 1st stage highlight
5. roughly 60/30 Ultramarine Blue to Space Wolves Grey 2nd stage highlight

I like what you did with the power weapons, especially the power axe. The predator is what really shines though, the free hand work you did on it on the top on both sides of the turret really makes it something special.

I did notice your black reach figure Sergeant is a bit cross eyed. Might want to get those pupils pointing in the same direction! One recommendation for the assault cannon on that dreadnaught, drill it! Grab a small hobby drill and drill those barrels out, it will really really improve the model. I always recommend drilling all barrels on everyone, but the large ones like the dreadnaughts really need it. At an absolute minimum, add some black dots to simulate the barrel holes, right now it looks incomplete.

I figured there was some camera-related wonkiness involved. There always seems to be something that refuses to let anyone else see what they actually look like (trying to take progress pics of my first painting experiments is hellish). Or, you know, you're a professional photographer. Or a very experienced hobbyist. Any way...

The group shot on the shelf looks a lot better, to my eye, probably due to the distance and lighting. I'm guessing that's more what they look like on a table, which is pretty darn nice. That standard has me excited, too. I really like the design and want to see it on a banner.

Of course there are a few lil steps in between that I do also, such as apply a second coat of bedab here and there for extra depth and neaten up highlights (when i can be bothered) most of it is just all to preference as i go along.

You can blame all the distractions ive had lately, like my Imperial Guard army that im currently working on to support the ultramarines in apoc games, magnetizing my shadow sword, working on an ork mek boy army, commission painting a deathwing and chaos daemons army plus my bretonnian army which ive just started.. to name but a few..

I haven't finished all that much in the way of the UM lately except for some more scouts and these Sternguard.

So, I dragged the Marines out the other day and gave the Orks a battle.

We played 2500pts Calgars Ultramarines against Ghazkhulls unstoppable WAAAGH!

This was the first stages of Turn 1

Another angle

2 of my drop pods came down directly where i wanted them, 1 carrying 10 man tac squad and the other an ironclad dread. The Ironclad straight up knocked out one of the trukks with a single krak missile.

This is turn 2 or 3.. can't remember really.. i think turn 2 was a fairly boring turn of moving up and jus a bit of shooting.. My Vanguard got in though in this turn with a chaplain accompanying them, they charged a 10 strong Nob squad and wiped it out.

another angle of turn 3

Turn 4
The kans and battlewagon moved in for the kill against calgar redeember and honour guard. Later Ghazkull was dropped out of the battle wagon and miserably died against calgars unstoppable wrath. Funniest part of the match tho was when one of the kans fired its grotzooka scattered back to the centre of the mob and killed 2 of its own!

And in the end my marines, suffering losses of 1 unit of vanguard veterans and 1 chaplain, proclaimed victory over the battlefield.

Wow, just one question. When you say paint them in the same style as your Rhino wreck, do you mean long dead? Just curious....(and if your smart a-- alert is going off it's okay.)

Your stuff looks really nice. About how much time would you say it takes you per model? Obviously each model is different and the bigger the model the more work it needs.

I have to say that despite the comments made about the highlighting I actually really like the style you've used. I bet they look really great in person at a tabletop distance. I'm also really a fan of the darker shade of blue that you have going. It really makes the Ultramarines look a little more menacing instead of the Emperor's lapdogs. Good work.

Had some time to take a few photos and post some photos of my recent projects, seeing as though I seem to keep being dragged away from my Ultramarines I thought I'd start posting up photos of all my other work I've been doing in between.

My brother and I were so Impressed by the ruined rhino in the terrain piece that we decided it would be a good idea for him to collect an Imperial Fist army using the same paint scheme.

Here's a few shots of my up and coming Imperial Guard army, I've used them a few times with stand in model and so far i'm really impressed with the way they play.
Just painted at a quick table top standard (mainly washes and simple highlights)

Your highlights aren't the absolute finest, tiniest lines in the world, and frankly I love that. Your highlights have volume and depth that puts most of those needlepoint-fine highlights to shame. Your work is phenomenal, and really evokes some older 'Eavy Metal, while still having its own uniqueness. I can't wait to see how that Stompa turns out.

This is a great thread. Your ultramarines look great, and feel slightly nostalgic too.

The paint-job on the Imperial Fist Vindicator is top notch. Great stuff.

The imperial guard commander with the red coat is great. The color choices are outstanding.

Fantastic work!

I think the Grey highlights should be a little finer. Other than that they look great. The tank (and valk) look especially nice!

I have been lucky enough to play with and against Sicarious85 and can honestly say that his models are BRILLIANT at playing distances.

Because I have played at many tournaments, I have seen a LOT of really good painting "in the flesh". Some models that look incredible when held up in the hand, end up losing something visually when at gaming distance.

Having said all that, they do look really very good "in the hand".

Would I be able to ask the colour scheme you used to get the yellow? I love the vindicator. Want mine to look that gnarley =D

so, it start off with:

skull white spray
sunburst yellow
wash of gryphonne sepia
dry brush of bleached bone
speckling of scorched brown, bestial brown and chaos black
successive washes of gyphonne sepia and devlan mud around the bottom of the mini
applied washes into the creases and joins starting with gryphonne sepia, ogryn flesh and devlan mud waiting till each layer is dry
finally a light drybrush of bleached bone to bring the highlights back out again.

Hope that helps =)

I like everything bar Calgar. He's not doing it for me. I think it's the armour tone and the gold. It's just not quite fitting. You'd need either a brighter gold or a darker blue (armour) for it to look right...
