Post by: Nexus 6

My Imperial guard needs a new shiny super heavy tank... therefore I'm going to build them a Marcharius! And since my ork-playing friend is getting a bit cocky so I'm going to arm it whit a vulcan mega bolter...

I'm using the templates from dwc-archive as a starting point. the material is mostly going to be plastic card.

this is what I've got so far:

sides taking shape

side sponson from a leman russ and lots and lots of rivets...

making rivets is boring... but the hole punch makes it tolerable

the hull is also taking shape

update coming soon

Great start!

Quick question - does that hole punch have a small enough setting to get a size close to what is on the 'official' GW Baneblade model?

the smallest setting is 2 mm... so I have bought some plasticard rods in smaller diameter as a supplement

the hull is coming together... used some humbrol model filler to fill up the gaps and cracks. Now its time to let it dry... then its sanding time

I just bought some bondo the other day, anybody ever use that? Tips?

I'm not familiar with humbrol model filler, pretty good?

Post by: sonofruss

For bondo you will need body trowels they are made of rubber and the bondo won't stick to it after it dries.
You want to start small if you are using it for modeling read the package for mixing instructions.

Time for a update!

The turret is starting to take shape

the ammo compartment that is going to be attached to the back of the turret

Putting some of the pieces together...

It actually starts looking a bit like at Marcharius

Lots more to do... sanding, riveting, details...

I'm going to use two chimera treads glued together. like this...

I have borrowed the idea from fex22763 over on Work In Progress

This is what I did yesterday (while activity not watching the Eurovision song contest...)

put the turret together and started on some detailing. Lots more to do, but at least it looks a bit like the real deal

You could probably buy enough plasticard to make 50+ of those for the cost of my Machariuses.

Does look good though. The high turret is interesting. Much higher than the actual kit.

thanks! I think I have spent about the equivalent of 35 USD on plasticard on this build (and a lot of bits and pieces from my bitbox)

what are the dimensions of the original? Mine is 13 centimetres wide and about 20 centimetres long. the turret is roughly 2 centimetres high and 6 centimetres wide (we use the metric system in Sweden so I don't do inch and foots and stuff... ) It would be interesting to see how close to the original I have come

Whoops didn't even notice that you didnt use the two track idea!

Doh!

Fantastic finished product, my only crit would be the tracks... Personally I feel they are the only weak link at the moment in an amazing project. I would have gone with some 1/35 scale tracks.

You can get plenty of component sets that are just packs of treads, metal, resin, or plastic that would fit really well.

I'm taking a brake from the macharius project... I just got my imperial guard order from my online flgs and the plan is to put all the new stuff together and give it a coat of colour before I start doing some serious painting

Here is the first stuff I put together and sprayed a coat of paint on so far...

I always wanted rough riders in my army... but did not like the thought of having horse cavalry in my (more or less...) mechanised army. So I ordered some space marine scout bikes and used some guard torsos from my bitbox... and this is the result so far (and yeah I noticed the mould lines... camera puts on 5 pounds...)

I was thinking about what should represent the hunting lances... and so far I have come up with the following: some kind of explosive device that is thrown against the enemy in the first round of cc... or maybe driving a bike with 1 meter wide tires straight in to an enemy unit is enough to represent the S5 power weapon attack.
Any thoughts?

here is the last two bikes...

some close combat...

and a flamer... not sure about the placement of the flamer, but it will have to do...

after reading the codex I noticed that storm troopers cant use vox casters any more and since I equipped my storm trooper squads with voxes...
like this little fellow (I use these guys as count as storm troopers...)

I decided to cut them of in order to get my army up to codex standard....

then I noticed that my command squad veterans or veteran sergeants can't use plasma- or boltpistols any more and that my missile launchers can't be on separate bases... lot of fine tuning to do!

yeah I hope so! It was kind of a to get smooth and nice

here is a WIP on my version of Colonel Iron hand Starken...

It's parts from the cadian and the catachan command spruces and a shot gun from the space marine scout bike

I used the bionic arm from the cadian command sprue... but I had to "reverse" it to get it to fit whit the scout shotgun arm. There is a bit of fine-tuning left to do...

1:35 scale Churchill tracks. The Design of the British Churchill Heavy Tank is actually quite similar to the Macharius.

You know if you felt so inclined you could always just remove what you currently have and upgrade. Might take a little work but the end result would make a great Tank outstanding.

You know actually I'm not sure, however if they were too wide you could always shave them down or sand them down a little. I expect the scale and sizing would be roughly on par with a 1:35 Churchill.

I think it looks good as a plasma cannon, the problem is it looks like you just stuck the thing on the end of a Russ turret. If you check out the Forgeworld Executioners the plasma cannon has details like control wiring and piping and stuff that runs back into the turret. I guess its a problem if you want to have a magnetised turret, but in order to reduce the "just stuck there" look you need to tie the cannon into the turret more.

Maybe you could look at magnetising the whole weapon/mantlet section, rather than just the weapon? (thats what I'm planning for my Predator turretted russes, I just need an appropriate weapon).

I may have said the same thing several times, but whatever

I reckon the main problem with the Executioner turret is that the Cannon is so much bigger than the mantlet. I suspect if you rebuild the mantlet so it surrounds the gun you might get a better look. The Gatling Cannon is pure win however

The scratch-build was great! However, on the painting, if you own an airbrush, even though I really don't know how to use them, maybe adding more shades of green possibly using washes or glazes to add depth to the plating? Maybe even just high-lighting would work but right now, it looks flat and kind of boring which an awesome tank like that shouldn't!

Macharius looks great! Can I pilfer a copy of the schematics?

great job with the macharius; no suggestions there. as for your marbo, i'd add a more obvious knife to complete the model. you might have the standard catachan knife on the backpack but i think marbo deserves a bigger nastier one since it wounds wraithlords on a 2+!!

All of your conversions of the special characters look great. Just one question; what is that bit that you used for marbo's revolver?

Nice conversions! I used exactly the same gun for my Marbo, I think it looks the part as a ripper pistol.

what is that bit that you used for marbo's revolver?

A stub gun from necromunda as far as I can tell. Either from the weapons sprues you could get at the time or from the plastic Orlock gang that came with the original necromunda box.

Wow, great stuff! Once again my work is made to look like shenanigans. Your work looks so clean and exact, especially on the track assembly side of your Macharius. Again wonderful!

I have to say, when I first looked at this thread, I only saw the last picture of the semi-painted tank. And I couldn't tell it was a scratch build!

Well done.

WOW, that tank is sweet. i swear it is the real thing (apart from the tracks)
i like the punisher, but the plasma cannon dosn't look right.
this may be a little late but for hunting lances i used a mortar as the hunting lance i shaved down the details expect for the imperial eagle and glued it onto the bike where your light is on your models.
also this is too late as well but for sargent harker you could use a scout HB. i have seen it done before on daka, it looked good but cant remeber who did it right now
