Well, more of a hiatus than an end. That said, how many gamers can actully say that they've painted all their models?
cygnnus wrote:Love the Marauder! Like you, that was always one of my favorite of the original unseen. That said, I have always been most partial to the rifleman, even though it kind of sucked in the rules. Those AC fives just didn’t do it. Great work, as always!
Valete,

The Marauder was, indeed, one of the best Unseen. The Warhammer and Rifleman are a close second and third. And while AC5s didn't pack a lot of punch, they only generate one heat, which at least keeps the ROF up.

It's my favorite from this set. I wish Catalyst sold individual mechs so I could get at least one more.

As I said above, I'm stopping because I don't have any more mechs to paint. I'll bring the CAV models home sooner or later, and then it's back to stompy goodness!
Slinky wrote:Very nice work! Does BT tend to be played with any terrain, or just on the flat hex maps?
We used to play on a regular board with 3D terrain. The most important thing is mounting your models on hex bases because you have to pay for turns, but other than that it worked pretty well.
I finally finished the chupacabras:
The theme for the February paining challenge was Location, Location, Location. I tried to capture the feel of the American Southwest in their bases, but it didn't feel like enough, so I took the plunge and made a display base for them. The grass is static grass and tufts, and the cacti are (somewhat amateurishly) hand-scultped. The rabbit came with some Bad Squiddo minis that I have lying around waiting to be painted. As predicted, their tails are prone to snapping off, but I think they'll hold as long as I don't touch the models.
The painting challenge for March will most likely be Space Marines. While I have a bunch of SM models (as would any gamer as old as I am), I don't really enjoy painting marines per se. I'm considering using the models to explore Grimdark painting techinques-- extreme contrasts, weathering, and such.

The theme of the Dakka Painting Challenge this month (actually, every March) is Space Marines. Although I don't play 40K any more, and don't intend to, I have a pile of unpainted Marines, as does any hobbyist of a certain age. I wasn't really interested in painting something "new," but I remembered having these dudes:
I got them back when GW mail order would custom cast anything, as long as you had the catalog number. All told, I have about a dozen of models from this set, and for the challenge I have decided to paint one of each, and enter the ones I'm happiest with.
Rather than painting them in chapter colors, I have decided to give them all unique paint schemes, inspired by some of the color plates from the Rogue Trader rulebook. This first model is based on the fellow on the left:
I went with a high-contrast, muddy palette, based on my limited knowledge of the Grimdark style. Not bad for a first try, I think, but I see lots of room for improvement. The glowy eyes are kind of wonky, and I see that missed the little dags on his helmet, so I'll have to go back and add those.
I'm still trying to figure out how to paint Grimdark, so if anyone has feedback or advice, it would be most appreciated.

Great stuff. Always loved that illustration. Interesting fact: when it was used in WD it was captioned 'marines' but in the RT rulebook - the example here, they are 'human renegades'. Just dudes in power armour. The graffiti on the wall behind them.

Although the production methods were relatively primitive compared to today, models from this era certainly have a lot of "character," which keeps them fun to paint.

I think I'll just try to keep with the super-high contrast, and not worry so much about the grime that seems to be the hallmark of the style.

One of the best things about RT was just how sandboxy it was. Of course, we all ended up building armies of identically-painted models, but at first it was a free-for-all. Games like Rogue Stars get close, but don't quite capture the feel of the era.
Here's the next renegade:
Once again, my camera refuses to focus properly. I'm not as happy with the NMM on the weapon on this guy, but I think the highlights on his helmet work better than the previous model. I'm also rather proud of the stripes on the shoulder pad-- they look to be almost the same size! I'm not sure what to do with the insignia badge on the right shoulder, so I'm leaving that blank for now.
Next up, more marines! I'll also try to get some better photos for next time, as well.

Every year, either during winter or spring vacation, I clear out some stuff from the Closet of Infinite Possibility. Usually, I get rid of things that I know I'll never get around to using (like a massive backlog of unpainted 40K Orks), and for the most part it feels good. Some things I regret, even a decade later. My Skullz AdMech and Chaos Dwarf Renegades sets still haunt my dreams...

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. These guys are definitely of the of their time, and I'm enjoying them a lot for their funk-value.
I finished this guy over the weekend:
As always, the Dakka SuperZoom makes the model look much worse than in real life. I went with a police car-inspired lack-and-white scheme for this one, with a red-and-yellow check pattern on his shoulder pad to add some color.
Two more left to paint. After that, I'll finish off their bases and decide which ones to enter in the Painting Comp.
55682
Post by: JoshInJapan
I finished the last two RT Space Marines:
I wanted each model to have a unique color scheme, which is how I ended up with teal and violet. The violet guy is the LE2 Space Marine, the first ever released, and is the best model of this entire set. I wish the rest had been sculpted with the same proportions. Here is the entire set together:
I have to spruce up their bases a bit, and then decide which to enter in the Painting Comp.
Between these two models, I dug into the backlog and pulled out this model:
She is from Bad Squiddo's Amazons range. It was refreshing to go back to organic shapes after all those power armored dudes. I'm getting better at bronze NMM, but I'm not quite "there" yet.

The original Space Marine (the purple one in this set) is a pretty solid sculpt that holds up pretty well even today. The rest seem to have been cranked out in a hurry. I can"t imagine doing a whole army of them, but as individual mercs they work just fine

Well, when Harlequins were first introduced, they were said to salvage vehicles and equipment, repainting them in Harlie colors and patterns-- somewhere, I still have a Rhino that I decked out in all sorts of colors and patterns. It may well be that there are Eldar hiding in these suits of power armor!
Continuing with my Amazon theme, we have Lehana, Amazon Champion:
Thea, another Amazon Champion:
An an unnamed Amazon Elite Guard:
And a group photo, including the one I shared last update:
These models represent a sort of back to basic project, in that I used my world-famous Paint Everything Brown ( TM) method. As always, they look better in hand than in Dakka SuperZoom.
I still have several more models from this set waiting for paint, but they may be temporarily sidelined during the Painting Challenge for April. The theme is Doomsday, and I have a few options. I may put up a poll to help me decide which to choose.

I've been a WW fan since I was a kid (Lynda Carter FTW!), and I loved Patty Jenkins' take on the Amazons-- Zac Snyder, not so much. I like that these models are identifiably female without being cheesecake.
Here's a sort of filler model that I cranked out in a couple of sittings:
This is the Sergeant from the first Space Marine Heroes set. He's been sitting, primed, in a drawer for a long, long time. I was going to paint him for the Dakka Challenge, but went with the RT dudes instead. I tried to do him in Grimdark style, and I'm pretty happy with how the turned out. He needs his chapter emblem, but otherwise he's finished.
Here's a shot with three generations of Marines, for scale:
The theme for April's Challenge is Doomsday. I haven't decided what I want to paint yet-- I have three different options that I'm considering. I think I'll put up a poll and see what the audience wants to see.

Thanks! The whole set is great-- they almost make me want to play 40K again. Thankfully, Xenos Rampant is a viable option.
So, I dug into the Closet of Shame, and was once again surprised at how many unpainted models I have. I reckon it's about time to cull again.
Here are my three choices for the April Challenge:
1) Dr Johan and his Doomray, from RAFM's Airship Pirates line:
2) William McLeod, Journalist and Jeff Reagher, Insane, both from RAFM's Call of Cthulhu line. (I'll probably only paint one of the Jack Nicholson dude)
3) Stalkers from Orzol miniatures (a KS I backed a couple of years ago). I have at least this many more models that were a little more difficult to get to
Which do you think I should enter in the April Challenge? Vote in the poll (it will be up for five days), and I'll do whichever wins the vote. Actually, I'll probably do all of them, but I'll enter your favorites.

So has everyone but graven! The cannon is metal, and will require pinning to keep it together, but I already have some ideas about how to approach the painting.
Annie wrote:Lovely Amazons! Really nice Cool models too...
I think I have a few more models from this company in my Gallery...
I bought some 40K models for the first time in years:
They're being sold as monthly collectibles in bookstores. The first has a SM lieutenant and Necron Royal Warden, along with a tiny battle mat, and some dice. 2 and 3 have some basic troops and one pot of paint. The first two sets were ¥599 and ¥1,299, which are cheap enough for impulse buys, but every set after is full price (¥2,199), which would add up quick if I decided to go all in. Which I likely won't, as I don't really plan on getting back into 40K, but these will make a nice diversion if/when I get around to painting them.

I haven't gone to the bookstore in a couple of weeks, but they had at least two of each issue (no. 9 at the time) the last time I went. I'm not sure that there are that many nerds where I live. That said, regular price is pretty expensive for the number of models in each one...

Dr. Johan is ready to take over the world:
The painted photos on the RAFM website have him in a while lab coat, but take a look at that Ming the Merciless collar, the natty walking stick, and the fabulous rings! This guy is ready to take over the world, and do in in style, with his black overcoat and pinstriped suit. The model looks a whole lot like Rob Halford, which is why his Van Dyke is brown rather than black or grey.
His integral base is detailed, but I wasn't really sure how to approach it. I went with a sort of marble effect, and would appreciate it if you don't look too closely.
I spend several painting sessions doing and redoing the NMM bronze until I could get it where I wanted it. I'm still not completely happy with the result, but that's probably a function of holding it six inches from my face trying to get the highlights right. Green is, of course, the color of mad science, and I was originally planning to have the glowy parts on the interior of the chassis, but I was never happy with the results. Instead, I put the energy tubes around the outside, and added some half-baked OSL around the joins. The barrel of the gun and the disk it attaches to are separate from the main body, and are weirdly asymmetrical. Maybe the original green got twisted when making the master? Or possibly it was sculpted that way? Either way, this is what I came up with, and you can't really tell at arm's length, which is the real test.
Here are a couple of photos of the Dr. and his Doomray, ready to take over the world!

I think both pieces came out very well!
Dr Johan's marble base works well with the somber color scheme of the character and the Death Ray is absolutely perfect! Really like the effort (and the result you obtained) getting the power glow and NMM just right.

Having finished Dr. Johan, I have moved on to the runner-up in the poll:
I got these guys in a Kickstarter a couple of years ago, along with several more of these military-looking dudes, and and equal number of civilian stalkers/bandits. I got them for Zona Alfa, but they'll work in any near-future, post- apoc setting. I used this set to practice painting camo. The guy in the middle was painted last, and I think he turned out the best. The models themselves are resin. The detailing is super-sharp, and mold lines nearly non-existent, but the weapons are all super-thin and will 100% break off in storage.

Camkierhi wrote:Brilliant camo I'd say. Excellent as always.
Thanks. I'm not wholly convinced that camo works at this scale, as it doesn't really show up at tabletop distances, but it was good practice.
I finished the last of the stalkers that came in the set:
These two are a lot skinnier than the first three, and have a lot more wrinkles in their clothes, which made them more difficult to paint. My technique for their clothes has been AP Army Green, then some splotches for the camo, followed by AP soft tone and then highlights. For the guy on the left in this photo, I used Strong Tone instead, and it pretty much drowned out the camo. Live and learn, I guess.
These two are have sniper rifles rather than AK's. The prone model is female, wearing what seem to be form-fitting yoga pants rather than the baggy trousers of the other models in this set. Seriously, her butt is fully on display, which is why I decided to hide her in the bushes-- it just seems inappropriate for the setting. In retrospect, I should have put her on a cavalry-sized base as she hangs of this 32mm round in front and back. Also, I probably should have just replaced the gun barrel with wire, as the resin is not likely to survive any handling.
Here is the whole set together:
I have finished two of the bandits that came with this KS, but have decided to shift over to these Chaos Dwarves for the May Challenge:

I fell your pain, Josh. I hate extremely fragile resin for figures. It's just asking for it so it can ruing all your hard work!
I had a Warzone figure snap not that long ago because it got snagged while pulling a box out of storage.

That's one of the advantages of metal, especially monopose. I just packed this set up this morning, we'll see how long they survive.

I never had a swivel gun, but I do have a bazooka team, and both of the boar-centaur war machines.

Thanks! I'm not a video gamer, but I have read and enjoyed both Roadside Picnic and Metro 2033.
Painting has slowed down a bit, but I have finished these two bandits:
Given the Russian setting of Zona Alfa, it seemed appropriate to put these guys in track suits. The long, black Matrix coats just add to the ridiculousness of the models. I'm delighted by these guys, and I look forward to working on the rest. Before that, though, I need to get my Painting Challenge entry finished. Here are the first three potential entries:
The theme is "Mistakes Were Made," and these guys fit the theme in a variety of ways. I have written previously about my regret over selling their predecessors. These models are pretty old, so there are some slight miscasts here and there. Ad of course, I'm still struggling with NMM, so all I can see are the mistakes. Still and all, these guys are done.

Great work, Josh(e)! As always, your naturalistic pallet really works well with those guys. Love the combination of the fantastic aspects of chaos dwarves mixed with the very realistic paint scheme.
And in particular, those original non-big hat model really work with that scheme.
And as always, I am sure you are much harder on yourself than anyone else would be with those paint jobs. I suspect the vast, vast majority of Wargamer’s would be absolutely thrilled to be able to paint that quality, and especially at the sustained volume you’ve been able to manage.

It's mostly the cloak. It looks like a blanket draped over the model, and it covers pretty much everything except the face and hands. There's another version of this sculpt with a coll, Chaosy helmet that I like much more.

You flatter me, as always. I'm old enough, and play rarely enough, that I have enough time to be a sort-of-perfectionist.

I have a random selection of models to share this week. First, another Space Marine Hero:
I don't play 40K anymore, and likely never will, so I'm using these models mostly to practice lighting. The yellow on this guy is richer than on the previous one. I'm not sure about the OSL in the eyes, but the NMM on the bolter clip on his base turned out great.
Two more track-suited Stalkers. I didn't quite achieve Bruce Lee-yellow on the guy with the shogun, but I'm happy with the Adidas stripes on his pants.
And finally, a Chaos Thug for this month's Challenge. I love these early versions of Chaos dudes-- they feel more like the weird wasteland raiders from the Road Warrior than the later plastics. I'm not sure I nailed the NMM on his shoulder pad, but I'm happy with the greave and the giant hexwrench club.

Thanks. I'm finding that this particular set of models is particularly vulnerable to lighting, as it were:
In real life, the armor looks more like armor than it does in these photos. The shield gave me a lot of grief. Why does he even have a shield? He has no sidearm, so he won't be able to use the shield and the giant mace at the same time. I tried a few Chaos-y effects before I settled on this Viking design, which both fits with the image of Chaos warriors as raiders from the frozen north and resembles some sort of hazard marker.
I'm quite proud of the NMM on this guy's helmet, but it really only works from one angle. His robes were supposed to be purple, but my mix ended up looking more grey.

Thanks! I'm trying to branch out from my Paint Everything Brown technique. I still can't seem to make myself do really bright colors, but these pastels worked out pretty well, I think.
As the summer gets hotter, I find myself slowing down. Here are a couple of almost-finished Oldhammer skeletons for the July Painting Challenge:
For the weapons, I'm trying to make them look rusty, but with the corrosion worn off on the cutting edges, implying recent use. It works better on the sworn than on the scythe. The shield need some wear and tear, as well.

I did the same, but in reverse. I got into WHFB with the plastic Skeleton Horde box, then switched over to Chaos because of the lower model count. This was in 2E, when a single Chaos Lord who got lucky with mutations could steamroller over entire blocks of infantry.

Here are my final photos of the skeletons. First, Longhorn:
Most of these models are from a time when everyone got a name, rather than a descriptor (leader, champion, etc.). I didn't do any more work on this guy except finishing his base. His pose is kind of weird--it will be hard to wield that scythe with his arms behind his horns like that.
Next, Hellblade:
In addition to finishing the base, I added some battle damage to the shield. Also, take a look at his elbows. Did you notice that he has patellae there? I think Aly Morrison repurposed the legs from a different skeleton model to make this dude.
Next up, Screamer:
NMM chainmail continues to be difficult. Also, I had to Liefeld his right foot to hide a miscast.
Lastly, an armored skeleton:
Not much to say about this guy. His armor looks better in these photos than in person.
Finally, a group shot:
I'm running low on inspiration at the moment, so I don't have anything on the painting desk. I'll probably paint up some classic Fire Dragons for the August Challenge, but I haven't been gaming for the last few months, and so I'm at a loss for what to work on. I'll have to dig in to the many Boxes of Opportunity and see what grabs my fancy.

Thanks for the comments, fellows. Painting has been slow this month, as we're in the middle of a heatwave. Japanese summer isn't all that hot, especially compared to the American SW (where I come from originally), but with humidity in the 80-90% range, 35C is pretty brutal, and mostly I just want to sit in a cool room and not do anything. That said, I have made a little progress.
First, this Stalker that I actually finished in late June, but just got around to photographing today:
He's from the same set as the track-suit guys I posted a while back, but he struck me as being more of a jeans-and-leather jacket type.
Next, three wizard shades for Frostgrave:
Northstar released these with The Maze of Malcor, and they've been sitting, primed and ready for painting, since last October. There are two more in this set, but I don't know where they are, and in fact I may not even have them.
Finally, a WIP shot of my entry for this month's Painting Challenge:
The theme is Some Like It Hot. These are going to be Burning Men, a foe that appears in [i]The Red King, another Frostgrave supplement. The skulls come from GSW, while the rest are Frostgrave Barbarians. The skulls alone were too incongruous, so I decided to try sculpting some flames here and there to tie the parts together. They turned out alright, but the proof will be in the painting, as it were.

makeitorky wrote:They look amazing! I love the color choices for the woman with a flute.
Thanks! I can't really take credit for any color choices, as all three paint jobs were based on the art from the Frostgrave supplement in which they appear.
This month's Dakka Challenge is Some Like It Hot, and I'll be entering some Burning Men made from Frostgrave Barbarians, for use in the Red King supplement. I started with barbarian bodies, adding flaming skulls from Secret Weapon and some hand sculpted flames:
I then painted up all the non-flaming parts using my trademarked Paint Everything Brown technique:
I had some time today, so I did up this guy to practice painting fire:
The fire is quite vivid, if not entirely realistic. The OSL works in some places but not in others. As is often the case, he looks better in hand than on the screen. I'll do them one at a time and see if I can't get better at this.

Continuing with the burning theme, I painted up this Balrog Dragon from Ral Partha:
I've had this model for decades-- he used to see a lot of action as a Greater Daemon for my WHFB Chaos army. Alas, years of storage took a terrible toll on his condition, and I ended up stripping and reassembling the model with the intent of entering it in the Painting Comp. I opted for the Burning Men instead, but since he was sitting on my painting station all ready to go, I decided to just get him done.
I based his colors on Smaug, from the Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit. The runes on his sword are tiny and don't really look like runes, so I gave up trying to paint them that way and just made the sword look super-heated/molten. The yellow could stand to be brighter, but I'm getting tired of going back over it, so I'm calling it done.
The theme for the September painting challenge is "Suns Out, Guns Out." I'll be painting these ogres I got in a KS four or five years ago, and entering the best five:

The hammer reads are super-heated much better than any of the other weapons, I think.

After many, many productive months of hobbying, I find that I have pretty much everything I will ever need to play any game that I'm likely to play. As a result, my pace has slowed, and everything I paint is for the monthly Dakka Challenge. This month's theme is "Sun's Out, Guns Out." These ogres, which I got in a KS several years ago, fit the description well:
These guys are a little different from the other ogres in my collection. My Oldhammer ogres, for example, wear pants. My Mantic ogres have a very exaggerated inverted pyramid shape, like classic bodybuilders. These guys are built more like sumo wrestlers-- broad shoulders and thick arms, but with a gut as well. They are all pretty samey, so the painting has been going pretty quickly. Pic Dump, ahoy!
All of these guys are Festooned With Skulls. They also have fur-lined wristbands and legwarmers. I figured these guys would be barbaric and primitive, so I went with a variety of browns and tans and avoided any bright colors. I struggled with the armor plates-- I gave the earliest ones have bone armor, but transitioned over to bronze NMM for the later ones, with mixed results. They are resin models, so I expect a lot of their weapons to snap off sooner or later.
Since these models are all essentially identical, they paint up pretty fast-- I'm doing them one at a time, over about four painting sessions. Since taking these photos, I have finished one more, and have prepped the final ogre and the dog, but ran out of superglue before I could assemble them. I am on track to have the whole warband finished by the end of the month. Then I have to decide which 1-2 models to enter in the comp.
Next month's comp is Halloween themed, and I plan to paint my Frostgrave Candlejacks. They are nifty models, and will be a good chance to keep practicing fire/lighting effects.

Thanks! I'm pleased with how the ogres turned out, but I'm just as pleased to be finished with them. They're all wearing essentially the same gear, so it was like painting the same model twelve times in a row!
inmygravenimage wrote:Very glowy and lovely. Some green, perhaps, on the base?
That's what I'm thinking. I'll see if I can't make something that looks like pumpkin vines, with some little gourds mixed in-- kind of lean into the whole Great Pumpkin Patch vibe.

I'm glad you like them, speaking of which...
The Candlejacks are finished:
The lighting effects inside their heads only work when viewed from certain angles, but that's to be expected, I guess. I thought their bases were a little plain, so I sculpted some pumpkins and vines. The vines ended up looking like tentacles, though, so I acquired some foliage to make them look more like, er, vines.
Next up, I have two more Frostgrave constructs-- a Blade Dog and a construct hound. They should be finished pretty quickly.

Thanks, all. The Candlejacks were a fun project.
Next up, some more Frostgrave constructs:
The blade dog is made of animated knives, the construct hound looks like an origami fox. These were both quick, simple paint jobs.
I also did this Bone Warlock from Knucklebones.
This particular maker came up in a DCM painting thread. I ended up getting enough for a good sized warband for The Doomed. The website says it's resin, but it feels like restic. 3D printed maybe?
Here are all three together:
Next up: more dudes from Knuclebones.

Yeah, a lot of this maker's product are very "Inspired By~." The trooper models I picked up, and will be sharing as I work through them, are quite chonky, and give off a 200AD/Heavy Metal vibe.
I can't take any credit for the sculpts, but I agree that they are pretty out there. The artwork in the FG supplement for the paper construct have it covered with runes, but I didn't think I could pull that off.

My son and I gave it a try a couple of weekends ago. The inspiration is very much there, at least for me, but the rules are a little too sparse for a teenager. A much more crowded, almost maze-like, board seems to be pretty important. I do like the double-trouble of Conflict and Horror, though. Lot's of great monsters to build!

Citadel minotaurs of a certain vintage are among my favorite Warhammer models. I always tried to field them in my Chaos armies, even if Ogres were better.
Here are some WIP photos:
This guy is mostly done, but I need to step away for a bit. Looking at these photos, I can see that his horns are too dark, and I need to lighten his hair some. The studded arm bands reminded me of Rob Halford, so I made him blonde, but all the various browns are kind of running together.
I've only done the skin and fur on this guy so far. I may go with black leather for all his belts.

After the minotaurs, I returned to a project that I had put aside because I had trouble deciding how to approach the models:
This guy is a Beul (which is apparently a Dutch word for a torturer or executioner) from Knucklebones, the same sculptor as the gas mask dudes I posted last month. It took me a long time to figure out how to paint this guy-- his cloak was pretty simple, but it took a while for me to figure out what was going on with his pants. I'm not even sure what they are called, but they look a lot like WHFB Empire clothing, so I leaned into that. His hat and collar were originally solid red, but I went back and did this two-tone thing after I finished this next guy:
This guy went a little faster. I thought the blue was a little too boring, so I did him in two colors instead of one. I liked the effect enough to go back the the guy above.
I did this guy in one sitting yesterday. Not much to add, but these guys are pretty quick to paint up now that I know what I want to do with them. Here are all three together:
I have a couple more of these Beuls, along with some more gas mask troopers. The Dakka Challenge for December is the Open Round, so I'll need to dig into the backlog and find something cool to paint. I only have three weeks in December because I'll be visiting the US for the first time in years, so I'll have a little time pressure to spur me on.

I got them from Only Games, which seems to be a sort of intermediary printing service- 3D sculptors put their stuff up for sale, customers buy them, and the printer gives some of the proceeds to the sculptor.

I don't have much to add regarding how I approached these models. Lot's of browns, mostly. Here are all the Beuls together:
And all of the gas mask dudes:
And, finally, one big group shot:
The Dakka Challenge for December is an open month, meaning we can enter whatever we are working on. I'm kind of between projects, and as I'll be visiting the US over the holidays, I don't have a lot of time to think about something special. To that end, I'll be working (or will have worked on, as the case may be) these models:
1) the last three Knucklbones dudes
2) Freya on Hildisvini, from Bad Squiddo. I swear I took a proper Before photo, but it doesn't seem to have saved.
3) The miniatures contents of Demonship from Black Site Studios
I'll decided right before I leave for the US which models I actually enter, based on how satisfied I am with them.

Happy New Year, everyone! After a trip back to the US (my first visit ineight years!), I'm home, a couple pounds heavier, and ready to hobby once again.
Back in October or November, I ordered a copy of Demonship from Black Site Studios. I actually painted these models in December, but I'm counting them towards my January total because I didn't get around to photographing them until now:
You can order a prepainted MDF terrain set, but the postage would have been outrageous. They also offer a set of STL files, but I don't have a 3D printer. I ended up knocking together this game board from some foam sheets I had lying around, along with some Dreadball and Sedition Wars terrain:
The board is modular, and changes as you move from room to room. I finally finished all the painting and assembly last night, and so I plan to try the game some time today.
The theme from this month's painting challenge is From The Shadows. I opted to paint up these Blackwater Gulch models from Gangfight games:
The Thin Man
This guy was quite challenging to paint, as he really is thin, like toothpick thin, making it challenging to pick out details.
Black Eyed Children:
For whatever reason, my phone's camera refused to focus on the faces. I'll have to try to get better shots for my final Challenge Entry.
Here they are all together:
I'm looking forward to another year of productive hobbying, and I hope all of you are, as well.

My painting has slowed down a lot recently. I'm running out of storage for finished models, and my son is sort of aging out of playing with his father. Slow doesn't mean stopping, though.
These four are official miniatures for County Road Z, a solo/co- op zombie survival game I picked up a while back. The models are from Black Site, the same outfit that made the Demonship models I showed last month. All of them are named, but I don't remember what those names are...
These next four are from Midlam Miniatures. I go them in a KS two or three years ago. They are supposed to be assassins, but I didn't want to paint a bunch of black-and-grey dudes, so I did them up as rangers instead. There are the models in the set, and they are all pretty much identical apart from their poses. I'll keep working on the set between other projects.
The theme for this month's painting challenge is Out With The Old, In With The New. This fits in with my goal for this year of getting through as much of my backlog as possible, while keeping purchases at a minimum. To this end, I'll start by working on some Usagi Yojimbo miniatures sent to me by a good friend more than twenty years ago, when I first same to Japan. I'll start with Miyamoto Usagi and is frienemy Gennosuke:

Thanks. The bearded dude was the second one I painted from this set, when motivation was still high. I modeled his cap after the ubiquitous Arizona Feeds cap that so many people in my hometown wore. The archer was the last, and I was kind of checked out when I got to her.
youwashock wrote:*slow claps in old metal*

There's no metal like old metal. These models have been taunting me for years. I was a huge fan back in the day, but these models are out of scale with everything else-- much bigger than 28mm, much smaller than whatever scale Inquisitor was. I'll be painting these up for display, I think.
Demonship is fun, but frustrating. Did you ever play Chainsaw Warrior? It's kind of like that, as it's really, really difficult to beat the game. Although I've come close, I have yet to actually win.

inmygravenimage wrote:Both looking lovely. Fur and cloth excellent.
Thanks! Working on only one model at a time makes it a little easier to focus.
KidCthulhu wrote:Color me impressed, Josh? What scale are Usagi and company?
They're larger than 28mm, but not quite Inquisitor scale (54mm?) I'm not sure whether they were made for gaming of any sort.
Here are the next two in the set. First up, Jei:
Jei is a recurring villain in the series, a sort of demon-possessed warrior monk. Once again, the proportions are all over the place in this set-- Jei looks like a guy wearing a furry mask, rather than an anthropomorphic wolf.
This is Katsuichi:
Katsuichi is Usagi's fencing teacher/mentor. Katsuichi is also the name of a tonkastu restaurant. He's an anthropomorphic lion, and in the comics he is massive, especially compared to Usagi. The model looks like a guy in lion makeup. It's far too late, of course, but I wish the sculptors had consulted each other and achieved consistent proportions.
Here, for KidCthulhu, is a scale shot with one of the assassin/rangers I posted a while back:

It helps that the models are so simple-- essentially 3D versions of B&W illustrations-- so there isn't a lot of detail to pick out.
Llamahead wrote:Wonderful stuff Midlam miniatures is one of my favourite ranges so always good to see them about.
I have backed a number of their KS projects, and I like their chunky, hand-sculpted aesthetic a lot.
I've started on the last two UY minis: Kitsune and the Frightened Villager:
But first, I took a little break and painted up some Bad Squiddo Amazons:
I started this project a couple of years ago (you can see them in this gallery, but as with so many things I start, I got bored and moved on to other things. My theme for this year is Getting Things Finished, so expect to see a lot of stuff that has been sitting around for a long time finally see the light of day.

Thanks. I still struggle with NMM, but I do see some improvement. These models were a sort of exercise in economy, in that a) I've not been using whatever paint is left over on my wet palette, rather than adding to it and b) I'm spending less time blending and relying on the small scale and distance from the eye to (hopefully) get an impressionist effect.

Thanks! In real life and up close, they are pretty rough, but I think they pass the arm's length test pretty well. The warmth comes from my trademark Paint Everything Brown technique.
Flapjack wrote:amazons look great, I haven't seen these models before. Nice work on the armor.
Thanks! The minis are from Bad Squiddo. They make a lot of nifty models that fill quite a few niches.
Over the last week, I finished off that last of the Usagi Yojimbo models. First, Kitsune:
She is a recurring character in the series, a sort of street performer/pickpocket/rogue. It took me three tries to get the maple leaves on her kimono as good as they are, which is not very good, really. Once again, we can see the wildly varying proportions in these models. Her head is about the size of a real fox's, on a petite human body. I had a heck of a time getting the parasol to stick, and even then it's at a weird angle.
Next, we have a Scared Peasant:
Not a character per se, but someone we would see in the background, fleeing from bandits or monsters or whatever. The model is almost 2.5D, like you'd see in a cheaper sort of Green Army Man. I painted him in roughly the same colors as Usagi, as indigo was a ubiquitous color for poor people's clothing in pre-modern Japan.
Here are both models together:
And here is the whole set, with the uneven proportions on full display:
Next up, the last two Amazon models. After that, I have to find something Space Mariney for the March challenge.

The colors for these models were pretty simple-- UY was (is?) a B&W comic, so I didn't have to worry about any kind of patterns, for the most part.

The Dakka Challenge this month is Space Marines. I don't play 40K anymore, and likely never will again, so I don't have much reason to paint stock SM models. I have decided to revisit a project from 20+ years ago:
I painted an army of these Samurai Space Marines for the WH40K Grand Tournaments 2002 and 2003-- there are 30-40 more in various stages of disrepair sitting in their Chessex case. They are just stock marines with additional bits scultped from kneadatite along with some plastruct siding (HO scale, I think). They are pretty rough, and I'm pretty sure I can do better this time around. I'm not sure how many I'll get to before the deadline, but I'm aiming for five.

Post by: JoshInJapan
I've been working on a prototype Samurai Marine, mostly just to see if my ideas will work. I started with the kabuto. First, I added the hachi, or cabasset, as it is sometimes translated:
Then, the shikoro, the armored skirt which protects the neck:
This takes a long time, as each "layer" has to harden before I can add the next. There may be a faster way, but I have four helmets done at this point, so that experiment is pushed back for now. Next, the maedate and fukigaeshi:
The maedate is purely decorative, and not all helmets had them. The fukigaeshion early kabuto were much, much larger, but by the Warring States period, which I'm using as the basis for this project, they had shrunk down to the size you see here.
I apparently didn't take any photos of the chest pieces. I pulled out the rotary tool and grounded off the eagles and skulls and whatnot. Two of them I left smooth, and on two others I sculpted on some decorative lacing. After gluing the torso to the legs, I added the kusazuri, or armored skirt:
In previous interations, I just glued the plastic directly to the model, but this time I added some lacing to show how the kusazuri are suspended trom the do, as well as add some movement by changing the angle at which they hang.
After taking these photos, I did some work on the arms, and added a scabbard and obi (belt). I hope I can have those parts ready to share tonight. This first guy is taking a long time, but the next few should go faster now that I have a sense of what I need to do.

When I was in the planning stage for this project, I was considering using some push-fit Primaris that I had laying around. Since the auto-reactive shoulder pads are molded on to the arms, I did a little googling for replacement parts, and found these guys. They have some nice stuff, but since I'm on a self-imposed hobby spending moratorium (already broken, sadly), I opted to sculpt by myself.

I'm familiar with the terms for the components for European and Middle Eastern armor- right down to the fiddly bits that no one ever uses. I'm happy to learn a lot about the same for Japanese armor- your knowledge of the subject is impressive.
I wish you great luck in completing them!

Thanks kindly, everyone. I'm very much a beginner at sculpting-- every detail you see on these models was scraped off and reapplied at least twice, often many more times.
I finished the last two Amazons, which means that I can call this project finished:
And the first two Samurai Marines are ready for paint:
I have to figure out how to photograph these guys so everything is in focus...

Well, spring break is just around the corner. I'll have to see if I can't dig the rest of the set out.
Thanks. The mage/healer/whatever she is was really easy to paint--she's about 90% cloak, after all.
I started putting paint on the Marines:
I'm leaning into the shiny rather than the traditional edge highlights. It works in some spots, not so well in others. In previous iterations of the Samurai Marines, I hand painted the lacing on the kusazuri and sode, but it didn't look right to my much older eyes. I went back and sculpted the lacing where appropriate, and it looks better. Obviously, it would have been much easier and much neater to add it to the plasticard before assembly, and I'll likely do that with the next batch.

These are really excellent! I think the arm positioning on the second Samurine is good- very "ready guard" position.
Will leaders/sergeants/specialty figures get the back banner ( kohn?) or not a good look with what is already a fantastic idea brought to execution?
Rock on!

I won't be freehanding them. Many years ago, I picked up what would turn out to be a lifetime supply of waterslide transfer paper. I have enough crane transfers for at least a hundred models.

Next, backpacks and basing.

And here are the Samurai Marines, all finished:
I tried to base these guys on historical armors, but of course no one in 15th century Japan wore power armor, so there will be some differences. The sculpted lacing was time-consuming and required several scrapings and resculpts to get as good as it is. I think I have the process down, just in time to be finished with this project. For the helmet flash, I used a few different sources. From top to bottom: actual "hemlet flash" bits from Dixon, a blob of leftover putty that I flattened out and stuck on, the top half of an old Epic-scale Eldar Exarch, and some horns from a sprue of Chaos hounds. I mentioned in a previous comment that I would be adding sashimono, but now I'm not so sure, as they would make the models much harder to store.
Here are the photos I'll be sharing in the Dakka Challenge thread:

It's been a lot of trial and error. I still see mostly flaws, but they work well enough at arm's length.
After I finished this lot, I noticed that I had a lot of leftover parts still on my painting station:
So I built a sergeant:
Which takes me up to a demi-squad:
Remember earlier in the month, when I said that I had finished the Amazons? That may have been a lie. I found these two tucked away in my To Be Painted drawer:
This should be the last of them. Finally, I cranked out this Chaos Thug that had been sitting, primed but otherwise untouched, on the painting station for a while:

I'm glad you like him-- he went together pretty quickly now that I've figured out all the steps involved. I look forward to seeing more of the Samurai Skaven.
I've imposed a buying moratorium on myself for the year (I've already broken it, but only because the models were on backorder for a couple of months), and am trying to finish off projects and collections that have been sitting in the Closet of Shame for years and years. These next three models have been in a drawer under my painting station for a long time. First, a valkyrie from Bad Squiddo:
She came with the Shieldmaidens KS. I based her on Marvel's Valkyrie-- the comics version, not MCU.
Next, a couple of Oldhammer elves:
These old Jes Goodwin elves remain some of my favorite models. Their long, craggy faces are so easy to paint, and the leaf-shaped blades are just made for NMM.
Here's a group shot:
I have a few more miscellaneous models in the pipeline. The theme for the April Challenge is "Let's Finish This," and I have something kind of weird in mind. I'm looking forward to it.

You are too kind, sir. I am at least trying to keep my spending and acquiring to a minimum. I won't live forever, and I don't want to leave too huge a pile of unpainted models when I'm gone.
Llamahead wrote:Those Elves really look alien unlike many I've seen.
Oh, yeah, these early Jes Goodwin models really don't look human, do they.
Continuing the theme of Getting Stuff Finished, here are a couple of Japanese models, a maiko and geisha:
This first one is, I believe, a Zenit model. I actually watched a couple of makeup tutorials to figure out how to do the face. The eyes themselves are terribly sculpted, but the rest of the model was easy to work with.
This second one is a Lo5R/Clan War model. I had a little more trouble with this one, as she doesn't seem to be Japanese-- there are some weird detailing about the shoulders, and I couldn't identify the hairstyle. She seems to be "asian" rather than Japanese. She's also holding the shamisen backwards. I tried to paint her base like tatami mats, as she likely wouldn't be kneeling in the dirt to play.
Here they are together:
The theme for April's Challenge is "Let's Finish This." I have a couple of options. First, there's this Harlequin Dreadnought I started close to thirty years ago:
Second, the rest of my metal Fellowship of the Ring:
I'll work on both and enter whichever I am happier with.

Thanks. I wasn't sure that I could pull it off, but it worked pretty well. The other should probably have some sort of decoration as well, but I don't really like the model enough to pull her back out of storage.

They didn't. The face is the canopy from a harlequin jetbike, combined with a lot of sculpy.

I have, at this point, kind of a vague idea of how to approach the model. It might not get done this month, though...

Thanks! I enjoyed painting such colorful models, especially given that they aren't fighty, like pretty much everything else I do.

Were there rules for the harlie dread? We didn't have ready access to Citadel Journal back in the day. It just seemed like an obvious conversion. I'm glad you like the Samurines, as well.
ZergSmasher wrote:The Japanese models continue to look great, and that Harlequin dready should be cool once it's painted too.
Thanks! The maiko was fun to paint (the geisha not so much), so it's nice to hear that other people like them. The Harlie Dread is proving difficult to get started on, sadly...
Continuing my theme of getting stuff done, here are a couple of Dreadball captains:
The guy on the left is the captain of the Wu-Ling Wanders, who create portals on the pitch. The restic casting was pretty rough on this guy, which on top of all the fiddly detail made him not a lot of fun to paint. In the end, I went the expressionist route, with patches of color to sort of define what everything is and let the viewer fill in the details.
The guy on the right is the captain of the Glambek Ghosts, immaterial energy beings who can phase through enemy players. The rest of the team is cast in translucent blue plastic. I just gave them a coat of Tamiya Clear Blue. This guy is regular grey restic. I think the effect worked pretty well.
I also finished off my old metal Fellowship:
I tried to paint them all in movie-accurate colors. It was pretty easy to do, as there is a boatload of photo reference online, mostly by/for cosplayers.
Here are the rest of the Fellowship, painted years ago, and showing wear from their frequent participation in games of Frostgrave:
As you can see, my painting style has changed significantly over the last five? ten? years since I painted these first three. They work pretty well in group, though, so I don't think I'll be going back and touching up anything:
The harlequin dreadnought is proving quite the challenge. I'm making a fancy base for it, and have been playing around with poses, but the inherent stiffness of the base model is slowing me down. Also, while drilling out the shoulder mount, I managed to break off the tip of my drill bit, and have to rethink my strategy for mounting the limbs. I'll try to share some WIP photos this weekend.

Milliput. I hadn't considered that. My Tamiya putty is too soft to hold the arm in place. I'll have to swing by the hobby shop today. Thanks for the advice!

Funky, indeed. It's proving remarkably difficult to paint.
Is Halo a DZ reskin? I'm not a computer gamer, so I'm not familiar with the franchise, and thus haven't been following its development. That said, I went all the way in (potentially marriage-threateningly) on the first DZ kickstarter, and significantly on the second, so I have so much DZ stuff that I can't really see myself getting into another version of the same game. I do like the lore and models, even the funky old restics, so there's no harm to me there. The 3rd edition rules are pretty great, too.

Yeah, reskin with some mission elements that are more computer gamey. I mean it makes sense - DZ's cube measurement makes it much more accessible to non tabletop gamers. And the fact that you respawn is interesting. But GCPS are already Master chiefs so... meh.

Well, for better or worse, the Harlequin Dreadnought is finished:
I'm generally please with how the face turned out, somewhat less so with the body, and not particularly happy with the crest. It seems that sculpting this much hair is a lot more difficult than making a little patch to cover up a joint in a model. Still, I'm glad to be done. Now I have to decide if I want to enter this guy or the Fellowship in the Dakka Comp. What do you all think?
