Since I last checked in, I managed to finish the last of the Knucklebones minis:

I don't have much to add regarding how I approached these models. Lot's of browns, mostly. Here are all the Beuls together:

And all of the gas mask dudes:

And, finally, one big group shot:

The Dakka Challenge for December is an open month, meaning we can enter whatever we are working on. I'm kind of between projects, and as I'll be visiting the US over the holidays, I don't have a lot of time to think about something special. To that end, I'll be working (or will have worked on, as the case may be) these models:

1) the last three Knucklbones dudes

2) Freya on Hildisvini, from Bad Squiddo. I swear I took a proper Before photo, but it doesn't seem to have saved.

3) The miniatures contents of Demonship from Black Site Studios

I'll decided right before I leave for the US which models I actually enter, based on how satisfied I am with them.

It only looks that way because I am so lazy about taking photos. My YTD is still only double digits, and is unlikely to break 100.

Happy New Year, everyone! After a trip back to the US (my first visit ineight years!), I'm home, a couple pounds heavier, and ready to hobby once again.

Back in October or November, I ordered a copy of Demonship from Black Site Studios. I actually painted these models in December, but I'm counting them towards my January total because I didn't get around to photographing them until now:

You can order a prepainted MDF terrain set, but the postage would have been outrageous. They also offer a set of STL files, but I don't have a 3D printer. I ended up knocking together this game board from some foam sheets I had lying around, along with some Dreadball and Sedition Wars terrain:

The board is modular, and changes as you move from room to room. I finally finished all the painting and assembly last night, and so I plan to try the game some time today.

The theme from this month's painting challenge is From The Shadows. I opted to paint up these Blackwater Gulch models from Gangfight games:

The Thin Man

This guy was quite challenging to paint, as he really is thin, like toothpick thin, making it challenging to pick out details.

Black Eyed Children:

For whatever reason, my phone's camera refused to focus on the faces. I'll have to try to get better shots for my final Challenge Entry.

Here they are all together:

I'm looking forward to another year of productive hobbying, and I hope all of you are, as well.

Excellent stuff really intrigued by "Demonship" take it it's a Space Hulk knock off?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Kind of? It feels a little closer to Chainsaw Warrior with models. I have yet to actually play, but it's a solo game and thus more likely than anything else to see the tabletop right now.

Great work, Josh. Demonship sounded interesting when I first heard about it. I look forward to your thoughts.

Nice to see the Nlackwater Gulch models too. They produced a fun range of minis.

Thanks! I played four games of Demonship last night, between dinner and bedtime. Each game was pretty quick, as I died every time. It's trickier than it looks...

I have a lot of Blackwater Gulch minis, but have yet to give the game a go. Not much time to game these days, sadly...

I'm at least a dozen games in, but have yet to actually win. It may well be that running away is the only way to win.

My painting has slowed down a lot recently. I'm running out of storage for finished models, and my son is sort of aging out of playing with his father. Slow doesn't mean stopping, though.

These four are official miniatures for County Road Z, a solo/co-op zombie survival game I picked up a while back. The models are from Black Site, the same outfit that made the Demonship models I showed last month. All of them are named, but I don't remember what those names are...

These next four are from Midlam Miniatures. I go them in a KS two or three years ago. They are supposed to be assassins, but I didn't want to paint a bunch of black-and-grey dudes, so I did them up as rangers instead. There are the models in the set, and they are all pretty much identical apart from their poses. I'll keep working on the set between other projects.

The theme for this month's painting challenge is Out With The Old, In With The New. This fits in with my goal for this year of getting through as much of my backlog as possible, while keeping purchases at a minimum. To this end, I'll start by working on some Usagi Yojimbo miniatures sent to me by a good friend more than twenty years ago, when I first same to Japan. I'll start with Miyamoto Usagi and is frienemy Gennosuke:

Can't wait to see how Usagi and his friend turn out.

No familiarity with Demonship, at all, but those minis look pretty cool. Sort of Sedition Wars-like.

Thanks. The bearded dude was the second one I painted from this set, when motivation was still high. I modeled his cap after the ubiquitous Arizona Feeds cap that so many people in my hometown wore. The archer was the last, and I was kind of checked out when I got to her.

There's no metal like old metal. These models have been taunting me for years. I was a huge fan back in the day, but these models are out of scale with everything else-- much bigger than 28mm, much smaller than whatever scale Inquisitor was. I'll be painting these up for display, I think.

Demonship is fun, but frustrating. Did you ever play Chainsaw Warrior? It's kind of like that, as it's really, really difficult to beat the game. Although I've come close, I have yet to actually win.

I look forward to seeing how you approach the models. Speaking of which:

Miyamoto Usagi:

Murakami Gennosuke:

And both models together:

This is proving to be a kind of weird set of models. In the comics, Gen is a rhino, and towers over Usagi. In metal, they are the same size, with weird proportions, especially their heads. The white fur was kind of fun to paint-- I layered it up from Vallejo Shadow Grey (essentially Space Wolves Grey), and I think it turned out pretty well.

Next up, I have Jei and Katsuichi from the same set of models:

Thanks! Chainsaw Warrior was also really hard to beat, but sometime really easy. You fought your way through a card deck of enemies, so it was completely random. Lot of fun.

Vejut wrote:Yeah, that's going to be a hard act to follow, liking Gen's skin especially. Cool to see you have more of them too!

I kind of assumed that I had to whole set. I hope you get around to finishing all of yours.

inmygravenimage wrote:Both looking lovely. Fur and cloth excellent.

Thanks! Working on only one model at a time makes it a little easier to focus.

KidCthulhu wrote:Color me impressed, Josh? What scale are Usagi and company?

They're larger than 28mm, but not quite Inquisitor scale (54mm?) I'm not sure whether they were made for gaming of any sort.

Here are the next two in the set. First up, Jei:

Jei is a recurring villain in the series, a sort of demon-possessed warrior monk. Once again, the proportions are all over the place in this set-- Jei looks like a guy wearing a furry mask, rather than an anthropomorphic wolf.

This is Katsuichi:

Katsuichi is Usagi's fencing teacher/mentor. Katsuichi is also the name of a tonkastu restaurant. He's an anthropomorphic lion, and in the comics he is massive, especially compared to Usagi. The model looks like a guy in lion makeup. It's far too late, of course, but I wish the sculptors had consulted each other and achieved consistent proportions.

Here, for KidCthulhu, is a scale shot with one of the assassin/rangers I posted a while back:
