Out of the 900+ list items only about 1/3 of the items are changing. Most are not changing by more than a dollar or so, which is not as bad as past price changes. So yes, GW was correct in saying alignment.

14.00 for spraypaint is insane. You can goto lowes and buy black spraypaint that is better quality for 99c

Actually all of the paint brushes are down. They originally started at $8 now they start at $5.25.
The spray paints are down as well, originally they were $18 now they're $13.25.
For the most part these make no sense, it seems they've done away with the price banding, and gone back to differently priced battleforces.

And that 10-25% is about the difference in a lot of the US prices compared to the UK prices under current conversion rate. Looks like it'll still be cheaper to order from Maelstrom if they don't get boned in the new indy structure.

They raise prices every year, the % increase varies. The last time they increased prices was in September, using the climbing metal market as their reason. Metals then got slaughtered on the market, and yet here they are raising those prices again.

The Thunderfire Cannon will now cost close to $50?

$45 was already pretty close to $50 I believe. Now it basically is $50. Ouch.

Some of these price changes aren't too bad and some amaze me. The Chaos Dreadnought, which already barely sells due to the age of the sculpt and the rules for it in the current Codex is going up to $57.75. Figure Cases, which are already premium priced at $50 are going up $7.75 as well. Some of this is really scary and does not bode well for the hobby, the customers or probably GW in the long-run, especially given the current economy for most people. Raising starter sets from $60 to $75 is dicey, as it will be a lot harder for kids to talk parents who know nothing about this hobby into getting them a $75 set. Good deal or not, it is significantly higher. Since getting new customers to start the hobby in the first place is the big battle for GW, this change is the scariest of all for anyone who wants to see the hobby grow.

Overall, though, most increases are pretty small, so hopefully not too much of a deleterious effect on the hobby or my hobby.

Looking at the actual spreadsheet sent out to accounts, there are 250 price increases out of the 900+ codes. Of which 84 are under 10% (the vast majority of these being 3%). Of the 166 codes that were raised above 10%, 75 were raised 10% and 55 were under 16%. The only codes raise 25% are the starter sets, which besides Mines of Moria are still a great value at $75.

is this supposed to be good news? So 25% or so of the GW product line had a price increase, are we supposed to smile and say "well thats great could have been 50%". My issue are the items that had already been raised in September, some of them are now 50% more expensive then they were in September. also as other have mentioned some of the prices are unfortunate, and frankly perplexing. $75 is a mistake, simple as that...

Econ wise there is no excuse for these price increases. Cost of materials has plumeted and not just in the metal markets. 6 years ago when I first saw GW models I could not beleive how much this company wanted for an ugly tank when more realistic tanks were half that price. THen I realized this was a game kinda got into it and bit the bullet on the models. Since then the cost of these models has over doubled on most items. To play GW games you almost need to become elitist as the cost of the models has soared well beyond the means of their target market...especially in this economy. This is nothing short of short sited greed driving up prices. Fewer people are buying our stuff so lets jack up prices to maintain our income and decrease our supply=a failed company up for sale soon.

Actually, I've been noodling this, and it's entirely possible that GW HQ is hanging GW US out to dry.

That is, GW HQ (UK) knows that GW US is under forex pressure due to the low pound. GW UK knows from FW sales that US is taking advantage of the "discount". Especially when GW UK pulls the numbers on Maelstrom and similar discounters. And GW US knows that their sales are heavily depressed as a result. So, by raising US and UK, they stimulate short-term US and UK demand, knowing that it will be filled in the UK, driving UK profits.

I'd almost bet GW HQ is doing this to further put the screws to the US head of operations for some internal reason. I can't guess why, though...

Is there a Obama-like effort in the UK to extra-tax off-shore profits?

To answer your last question there... yes!

The economy in the UK is even worse off than ours here in the US (for right now). The current spending off the UK government far exceeds that of it's income and as a result the populous gets taxed heavily. The current prime minister of the UK, Gordon Brown is trying to spend their way out of recession, and borrow their way out of debt. This is obviously illogical, but sound familiar? Yes, Obama is trying to do the same thing and eventually all of these problems will be on our front door step ten fold. Anyway... as a result of Browns spending and taxing, it has squeezed the productive, private sector of the country to a point where businesses can not stay in business. With the country being in negative equity and not producing many traded goods it devalues the GBP (British Pound) and exacerbates the issue.

These price hikes as I see it are a result of all this. GW as a whole is being screwed and is only taking the necessary steps to stay in business. It's not 'greed', everyone, with even the tiniest business sense knows that you can't set your prices too high or you'll price yourself out of the market. If you know it, then I guarantee GW knows it. While I hate price hikes as much as the next person I think we all need to do a little less complaining and support GW as best we can. If we do not, then the price hikes will only get worse, product offering will become slim and GW will fade away.

Basically, $1 US is worth less to them now.. used to be 2:1 now its 1.5:1 (USD:GBP). However, what I see this doing, unless FLGS can price under MSRP, is hurt their local store sales, but increase the amount of people looking online and ordering from some of the places that offer the 25-30% discounts. It was already a better deal, since some offer free or low cost shipping, but now its even more appealing.

EDIT: Acutally, ignore that first sentence, I thought about it and we are getting screwed big time. That 1.5:1 conversion, vs. 2:1 conversion actually works in their favor, meaning it only takes 1.5 USD to earn them 1 GBP, where it used to take 2 USD to earn 1 GBP. So now that I think about it they are really pulling the wool over us.

My thinking could be off, since I didn't think too much about this.. but if true...

... insert Planet of the Apes end quote here ...

EDIT2: I also did some basic conversion math for some of the new overseas prices vs US prices, and if you can find vendors that cover the shipping you'll find that many of their retail prices are less then our retail prices after conversion. For example, the Ork Kommandos would cost you $30 USD buying for UK after price increase which is equal to the US price BEFORE the price increase.

You're thinking about it backwards actually.

Think about it like this... GW sets their pricing in GBP so lets take the AoBR box set that used to cost (30 GBP). At a 2:1 trade GW was getting (60 USD) for that box. Now that the exchange has dropped to 1.5:1 that (30 GBP) box will now only yield them (45 USD). To correct this drop in exchange rates GW raises the price to (50 GBP) which will now yield them (75 USD). So what we actually see is a (15 USD) price increase but they're seeing (20 GBP) increase which would actually be like if we had a (30 USD) price increase here. So it's not a matter of them screwing the US, the UK is actually getting shafted even more than us.

That was exactly my thought. Two years from now (if we're lucky) some one at GW will say: "Hmm landraider, $57.75, looks like that price is odd, better make it an even $65... wait with the price brackets we're bringing back it will have to be $70." I don't think I can really keep up with GW's prices. I budget ahead for my GW purchases and the money I had planned for the next year and a half are already getting folded into my current projects because of these price bumps.

Hmm, I'll have to think about it more.. but my initial thought is that the 45 USD is worth more than it used to be, after conversion, so they wouldn't be losing anything. Again, far outside my area of expertise, but usually a weakening of a currency benefits exports and hurts imports, and this is a situation where they are exporting goods. My argument is really weak at this point so its probably more a feeling than a fact.. but I am not yet convinced that the US market is not getting the short end of the stick

While the GBP has devalued, it is still worth more that the USD. Yes, at the current exchange rate the USD can buy more goods from the UK, but at the same time this mean that GW isn't taking in as much profit as it was when the exchange rate was 2:1. So they're increasing pricing to compensate for the simple fact that they're shipping out more stuff (as people take advantage of the lower exchange), but taking in less foreign money.

edit - I should mention that my ramblings are purely speculation. I don't actually know why GW raised their prices, but this seems the most logical reason.

ROFLMAO.

The Assault on Black Reach set will go from $60->$75 (25%). That's pricey for an introductory boxset, especially considering that it now costs more than a new console PS3/Xbox360 game. Exactly who is their target demographic again?

My favorite is that the Terminator Librarian will be basically $20 now. And to think we used to get a handful of those from the Deathwing Space Hulk expansion.

That 1.5:1 conversion, vs. 2:1 conversion actually works in their favor, meaning it only takes 1.5 USD to earn them 1 GBP, where it used to take 2 USD to earn 1 GBP. So now that I think about it they are really pulling the wool over us.

My thinking could be off, since I didn't think too much about this.

First, I think Oni must work for GW or own stock in the company. The comment that we should all " help GW out" is completely offensive to me.

Second, we are ALL getting screwed, US and UK alike. When the exchange rate was 2-1, 60 USD brought GW 30 GBP. The current exchange rate is 1.5648 USD = 1 GBP, which means that 60 USD now brings GW 38.75 GBP. In other words, they can charge fewer USD to make the same GBP.

Most economists agree that based on the numbers from production and transportation industries, the economy likely bottomed out in March and will begin improving throughout the rest of the year. The GBP - USD conversion rate follows this trend as well, bottoming out at 1.41 in March and increasing continuously up to today at 1.56. This means the the rate will likely end the year around the 3 year average of 1.85. That is bad news for the US. Please raise your hand if you remember a time when GW sold anything in the US at a lower percentage than the UK? In order to make the same percentage, we will likely see another price increase later in the year. Those of you laughing might not remember that they have done it before, so two GW price increases in a single fiscal year is not without precedent.

While the conversion rate does hurt GW when purchasing raw materials in dollars, the huge drop in the over all cost of those materials far out weighs the loss in buying power.

This is what it is, GW leadership and stockholders screaming "MORE MONEY" Any one that thinks GW is in business to make a good game at reasonable prices to make a fair profit is naive at best. Anyone that thinks we should take pity on poor GW and hand over our cash for outdated and underdesigned models at outrageous prices with big fat smiles on our faces, well ..... I can't say those words here.

Not sure how a 10% - %25 increase is minor......3-5% is minor. Im sorry for the new people who have to pay $75 for a starter box.

Actually they really aren't a great value. Especially if you consider the terrible quality of the models. I don't mind the dreadnought or the terminators, even though their options are so limited. But the marines in the set look absolutely horrible, especially next to real marine models.

Considering, these are starter sets the models look fine. A box of termies and a rule book is $25 more than the starter that comes with both and a whole lot more. Even if you bought it for the Termies the dreadnaught and the rule book you still made out. Even if the quality is not as good as the standard tactical squad I don't see how you can not think this is a good value.
Does a price increase suck? Yes. It does every year. I wish I could collect 40k for what it cost me when I started. I also wish I could buy gas for what I paid back then as well...

QFT!

It might be nice if the fat cats who've creamed the profits off the top of GW during the boom years turned around and helped those that gave them that money back then, now times are a little leaner!

As if that's ever going to happen!

GW's a business, so I don't expect them to be nice to me. GW's a business so they shouldn't expect me to be nice to them.

I earn my money by working hard (when I'm not plugged into Teh Internetz preaching hatred and vitriol!) So should they!

If they don't produce what the customer wants at a price the customer is prepared to pay, then that's tough luck on them.

That there are a few who are prepared to pay stupid prices for little moulded pieces of plastic and tin, and they will no longer be able to buy from them if/when GW folds ... well, too bad really. See it as your opportunity to find a brand new hobby. Like playing toy soldiers with little pieces of moulded plastic and tin made by someone else... You might find you have just as much fun, you never know!

I reserve my charity for worthy causes - like Oxfam or Cancer Research - a corporation run by fat cats who've earned £squillions over the last decade.... not so much!

I'll just be taking my time with my army. I know I'll never leave the GW hobby forever, but I do hate how the prices keep creeping up, and my purchases are completely dictated by my budget. I can see my way to a few of the new terrain kits, probably the new Planetstrike book.... SW in the fall. But models? I've got a lot to paint, so I don't think I'll be picking up any models anytime soon.

If people didn't see the yearly increase going forward as per usual that's their own naivete. I was honestly expecting them to pull the 2 GBP to 1 USD out again. It'll be interesting to see how quickly prices are increased again if the GBP climbs past their average.

On examining this price change list more closely I've noticed that most increases aren't that bad, but some items that are going up a lot also went up last October and have jumped quite a bit in that time frame. These are mostly metal model items. For example, Greater Daemons went from $45 US to $50 last October, now they are going up to $57.75 on June 1. That's a 28% increase in only about 7 months. Army Cases went from $90 to $95 then too, now they will be $99. Bloodcrushers Of Khorne went from $22 to $25, now they will be $29.75, a 35% increase since last October. Ouch!

"Most economists agree that based on the numbers from production and transportation industries, the economy likely bottomed out in March and will begin improving throughout the rest of the year. "

Standard and Poor downgraded the U.K. market today from stable to negative. I'm guessing that is going to hold the exchange rate to closer to 1.5 rather than pushing it towards 2.

No I don't respond well to threatened price increases / bubbles. I just move on. If you say "buy now the prices are going up!" I say, "mmm....sounds like an ebay sale opportunity..."
Except bullets of course, but even there I'm not going nuts. Having said that, Obama I need a Bullet Bubble Bailout! I promise to only spend on domestic bullets if necessary.

For national security purposes, that is.

I figure this is just encouragement to finish painting what I already own and not start picking up a new army.

I think that most people will continue to spend the same amount of money on hobby stuff, which means that GW's volume goes down. They may keep the same profit, or it could go up or down, but the volume will probably drop.

So, your response to a incoming price increase is to splurge and buy stuff en masse beforehand? You really taught them a lesson, didn't you! Sorta like blowing up your own building before the enemy gets there. Awesome.

Nope. It's like reinforcing your building and putting up sandbags, so that when the enemy's inevitable volley lands, it does less damage.

Lets face it, most people order online for the good discount, with a price hike more people will now do so.
GW need to start up another promotion like the sjullz years ago

You get a certain amount of "points" for each purchase, those points can then be used to buy limited edition models o maybe even partial discount from online ordering via GW's site.

I bought big, not knowing a price increase was coming, because I buy in bulk to get better savings.

With the price increase(s) coming, GW will be very unlikely to get similar monies from me in the foreseeable future. But, as I have what I want, that's not a big deal.

I will be buying one less, if not three less Baneblades from GW this year. Assuming these prices affect both the US and CAN markets.

I will however be painting the same amount of minis .

I am a little disapointed by the increase in the starter sets. I had GW's prices pegged at "just right" after the last decrease.

... to put it another way, the price was low enough the stuff was almost worth buying for its own sake. But with an increase I will be looking to say upgrade my car instead. Does not mean I will not be buying piles of the stuff anyway.

While I personally don't care about how much stuff costs (within reason) since I have a decent salary, there is no excuse for this kind of price gouging. Whoever is responsible, I hope for every extra dollar they make off this price hike, they develop one inoperable tumor.

New Prices @ 2009/05/26 00:00:46

Post by: Malladrius

That is a little bit extreme. However, I think GW just did the online stores that sell for less than retail a huge favor. Now more than ever people will look for alternative ways to get these models for less and that means that GW will be making less money by raising their prices... Doesn't this sound like a great business strategy to you?

New Prices @ 2009/05/26 06:01:29

Yes, they don't understand the basic concept of volume sales. This started back when Andy Chambers drafted a plan to target younger audiences because "veterans have all their stuff already anyway, so they're not buying anything... while kids have no real expenses and parents that want to shut them up". That may have been true back in the day where you had to convert half your stuff from almost scratch anyway, but now that they have such complete product lines, people would collect multiple armies.

Miniature gamers are compulsive collectors. When Warmachine was cheaper than GW games, I managed to acquire four armies. If they were still at roughly the same price point, I'd own all the factions now instead of only a quarter of them (and I had half at one point, but I got rid of them because I couldn't afford to continue fleshing out all of them, and needed the extra cash to flesh out the ones I liked best). So with increasing prices, instead of having me buy new items for multiple armies, and picking up new ones, they end up with me trading my existing models, which means they make 0 money.

And yes, tumors. They probably already have them, in any case; it would explain their astounding stupidity and lack of vision.

All this has really done to me is cut out bulk buying. I still will buy one off pieces I need but I recently was considering a Chaos Marine army and it was going to be about $350 after discount. Instead I traded some FoW stuff that I wasn't using for a huge marine army instead and all I need is basically three drop pods. So in effect this has cut them out of $250 in sales throughout the chain.
