I like the dread but I personally think the highlights on the test model look a tiny bit too extreme, maybe a light/medium grey would work better?

Have just started painting my scout squad, haved based them on larger 40mm bases in ruins. am hoping to pull off a realy gritty urban feel to these guys.
Apparently the hammers of dorn raid often into the eye of terror so im thinking they would fight in a lot of war torn and ravaged cities, also i think the black and gold contrats nicely with the bleak greys.
what do you guys think feed back please.

Before i started painting
had to do some shaving work on the missile scout to get him to fit onto the base he was already standing on his own rock

I like it, I think a wash over almost the whole of your test mini would really help tie it together.

here is my first scout cloak really just layering using codex and fortress grey and pointers would be welcome first minis ive ever done.

Great stuff. Throw a wash on and you're done! I wish my first models came out so well. The bases... eh I wouldn't have used that size but they look sick so who cares? Only real jerks at tourneys will be bent outta shape about them. I think they are spectacular.

Something is happening to your prime coat.

1. You are too close to the models.

2. You are putting too much paint on your models.

You should not have those pit or bumps on your models form spray painting them.

Yeah was thinking some camo would look nice but to be honest my painting skills are pretty gak and i would end up ruining the minis so i thought best to leave as is for now. yeah got some washes coming soon in the mail so hopefully when they arrive i can finish these off and my dreadnought

hehe , my painting skill arent that good either Follow this and you should get a good result :

1) Take a piece of paper and cut randomly into it (only once)

2) Take out the piece and then put it wher you whant your camo

3) Paint the area

Note : It may be a bit difficult with things such as capes that are so "fliksy" but practise makes perfect right ?

Heres the whole squad 80% finished still waiting on my stupid washes to arrive in the mail damn you SD. for my first minis im happy with them still really just trying to learn techniques. my hnads shake like all gak so cant really paint for any more than 2 hrs before i gotto take a break. i think i will start on one of my rhinos next. Im halfway through converting inquisitor corteaz he will serve as my chapter master just awaiting some bibs and bobs to arrive in the mail and he will be ready for his undercoat will post pics when his ready

It needs a darker gray to help it stand out from the background of the cloak.

That idea is okay. I use painter's tape or thumb tac, they both work on all surfaces!

the inquisitor looks like he's been soaked in glue, but otherwise he is awesome. The captain's wargear is cool but the pose is quite unnatural. I think they'll both look great when painted.

some stuff that cropped up.

1. you cant have a dreadnought with both a multi-melta and auto cannon.

2.with the devastator squads, I'd drop 1 or 2 heavy weapon and replace them with bolters. other wise you'll just get all your heavy weapons shot down in the first turn.

in the 5th ed rule book it says that you can swap the close combat weapon for either a twin las cannon or twin auto cannons. and i might just add 2 extra marines with bolters to my dev squads

Ok, well anyway you do it, the model is easily an excellent representation of a Chapter Master. The camo is actually well, done. It doesn't actually camouflage the model on the table while still retaining the thematic elements of a heavily concealed urban sniper team. If your opponents give you crap for basing them on big bases, I say find newer opponents.

WOW you've made ALOT of progress. that horse captain is cool but your chapter master is cooler. I like the highligh in the CM. The freehand on the rhino is great! 1 tip i got from littleblueboys. If its a flat colour paint the surounding area white (you can paint over black when done) then take a 2 b pencil and skentch lightly your design on. there you go, oh and also that camo on the snipers is AWESOME ^0^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm what to buy next??? i was reading in the codex that if you mount a captain on a bike ( or horse) you can take more than 5 models on bikes as troops rather than fast attack. Or im really tempted to invest in the forge world land raider the mk 1b i think with the ww1 looking sponsons im not sure at the moment i know i need to but the art book where my chapter was inspired from. if anyone has clint langleys art book feel free to scan the hammer of dorn section for me

also get landspeeders. lots of landspeeders. they beat bikes by a mile

If you get the fw land raider pre warning the back motor housing at the front top plates might be narrower than the land raider plastic parts you might need to shimm the resin parts to fit.

Really know pits and bumps!

First two pictures posted show that the primer is not a smooth flat finish.

Pic 5 has the left arm all messed up from priming.

Pic 6 has the right arm all messed up from priming.

You need more shading than two colors. Once again I'll throw out the dry brushing. If you can't shade your paint then you should dry brush.

Seriusly , if you dont like something , say it in a nicer way you idiot !

I did say it in a nicer way and then the response was "what pits". Look you can't read a post and go to the conclusion that someone is being mean. My writting style does not go well on the internet. You do not see the tone or get a feel for the way I say things.

I also think you should put some flocking on your bases. They look pretty bland to me. Something should make your models pop. Bases help do that. Right now your bases just look like you threw green stuff down on them and spread it around. Adding some small rocks on parts and grass on other parts might break up the fact that your bases blend in with your models.

Your snipers need to blend into the surroundings. Also what planet or buildings do your dark camo guys fight in? If they are a night attack force then the camo has way to light of grey in them.

I've also noticed that you have part of the sprue left on one of the plasma pistols. This should be taken care off before you glue the models together. My buddy gets on me for doing the same thing. If you do not get the extra pieced off you'll end up forgetting that they are there and have to fix it after you end up painting the model.

As for the pitting on your models. Like I said. Keep a good distance away (about 12-16 inches) and keep the coats light. This way you get a nice light primer that doesn't change the way the model looks. ie gets into places that should have depth, like the lines on the space marines legs.

You should also practice dry brushing if you are not able to shade your colors. What I mean by shading your colors is going from a blue to a dark blue. For you it be a dark grey to a black. Then when you bring in white it should go from a white to a light grey. If you do not want to spend the time doing all this shading then you have dry brushing that will help you with this.

I just lavished myself buy splashing out on 5 MK8 chest plates some heresy shoulder pads and some inquitor shoulder pads ( the commander sprue ones ) and i have a whole heap of CC weapons. gonna make a 5 man vanguard squad without jump packs. because my chapter operates in and arounf the eye they have very close links with the inquisition, seconding some of there vetrans for other duties. when they return to the chapter they are warriors without peer and exel in close combat and smiting chaos filth. o i forgot to add i have a whole heap of crusader and maximus helmets for these guys too. stay tuned

i like the precise check patern But i seems your using a little bit to thick layers of paint ... Also im pretty sure that the "robe" the termanator sergeant has would look cooler if you painted it with Scab red , give it a wash og devlan mud and then highlight with blood red !

meh not really. lost alot of power in the 5th ed with the forgiving cover saves. I'd leave the devs at home if i were you. they aren't the best unit as for an 190 point unit they can be out-ranged, out-combated and just generally shot. I would take a vindi or pred instead. 1 quick question. on your pred have you done las sponsons and twinlinked las as I would not advise it. take 1 melta shot or a well placed lascannon shot and BOOOOM! 165 points down the drain. sorry if im a bit weird. I just made and re-read some tactics for SM's. (correct me if im wrong)

Lovin the Dread', but the highlights on the SM is a little to dramatic and extreme, no offence

Hey thanks for the imput guys, i agree with the needing of some black wash have to buy some of ebay soon. i like the high lights makes the black look less plain

My thoughts on the highlights would be to try a 50/50 blend of grey (highlight) and black (base) as an intermediate highlight that lines all the edges. Then try a 75/25 blend of grey and black on the most extreme edges and a final pure grey highlight on the corners where the extreme edges meet to create light spots. That way the highlights will be more subtle and achieve a more natural look.

Hhere's a few more. This is slow work in progress. I'm taking my time with them. This is the first time I have painted an army.

well played my first game today against a 1500pt eldar army and i copped a beating 1200 to 500 maily due to bad rolling. CM did superb faced off against 1 avatar howling banshees and dire avengers got 3 wounds against the avatar and took down 4 dires and 2 howlees
tac did misirible. scouts worked a treat kept the wraith lord busy dread also did his work. next time will use rhinos for tac and vanguard squads also will remove expensive CC weapons from dev sgt. PS auto cannons and hvy bolters kick ass

Hmmmm well i feel sick now i have just totaled up the money spent on a ten man vanguard/ vetran squad im custom building from a vast kit bash. $120 AUD omg could have got my forge world land raider. i have amassed i stock pile of heresy studded shoulder pads, inquisitor shoulder pads, MK8 torsos, 10 black templar helmets, a plethora of plasma pistols, power fists, hammers, chain saws and numerous other CC weapons. these guys are gonna kick ass.

Update i got a bronze medal in my chefs comp. today i brought some more mk8 torsos and also a black templar mk8 for the sargeant, some pre heresy khorne berzerker helmets for sargeant and 1 for mounted captain. so now i will have a 10 man vanguard squad all kitted out in m8 torsos, inquisitor and studded shoulder pads crusader helmets and a plethora of power weapons and plasma pistols. hopefully fingers crossed all the parts arrive by friday next week so they are at least assembled by saturday for my eldar rematch.

Now for the Fluff
The hammers of Dorn where founded during the 13th founding. The high lords of terra deemed that they need a group of skilled space marines to form close ties to the inquisiton and stage raids in adn around the eye of terror. There gene stock was taken from geneseed havested during the imperial fists fight with the iron warriors during the iron cage incident. The hammers have a deep seeded hatred for all things chaos. They second there veterans to work with the ordo xenos and malleus quite frequently thus honing there fighting skills against the forces of chaos. Some marines become so proficient at this that they are fromed into speacial vanguard squads equiped with deadly close combat weapons and still bear the Infamous I symbol of there former teachers upon there shoulders. The men that form these squads are looked upon with mistrust by there brother marines as these men share some of the deepest secrets of the imperium. One such Vanguard Veteran, Brother sargereant Jacob of the fist company was seconded to a xenos deathwatch squad. what happend on his time away is not known but when he returned he had been awarded a speacial title " DeathWatch Custodes "by the dark angels. it is well known that they warriors of the 1st company of the dark angels are named deathwatch but why he was awarded this title is unknown and he has given no reason as such. The rest of the Hammers of dorn follow a more codex structure relying on devastor squads to pin the enemy while an assualt force flanks or drives a wedge into them. Captain Aviram of the 1st rides into battle upon a genestock bred steed. the steed ( thunder mane ) was a gift to him from the black templars after a brief war on the vile eldar wheres the captain saved the life of one of there ancients. Many commanders scoff at the thought of a horse on the modern battle field but many a times has thundermane delivered the good captain out of harms way and some times into. Chapter Master Samson Delphi is a mysterious caracter he has been around for 780 years and his real whereabouts are only known for 400 of them. at some time during his captency is was tasked on a mission that sent him off alone none knew except the chapter master of the time but 200 years later he reappeared wearing the Articfied armour he now wears and welding a great deamon hammer not long after his return he took up the title of chapter master and thus has been leeding the chater for the last 180 years. he is a warrior without peer and excels at fighting choas and has led numerous personal raids into the eye against chaos strongholds.

Awesome fluff, but I think you got Deathwatch and Deathwing mixed up.

Yeah got a game today against eldar

Deathwing for the DA (think this has been said but w/e : P)

Deathwings one goal is to hunt the fallen so if he somehow captured a fallen angel they would like him a lot. A LOT. If he found out about the fallen angels from that fallen angel (maybe even encountered him and thought he was a missing DA) then the DA inducting him into the deathwing would kinda make sense to bind him to the secret and help the DA hunt the fallen.

how did you fair in the eldar game because you seem to have a lot of very expensive but fragile units

didnt end up playing had to take care of some gak. first game i played didnt do to bad was mainly my dice rolls which let me down

I'd like to hear your tactics.

still developing at the moment but genrally
-anti tank( long range ) devastors in the centre to supress
-anti infantry devastor ( medium range) on the right flnk to deal with enemy troops as they advance
- predator on either flank to supress high value targets
- terminators i move forward and my CM behind them using them as cover so he can engage in CC straigt away
-tac sqd in rhino punch forward into cover and begin engaging
- Vangaurd in rhino i move towards high treat targets
- dread usually accompanies either rhino to lend support at LR with auot or MR with melta
at the moement im thinking mounted captain will mill in the back till lines become clear and he can turbo boost forward and engage in CC asap
this is all being develpoed mind you i have like 4 games experience

Those bases are simply awesome , and that one fits the model very well

I must say the painting is rather slobby . Its got a smooth surface and all , its just not fitting my style(as you could say it)

Something to do with resin and the casting process that after casting a bunch of them it shrinks mine was 1/8" smaller than the landraider parts it was a pita

at the moment my army stands at 2015 without the redeemer and chaplain and 2450 with the redeemer and chaplain. the vanguard come in at a whopping 530 points

Honestly man i must admit that I am not a fan of black as an army color, so I am biased as far as that goes. However i must say that that space marine on the horse is one of the most creative things I have seen someone do with a SM model. Nice job thinkin outside the box

Kick the rhino and throw them in a landraider.... as expensive as a landraider is its more expensive if you are forced to trudge a 400 point assault unit across the battlefield.

Ya I personally have a squad of 5 with jump packs lightning claws and storm shields they are fun to mess around with.

From one non-power gamer to another, cheers on going with what suits your fancy over build optimization. Sure, you might lose a bunch of points to a demolisher cannon. It happens, it has happened to my Space Wolves more times than I care to think about.

For a paint critique: Your helms' visor sockets are rather bland compared to the metallic and highlit armor. The solid slabs of color don't read right. Do you have a good spotter brush to go in there and blend and highlight the eyes? I have a pair of American Painter 4650 5/0 spotters with almost needle-fine brush tips. A streak of thinned yellow or mixed yellow-green, or perhaps blue, along the lower part of the eye combined with a little white spot to simulate light would really bring more life to your figures.

Other than that, however, I like the gold on black theme you have going. You have a good solid layer of paint on your tanks too. I have to brush my tanks, and no matter how hard I work at them there is alwasy some part that is too thin or too thick. Airbrushes ftw, I wish the scheme allowed them.

Hey thank you so much darkreaver for your critiqe hmmm i do have a very fine brush i might practice on a spare helm first see how it goes. And yes i would much rather go with a army i have picked because of caracter rather than whats good for tactics points etc

From my own experience: Use a magnifier of some kind, head or table mounted, if you have never done it before. I wound up getting orange all over a bunch of helms, and had to mix up the base, second coat, and highlight paints all over again to repaint them. And, in a couple of cases (Crusade helms I think, the ones with thinner eye sockets) I got gray into the eyes again and had to do those again too! ARGH! It's a pain, but it is worth every minute. Once you have that down, you can do eyes and teeth on your helmless ones as well with no problem. The little touches like that really bring the army to life.

Well went to a wargaming club today, was very cool setup. PLayed a 1750 point annialation game against IG. well i won 7-1 yay. took out all his armour 1 valkry 1 hellhound 1 demolisher 1 leman 1 chimera and i ton of grunts. Damn his basilisk was annoying. i lost 1 dev sqd, 3 termies 2 van 5 tac and he immob 1 rhino and a dread so overall im happy. fingers crossed i get the time off from work. theres a tournement on in 2 weeks 1750 points. im thiknig of putting vanguard in a drop pod . please look at my army list and tell me what you think and give some advise on a solid 1750 pts cheers

that looses you two turns of shooting if you want to move them put them in a razorback with like weapons say heavy bolters and can screen the squad the turn they jump out.

Hmmmm well at the moment i dont have a land raider or a razor back and im points limited, only 1 dev is in a rhino its just to move them into a better posy but yeah i see what you mean about losing them for a turn or 2

Hey thank i originaly had missiles with the las cannons but got flamed by someone in the lists forum for it

Chicken I don't call them "miss"iles I call them rockets.

The problem with devastators is that you have the two best armor killing weapons the lascannon and the multimelta and they don't play well together the las is long range and the melta short.
So you shoot short and you loose the utility of the las's range you shoot long and the melta can't reach.
The rest are just infantry killers except for the rocket that has two fire modes one for infantry one for light to medium tanks.
So my anti infantry devs are plasma cannon heavy bolter.
Anti tank are ether all multis or las rocket depending on the army.

Yeah thats my setup as well i think ill just stick with it.
atm im just grinding out painting, hopefully fingers crossed im finished by sunday.

Hey thanks alot i tell ya i could have brought 2 land raiders for what they cost me all together but in the end im quiet pleased with them and i think they capture what i wanted of them. just need to buy a new fine detail brush to fix up some thing and then fenito.

For the basing issue, I suggest magnetizing them to their scenic bases and giving them the option of regular bases for tournament play.

Throw a Gryphonne sepia wash over the yellow , kill the mold lines on the plas pistol and wash the black colours with badab black .

Otherwice , great model , i like your paintshceme , but it looks just like The Black Consuls (google it) exept they have a different sign

1. What colour are you using for the eyes ? I might use it for highlighting my SM army .

which part of the cloak if its his loin cloth yeah it was my first gren stuff attempt
i use scorpian green on the eyes
and to do the sword i start of with necron abyss, followed byt some necron abyss and some enchanted blue 1:2. then enchanted blue, then 1:1 enchanted blue and skull white and then the same but 1:2. and finally just skull white . and if you want wash with badab black.

Ok thx for the mixing recipie , now to get some colours ...
