Here is our initial idea for Griffon shoulder pads. Im not sure we will do anything else to them as I think they work as is, I thought about a shield as the background but not too sure on that.

nah.. atleast i don't think so; i remember reading about then in one of the soul drinker novels so atleast then they were alive, although there chapter master did get killed by a greater daemon of khorne

If i ever made a codex marine chapter it would be these guys, nice job

Will you be making a mirror image set?

I know it's not strictly codex iconography, but I think having the option of having griffons on both shoulders without one set facing the wrong way would be pretty useful.

I have great interest in this project.

I'd just love some Howling Griffon icons, big enough to fit on vehicle doors and smalle enough to go on those shields that come in the Assault Marine box.

And some Iron Knight shoulder pads... but that's just me being greedy.

Negative, the Howling Griffons are actually a chapter that a GW employee created about 10 years ago, he made a whole company and they were shown in a White Dwarf issue many years ago.

They are loyalist and showed up in a Soul Drinker novel.

As I recall, in the previous CSM codex, there was a story about something-Griffons being wiped out by Chaos and their chapter master's body was pinned to the front of a Thunderhawk.

Maybe, but each pad done cost in printing cost and molding cost, but its not out of the question

Possibility on the icons, im always pushing glue on icons for vehicles and shields, we will probably make a storm shield just for the griffons.

My Iron Griffons (home brew chapter) would have LOVED these... about 2 years ago. : (

I like the idea of the shield in the background, as it'll mesh well with FW "Raptors" doors.

as for the backstory for the griffons-- they are a chapter that holds grudges. they write these grudges on purity seals or their armor and they will not remove it unless they kill the thing that pissed them off.
Their chapter master was killed by a daemon prince, and his corpse was mounted on the prow of his army's flagship. Every single marine has since written a vow to kill said daemon prince, in order to avenge their former master.

Personally, I think they are kind of cool lmao

well for actual imput on your shoulderpad model, feather renderings on the wings would be excellent, as well as a fur look on the mane. basically I think the initial concept is good but if there could be some more details on the shoulder pad I might consider howling griffons as my next SM army.

hmm we may be able to do that, but we would ahve to print up the pad then send it in for Green stuff sculpting..

I really like the Howling Griffon shoulderpad. They are a successor chapter but I don't know from which legion they were an offshoot. There was also a Howling Griffons army featured in WD just a couple of years ago as well.

You know you want to do Space Sharks.

I think they are an Imperial Fist successor. Dont know about sharks, we are booked up at the moment with designing Space Wolf accesories.

That and I am not sure how marketable space sharks would be.

The Howling Griffons have been around since Rogue Trader. They were in the original write up for Badab along with... wait for it... THE SPACE SHARKS!!!!

The new Lion ones previewed on the page seem a bit, well, flat. I think a raised front paw, or a Lion rampant style would have been better.

Or even just a lion head.

heck ive been waiting for a year to get decals for my howling griffons army, I have over three hundred space marines and scouts and termies need shoulder pads or just decal.... I love the art work,.

These are great for the Knights of Gryphonne too.


They could also work for the Golden Gryphons, although their icon is a griffon "passant" rather than "rampant".

Yeah, they actually avenged their Chapter Master (revealed in Soul Drinker book), it was their Chief Librarian who did so. Further, their chapter is a Fist successor chapter, methinks.

for the blood angel stuff was thinking of some blood angel themed drop pod doors, some jump packs mods(maybe some chapter symbols for em), or blood angel rhino bit (maybe a ba symbol for the top hatch of the rhino or the door on the back.. Also maybe some shouldar pads with tactical, assault, heavy symbols or pads with chapter numbers.

Well we are planning on doing a Wolfy Rhino - think wooden panels and wolfs heads and trophys. We are also going to do alot of Wolf Pads and a few weapons.

As well as a cool Droppod panel.

Pads will encorporate the basic Icons for the different Wolf Troobs, embossed.

We already have some tactical, assault and heavy weapon shoulder pads designed with the generic arrows and roman numerals on them. These need to be finalized and molded.

Blood angels, guys we really cant duplicate the Blood angel icon, sure we can use wings and also a jewel, but we have to be different enough from the GW Blood Angel icon so they dont cry fowl.

I think we can do a droppod panel for Blood Angels as well. Its all about time management as we have alot of good ideas but only so much time and manpower.

I am strongly considering to do a Knights of Gryphonne force... Either that, or the Imperial Guard. Check my avatar for reference of the griffon logo, or Elusive71's comment above. Personally, I prefer to work with decals. But I'm sure this would have much interest.

WRT the Blood Angel stuff, Can you use a blood drop symbol on the panels/pads?
Just leave off the wings, or viceversa?
Make tank/pod panels with a blood drop, leaving room for wings to be placed on it with paint/decals/brass.
Do you already make eagle wing embossments to put on stuff?
And a chalice symbol would be great. Works for BA successors and Soul Drinkers.

Maybe for blood angels a angel shouldar pads or a drop pod that looks like angel wings would be cool? Or a Skull for the rhino top or blood drop. That shouldn't infringe on gw too much.

Ill have to look into it, we are all pretty busy with the Space Wolf range at the moment, we plan on having bits ready for the codex release.

Hmmm... Speaking of blood angel successor chapters, perhaps if you made a sawblade on a shoulderpad... If people wanted to paint a blood drop, or transfer a blood drop on it... It could also be used for mechanicus style forces.

I just saw this topic, and I have to say... FINALLY. I have been working on collecting\modeling my Griffons for awhile now.

Any projected date on production\molding? And are their any plans for Rhino and LR hatch doors (or flat icons that could be glued to said door lol)?

We are sculpting the pads now, Id say eta 2 months till sales. I am sure a flat icon or rather a decorated door kit will be available 3-4 months after those.

it might although i plan to take my time with any possible marines i do next. they were my first army (like 80% of players) and my current crappiest paintjob since i can't bear to strip them out of nostalgia. i've been thinking about converting the new SW minis into a lion/griffon based chapter (instead of wolves) and your line would be perfect once it's complete.

We´ll I have practically speaking finished the chalice rhino kit and drop pod armour right now

As for griffons, I´m trying out different concepts for rhinos.

Ok so I went back just now and looked for the story in the old Chaos Codex... they were never wiped out however the story in the book tied into the Soul Drinkers book...

In the old chaos book, it was the 5000th aniversery of the Howling Griffons founding. As they were heading to their homeworld, Lord Periclitor of the Night Lords attacked their ship and killed Howling Griffon Chapter Master Furioso who was then tied to the front of Periclitor's thunderhawk and it becomes an oath of the howling griffons to seek out and destroy Periclitor (they are obsessed with fulfilling oaths, to an EXTREME extent).

In the Soul Drinkers book, heres whats learned. Periclitor later becomes a full daemon prince, and the Chief Librarian of the Howling Griffons, Marceano, fulfills the oath when killing Periclitor.

SPOILER


The chapter was not wiped out by the souldrinkers either. Marceano later seeks to fulfill another oath in "Protecting Vanqualis, and Destroying the Black Chalice" Whom they think is the soul drinkers. They send 3 companies of Howling Griffons to Vanqualis to wipe out the soul drinkers whom are in the middle of a chapter war, while the non chaos but still renegade Soul Drinkers are stuck on Vanqualis who then makes a comprimise with the revolting soul drinkers, leading to their escape off vanqualis.

The Howling Griffons then attack the Soul Drinkers Space Hulk, "Brokenback" and during the battle, Marceano is killed, it is learned that the Soul Drinkers are not the black chalice, and vanqualis is still in need of protection from the massive ork invasion, causing the Howling Griffons to retreat to save vanqualis due to an oath, how ever, the Griffons said they would still come after the Soul Drinkers because they were renegade and they could not be left alone...

So considering the Howling Griffons didnt send their entire force to Vanqualis and they werent completely wiped out as far as the book says, they are alive and about... Just thought Id share the scoop!

I hate ti be TFG, but in your website, under Space Marine Infantry bits, you've got Dark Watch and Death Angels, when it should be Death Watch and Dark Angels!

'Bout time-Getting tired of constantly having to print off BOLS' transfers for my Griffons.

I recieved my Shoulder Pads today and decided to do two test minis. The picture of the green do not do these pads justice - neither do my paintjobs but here you go. 8)
Be easy on "your paint job sucks" comments - this is just to let you see what they look like on a fig.

Mine just arrived in the mail today; hopefully I can get some painted up on finished figs by the end of the week. Finally no more tedium of working with decals that are too thin and fidily.

FIRST rate execution and casting on these. The image of the griffon is not flat (like I expected), but is dimensional. I will be ordering more as soon as I get off of my SW kick and back to my Apocalypse marine company.

Any chance of Rhino, Raider, and Drop Pod upgrade kits being offered?

Yeah, there will be a rhino. A pod I dont know about though, maybe just a small icon to go on the pre heresy style pod.
I have a zillion things I´m working on at the moment though, I need to finish those first.

Out of interest, Chapterhouse, any news/timescales on the SW bits you were mentioning earlier in the thread? I had a quick gander at your site, and the closest I spotted were the Luna Wolves bits.

The wolf shields and rhino kit should be out in 4-6 weeks, along with some icons and droppod armored panels.

Thanks for the comments on the shoulder pad guys. It really is a nice sculpt and the mold is very well done as well. There was very little cleaning that I had to do before I could get primer on it. I have just received some other bits that need to get painted and I am sure Chapterhouse will keep you posted on those. Keep your eyes on this thread guys. There is some really nice stuff coming soon.
