A good friend of mine and myself game alot and as a result we are usually waiting for long turns to conclude due to both of us playing horde armies. We have taken up the idea of starting to play some music during games. Im thinking Metallica, ManOWar, ect.
My question to my fellow members of dakka is. Do you yourself do this???
I do its awesome
The GW store in my town plays weird cartoonish music and it gets annoying during those tense moments of 40k I personally listen to Folk metal bands becasues for me it fits the aesthetic of Wargaming
Some good bands to listen to are Ensiferum, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Venom. Any good rock and roll
Zeppelin is great too ^-^
Yes good metal bands are great to listen to even when painting. I like metallica, powerman 5000, chevelle, slipknot, audioslave, linkin park *1 hour passes* and stevie ray vaughn.... ok so the last one isnt really metal but man that guy could play a guitar.
I agree SRV was really good, that mans soul was in a guitar.
That being said, I cant stand listening to music while playing. It drives me nuts. Im a calm and cool guy, same when I play, but music while Im thinking of my next move, makes my brain go nutz-O
when painting etc i generally watch a show or movie, like how i met your mother or something, just to fill in the gaps etc, but while battling, i like a bit of metal try hatebreed, and Flaw, both very good
and if you want some awesome drum solos and just epic music otherwise, go for Tool, is best
I love me some metal, but it's way too distracting during a game. My FLGS has an iPod on shuffle with tons of surf, rockabilly and Tarantino movie soundtracks on it; usually played at a reasonable to low volume. Generally pretty relaxing or easy to tune out if it's not your thing. I've tried playing music during games before and it's been consistently disastrous. At that point you're not focusing on the game, but the music instead. Same with having the TV on. Just makes it really hard to concentrate.
Having music or TV on while painting works wonders though!
The music at the local GW bunker frequently makes us burst out laughing during breaks in conversation. It's always trying really, really hard to be EPIC. Ends up being lame.
I usually end up listening to the Ramones, Leftover Crack, or Stiff Little Fingers while painting. Something fast to keep me entertained. Stuff like Metallica puts me to sleep.

Ah, yes the Awsome GW music selection
Like playing " I Like to Move it, Move it" while my entire rmy rules no more then 3 in going through terain

My FLGS plays some interesting stuff, mostly smooth stuff on a quite volume. It provides atmosphere for those shopping and watching, but it quite enough to ignore when trying to really think.
Secondly am I the only one who doesn't play metal when I paint. I'm at the age where pop culture should have me in its death grip but instead what do I listen to, Brubeck, davis, the occasional Coltrane piece. Sometimes I go further back to Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins along with Louey armstrong and Benny Goodman. It is just me?
No you aren't... I've been a jazz bassist for almost a decade and I listen to a lot of benny and Mingus when I paint. Usually though I'm listening to NPR when I paint (unless it's one of my favourite shows of course, then I stop paying so much attention and go back to priming or basing where I can do both at the same time).
My friends and i play music when we game at each others houses, they're all metal but I'm more into Pendulum (before they were main stream) and The Prodigy. I think it sets a good background and the right music can really enhance the atmosphere.
During painting I'll throw the iPod on shuffle. Any music is fine. Stuff with interesting sounds/long instrumental-type sections is good..Above and Beyond for trance, stuff like Isis for rock.
During gametime if I'm playing with my buddies we enjoy some metal to get pumped..Iron Maiden has lots of epic sounding tracks that supplement our games. In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Children of Bodom, etc are good too.
The GW near to me plays lots of war music- from BraveHeart, Last of the Mohicans, and so on.
Whenever your opponent loses an important hguy, you should play "another one bites the dust" by queen. Other than that, I'd recommend listening to Amon Amarth, Lamb of God, anything heavy, really.

Roger that! In our game club of some 5/6 players i often find that I'm watching a game not playing one.
As a result i always like to have some kinda film on in the back ground for something to break up the atmosphere. It can be quite dull just watching games i think. I find that films with lots of screaming, explosions & bloodshed are best.
I have also had drum & bass on a few times.
I brought my Sirius XM receiver and donated it to my FLGS. We usually have the classic rock or Alt Rock station going, and if theres nothing on, we turn on the TV and watch a sports game or a movie. Thankfully none of us seem to be heavy metal guys, which is fine by me, never been much of a fan.
When painting I like to just sit in the backyard and put the zune on shuffle and turn on the noise cancellation on my 'phones. A car could run through my back yard and I wouldn't hear it.
I've got a playlist, but it's down low, just for background noise. I need every remianing brain cell I have to bang together to think tactically lol trying to listen to music would over-load the system and bad things would happen.
"Ok, so I'm assaulting your tactical squad over there. What's their initiative?"
"Lint polkas drive cosmic vibrations cheese of seventy airfoils with lesser tensil focus."
"What the hell man? Are you on drugs? Damn it! It's the music again, let me turn that down."
"Where the hell am I? How the hell did my tactical squad get assaulted!? Where are my pants?"
Soundtracks. I have a large soundtrack collection, most recent purchases being the new Transformers and Star Trek soundtracks, with BSG Season 4 arriving in a few weeks, and we play them endlessly.
In my new place I finally have a sound system that can do MP3 as well, so I can either plug my MP3 player directly in, or burn a million MP3's to a DVD and play it off that.

Soundtracks are great. Gotta love those mp3 playing sound systems and DVDs
I dont really mind about music during games, as long as it isnt Metalcore That said I sometimes turn it off when I want to think, or I just want some quiet.
Metal is awesome, but have any of you heard the soundtrack to 300? It is all classic and is amazing to listen to as you march across the field. I would suggest giving it a try. Listen to Return the King or Submission
Exarch_Nektel wrote:During a game, It's got to be metal, especially if it's death metal.
That rule applies to me everywhere though, so the fact that I'm playing Warhammer make no difference.
Lol Im the same way. METAL ALL THE TIME

Hmm ill have to look that up. It was an epic movie
I either have the radio, some rock station, I like classic rock, mmmm Iron Maiden. or my ipod on shuffle. although to tell the truth once we start playing I'm concentrating to much to hear the music anyways.
I prefer war or scifi movies, like aliens, terminator, starship troopers, predator, platoon, Apocalypse now, full metal jacket, band of brothers and more. Sets the mood.
Why is it that 90% of wargamers are metal fans?
I hate metal. Play something quiet and classical, so that you can enjoy the music when its not your turn, but can concentrate when it is.
It's hard to concentrate when some transgendered attention starved idiot with strep throat is screaming into a microphone about thor know what.
At my local GW they heavy metal, really helps those moments where your decideing to charge or not.
CHARGE!!!!!
I usally play heavy matal and rap only the hardcore stuff.
Canonness Rory wrote:

What... you don't play classical over a game about toy soldiers killing each other. I mean, come on. Does Saving Private Ryan have Mozart as its ambient music?
As my first post indicated, my group listens to soundtracks while playing. The only heavy stuff we'd play would be Bolt Thrower.

Lol I cant imagine a massive ork charge to Behtoven's symphony.
Actually metal relaxes and calms me. Everyone is unique and react differently to different sounds
Sgt Rinehart wrote:How can you not play Bolt Thrower during a game of 40K?
We always play music when we play. Usually it's metal (Metallica, Disturbed, etc...), but if it's a particularily epic battle or campaign, we have some of those WWII Movie-style tunes, and some fittingly GRIMDARK Symphony
So far, my favorite song to listen to while playing 40K is "Indestructible" from Disturbed. That song is made of raw mansauce.

There are many kinds of Metal. Speed, Thrash, Death, Heavy, Alternative, and so on. I too hate Screametal and any other format where the Singer just yells or screams with no real vocal skill. Thrash and Alternative are good though, because you actually get singing
Twalks wrote:Music=necessary... never heard of this bolt thrower tho.. how old are they?
Oh my God.
Please tell me you're joking. Every wargamer has to have heard of Bolt Thrower! Since you haven't brushed up on your death metal history much, listen to me, grasshopper.
Bolt Thrower are a death metal/hardcore band formed in 1986. Some of their albums, song names, and cover art is from 40K/WHFB. They've got songs with names like Plague Bearer, World Eater, and Iron Warrior, and one of their albums is called Realm of Chaos (pictured above), which is the name of the two books released in 1st edition 40K which introduced Chaos to the setting.
Ever listen to the theme music for battlefield 1942. Absolutely awesome when you play guard and have a tank squadron advancing into a mass of infantry.

My group normally listens to 80s rock/pop, techno or stuff from games. Songs from Warriors Orochi 1 & 2 get played a lot too... Only one guy likes metal, I don't know who but somebody keeps fiddling with the playlists...
I listen to Armin van Buuren, Dj tiesto, James holden, Mark norman etc when painting and background music. I even use it when i read, work or have to do some intense thinking. In the beginning we used to have the tv on but it was more of a distraction.
And people, be mindfull of the volume when your listening to music as you dont whant to go and damage your hearin or even worse, get tinnitus as there is nothing you can do to fix etier of them. (Unless its from muscle tension in your jaw neck)If you get it your screwed... The thought of having a permanent ringing in your ears untill the day you die realy scares the crap out of me!
I laways use small and discreet hearing protectors when out clubbing/partyingat live shows and sometimes when im at the hockey areana. Having people screaming in your ear is never good! I use these http://www.bellman.se/web/mediacenter/ERhand.jpg they are made out o sillicone and form fittet to my ears. They dont distort the sound in anyway thanks to the electronic filter at the end, its like turning down the volume on your home sound system.
They cost a bit, around 320$ USD but its totaly woth it
What's with all this metal? Seems disruptive and hateful to me. >.>
As Dash mentioned, the running dialogue with my opponent typically blots out any music ("str4 against t5, need 5+ to wound..." ad nauseum).
Occasionally, though, when I play at home I get the chance to set up a playlist of...Enya! Soft, gentle music is best, mostly because I'm new to 5th and get way too reckless when, say, Billy Idol is screaming for a Shock to the System.
Unfortunately, most folks I've seen lack my sophisticated taste in music for gaming and simply insist in dangling their cell phone earbuds from their ears in a very real attempt to deafen themselves..........
I listen to Ministry (band from Texas), Aerosmith, Marylin Manson (who has his own brand of Absymth), Def Leppard, Hootie and the Blowfish. And bands like that.
I listen to blasting music when I am painting. But during games it gets annoying only when I am about to loose do I turn on "The UnSung War" From Ace Combat 5 probly the most epic song I have ever heard and it inspires my guardsmen to die standing never failed a moral check with that song playing.
lordofthedead wrote:my club listens to the halo soundtrack
So they listen to the same song remixed a couple times...
I jest.
In all seriousness my club doesnt play anything. When those quiet moments strike all you can hear is the hum of the air conditioning.
If they did play music, I hope it would be something along the lines of DragonForce, ACDC, anything classic rock oriented, and the occasional comedy song (read: Weird Al) thrown in.
Lol I'd completely forgotten about them I'll have to go and dig them out, the first album was one of the funniest things I'd ever listened to! RIP Mark & Lard
On a serious note, we usually don't have music on while playing, and to be honest I'd find metal or anything to vicous really distracting. Soundtracks would be perfect though as they're supposed to be in the background rather than taking up people's attention. Stands to reason really
I listen to metal, rock, and alt while playing. Some fun gaming music. Andrew W.K.
Music I have found that doesn't fit.
Portishead - Makes you want to put a Las pistol to your head.
They Might be Giants - I get to distracted by the songs. Singing along.
During gameplay our GW played LotR soundtrack and similar soundtracks
While painting it's either with a movie on or sometimes my exotica music going- Martin Denny Arthur Lyman and with some surf rock mixed in like the Space Cossacks.
in any game I play in the heat of a battle I always reach for the 3 inches of blood, Amon Amarth, Lamb of God, or Slayer. they are my personal favorites for gaming. Then Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna is also nigh on perfect for very very tense moments
Music is too distracting. Every time there's ever music involved people start to zone out and don't really pay attention to the game anymore. Having background noise just muddles up the whole event in my experience.
i play metal when i play because when i play, i play to have fun and what more fun then watching you opponents khone Berserkers tearing though you like with LET THE BODES HIT THE FLOOR. blaring out loud in the background .

2. We Will Rock You

Also, Princes of the Universe is a great 40K Queen song even if it is about Highlander.
Haha those three songs were good at first, but now hearing them for the X time they just annoy me
I play whatever comes to mind but me and my friend love to listen to music. I like Cursive, which is Indie but REALLY good. However, I mostly play one band as it is my Favorite, Chiodos.
Best Song Probably
Video is bland but the song is amazing.
I also like MSI, Isles and Glaciers, Gorillaz, and some other stuff.
Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Disturbed, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Cream, Soil, Saliva, and (despite the fact that the pessimist in me says no-one will know of them) InMe. Metal all the way.
PS I actually fell asleep with in-earphones on and my mp3 playing disturbed at full volume with bass boost on once, woke up 10 hours later with 2 seriously bad earaches, not recommended

Haha yea almost all of those bands are awesome and I would definitely listen to all of them in a mega play list while gaming.
I have done that many times as well, but the greatest time was when I woke up to the song "Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine
I like to stick on October Rust by Type O Negative, loud dark gothic songs about werewolves, pagan gods, threesomes and lesbians nothing better to crush the enemies of the Imperium to
OK i should have been more specific the song in question on the threesome/lesbian front is called my girlfriends girlfriend which implies that although they are heretics they are willing to do the decent thing and bow down to the emperor (fill in the blanks yourself) lmfao
One final one. It might be old and incredibly difficult to find but is worth it would be the album Oblivion by D-Rok released on warhammer records. But as I said it's like rocking horse s**t to find.
It depends on who is playing, and on the game type. If it is the horde armies we play a lot of stuff like Whitechapel, Born of Osiris, Waking The Cadaver, and The Acacia Strain.
If its Horde vs a small amout such as SM its soundtracks from 300, Star Wars, LOTR, and Dragon Ball Z.
And When its the monthly Big Battle where we put every unit on the floor and see what happens it is techno, comedy, and the bloodhound gang. or anything we can sing to.
