I'm pretty sure everyone is aiming for the "I'm not the stereotype!" when they submit their answers to the poll. I'm 95% sure most people are lying when most are "average weight" (although this really needs to be clarified).
I'm sure most people will fit into either the "overweight" or "underweight" category. A look at my FLGS suggests the overweights are the adults/extra late teens and the underweights are the 8-year-olds.

We have a few of those gym-guys at the local club...
I, myself, have yet to decide where to work out to stay fit. Working nights isn't the most healthy thing, so need to compensate. Leaning towards swimming a couple of kilometers 2-4 times a week. Should be just about right...

Normal is subjective and those BMI things are a big joke IMHO. Great way to stereotype health in general.
Having a few extra pounds doesn't make you overweight or skinny, or even normal for that matter. Different races have varied frames, and established dieting "guidelines". Some people are naturally allergic to milk, some cant eat oranges, lots can't eat nuts.

I remember when I first encountered stones. I was so confuse, I thought you just got a bunch of stones and used them to weigh people compared to stones. I was younger then of course. Looking back it was pretty funny.
I put normal weight. I'm very thin though, lithe even. I'm six one but I weight 175. It's exactly where I should be on the BMI. But I work out pretty often, not a lot of weights but I run at least six and a half or seven miles four nights a week and occasionally do some weights. When people pick me up they often tell me I am very light. But I feel like they are just trying to flatter me.

66% of Americans 20 years or older are overweight (1)...so either the poll respondents are mostly overseas, the truly overweight gamers aren't responding...or gamers are lying (Gamers might be 'fitter' than average Americans too...heh).
I think you need to specify what is considered overweight, rather than just gut feeling. For example, at 185 lbs and 6 foot, I'm considered borderline overweight by a BMI index. Do I view myself overweight? Nope, I think I'm fit.....but survey says I'm borderline;

I'm a bit shorter than my mother, I don't remember how tall my dad was (I was only 7 when he died), but I think he was around 5'10", so I'd be looking at average height when I'm fully grown.
Then again, my brother was my height until he was 16, and now he's 6'6". My grandfather on my mother's side is also fairly tall.

I do personal training at least once a week, but cos I focus on weights, Ive tended to build muscle and strength, not lose weight. I can bench 75 Kilos, and am out of breath after 3 flights of stairs!

Nice pick darkkt,
I think people don't really understand what overweight is.
5'11" and 74kg about,
a little overweight (as I am not that built) but I am fairly athletic (Tae Kwon Do, Tennis and Basketball).
If you have a gut you are overweight, Not normal!!!
(Normal is not way too skinny and definitely not fat - I don't mean 6 pack, but come on guys, if you can afford to loose 5-10kgs weight you are OVERWEIGHT)
If you have tire around your waist (albeit a small one) you are obese medically. 30% is obese medically , well for guys at least (And I am surprised how many guys think they are ok). It's really easy to get here!!
If you have more than this,
you are morbidly obese.
When over 40% of the US and Also Australia are obese I cannot Imagine that people really have a good idea what obese is if we only have 8% obese or higher. That's just not true!!
I wish it was,
But it's not. :(

5'9", 175 lbs. Not great, but not fat either. I got my leg messed up in the Army and can't run for the rest of my life (my leg will shatter if I do), so keeping weight off has been a challenge not at all helped by having to eat Army chow while sitting immobile in a hospital for 6 months. Im 6 foot 1 inches with a weight of just over 11 stone
thus my BMI is around 20/21 (a healthy BMI is 20 to 25, its its under 20 your underweight and its its over 25 your overweight) so i consider myself to be average weight.
Dispite this i used to be quite fat, giving me lots of goddamn loose skin that hides my manly muscles

To find the demographic body size of Gamers take the usualy demographic and tilt it slightly to the overweight. In my FLGS most people are Skinny/Normal weight, I'm overweight by about 2 stone or so which is ok I spose, theres maybe about 3 -5 others my size or abit over and then only 1 really big guy, who works there, not attends.
I find more gamers to be underweight than over-weight. In England atleast.

I have been working out pretty hard core for the last year or more (5+ times a week), and I have done nothing but gain weight. I went from being 190lb after a diet, to now being 220lb. I don't eat badly by any stretch, but I do love to have a soda everyday. And I hate NOT being able to eat what I want on occasion. I have a lot more muscle now, but I look like those guys you see in the 'before' pictures now a days for the 'tone up' products. They aren't fat, but they don't have the definition of the 'after' guy. I realize if I go on a diet again, I"ll lose the extra weight and become the 'after' guy. But, I likes me some Dr. Pepper once and while and that's a NO NO!!
I don't really care to be honest. As long as you are healthy, that's all that matters.

Meh...I'm unusual. At age 14 I'm just over 6' in height. Last I checked I was 130 ibs, but that was five months ago. Grew up an absolute stork, still skinny but at least my arms are a little 'toned' now. (Tae Kwon Do has positive effects on one's physique. I started about 1 year ago, just got my blue belt last week.) I'd guess I'm around 145 pounds now. So I guess I'm underweight. Last time I bench-pressed I maxed out at 150 ibs. hell, average at my youth group for pressing in my age group is 120-130. It was really fun this one time, a kid my age called me a skinny weakling and challenged me to arm wrestling. I beat the crap out of him--won all 5 rounds

BMI is basically a measure of your weight, given your height. It doesn't measure body fat, it's just a simple ratio (I believe).
Alpharius is right. It's actually fairly inaccurate when it comes to measuring health, as a very muscular (low body-fat) person may rank in the overweight category, despite being in great shape.

I'm at the very low end of "healthy weight,"according to those height/weight BMI charts back in high school health class - about 6'1" and a little under 150lbs. Born huge, been thin as a rail since the baby fat came off and I started really growing. It's all metabolism. Back when I was training hard for soccer I'd eat like a horse, doing 2 miles, 450 push-ups, and 600 sit-ups before we started practice, which ran 6 days a week. I was strong, I was fit, and I still never broke 150 pounds. Whether fat or muscle, I just don't get particularly big. You can see a difference in my build since then, but it's not that significant.

Bmi is a broken system and a horrendously inaccurate measurement tool.
Example: at 6'4" the BMI scale weight range is between a dangerously thin 145# and a fairly healthy 195#. A weight of over 205# is considered "Overweight." (BMI = 25). The low end of the height scale only allows for a weight varience of 10-15# while the upper end of the height scale allows for a varience of over 50#.
It does not factor in things like muscle mass vs body fat, (Muscle is heavier than fat) so being more muscular actually throws off your BMI.

Also, I freakin' love your avatar. Too bad that quote was never in the Republic.

I've got a healthy 2-3 inches of fat on my 6' frame, but only in the torso area. I eat when I'm hungry, I don't when I'm not, snack on vegetables and fruits more often than not (except chocolate. That stuff's awesome) and I'm not afraid to sprint or powerwalk (though I'm not really an endurance runner- never have been). I'd probably be considered pretty handsome in a Hunter-gatherer society, but in the modern, food a-plenty society, I'm just a bit overweight.
But a healthy overweight. I've got dense bones, too.

I was a serious weight-lifter right up until I got sick (MS). I ran three miles every day, swam and played racquetball frequently, and could bench 215. I even played local league hockey. At that point I weighed between 185 and 190 lbs, in a good way. Since getting sick, though, I'm like the Incredible Shrinking Man, and I'm starting to get moobs (while my six-pack is slowly being hidden away by a dickie-doo). I am 5'9 at 180 pounds. According to my BMI I am overweight. I played football since I was small, I think that's what gave me my football player shape more than anything else. In high school, I got into weight training. That is probably where most of my weight came from since I didn't hit puberty until I was 15. I do not find myself overweight at all and I'm sure if you asked anyone that knows me, they'll tell you I'm in great shape...or ok at the least. I hated the BMI measurement. My gym teacher made the overweight people run laps and exercise harder than the other students. I was able to do these easily of course...I have to give myself credit But it still felt unfair. I am definitely not overweight.
I do tend to notice that alot of wargamers are unhealthily obese or skinny, with most of us in fine shape. Each time I meet some of these guys, I have an urge to inform them of how to get into better shape, but I don't of course. That would be a bit rude at the least. However, since this is a forum, I would like to inform all of you people in unhealthy shape to walk more often. Do not take the car if you're going to go somewhere only 20 blocks away. It'll take you 30-40 minutes walk at the most. Also, drink water instead of juice or soda, water hydrates you more and does not contain sugar.
And the most important of all is your diet. If you eat meals, only eat three times a day, no more no less. Have less meat, that is the part of the diet I don't get. People just find the having less meat part hard. It's all fat for Terra's sake, forget it. You are not a carnivore, you do not need that much meat. What you do need alot more of are wheat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, and seafood. Seafood is probably the most underestimated food category in the United States when it comes to health and fitness. Remember people, exercise counts, but your diet is where it is at. One plate one meal. Don't stack your plate to ten pounds. Contrary to popular belief, a pile of food is not one plate. It's human trough. With all this in mind, there are no secrets to a healthy body except a combination of exercise, diet, and motivation. You need all three to build a healthy body. I hope at least one person here reads this and take my advice. Just one, and I'll be happy that I helped make someone elses life happier.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
I do have to say, I find the diet part to be probably the only thing keeping me from being morbidly obese. BMI says I'm 'overweight', and I do have a nice 2 or 3 inches of fat on my torso, but I can sprint, jog, climb, etc. without problem, despite being something of a computer bum.
Thing is, I eat when I'm hungry, I don't eat when I'm not. I don't stuff myself, but I don't deny myself a full portion when I feel like it. If I'm not hungry, I'll skip meals, if I'm craving something, be it Chocolate Gobbs or Lettuce or fish, I'll get some of that.
Your body knows what it needs. Listen to it.

About a month ago I fit into the obese catagory, now I'm happily in the overweight catagory and dropped two bmi points. Still I've got a ways to go. Being 6' tall means i'm not nearly the blubber ball people expect when the word 'obese' pops into their head, but I'm certainly not a spitting image of the Greek ideal either.

Exactly... I think this poll is pooly put together. It doesn't include categories like "Athletic" and isn't specific enough about what it means to be over or under weight. So it makes me mostly assume that people's answers are not as accurate as they could be.
I'm personally in shape, though likely underweight compared to the normal person my height - 6'2". I workout at the gym and rockclimb with the gf quite regularly. I could say overweight, but compared to a lot of other Americans out there, and what quite a number of my friends say about how skinny I am, I'd just go with normal weight. Considering oneself normal is rather convenient in about all circles, though certainly this poll isn't quite accurate, as weight is just one part of one's body type, within one's relative size class.

See, I don't put much stock in "overweight" as a guideline for BMI. Why? Because they're basically comparing you to an Aryan workoutaholic who spends their entire day making sure they are in shape. Normal people, in today's primarily sedentary culture and workforce, will almost always have a few pounds 'extra'- and honestly? That's not a terrrible thing. Means you have extra insulation against cold weather, and a store of energy if you ever are stuck in a situation where you have no food. One thing you see on shows like Survivorman, where the 'survivalist' is in 'perfect' physical condition is that he's basically starving to death in 2 or 3 days, when someone who's 'overweight' by 50 pounds would be fine for a week.

Actually BMI assumes you have an average muscle/fat ratio. Gym rats and pro athletes mess the scale up by having much more muscle mass compared to their height, and comparatively less height, than the average person, which means that they'll show up as overweight or obese when in fact they're in great shape. Modern people are unhealthy, yes, that doesn't mean that we should start considering unhealthy the average. There's a middle ground between starving to death and 50 pounds overweight, and in modern western society we have gone just a bit too far towards the overweight side.

Except the 50lb overweight guy wouldn't be able to do at least half the things the in shape guy can. Could they cross the powerful river without being swept away? Probably not (the extra surface area from all that fat, not to mention the lack of muscles certainly wouldn't help in fighting against a current). Could they climb up a rocky mountain/slope to get to a better vantage point in order to determine which direction to travel? Not likely (The extra weight, and lack of finger strength certainly wouldn't help with the ascent). Face it, being out of shape doesn't make you more survivable than a fit person. An person in optimal shape could provide for themselves, accomplish goals they needed to and out perform a person in less that premium fitness. But sure, I suppose the out of shape person could last longer on just lounging in a hole doing nothing... though I'm not sure that's very ambitious nor very good long term thinking.
This isn't to say that I don't like people of different weight distributions. I am just arguing against your justification for being over weight as a means of being better able to survive harsh environments and physical feats... Afterall, who ever heard of a Fat SM? The Emperor wouldn't have it!

Did I say out of shape? Or rather, unathletic? You can be fat and still be athletic. Defensive Linemen, for example, or Sumo Wrestlers. I had a friend who stood over 6' tall, weighed over 350 lbs, was most definitely overweight... and he could carry a railroad tie around.
And besides, isn't the best thing in most survival situations to stay still? Unless nobody knows you were gone, or you're being actively hunted, you shouldn't wander around unless you know for a fact that civilization lies in a certain direction- and you never know that for a fact.

I was clearly talking about people who are out of shape, not just people with extra weight around their muscle. You didn't clarify that you meant fit people with a heavier body type, so I took it to mean that you were saying a person that is of no apparent physical merit would be better off than a person that trains excel in physical activities. (A linebacker is included in my "fit" list of people)
And sure, we can talk about plenty of if-then situations. If you're being chased by a pack of wolves, if you're trapped in an ice cave, if you're stuck on a hot jungle island, etc... My argument is that being overweight doesn't give you an edge over a fit person. Being fit gives you an edge over an unfit person.

In unrelated news, this is a cool emoticon:
Er, dude, I'm not defending being overweight. All I did was explain what BMI is and how especially muscular people "break" it by appearing overweight when in fact they are quite healthy.

Yeah, I know, I was agreeing with you.

I suppose there's always an exception. Though the emperor certainly would cast out the plague marines as well..

I fit the girl gamer stereotype completely and hate every moment. Been overweight since I was 8 and have a great level of complex issues as to why I am still... as I really, really want to just be fit. (Fit as in active, not 'fit' as in attractive btw.)

I'm pretty normal... but as there are many americans here I might be skinny. Should change the poll to BMI instead.

Am about 1.69m tall and just under 80kg, so I'm heading into overweight territory. Though I am quite barrel chested as well.

I'm a body builder. I can hardly put overweight beause that gives entirely the wrong impression. Why is there no athletic answer? 5 of the people at my local club are ruby players for goodness sake.

I've actually managed to put on some weight in the last few months. I used to be around 115-120, now I'm a solid 140+
Most people don't like when they see they've put on weight, but after being so underweight for so long it's an awesome sight for me

Congrats Piz! I know exactly what you mean. I was stuck at 120 all through junior high school even though I ate a ton... I was finally able to put more weight on in high school.

Underweight, can't gain anything, regardless of what I eat.

Try napping after a big meal, and only having a single, massive meal a day.

Or work out. Muscle builds more weight than fat.

Yes but muscle is harder to build than fat, and if he is having trouble even getting to a healthy weight...
I love muscular definition tho. Sometimes I just feel my abs for gaks and giggles...probably some deep psychological flaw behind that but oh well

Just a tad over
40-44 inch chest (depends on sport I'm active with, Boxing and Wrestling, 44 swimming and track 40)
30-32 inch waist

I started playing tabletop games when I was 9, and I was underweight and very skinny until I was 19, when I started lifting weights. Now I'm average weight for my height. I'm no bodybuilder though.

I am very underweight. (I am 6 feet tall and around 120 lb.) I think that while gamers in general tend to be a bit on the hefty side, that wargamers tend to swing back towards the middle of the spectrum.

I already do that XD Can't be bothered to make food more then once (I'm a lazy git).
Also, I do work out, but for some reason I don't get bigger muscles they just seem to get denser. I also used to cycle 15 miles a day to school and work ( in total about 8 years ). So my legs are awesomely powerful And even though I'm quite a heavy smokey (might help with the underweight issue btw) I'm a great sprinter
I weigh like 70 kilo's right now. And I'm 1,86m.

Well sprinting, cycling, and bodyweight exercises aren't gonna get you bigger muscles! Also though, if you continue to up your muscle density, it will eventually grow somewhat, with the added benefit of DEFINITION! Something great for density AND mass is kayaking, you should try it. I started one day and it was as if muscles were magnetised to me I am one of the top kayakers in my province.
