GW's new prize draw.. @ 2009/08/03 19:22:03

Post by: reds8n

..which goes someway towards explaining those T shirts methinks perhaps ? That and the new podcasting thingy.

This is actually pretty sweet ;

It's been over a year since we launched the new games-workshop.com site in the US. Since then we have been adding new versions for the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Eire, Denmark, Australia and Canada.

With one website, we can now add new content and features in five languages at the same time - you can already see the results with What's New Today, Astronomican and The Best of White Dwarf archive all launched in the last few weeks. And this is only the start...

Through the last year, we've had a lot of support and feedback from hobbyists around the world so we thought August would be a good time to have a bit of a celebration of the new games-workshop.com, so we're having not one, but two prize draws for registered customers of games-workshop.com

Hobby Centre Competition

A Battleforce or Battallion to be won in every Hobby Centre
At the end of August, we're going to be doing a prize draw for every Hobby Centre from all the registered customers who put that Hobby Centre down as "My Store". The winning customer for each Hobby Centre (now with over 360 worldwide), will be able to choose a Battleforce of Battalion of their choice on their next visit. Terms and Conditions apply.

Global Competition

Three Global MEGAPRIZES
We're also giving away three of the biggest prizes from Games Workshop ever in a global prize draw from all games-workshop.com registered customers`;

1st prize: A trip for two to visit Games Workshop HQ, The Studio and Wahammer World, including flights, train fares and hotel accommodation.

2nd prize: Every new product that Games Workshop releases for the next twelve months

3rd prize: A 5,000 point (game legal) Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 army of your choice.

As with the other prize draw, Terms and Conditions apply.

How do you qualify for these prize draws? Simply register on games-workshop.com. If you're already registered, you're already in the prize draw. We'll close both prize draws at the end of August and notify the winners in September by email.

Time to read the terms and conditions, and see how I can cheat horribly to win prizes 1, 2 and indeed 3, plus the free Batallion.

I think I'm already Registered on the site. 99% sure I am.

Wonder if this could become an annual thing? Free stuff is usually good stuff (I say usually, because no matter if completely gratis, stuff like being shot in the head, kicked in the nuts, set on fire, buggered by a rabid Donkey is never good)

But why would you want to win that first prize?

I'd much prefer a 5k point army or every new GW product for a year.

GW's new prize draw.. @ 2009/08/03 19:27:47

Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik

Indeed but a visit to the Studio is still pretty dashed cool.

Perhaps if you win 1st, you get 2nd and 3rd as extras? Stacked prizes like?

Mekboy wrote:But why would you want to win that first prize?.

Because whilst Mr. HBMC was in the Nottingham area he could, for example, pop down the road to visit another company that might sell wargaming products.

..... still I guess with GW's prices of late compared to air fares then.. ah, you can fill it in yourselves from here on in.

The free battalion thing is pretty sweet as well really, I'm guessing that 99% of people who post here are already registered anyway.

Perhaps, but the actual monetary value of 1st is much higher for GW than 2nd and 3rd.

hmm, they seem like pretty cool prizes. A free 5000 pt army might be nice. I'd take that over 2nd place. If I won first place, I dunno who I'd bring with me.. my girlfriend would laugh at me if I asked her to fly to england to play army men with me.

You might think that... I doubt it though. I'd find it somewhat hard to believe that they'd fly you in for one day, rush you through HQ, and send you packing. Especially given that airfare is cheaper if you spend more than a day somewhere. So you take one day of your 3-day, 4-night trip at GW, and one day wandering around whatever part of London seems fun to your gf, and she'll love it.

I saw this a little while ago. How sweet it would be to win an all expense paid trip to Warhammer World.

While Prize #2 would be very nice, after thinking it over, Prize #1 would be nice for someone like me that would most likely never to go to those places on my own dime. Then again, unless the market turns against my company again, I probably could never get the time off required to use the prize. Odds are, whoever wins #1 will already live close to the UK HQ.

I wonder if Prize #2 would include ALL new releases such as new Apocalypse Sets and Direct Only or just the "normal" monthly new/splash releases?

I've been to Warhammer World a couple of times, it is very cool. The gallery is great, and of course it has Bugman's, which is a properly Warhammery pub, with Orc heads on the wall and everything. Visiting the studio would be very cool too. I hope this is an annual thing!

i was just thinking that with no2 in the international one, and assuming that all gw releases are included, eg apocalypse, and GW does release a plastic warhound/thunderhawk, would they release before of after the end date

GW's new prize draw.. @ 2009/08/03 20:33:34

Post by: reds8n

I would very much doubt that the giving away of a single warhound etc if thet were to release such an item would cause them to delay the release date.

If you think about it, it is one hell of a crafty wat to then get you to spend £/$ on the army you ust got the free book for.

Postal service are going to hate you if you live somewhere awkward or remote !

Hrm. Seems to me you don't need to actually frequent a local store to rack up the 'mega prizes'. Nice.

Now.... for the people with many GW stores within driving distance... could you enter multiple times with different email addresses? Surely such a thing is underhanded and only for the unscrupulous, but is it monitored, I wonder? Hrrm.

The thought springs to mind simply because I have 2 accounts (Since I just made a new one when the first one was locked, just so I didn't have to bother calling customer service), and would hate to be disqualified for it. Luckily I don't think the second account has any personal info in it.

Certainly I'd never think about COMITTING such a lowly and base trick....

EDIT: I find it ironic that some people think MegaPrize 1 is rubbish by comparison. Usually I'm in total agreement, a physical prize is so much better than a short lived trip (Such is my philosophy when I approach the Price is Right). But I think in this case I would definitely prefer the first. Primarily because I have no interest in everything GW is releasing in the next 12 months, just whatever new waves Guard get. And secondly because lord KNOWS I don't need another 5000 point army! Or 5000 points MORE of a current army. Though if I were to win this one I'd likely milk them for 5000 points of Deathwing, then eBay it.

And funnily enough, just this morning I caught myself wishing I could go to Warhammer World for a day, and put it on my Life's "To Do" list.

1st Prize decidedly crap for anyone in the UK. Ooh, a free trip to the burglary capital of Britain to have tea and biscuits with Jervis.

And anyway I've already been (although neither tea, cakes or Jervis were on offer on that occasion).

There is a first time for everything

The value of the first prize depends greatly on your proximity to HQ, I live two miles away so it would be limited value to myself but if you live in Oz or the States it could be pretty good. I'd love to win third prize, 5000pts buys a lot of Orks!

I've just registered and realised that the data GW amasses from their target market by doing this prize draw would be very valuable indeed, it would be interesting to see a breakdown of the age ranges and locations of gamers.

I have a sudden urge to (if by some freak chance I got the 3rd prize) build a Skaven army.
Consisting of only Clanrats (4pts) and Slaves (2pts)
At $50 AU for 40-80 points i think i'd get my money's worth.
Take that, GW.

Realistically I don't know what army I'd get. Maybe IG? It says it doesn't include forgeworld tho :(

Now, to find the most obscure store I can with no-one who goes to it

The Forge World thing, I believe, only applies to #2.

2. One prize of every new Games Workshop product available through games-workshop.com for the period 1 October 2009 - 31 September 2010. This does not include Forge World or Black Library-only releases and does not include any age-restricted items.

But I can't think of any real way to make a 5000 point army with the restrictions they have on #3.

3. One Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 Army up to 5000 points. The army must be legal in accordance with the Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 main rulebook and applicable codex/army book.

Sorry, John, it says Warhammer/40k, no mention of LotR/WotR. Why do people think they will get to choose the specific minis? Every time I have heard of people winning the "army of your choice", they only got to pick the army, not what specific minis make it up.

That would be true, just I've never seen them say 'A 5000pt game-legal army of your choice'. A Battalion of your choice maybe.

Better check the fine print. Anyway, I agree with some of you guys, the 1st prize doesn't sound all that great. I'd much rather have 2 or 3, or whatever the cash value of prize number 1 is. Getting to see Warhammer World doesn't sound all that entertaining, especially if you're one of the lucky few who live within driving distance anyway. But a 5k point army on the other hand...

Warhammer World is over rated.
Let's see now...Marvel at various statues/uruk hai....15 minutes. Gawp at gallery with all the models in.....45 minutes. Looking around the store....10 minutes. Looking around the main room with playing boards....30 minutes. Bugmans Bar....However long you choose to make of it.

You can spend at best an afternoon at Warhammer World if you're not there to play games or get drunk.

Presumably there is a way to add multiple adddresses, so you can identify your Home vs. Work vs. Weird Ed's addresses by a short nickname isntead of the full address.

I think Papa John's online ordering does the same thing.

Oh well! its not like we'll win it T-T ( can you imagine having to glue / trim all those metal squigs lol )

Ewwww I dont want to think about it... I also thought about a full night goblin army... you realize how many night goblins you would get with 5000 points... I would never get them painted... EVER

I would give away 2000 pts as payment to get 3000 pts painted.

You can spend at best an afternoon at Warhammer World if you're not there to play games and get drunk.

I think that may be the point.

It's probably only the stores marked Hobby Centre on the find a store feature (aka, only their own stores). So just Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag for us Dutchies.

There are none in Lousiana. Or Mississippi, as far as I can see, so I'm never anywhere near one.

I bet just like the draws at games day its going to be rigged.

They ask for your age and will probably go through and only pick jimmy ADD who will get 5000pts of useless junk while any smart gamer would say "get me 5000pts of your most expense models so I can sell it on ebay".

Give me 30 Ogryn and 9 Valkyries and I'll sell that for $500 easy.

Same deal with the warhammer world thing they are going to eliminate anyone in Britian from winning it since you are a car drive away.

I question GWs motives behind pimping their website so hard.

3 elite slots of 10 ogres each and 3 fast attack slots of 3 valkyries each, and still have a few thousand points left to spend on other stuff.

Surely if this was an Evil Scheme (tm) they'd eliminate anyone OTHER than from Britain (hell, maybe anyone more than a bus-ride from Lenton away) to keep their costs down?

If it were rigged then I'd definitely expect them to pick someone from Britain not the other way around, then they don't gotta pay for airfare and they'll prolly just have you sleeping on Jervis's sofa anyway

I don't quite understand the vibe coming off alot of the responses in here. GW puts together a no purchase neccessary prize draw and some people can't be happy about it? I see more than a few negative or "If I win I'm gonna work over GW" kind of posts. I'm not trying to preach, I just find it wierd.

Personally I'd love the first or third place prize. I don't know about the second place, because I don't play Fantasy or LotR, and I only have two armies in 40K that I'd really be interesting in add on to. New releases outside of those two 40K armies would just kinda be in hobby limbo in my game room or maybe donated/traded to the local game club.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of enthusiasm for the first place prize. Sure Warhammer World might not hold it's enchantment for a player for more than one of the days, but I don't think they'd drag ya out there and not let ya talk to anybody. From reading this forum for a while I'm sure there are some people that would like to meet developers and ask them "What were you thinking!?" amongst a thousand other questions.

I can't imagine GW giving a guided tour of their HQ to some lucky winner and then letting him leave empty-handed. I will probably get some goodies and when I'm back I'll let you guys know what I got...

I'd love to win any of the prizes too. I already asked my GF if she wants to go on the trip with me.. went something like this..

me: "Hey do you wanna go to england?"
gf: "that might be fun, is it for work?"
me: "no, the company that makes warhammer is doing a contest where you can win a trip for 2 to england to go to their HQ and play with army men"
gf: "..."
me: "hello?"
gf: "You could probably take your nephew..."

Dunno.
I can't win a local prize because they closed my (profitable!) local GW. :sad panda:

The Megaprizes are all cool.

1) Hey. Cool. Free trip. Maybe I can jostle someone's elbow in the studio while they're painting. lolz

2) Holy CRUD! EVERYTHING they put out? People are SERIOUSLY underestimating the amount of product released in a year.
"I don't play Warhammer or LotR!"
So? Feebay it. It's all profit.
Bartertown it for things you DO want.

3)A five thousand point army? Yes, please!
I don't know which I'd choose, but it would NOT be SM, CSM or Orks (only because I have those already). Maybe I'd go out on a line and get the new Dark Eldar if they're out by then? LOL That's a LOT of models, regardless of the army.
Might be worth it to go IG, just to see the big boxed horde delivered to your doorstep. lol

Glad I already have a profile there!

Eric

If I remember correctly.. in a WD(I think) a long time ago, there was some one who won a tour of HQ , they let him basicly fill a few bags with bits from the bins.

Im pretty sure they wouldnt leave HQ and WarhammerWorld empty handed.

I wouldnt mind a 5k army. I think I would go for Undead. Just to make them give me 5k points worth of Skellies hehehehe

Yeah, I can't imagine they won't make that HQ trip worthwhile. Although the prize would obviously be more appealing to someone living outside the UK than to a native.

Prize #2 is the least appealing to me just because it's a mishmash of stuff that I'd have to trade to get what I want. Might take me a week to figure out what I want for #3. That'd be some serious list construction, LOL.

Games days are a fine example, there is a part on the card that says "is this your first games day?" and "how many years have you been in the hobby?"

Whatever their requirements are the GW guys in charge of the draw will go through the cards until they find one they like i.e. Jimmy the A.D.D. kid that has a year in the hobby.

I suspect this contest is no different, I dont expect GW to give a 5000pt army to anyone that knows what Ebay is. I sure wouldnt mind 9 valkyries, 30 Ogryn and over 200+ DKoK models (plus whatever else) that would make me an easy $2000.

gorgon wrote:Yeah, I can't imagine they won't make that HQ trip worthwhile. Although the prize would obviously be more appealing to someone living outside the UK than to a native.

Oh hell yeah, I priced it out at something silly like $3000CAN to do a tour through England.
