I know Americans tend to get drastically less than Europeans, but wondered what the average was here on dakka...

47 days last year.... there are times that I really love the company I work for.

Depends really, most of the time I only go to the GT's at warhammer world with a large group of mates (for a proper woman not allowed weekend of beer, football, toy soldiers and general foolishness that we cant do in front of our better halves) I class this pretty much as a holiday, people think it strange but i get to go to a place I love with awesome people and relax all weekend.

This year I was lucky though, I got taken to Marbella in Spain, nice place, nice bit of coast, nice women and a good place to kick back with a load of dex's and GW novels I really should catch up on (nearly upto date with Gaunts Ghosts and Ultrasmurf novels now).

I get plenty of vacation right now. It really isn't that Americans don't get a lot of vacation, although certainly some don't, it really is that many don't take that much vacation. Our country, for whatever reason, is filled with workaholics who just don't spend enough time enjoying life...but that's not me....

I work two weeks on - two weeks off plus have 6 weeks of vacation. It's like being semi-retired! Ya gotta love it.

Aussies get 20 days annual leave a year by law. As I work for a Uni, I effectively get an additional 8 days a year.

In the Military, so I get 30 days of leave a year. Then there are passes, and the occasional DONSA (Day of no scheduled activities = day off)

Work for/with my Father. Days off are working days if necessary.

16 at the moment. This includes any sick time I might have to take.

You think its bad here you should move to Japan...we got nuthin on those folks...my father in law technically has 70 plus days but they never get approved...as for me I should have 2 weeks but my boss always seems to deny me my vacation...

I get 1 paid week off a year,plus 3 days for Christmas,Thanksgiving day,Fourth Of July (if applicable),2 0r 3 other holidays,so 14 days give or take.
Next year should be better,as I move into 2 paid weeks vacation a year.

Oh yeah, no doubt! Japan is filled with even more workaholics than the US! I was just comparing the US to Europe, and explaining the fact that many Americans willingly work instead of taking vacations.

And a vacation... The only 'vacation' I've had in 10 years was when I got laid off a month ago and had nothing to do for 2 weeks.

I'm a student, trying to get into the workforce, so i would only count my vacation's as day's away from school my bday and Xmas

I get 16, 10 vacation days, 5 sick days (I think the last time I called in sick was about 8 years ago) and 1 floating holiday, which i normally use to take my birthday off. As for why we here in the US don't use our vacation time, I think it may be that while we get paid for the time we take off, we don't always have the money to go somewhere. At least that's how it is for me.

I get something like 21-25 days a year, including bank holidays etc.

Though that will vary depending on how many hours I work (10 hours work = 1 hour off).

I don't get sick pay either, though I am being paid slightly more than is average for the area I currently work in I believe. Can't wait to get a better job with real pay

Hmm, as a student I really never seem to have days off as there is always something due. I get a few weeks at Christmas, then some holdiays but thats it. I'll be student teaching in January so I think my spring break disapears. Not as bad as it sounds though.

I'll get my 25 days of holidays per year from the labor agreements in my line of work in and on top of that some 10 bank holidays.

20 paid normal paid holidays 9 paid public holidays (we even get a holiday for a horse race) 8 paid sick days and 2 paid parental leave days.

I get roughly half the year off. Perks of being a teacher.

There are Mondays where I want to come back to work just for that reason.

A guy that I know used to tell his wife that he had to go in and work on Saturdays, usually 2-3 times a month. Instead, he'd go hang out with his single friends, and would usually end up taking a nap on their couch, then heading home about 2pm.

I am a high school teacher- and I must admit that my calling provides for plenty of vacation time! As far as pursuing hobbies- this is a huge fringe benefit(especially summer vacation). The only downside is not getting choose when I am off as with other jobs. My wife works in retail management and much of the time my scripted weeks of vacation don't match up with when she can be off. That being said, I'm not complaining- I think I actually work about 180 days in the year.

For the record, I would like to challenge the Phineas and Ferb promise of "104 days of summer vacation". I guess that means I show up to teach in November this year rather than September!

Oh, and as far as posters above joking about spending time with kids- it's the best thing about a teacher's calendar. I love being off all summer to play with my three sons, especially my oldest- my WH40K buddy!

It all depends when you're a grad student... It's usually a week in April, August, and December, but sometimes I don't even get that. And even when I DO get time off, it's probably spent working on something that had to be done a long time ago.

30 paid vacation day + up to 13 holidays wich sometimes can be payed too.

24hr facility. I may take the 10 days of vacation a year, but I end up working double shifts the same pay period, so doesn't even out to much since we have to work the holidays.

I'm an Aussie, but as a contractor I only get a day off when there is no work to do. As I am the only technician on my region's contract, doing field warranty repairs over a 10000 sq. kilometre area, my days off are few and far between. But then again, Australia has at least 10 public holidays to boot, and I can't pick up my parts if the depot is closed. I'd still work then if I could.

I've got this morning off because my car is in service till midday, but then I'm back on the road, fireballing down the coast to make up lost time.

The beautiful thing about being self-employed is that I can have however many days off I want. As long as the bills are payed, lol.

US Military, i get 30 paid days a year, most public holidays grant us a day or two off. i can have as many sick days as the doctors decide to send me home for (but for most stuff they just tell you to suck it up and go back to work), and up to 30 days after a major surgery (doctor's discretion).

Im a student, so I basically have every day off.

As a space marine i only get 15 minuits free time a day which i usally use to go to quicky mart to stock up on bolter shells.....

I day trade stocks so I can leave when ever I want. Just set my stops before I leave. Sometimes I even paint while trading or watching ticks. Helps me relax.

I get a week at the 4th a week for x-mas and like 7 more one day holidays...but no days I can pick on my own.

I love being an aussie school kid, we get about 5 public holidays, plus 86 school holidays, AND we are aloud 40 sick days yes 40 sick days before we are forced to repeat. for a total of 131 days off.

I'm a middle school teacher, so I get about 3 1/2 months off a year. It's much needed though.

I am a student, but i get 1 month and 5 days off for christmas, and the typical spring break but a long summer.

As a student, I guess you could call my M-F work.. considering I'm an aviation major and there is A LOT to do. On weekends, I go home to work at the hospital. I really never have any time off to just sit and relax, but it hasn't gotten to me yet and I'm lookin forward to the hefty check when I finally get out of college.

No paid vacation ever though

I get 22 days, and that's my vacation, sick and personal time. I just got a bump up from 17 after having been at my company for 4 years.

Most I've ever had in over a decade-and-a-half of professional work is 25 days at a previous company (again that's vac/sick/pers). I thought that was almost more than I could ever use.

I think I read a while back that the U.S. and Japan get the least amount of vacation. And keep in mind that "vacation/holiday" in the U.S. doesn't always mean "not working." At my company, if you were on vacation in Guam and sleeping at 2 am and didn't answer your Blackberry, you could get some grief about it later.

I just left a company that offered six weeks from the gate for two weeks now. But, long story short, for a better quality of life with my family, a promotion, a raise and a huge increase in job security, I consider that well worth losing four weeks of vacation.

I am a student so I get breaks from school....but im also employeed full time so my holidays consist of:

I get 3 weeks (15 working days) of PTO; paid time off. That goes to cover vacation and sick days. Including the bank holidays, I get a total of 19 days off in a year.

Also, my PTO days do not roll over into the next year, so pretty much I use the rest of them the month before my annual review.

I'm a college student.

So that's four months in summer and around a month and a half of days off.

4 days extra because of the years i allready worked
11 extra because i work 40hours a week and i have a 38hour contract
15 paid holidays
I do have to say i'm above average, i work for a university.

Also i can stay home 1 day a month without a docter's note...

Well, I'm an intern, so I don't have any benefits...and it's been that way for over two years...I haven't had a vacation since I finished highscool. I worked all the days off I had while I was in college, and now the only days off I have are weekends

In America we would call you a socialist pig because for some reason not having a risk of death an the like is good enough treatment for workers. My dad worked every day of his life save weekends and even then he would usually get called in on Saturday. His lack of complaining wasn't the sign of strength his dad taught him. It was a sign of weakness to corporate douche baggerey.

I'm in the U.S. military, so I nominally get 2.5 days a month (30 days per year). However, I hardly ever get a chance to actually use that leave; the last time I took any was back around Christmas.

I'm an american working for a european company in American. I get four weeks vacation plus the standard 8-10 American holidays per year. It's pretty great.

My employer is particularly generous with PTO (Paid Time Off), which accrues (with my position and seniority) at something like 13.5 hours per pay-cycle. We also accrue sick time at roughly 1/3 that rate.

Being self employed technically it could be as many days as I want but realistically it tends towards the "No holiday ever" choice so I put 1-5 days a year.

I have a total of 5 weeks per year plus 5 days extra unpaid.... It makes my annual stay in the gorgeous Philippines much more palatable.
I mean, who wants to fly for 18+ hours then factor in a large time difference (+8 hrs), effectively taking 2-3 days from your holiday time, only to do it again 9 days later!?

That and being able to stay rent free in my house just 30km from Manila......it's all good.
Add the LGS in my local Mall and I'm a happy bunny.....

6+ weeks paid vacation, plus the 8 national holidays. The usual is 5 weeks in Norway. Although this year is the first in 3yrs where I'm actually able to claim more than 2 of those 6 weeks.

About 200 days a year. University is fantastic.

Holiday? HA! I make $7.70 an hour, and I'm lucky to get 30 hours a week. Rent is $350, utilities average $100, gas is $25, car payment is $90, plus gas for the car, food, etc. It gets PRETTY rough....

Being serious: half a jear. Im homeshooled, and my family is traveling literally half the jear. I was introduced to warhammer 40k in sweden, and im hoping to get to england soon cause of all the gws xD

I'm working in China, teaching in a uni so I get a combined total of 5 months (2 of which are unpaid)
2 months for summer vacation
1 month for winter vacation
1 month for September (freshmen must undergo 1 month of "boot camp")
and combined national holidays through out the year gives me another month scattered over the other remaining months

Here in New Zealand I am about to start summer holidays. They will stretch from November 15th to February 7th ish. Plus school holidays between terms makes up 6 weeks during the year.

So I make that roughly 18 weeks a year

yeahhhhhh. I am average again. I work and go to school. NO vacation for me.

I get 33 paid days for holiday including bank holidays.

80hrs a year. It sucks getting so little, but the fact that I can take as much or as little of it at a time is nice.

I get 31 days a year.

But I also work 10 weekends and a share of bank holidays, so it probably averages out at 9.

As much as i want to have, european? proud of it!

Vacation? Between working a job that gives zero vacation or sick leave and studies, there is no vacation. I mean I got Christmas off, but I think that's the only holiday the store is actually closed. It also landed on a Sunday, a day I don't normally work anyway, so zero technically.

Most nursing jobs don't give any national holidays off (It's not like you can close a hospital for a holiday), but instead give employees holiday pay or for working the day + an extra hours of pay or extra vacation time for the holiday if they work it or not.

I like it more working at jobs with three 12 hour shifts per week than five four hour shifts per week. It also makes vacation days somewhat relative because taking a day off requires 12 hours of vacation time per day to be used instead of 8 hours. The upside is every weekend is a 4 day weekend, but the 4 day weekend doesn't necessarily include Saturday and Sunday. All of that being said I can't stand being on 8 hour shifts, and I love 12 hour shifts.

Well, I just had my last 2 months of summer break. Now I'm at my last year of school and after that, Ill be joing the reserves for about 9-12 months then I'll be joining the RF! (Regular Forces)(either as an Officer (2nd Left-Tenant, or as a Field Engineer (Sapper)).

I have loads of holidays, as I am highschool.
Lots of spare time for painting and gaming.
