Dark Eldar! We seriously have not had a codex / model update in over ten years.

What 40k army is most in need of an update? @ 2009/08/19 00:45:37

Post by: Sha1emade

Necrons. Mostly because of the limited options. WBB problems. Older model range. Dark eldar might be older but have had a few mini updates along the way. They need a massive revision. I would say crons would be an easier fix then the DE as most of the product line would or could remain in tact with the crons.

I play crons....do you really need a better reason.

Dark Eldar.

I don't play them, but not having a new codex in over ten years is a little off. It also annoys me when an army still uses rules that don't exist anymore, and have been replaced for good reason.

Necrons work fine right now, but they'd be the next in line for revision.

After them, we need a traitor-guard codex. Lost and the Damned or whatnot...

That's just my opinion, though.

I ended up saying Necron's over Dark Eldar because they Need an update to make them somewhat competitive and generally flow better while the Dark Eldar are doing fine with the latest version of the rules but are a close 2nd.

Who said Marines need an update?!? Really?

Chaos Marines - to make them back into actual Chaos Marines, not naughty Ultramarines w/Spikes.

Chaos Daemons - to erase the Codex from history and put its units into the Chaos Marine Codex.

Dark Eldar - 10 years without a Codex is bad.

Necrons - They don't work in 5th Ed.

Tyranids - Ditto.

Tau/Eldar - Written for a different ruleset.

Everybody knows the Guard needs the biggest update....kidding, its either:
Dark Eldar: 10+ years for an update is wrong, even if the creepy fluff sucks...
Daemonhunters: I'm a Guard player, allied Daemonhunters would rock with an update, especially with
the release of the Daemon codex.

Tyranids and Necrons can still perform well IMO, and dark eldar are fine. (not saying the above dont need the update, but...) Tau suck so bad.

Space Marines... hands down... they need something like 2+ armor/cover/inv save whenever they are on a table top with ap 1 guns that shoot 72''... and something like 20 attacks... you know... things to bring it up to speed

Accidentally only marked Daemonhunters. Forgot about DE.

Anyway, Daemonhunters really need the update more then most, simply because they're just so... *sigh*

At least DE can still be competetive without Land Raider spam.

I had to say Squats, please don't beat me!

To be honest they if can't deal with 12 races they should drop the number no good having a live race if it basicly unplayable because you have no rules for it.

Personally i'd throw all the forces for chaos including DE together.

leaving:

Good:
SM
IG
Tau
Eldar (are they good?)
Sisters and Deamonhunters (combine)

Bad:
Orks
Nid's
Forces of Chaos
Necrons

What 40k army is most in need of an update? @ 2009/08/19 10:48:11

Post by: Sanguine Sympathy

Lawbringer, there is no such thing as good or bad in 40k, there have been many discussions over this, but the end-result is that most races are morally neutral. Secondly, Dark Eldar are not aligned with the forces of chaos at all. Chaos eats eldar, spiky or not. I agree with merging the codices for the inquisitorial forces, but leave the divided space marines, and the chaos space marines/daemons split (but let them ally)

IMO DE, Inquisitorial, and Nerfedcrons need the biggest updates.

Dark eldar unplayable?
i don't quite agree.
i play them again (after a 7 year pause) since the beginning of 5th ed and i don't have any problems.
the codex is imo one of the most balanced ones there are.

The dark eldar codex has bits in it from the freakin' third edition rules, it desperately needs an update.

I think people just want them to nerf the ultrasmurf special characters as an 'update'....probably.

Necrons could use an update, but not as badly as Dark Eldar

yeah the whole DE situation is fairly ridiculous. Just look at their HQ selections vs the Space Marine options and you get an idea of how pathetic the situation has become. Necrons aren't lagging far behind.. but really some Inquisitorial-fleshing-out would be badly needed as well hey? Maybe lumping the SoB's in with the Ordo Hereticus? Releasing a bitz box to convert regular guardsmen into stormtroopers without having to flop you're life savings on metal miniatures. At least til a decent plastics box comes out. Ordo Xenos? you've already got em in the Nid Hating Ultrasmurfs with their fancy hellfire rounds or watever.. but yeah. those would be top three..
What does everyone think about lumping SoB's in as part of a massive Inq Codex? epic win or epic fail?

My pics are Dark Eldar and Necrons.

Dark Eldar might be playable in 5th but a 10 year old codex leads to some unusable wargear, and many units that are terrible or overcosted.

Necrons have no customization at all. With one type of troop, phase out, and no reliable antitank they really suffer in 5th.

I completely forgot about Nids sadly, they need one too.

Cheers

DE need it bad. Nuff said.

Deamon hunter and witchhunters need to be combined, and be called "forces of the inqusition" (spelling). AND be able to still link with other armies.

Nids and necrons need it too. Nids possibly more...

Tau dont need it THAT bad.

SPACE WOLVES need one too.

My choices came down to Dark Eldar, Necrons and Demonhunters.

I dropped Dark Eldar because even though they have an old codex, they are still competitive.

Necrons were crippled by 5th edition, but I voted for Demonhunters.

Not only do demonhunters suck, but they have a ton of special rules and abilities that are now obsolete when they came out with the new chaos/demon codexes. Add to this that it would seem that the new IG and SM codexes were not meant to have allies.

SW need a update (and will get one). The DA/BA/BT could need a little tweaking. We also need more SM; both blood ravens and iron hands would be nice. By then the vanilla-sm-codex need another update.

And how about those squats ? They need some major work.

What 40k army is most in need of an update? @ 2009/08/19 23:18:45

Post by: Airmaniac

Daemonhunters have some pretty bad rules and need to get plastics as well. Besides, as Blackmoor pointed out, the SM and IG codici are clearly not designed to bring Daemonhunter allies.

Necrons and Tyranids need a rules update. The necrons could do with some new models as well, but it's not like the entire line needs a rework.

Witchhunters and Dark Eldar could really use some new models (especially the Dark Eldar). Both armies are fairly competitive though, so updating these armies would mainly be about the models.

Really?...Really??
Ok,to be serious,of all the races in 40k, DE needs an update most of all, they have been stuck in limbo for 10 years+ now and it's WAY past time for GW to get off their collective backsides and show DE some love (or at least screw them up as much as they have all the other races).

Necrons have alot of trouble these days just because of fifth edition existing, Dark Eldar should get it by principal, and then the inquisitorial forces after that. 'Nids are alright, imho, they could use some tweaking and reworking but they don't need it that bad. Chaos Space Marines need to be redone, everyone needs to get their money back, and all copies should be BURNED. (I just read it, can you tell?) Except for abbadon, who they nailed.

I can support this statement for the most part, and would add that each blazing copy of that horrid excuse for a codex should be forciably jammed into Gavin Thorpes [ The following has been deleted by Inquisition].

DE and Necrons. Come on now... those two are gimmies, and I think we can all agree on that one...

There are two others I'd also put in my book....
Lost and the Damned is one of them. They were really cool to play against, and then they kinda got wiped clean, like the other one I was thinking about....

SQUATS.

Well, yes of course I'd love to see a return of Lost and the Damned, not sure it would qaulify as an "update" though,as GW foolishly dosn't even support this fantastic army.
As for Sqauts, meh,I've seen exactly one Sqaut army in my whole 40k gamming experinces, and that was 9 years ago (after they had been "sqauted"),but now I see people lamenting the loss of Sqauts as though they were the SMs of the 80's and early 90's,I do however feel it was pretty fethed of GW to yank an army people invested their time and money in,so sure...bring back Sqauts too.

Why do the Dark Eldar need an update?

Old codex and bad minis? That constitutes a "need"? I guess everyone who votes DE are painters because they are not players.

There are armies out there with a relatively newer codex and nice minis and are unplayable.

Playability seem like a greater measure of need rather than looking pretty.

What 40k army is most in need of an update? @ 2009/08/20 07:20:54

Post by: crazypsyko666

I don't think that anyone's complaining about the Dark Eldar being a bad army because it's so old, it's just so old that by principal it needs an update. It has been about eleven years since they've made one. It needs a revitalization, something to intrigue new players. Models help, new codex's help, so it's logical to come to the conclusion that a new codex is in order.

What 40k army is most in need of an update? @ 2009/08/20 11:45:25

DE are actually seeing a resurgance in interest and new players right now! DE models are back on the shelves and newer players are picking them up as if they were a new army here in the u.s.
Oh, and DE are very competitive.

Necrons, however, are so poor in gameplay that they could actually drive off players who are new to the game and make the mistake of buying them.

Which army needs a new book?

Accusing DE of not needing an update simply because their codex is incidentally competitive in 5th ed is not acceptable... By that logic, no army needs an update.

We might see viable DE armies, but they all use the same few units... It's like Nidzilla. Functional, but very lame that there are so many other units in the codex that are so incredibly not worth using. And even if their rules and units were all useful, the models alone put them at the top of the list for an update... GWs neglect of DE is the stuff of legends beyond extraordinary. It has turned the army into the shame of 40k with their atrocious models, shallow fluff, and rules that need to be filtered and translated just to make sense in 5th edition. Just fething do it already...

I like the SoB army codex. It is playable but the assault troops suck.
Sisters Repentia have to make their way across the board to the combat. Survive the first hit; then they are deadly. As long as the player can get good dice rolls.

Seraphim need a higher STR to wound. Yes, I can see that with melta bombs assaulting a non moving vehicle is effective.

Actually only Guard and SM are 5th ed with SW coming out in October

I voted Tau as (I play) the rules as written are so bad a blind man with no hands could write them better, then DE for after 10 years is sad (bad GW, bad, stop it, stop it, stop it.)
Inquisition really only need plastics and assault vehicles on LRs

Even being relatively new to 40k, from what I have seen so far of the Necrons, Inquistion, and DE (armies I considered starting for my second) I was turned off by their outdated dexes and outdated models :(, despite the fact I would have loved to play them for fluff and overall coolness. I think these 4 armies from what I have heard, read, and seen need a big update, followed quickly by the 4th ed codices.

So the DE codex has been out for 10 years? Seems silly that they haven't been updated at all in that span of time...

I agree with this. The Lesser Daemons in the CSM codex sucks. I'd rather use the old codex.

Daemonhunters because Grey knights now have so many almost useless rules it's vexing. And they're too expensive/weak compared to others. Still love em but the need some fixin

And CSM. Recombine CSM and Daemons, or make them useable together, these summoned lesser daemons are ridiculous. Why can't CSM and Daemons join like DH, WH, SM and IG?
Also we need special legions. The fact that I can take 9 Oblitz, 2 Sorcs, 2 Squads of Ksons and lots of other randoms in a Zerker list annoys me. Mebe 3 Codexes that can all be used together? Loyalists get it.....

My picks are Dark Eldar and Daemonhunters. They both really deserve a codex.
Dark Eldar may be competitive in games but they've gone 11 years without a new codex and look awful on the battlefield.
Daemonhunters look alright but aren't at all competitive.

Csm need a new codex for sure, we really got jipped out on the last one,

I mean who wants spiky sm with less equipment and no 'and they shall know no fear rule'

I haven't touched mine for years as a result.

I know de are in desperate need but I quite like the fact their characters are still uber, if they update them the characters will be weakened

omg please give the necrons a new codex that fixes the phase out or at least let you manage it or save or something. Its so crippling on a widely used and loved army, but so many players stop playing because you just cant win games as well as other races. I also put down dark eldar cause they need a new book and more importantly some 13 or 14 front armor vehicles. While im on dark eldar they need some more armor and defensive type things. I believe the codex says that this is not a assault force or a defense force, but a raiding party. I voted tau because i play them and the only reason why i did is they really didnt give us a big wow 5ed we basically have some nerfs some buffs and 2 new weapons, I guess i just expect more seeing what space marines get as far as options. I also voted orks, but the only reason why is cuase i think some of the foreworld stuff needs to to be put in the codex and giving a miniature. They put stuff in white dwarf all the time that makes ya all giddy and then you cant find the miniature anyware and cant use in most games. Still though Dark Eldar should have a codex update along time ago seeing as all the units and vehicles are not meant for 90 percent of games played by warhammer 40k. oh and why are we about to come out with another chapter space marine codex when we have whole armys that need updates. I mean lets say 1/3 of the player drop there present marines and go space wolves. Thats still no where near the number of necron and DE players that NEED a update. shame shame

My 2 extra cents: Just a thought but since Dark Eldar take prisoners all the time and even consolidate after assalting always to get prisoners. Why not have units or wargear set up so that when they take prisoners they use them as body shields or put a mindcontrol collar on said prisoners and send them off into there once friends. Now thats dark eldar fluff meeting the table game play.

Dark Eldar
Necrons
Sisters

Most definitely The Dark Eldar

What I truly would like to know, is how an army that is relatively popular and could quite possibly get many many adepts, has escaped a renewal of their codex for so long.

I do not believe GW would admit to this delay as their finest moment, so there has to be a true and deep explanation as to why this is. I can understand reasons like "oh, we just make more money constantly with marines", or, "it deserves a true face-lift both in miniatures and fluff and we have not had the time". Whatever the reason, I would really like for someone on GW (assuming they haven't already)to provide an explanation. This need not be necessarily in the form of an apology, but being the cool army that they are, it escapes common sense that they have received so little attention for almost a decade.

Add to that the pain for the fans in not knowing if they will ever get one! GW owes clear-cut answers; some level honesty regarding this, even if it just a simple: ".. we really don't know!". It does not hurt GW to level with its fans, we love their work DESPITE all their flaws....

DE of cours...10 years, I mean like the models have got a dust coat 2cm thick since the late 1990s!

Also necrons. I have yet to buy a single model, and I was gonna start with the mechanical grampas with green glowing stuff, until I discovered the troop choice:
One single troop!
The fast attack is either so expensive or so weak (1 wound on destroyers!) its worthless
The only really customisable model is Necron lord!
Only two HQ choices!

Man, then I turned to CSM, they not better than Smurfs with pointy stuff!

Aaaaaaargh! I don't wanna choose tau, and nearly everybody plays nids already!!

Not yet, though this will probably be the case after the new Codex is released in January.

On topic though:
From a rules perspective, I think Necrons need an update badly, as do Tyranids (but they are already next). After these two armies actually get decent rules to deal with Vehicles in the 5th edition (which is pretty important in the current meta game), they can update the Dark Eldar, Daemonhunters and Witchhunters. These three armies all have fairly competitive builds (especially the Witchhunters), but lack internal Codex balance (as in: there are only a handful of useful units in each of these Codici). Obviously they could use new models as well, but as I said, I am looking at this from a rules perspective.

Am I the only one who thinks it's lame that the armies lose options and flavor when they get updated? Not as in being able to choose less types of units, but in being able to customise the units with different options less. To me it seems like they're making the armies more streamlined and simplify them to the point that they lose their flexibility and flavor. I'm not saying they're only making things worse when they update, I do however think that this is the main downside to it.

I happen to disagree a little bit here with Zebbmann. Not on a general basis, just simply in the case of the new Space Wolves codex. The Wolves maintained the same abilities (except losing runic charms and wolftooth necklaces for the wolf guard) and even got some more options with the thunderwolf cavarly and the Sagas. I believe the entire army has improved its abilities. One may however complain that the Wolves did not receive the Thunderfire cannon, but other than that it seems like The new Space Wolves codex has very much improved and has even had some extras added to it!

I believe that this example alone disproves Mr. Zebbmann's argument for the case of the Space Wolves, but that does not exclude the fact that he may be right about other armies...

Post by: Zebbmann

Your argument is interesting, because I haven't actually read the new Space wolves codex, and to me this is good news.

My argument is mostly based on the Orks and Chaos Space Marines codexes compared to their previous editions, and to some extent, the new Space Marines codex.

I am not overly familliar with every codex, or even half of them all, it is just a pattern I've seen in those codexes I am very familliar with.

I do however think, that the cause of this is that the whole game is becoming less and less "roleplay oriented", and by that I don't mean the game should be like Rouge Trader, but I mean there's less and less focus on individual warriors such as Nobz, Sergeants, Aspiring champions, even Warbosses and the like. For example a Nob in the newest Ork codex has a limited range of equipment to chose from, while in the previous codex, he could chose from most of the armoury. Another example is the new 5th ed rule about when vehicles in vehicle squadrons become immobilised. To make the game "Simpler" you count the vehicles as destroyed, except if it's the last vehicle in the squadron, instead of the more realistic rule in the 4th ed, when it could still shoot unless the rest of the squadron moved away from it which made it count as destroyed.

The game is becoming more massive, and while this isn't necessarily bad, GW has made it in such a way that I think it takes the focus of the individual models, who before could be heavily personalised, but not as much now that their options are much more limited.

And I think that in a way, the game loses a little bit of it's soul when this happens. Different people's armies become more similar to each other, and creativity and options become more restricted.

Battling with large armies is fun, but I believe that this could still be done even if there was more focus on the individual warriors, since the creativity is always optional, and you only need to customise your warriors as much as you can keep track of.

Dark Eldar first and foremost. Tau have nice models but need a new 'dex. SoB could use plastic minis since all-metal armies are more expensive than most people will put up with. Daemonhunters could use an update for the sake of keeping up with the other armies. 'Crons could use a bit of an update.

And what would be the benefit over a "v2"?
- no reasonably-costed Stormtroopers to replace IG Storms
- no Mystics for IG
- no Psychic Hoods for IG
- no Assassin for IG.

The only thing that would happen is GW would screw things up.

I agree with Newt-Of-Death. Make a FAQ but if there's a new edition of the game, include rules for the armies and knock it all out at once. Of course, this doesn't make money for GW so they'll never do it.

Having to buy new codices every few years is just money grubbing on GW's part. New rules are fun, but for what we pay we should get some more support than just a WD catalog that comes out with shill each month.

Make Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Daemonhunters playable and the sales of the models will come.

As far as it goes now, I'd say Necrons-Sisters-Tau

Are most in need of updates.

This poll was started 2009/08/18, so why is it still popping up as a current poll on the site's front page? "Daemonhunters" don't even exist under that name any longer and Dark Eldar are now more than six months past their update. Shouldn't this thread be retired and perhaps replaced by a newer, up to date poll on this topic?

I feel that the Necron codex is in need of some new units... or at least a revamp of certain old ones (flayed ones, am I right?). Also, Phase-out needs to go.

Poll needs to obviously be restarted, seeing as dark eldar are in top 2, yet they were released before the last.

I'm not reading 6 pages of posts. Did someone say "squats" yet?

edit: lolz, 2 posts before me 2 people said it

If squats doesn't count then i'll go with imperial agents, or if people want specifics, either mechanicus or arbites.

If you want to talk about one that they'll really make, then I would have to go with black templar.

I voted for Necrons Tau and CSM but I gotta agree after reading that DE hasn't had an update in 10 years, they should probably get one too, but from the few DE players I've gone up against, I kind of wonder, what would be so different as they're already pretty competitive?

Other Dark angels and Black Templars merged. Kinda like Codex Angels of Death in 2nd edition.

Also bring back jinking and other rules that made DA unique.

That would be cool, would love to get Intractable back

I would just like the point costs, wargear and unit options to be bough into line with the likes of Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Vanilla Marines.

If you build the same list with C: SM and C: DA, the DA list will be upwards of 200pts more with very few differences.

Necrons. 5th edition took a big chunk out of their Gauss rules and We'll Be Back is nothing now. And it certainly doesn't help that aside from Destroyers their army sorely lacks speed which has become an aspect of the game that most armies need to consider to remain competitive. With 5th edition we saw foot slogging Marine armies begin to die off which was fine... they can take Rhinos and things. But Necrons can't and as it stands now it's far too easy to just run circles around them and pick them off at one's leisure.

I also think Chaos Marines could stand to have SOMETHING done about them. For a while there they were really hot gak but now they're more bland than Codex Marines but they're still very playable.

Tyranids - Ditto.

Tau/Eldar - Written for a different ruleset.

Black Templar, at least from a model line standpoint. Templars only have 4 actual models of their own, 2 of which are special characters and another is nigh unplayable, the final of which is the Emperor's Champion.

It's about time that Templar players don't have to pay upwards of 70 dollars just for one squad of true Templars (if you buy the upgrade sprues). Even just the release of a Grey Hunters-style box set for Black Templar would be appreciated.

No more power creep on the Space Marines! It would be crazy, Dark Angels would get Free Power swords for everyone or some such nonsense. Bear in mind I'm a Marine player but think that the Marines need to be shelved for a year or two because the rest of the races are suffering from lack of attention. I think the Tau might have snuffed it, nobody from GW thought to check in on them and see they are alive? They got all lonely and took their own lives.

Just get everyone who's not on their 5th codex(Orks, Chaos Marines, Tau, Eldar) updated and ready to be competitive enough to go into 6th edition so they wont get LoL Raped by Marine armies. Its sad when most of the leader boards are filled with Grey Knights and other Marine Equivalent.

Dark Eldar are perfect right now. Theyre a well balanced army with their latest update.. They use blitzkrieg tactics and abilities as their defense/offense like no other.

Orks need to have some stuff switch up a bit, for example: Ghazhkull needs to be cheaper if GW isnt going to update his rules. He needs to come with a good invulnerable save bare minimum and fearless would be nice. I swear for his current price he's hella to expensive compared to the abilities of Marine hero's. Ghazhkull isnt scared like Gorgutz; who's scared as gak if it looks like he might loose, He likes to start a huge Waaagh! and then tells his subordinates to mop up the rest while he goes off to start another Waaagh!

And Im sure their are just as notable short comings in the Tau, Eldar, and Chaos Marine codex's.

The ork codex works, i just think it needs to have some of the point values messed with on some units, *cough* Ghazkhull is too expensive *cough*, bring back some other characters, maybe add some perks to running certain clans, but all together only minor changes to help them be a bit more competitive or else it will change the codex too much.

Emerett wrote:Chaos.

I know right? they nearly as horrible a scourge on the imperium as the tyainids. if you follow the time line of event in 40k the Imperium of Man has its back against the wall and all the xeno races are busting down their door at every turn, so why aren't they more powerful? just a thought.

I think the Imperial Guard should be allowed their doctrines again; they really let you customise a force.
I mean, considering the fluff, the amount of hardcore Chaos Marines that are taken on by the guard isn't loads; Astartes seem to always do it, so the Guard must have some experience fighting something else, either traitor guard or Xenos.

Considering the age of this thread, and how dated it is, I think we're better off locking and starting a new, more relevant poll, than one polluted by ancient data. Feel free to ask lego to make a new one, that seems to be the norm
