Starting a blog on orcs and orks:
Much like my blog messin' with chaos, I've begun messin' with orcs and orks. I'm actually building a WHFB orc army and building a few different 40k pieces for fun starting with this Nob:

Started painting the Nob, will probably have some pics of him shortly. In the mean time thought I would share some pics of fantasy models that I'm building. The goal with my fantasy army is to make the entire army without a single model repeated, now considering the 2250 pt army is probably anywheres from 130 -160 models it may be kind of interesting.
The prizes I won at last years Chicago GT for my Khorne Demon army will become the backbone of the army (I knew I shouldn't have told Dave Taylor I was going to build orcs next , thanks Dave I blame you). That means lots of black orcs.
First up:
I've found the new Nob heads work nicely. Starting off slowly, to get the hang of the figures, simple head swap added a few little details.
Next up a bit more detail, playing around with a few things, definitely want a chaotic feel to them with lots of variety in armor and such, need big spikes, and more dead body parts, scraps of armor here and there. I doubt I'll use much plasti-card plating as GS and BS is easier to work with at this scale.
And more of just changing some things around, trying to use many cool parts, and again adding many details. I'll be intermixing snots and goblins and grots throughout the army as I go.
Gotta have glyphs:

Small update this time. I'm looking to do a lot of carnage with these guys. So consequently you're going to be seeing lots of body parts strewn about. Big plans, Big plans. That means heads and other things will be showing up all over the place, I've done plenty of skulls with the Khorne Demons, time to do decapitations I guess.
I've also started a few of the fight scene squabbles for the back ranks of normal boyz, gotta have those. Obtained some more Nobs, plan to fantasize them, for the more powerful boyz. Been working on the army list a bit also, but it doesn't really matter much, because they'll probably get stomped on by the more powerful books out there, and also due to the fact that I really hate new Nightgoblins, not as much as I hate Elves, but enough that I know they are not what I want for this army. Anyways its turning out to be loads of fun. Probably will take me a century to paint everything, but thats how it goes.

Another small update, not much of any progress to report with my new army, but I have been playing with a few things to distinguish the heads, while doing a whole lot of commission work. The goal with my orc army will be not repeat a single model in the army, this may be just one of the ways to do that. Also obtained a Wyvern.

More of my orcs for my army, I've had some metal nobs in storage for years thought it was about time to do something with them, so he'll be a big bruiser in my upcoming army:
And then I have some of the new plastic generation, I'll be sprinkling in a few of them also.
I'm toying with a bit of carnage on my black orcs, the models are so large its very hard to put things on their 25 mm bases, so maybe putting things on the models themselves will help spruce them up.

Thank you guys for the really kind words. This army is going to take awhile to build. I've already scrapped my boar riders, to work with the new ones coming out soon. Probably by the time I get to the goblins, there will be new ones of those also. Going definetly have fun with this. I've decided not to use the new trolls, while cool looking models, they just don't work for me. I'm going to go with a Reaper Miniatures model for my Troll, and basically just run one in the army, sort of like a spawn model.
Yea my Messing with Chaos blog here on dakka is alot of fun also, a lot of the building stuff shown on it is commission work, the painted stuff on the other hand is all mine. For me orcs and chaos (and space marines) are the most fun in both 40k and Fantasy. Others can have Eldar, Tau, Elves, and Dwarves, I'm not into them. Lately I've been painting historicals, namely Imperial Romans. Maybe I'll blog Warhammer Ancients, as I gear up for 2.0.

Dude great green stuff work. I wanted to do this with black orcs for a very long time. After consideration i decided not to. You did a great job. Using these as nobz in a conversion is very tough, considering their extensive connection to fantasy. I find this inspiring.
Oh and i must ask, what kind of "brown stuff" do you use?

brush_slip wrote:Oh and i must ask, what kind of "brown stuff" do you use?
No problem. The brown stuff is from the same manufacturer as the GS. I use Kneadatite.
If you are struggling with smoothing out GS, try BS as its less sticky and also sandable. I've also done a bit of a tutorial on making armor plates on my blog and in my "Messing with Chaos" thread.

Been delayed a bit with my orc projects working on other things....mostly chaos related. But I'm getting back at it. I've also taken on a commission to build a bunch of orcs as I build my own army. Slightly running the risk of burning myself out on the models, but diverse themes maybe will help out.
The following are the beginnings of the Orc boy units on commission, they'll differ from my boys in that they will be beating up on Vampire count elements. The first unit of boyz will be doing just that against zombies. I planned to use the 40k Nobs in the front rank because they are the biggest and baddest and would be leading the units. So off we go....
One of the Big 'Uns:
The bannerman and musician:
I think the 40k Ork Warbike faring makes for a neat manner piece.
Ah the beginnings of the first problems in ranking...I'll fix that by assembling everything in various stages and also by raising in elevation some of the models to eliminate or limit conflicts.

Fear not Tobber...
Next up is a stereo-type thing, when you do orcs, I think you must have a bit of animosity. Its over-the-top fun if you ask me, but it makes for good character in the unit and keeps the rank and file interesting especially in the back ranks. This first one is sort of an homage to Victoria.
At the time of building this, I'm relatively new at converting orcs, so lets keep it somewhat simple. For the first fight scene I am just starting to work out the flow of them, to see what works, what doesn't, what joints can be manipulated, etc.
This type of fight scene has been done a lot, but I have always liked it. The next scene I will push it a bit further and that next one will lead into the next and the next and so on.
So the mayhem commences.

Many thanks guys...howabout some more Orcy Punch!
The first fight scene was a bit easy, I need a bit more volume, so I turned it up a couple notches with this one, still not overly loud, but a bit more dynamic. The first one was intended to run across the back rank of the unit. This one is intended to run along the flank in the back two ranks. Its going to be like a cool jigsaw puzzle.
It has a bit more flare.
The white stuff on the bases that I'm using to elevate things is Aves Apoxie Sculp, cures to rock like hardness, works good for this type of stuff as it takes to being drilled and pinned very well.
Still not sure I like the flail, but its different.

A couple more of the boys, nothing really special, just building up the rank and file and making sure each one is just a bit different....
Using GF9 bases for these things, most of the time they are pretty decent, but this batch they must of used dull blades on or something, as the cuts were not clean and took a bit of xacto work to clean them up.

Looks awesome as always!!
Any reason for the GF9 bases over GW?
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
Yea, that is what the commissioner wanted. Not uncommon. I use them for my all ranked metal models in Ancients. They work very well and the magnetized base sticks very well to a magnetized movement tray. Many people will just pack them and travel with the models already ranked up and ready for wargaming. GW bases you need the right size rare earth magnet glued to the base, I've seen quite often where over time the glue does not hold to the base and suddenly you have a loose mini.
15358
Post by: Vitruvian XVII
Aaaah ok, didnt realise they were magnetised.

Post by: PsychosisPC
No problem.
Next fight scene, doubles as a filler piece also. 4 boyz and a zombie on a 50mm
The goal with these units were to beat up on the undead. Well we have a boy ready to throw at you.
Now you may say how do you paint that? Well I made it so that models are just pinned to the base and removable for painting as separate pieces.
And this guy is another homage to Victoria, he is the "Oh boy" orc.

Well here is the wrap up of the first orc boy unit. I and the client are happy with how they turned out. I based the models on Gale Force 9 magnetic bases. Its not the first time I’ve used them, but I have noticed sometimes you get a batch that just are not real clean on the cut edges, so I needed to get an Xacto out and shave them a bit.
You will also notice that I used Aves Apoxie sculp on the bases, that’s the white stuff that you see on the GF9 bases. I did this for areas where the models needed a slight repositioning in height to offset model conflicts or needed some special way of supporting the model itself.
When you do modeling with a lot of crazy conversions, you will sometimes need to do this just to eliminate conflicts in the rank and file.
I built the custom movement tray out of plasti-card. I used the apoxie sculp to around the outsides to get that nice flowing transition up to the bases. Typically I make the edges wider than say what GW does with their trays for a couple of reasons:
1. Eye-candy: It makes it very easy to add subtle little details off on the edges of the tray to add to the overall appearance of the models.
2. Protection: I have crazy poses or sometimes the models hang way out over the edges of small trays like the GW or GF9 trays. When you spend hours detailing your miniatures, the last thing you want is a player that has old metal models being slammed into your models on the gaming table chipping off paint, or worse yet potentially damaging some fragile detail. It is not that people mean to do it, it just happens, so this is just another step that I do help protect things.
I also lined the interior of the movement tray with the GF9 magnetic sheet that is backed with an adhesive. You will note on the back side of the movement tray I left it open. I’ve been doing that recently for most of my stuff, so that if I add characters displacing regular models, or want to add a few models to the unit they can basically ride along on the back of the tray. Another thing I do is make the interior of the tray, just a bit larger allowing for a slightly looser packing of the bases, normally not much more that 2-3 mm.
Playing off of the boyz beating on Vampire Counts, I carried the theme throughout with this unit against zombies. The next unit will be beating on the poor old skeletons. The biggest and hardest boyz get put in the front, because dey’s da best. With all of the craziness going on with the poses it’s a good idea to mark down in some form of code, how and where they are to be placed within the unit, so that the jigsaw puzzle is easier to put together. To do this I simply use a Paint Marker on the bottom of the base to write down the code.
So there you have it, Orc Boyz unit #1.

The model is simply based off of a normal orc boy model.
I had an older bare foot orc model that I mutilated awhile ago, so the feet I thought were suitable for this model. I also wanted to give him a hood and several pouches.
The troll skull is from skull pass. Added a cauldron.
Wasn't sure if I could pull off the hands or not, the one holding the skull came out okay, but in hindsight I should have spread the fingers apart. Will have to do that next time. Its only the the 4th or 5th time I have attempted to sculpt hands or fingers, so I'm a bit new at that.

Well here we go, on to the building of unit #2. Like the previous unit this one will feature the big boys up front and this time I will be modeling them to brutalize skeletons.
Again the goal here is not to repeat a single model. As I was going through the first unit, and even though I'm mixing 40k boyz, the thing I've noticed is just the scarcity of heads and weapons. So to change that up a bit, I'm changing the heads. I'm also going to use a bit more fur.
Here is one of the up front big boys, we don't use those weenie drums other units use. We use the big stuff. I also changed up the gun holster a bit. I think that worked well. Need to put that in the memory bank for when I do my stuff.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
That holster worked well, have to remember that. Good job on the arm-sculpt too.

Post by: PsychosisPC
More of the big boys for the VC orc boy unit #2.
Another front line Nob. Borrowed a head from the black orcs. Doesn't show up well in this angle but the plasti-card plate has a sculpted fist on it.
The axe is from the new plastic Minotaurs. There are some really cool weapons in that box, even though the minotaurs themselves are not the best looking model. Shield from the chariot kit.
And the standard bearer. I used the ogre banner, and added the skeletal'd zombie. Again continuing the theme of taking it to the VC. The orc really isn't all that special, but I did convert a little of him also.
This is another of the big bruisers for Orc Boyz unit #2. I like this Nob.
Not sure the mail coif turned out how I envisioned, but its different. Zombie trophy head fits in nicely with the theme. I'm happy with the look on the shield, although chaos beastmen, I think it works out very well.

Wow! I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread yet. Those conversions are fantastic and the level of detail to each model is quite impressive. Things like the kill marks on the axe really accentuate the character in the models. I love the shaman. Where did the backpack on the drummer come from, if you don't mind? The beastman shield works. I have been looking at those for a while now, all the teeth and horns are perfect for orks. I think the chainmail is boss. *edit* Just looked throw the first two pages... and I have happened across this thread before! So, I am ashamed to have fallen behind. The first unit is so much eye candy! I don't think I can get over it. All of your models, really. I think I'll have to turn up the animosity on the next unit of the squig cult. That unit is just too much, Psycho. I am inspired! Also, where did you get those GS skillz?! Even the little pouches look amazing.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
Yea some ideas on the warbosses, just got to get there.
The backpack on the drummer is from the 40k Nob kit. And the GS skills are years of practice.
Glad you guys like them, I'm making some progress on things.
Hey an orc playing wack-a-mole...
I thought an orc making a nice 2-handed clubbin' action was pretty cool...and it further advances the theme of this unit battling skeletons.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
Next up to continue the in-fighting and skeleton VC theme, I decided to mix everything into one scene.
Next time I did this type of thing, I'll fix the feet on the one about to get body slammed. The white stuff on the slammee is just poster putty to hold the arm temporarily in place, some of the poses get a bit difficult to paint.
Also gave the slammee a nice gash on the noggin'. So often it is easier to not do final assembly, just partial then paint some components separately and assemble after paint.
For instance the head on this piece is also just tacked on with poster putty, its a bit hard to get to. Nice poses are great, but if you can't paint them they are not so great.
And the poor VC dude is already been broken in half.
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Brilliant posing there Psychosis, the feet on the slamee may not be perfect but it in no way detracts from the scene. Always inspiring to see what you've come up with.

Continuing More of the Orc VC killers, Unit #2, rank and filers. This one with a wee bit of stitching, battle wounded. Just a scratch.
Another beastmen shield with a orcy icon. I'm really liking the beastmen shields for these orcs, probably even better use than with the beastmen themselves.
To again continue the theme of Unit #2 and its disgust with skeletons. If you don't have a hand weapon use a skeleton to batter 'dem ta death. I also do like the addition of the nasal piece on the helmet.
A bit of armor platiing and mail always help too.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
I kind of like the conical helmets, but afterwhile they are repetitative. Decided to change these up with a bits of mail. Same with the cleaver weapon, love it but can an only use is so much.
I'm also liking mail all over and decided to do some drapings of skin or cloth depends how you paint it on the shield.
Ah....look what I found, bashin' time. That's an eye patch on him also.
More of the Unit #2 scenery and story. This using the wounded orc from the Empire box set.
The one standing over him is one of my favorite orcs of the unit.
Another of the wounded, adds a bit of storytelling to the unit...
This the pair that will be standing next to him
A couple of plain regular dudes.
That's it....next is the building of the movement tray and assembling the mess.

Post by: monkeytroll
Sweet looking stuff as usual Like the chainmail 'veil', as you say, breaks things up a bit.

Post by: PsychosisPC
Thanks man.
The whole theme of this second VC Orc unit was beating on skeletons and also to be just as rowdy in appearance as the first unit was.
I worked in some skeleton pieces into the custom made movement trays. I usually make my trays a little larger to make them in to some eye-candy, convey the theme, or add to the carnage, in this case all of the above.
Avoiding that uniformity. I love the chaos. Portray more of a wild nature.
The other side. Note the orc in the back rank has taken a spear to the chest. The little snot, clubbing the downed skeleton.
Some birds-eye shots.
There you go that is VC Bashin' Orc Unit #2. Hope you enjoyed them. Now I need to get back to Romans.

Orc Shamen #2, this is to go with those VC Orc boys. Why bother with the metal ones when you can have more fun building one out of plastic pieces and a typical rank and file plastic orc boy and your bits box.
The staff as you can tell by the glyph was once an orc boy spear, I added an overlay of GS and did the wood grain sculpting. I warped the ghoul heads into the staff also. Topped it off with a bit from the beastmen or skaven, can't remember which.
As you can see I gave him a pouch full of bones and other trinkets.
I think the tatter of bottom of the robe could have been better, and I maybe should have removed a tooth or two, but I am happy with the conversion.

I've been wanting to work with these new boars since I saw them come out. They are very dynamic in pose, much better than the old ones and much better than the current Warboss Kit. I've heard some complaining about the snouts and stuff, but having seen real wild boars in the wild, I understand the design, they don't look like domestic pigs like the plastic boar boss kit.
This is the boss for the two VC Orc boy units.
Covering the joins of the legs to the blorc body with armor plates and mail. I decided to add a bunch of glyphs as you see on the model's helmet, elbow, sword, and shoulder.
To continue the whole battling of the undead them, I put a broken tombstone on the base. This I will use again with the Wolf Riders.
I do like how the armor plating looks on the boar's head. I'm definitely planning to do some more of that.

Next up for the VC Orc Bashing Boys is a unit of Spider Riders. To continue the theme, I decided to go back to the skeleton/tombstone idea once again. I was dreading these models, to begin with. The riders are a converter's nightmare, one piece, super-tiny highly detailed models. Not what I call fun to work with. The spiders are fine, they are fun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/Psy...20WIP/048-1.jpg
The VC element on the base and movement tray works.
The goblins are just stuck temporarily to the spiders with poster putty.
My favorite theme element is the skeleton wound up in the web.
What to do with the riders, as you see above, I just decided to enhance the detail with some more feathers, and some fur. The arms essentially are just cylinders so repositioning the spear arms is easy enough, but not necessary.
I think when I revisit the spider riders with my army, I'm going to use the current multi-piece goblins. Don't like the riders, the spiders are great, riders no so much.

So it IS possible to make those spider riders look good. It just takes time and a fantastic modeller like yourself! Very inspirational work, I shall keep an eye on this thread

Nice spider work. Looking forward to what you do with the riders.

Arachnids looking good (not something I expected to hear me say), shame those riders are one piece I'd been thinking of grabbing a couple to add to my servo-grots.

Onto the VC Bashing Orcs Army and the wolf riders. I really had a bunch of fun with these guys. Even the wolves are old you can change the around. And the multi-piece goblins are so much more fun modeling and converting than the spider rider goblins.
I spent a bunch of time converting the riders. Again the theme was to be bashing skeletons, well they are goblins so they don't do as much bashing, but I did continue the theme throughout the unit.
I also wanted to fix the spears, make them a bit meaner looking, they are getting a bit old looking.
Added a bunch of icons, and the guy I was building these for wanted them armed with all of the options.

Wow. That this whole thread is the best O & G modeling I have ever seen.

Hey Psychosis, I have a question to ask, if I may?
I was wondering how you sculpted the chainmail, and the cloth? Any attempts I've done seem to end up looks sub par.

As to the mail, the picture below shows the various tools I use, #4 the ball stylus is what I use for the mail:
The mail is done in a series of rows, pushing all the same direction, get to the end push the other way. So you start with a indented circle, then you push the edge of the next circle into the other.
ie.
The start will be a simple: o
ie.
Then you will do this:
0)))))))))))))))))) --->(direction of the push)
((((((((((((((((((0<----
When you get to the end which is typically the edge of your backing piece, push in the outside edge of the "0".
On cloth pieces I, I roll out a small piece of GS, flatten it on a piece of plastic film (lot of times is use the plastic wrapper the comes with the GS), smooth it out with tool #1, cut it too shape, let it cure a few minutes, pick up by the film and gently apply it to the miniature. I use tools 2, 5, 6, and a to put in the folds, but you can also does this by manipulating the edges as it cures to make it curl and wave.

And now we have the VC Bashin' Black Orcs...
A unit of 21 that includes the BSB in the middle next to the Champ with the huge axe and head from the blorc banner. I trimmed up the head quite a bit to make it fit.
Mostly concentrated my conversions on using bits, doing weapon swaps, and adding glyphs.
In these units, I do like turning the models in the unit flanks to the outside to sort of give more eye candy to the viewers.
I also added a bunch of capes and fur.
The BSB's banner I heavily converted, no pic at this point, but it will be appropriately obnoxious in size.

Here are some of the individual shots of the blorcs. There are so few heads for the blorcs that when you want to make each one somewhat unique, you have to come up with ways to do that. The one on the left I'm calling Batorc, the one on the right had a riveted strip down the center so I removed that.
The shear size of them does make it difficult to do things with them. So again I resorted to adding things to make them look more mean. I have a bunch of extra Goblin spears so they make good spikes. Also note that I did horn swaps on the heads too.
Below you see the back of the BSB. I have a specially converted banner for that guy. The cape you see is made out of ProCreate putty. I have been trying it a bit and just cannot get it to work real well for me. Also the neutral gray is very hard for me to see when working with it. It does smooth out well for the cape.
There is also a bit of plastic sprue welded to the miniature on the underside of the cape to help give it a hump between the shoulders.
More glyphs. The one on the right is the unit champion. The Head is from the one black orc banner. You can note that the jaw line was trimmed down considerably.
Back side of them. Since they have so much plate armor and mail, I decided to put some fur on them to break that up a bit.
Ogre bitz also work with these guys. A bit of touch is required on the one on the right. But that pose uses the banner arm.

Been awhile, but an update: The Fwamin' Eadz Nob
I converted up this Nob, created the back pole icon out of plasti-card, sculpted the skull and flames on the shoulder and the flames above the eye. The axe is also a conversion. And I finally got around to finishing the paintwork.
Stitched wound was carved into the plastic and then sculpted the stitches. Added a Tau head, dislike those little bastards. I really like how the skin tone turned out and how the browns turned out.
The base is one of Dragon Forge's resin castings. They are very good looking basings and the castings are good. Love the buried trench works.
