I must admit overall I'm quite impressed with this product, do we know exactly how much it is and what tax you will have to pay to receive it in the UK.

As I am feeling this is putting many people, like myself from potentially buying this that live in the UK.

You missed it. Not a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT sort of thing, but he did drop into one of his threads and mentioned it.

It is ONLY for the pre-cut troop sizes though in the 1 inch foam.. still a heck of a deal for Sabol owners like myself. I had a friend grab me some of them at GenCon..

ALSO should be mentioned that you save slightly on these if you buy 5 at a time.. a bundle of 5 is 49 bucks, and has free shipping.

Thanks, porkuslime. I missed the bit about free shipping, that does make it a good deal. I have been on the fence for quite a while regarding making the leap; that's a lot of cash to come off of for a carryall. Worht the money, no doubt, but a big single purchase for the likes of lil ol me.

nurgleboy77 - oh well, I guess you'll just be jamming those great models and game pieces inside the box all smashed together. Also, considering the custom work and time that goes into the upper tray, $25.00 is a steal. Hope your models stay safe without the protective foam.

For everyone else, please look on the site Wednesday morning to order these trays. They will be posted then.

Price is fine IMO Romeo,

What kills it for me is your international shipping rate

Do you have a UK distributor?

NEW BATTLE FOAM Space Hulk Trays @ 2009/09/01 08:45:07

Post by: Battle Foam

Sorry, but we do all distro with US, Canadian, and our own in house people. We are working on Europe as a whole as soon as possible. Best suggestion is to get together with a group of friends and buy items together. Shipping gets cut back that way and you all benefit. Just an idea. Hope that helps.

Thanks

Great idea. 3 things kill it for me:

1. It's going to be a long time before I get around to painting the models. And by then I'll likely be all played out of the game. So having a nice safe environment to carry my models around isn't a huge priority at the minute.

2. I live in the UK and the international shipping is unaffordable for me, given that priority.

3. I am a little disappointed in the bottom tray. I haven't seen the components myself yet, so I don't know if its possible, but I would have liked a few more compartments that simply 2 for all the non-miniatures gubbins.

Just my 2p, but still a great idea for my US colleagues!

Select an item roughly the same and go to the check out.

Then cry when you realise that the postage is probably more than the item cost.

Romeo, I would recommend talking to Esdevium Games about UK distribution -- they're very pleasant and easy to work with (I've dealt with them both from the perspective of retailer, and of games publisher, over the years, and they were a joy to deal with on both occasions).

Put me down as another vote for "I will happily buy these once shipping doesn't cost more than the product". In fact, I'd say that about a lot of the Battle Foam line...

Roughly £35 for one set plus postage to the UK.

And there's a chance of being charged import duties on top.

Also on the band wagon here, battlefoam is awesome but uk shipping is just too expensive to make it viable at the moment. (not just this product, all battlefoam really)

$25 for the trays
$29 for the postage

$54 = £33.42

The annoying thing is that if we did organise a bulk buy to save on postage, the saving would probably get eaten up by import duties and VAT.

Guy, sorry but we can't help the postage. Blame the crappy post office for killing us on shipping. FedEx and Ups are not any better. My suggestion is to get together with some friends and order a bunch of kits together. This way you all save. Maybe a local store in the UK would like to get in on it. If they order a large box of SH trays then you guys could just go there and pick them up when they arrive. Just some ideas to help with the post.

Not only does it fit the contents but the foam fits inside the Space Hulk BOX!

Question (to you or Romeo):

If I mount all the pieces on 25 or 40mm bases (for the Genestealers and Terminators respectively), will they still fit in the tray?

As already pointed out there is only one rate for 'not north America' which is a little daft.

Post by: Battle Foam

Hi Guys,

On the shipping topic. We can not do anything about the shipping fellas. We get charged what we get charged by your country you live in. We have no control over USPS, UPS, or FedEx rates. We charge nothing for boxes, tape or any other shipping supplies. We charge nothing for man power to pack the foam up. We only charge what we are asked to by the shipping service we use.

To give you guys any idea, Forgeworld just charged me $33.00 us for $200.00 of small resin parts. I bet you everything I ordered comes in a box no larger then a small hand watch. I don't really think it will cost FW $33.00 for shipping, but they still get their money. So US customers have it just as bad as you guys do in the UK with US products.

My only suggestion is to move closer. LOL. That or start talking up Battle Foam in your local stores. Maybe that way we can get one of your UK distro house to call us and get things going. We are waiting on them. We have already tried calling all the ones we know of with no reply.

On the subject of Space Hulk. Yes, their will be an instruction page inside the box with the foam showing you what place each model goes to.

Hope that helps.

Hmm.... well that strengthens my reservations to outright refusal. Really, I was looking for some reason or advantage to buying the set, not a reason to not buy the set. Which is what I got with your smarmy attitude.

Guess I'll just have to buy a $4 plastic tacklebox tray like I do all my other minis.

First i wanted to say that i've been coming to this forum for a long time and this is my first post. now the price of the battle foam issue. it would take 4 sabol trays of pick and pluck, which they charge the same price regardless of height, to fill the box. the sabol trays coat 9$ a tray so that would be 36$ for pick and pluck. so for 25$ you get 1 large custom tray and another that holds everything else. so can any one say that is a rip off. as for shipping welcome to living across the pound of the product yo want. thank's

Nurgleboy77 - lets be honest, you never would of bought anything from Battle Foam anyway. No matter what I posted you would have had something derogatory to say. Hey, Battle Foam is not for everyone, and we never try to push anything down anyones throat. Please don't try to make it seem like we don't work our butts off helping our customers. not much they can do about it, unfortunately. on ebay auction (up until 6 months ago) you could get shipping via ship (no pun intended) that took 2 weeks but was cheaper from the US to europe; now you can't and the price has gone WAY up. i just tried shipping to canada a few days ago and had to ask the winner of my auction to pay more for shipping or get a refund. for the past 10 years of selling my gaming left overs on ebay, shipping to canada has never cost more than 20% more than 1st class within the US. they recently got rid of surface shipping across the border so everything has to go the equivalent of priority and that costs around 3x what the domestic shipping costs.

NEW BATTLE FOAM Space Hulk Trays @ 2009/09/07 01:53:56

Post by: Battle Foam

Thank you Warboss, I just don't understand why people think we set our shipping prices. We go directly from the USPS, UPS, and FedEx. All we do is pick the carrier that is shipping to your address the cheapest.

Take Space Hulk for an example. It costs us $8.25 on average to ship that size box to anywhere in the US. We charge $7.00 for shipping. That means that we actually pay $1.25 of your shipping costs just to help out. That does not include the box (another $.90 cents), and man power to ship it (most of our employees make at least $9.00 per hour.

So when it all comes down to it, you need to blame your shipping service. We do everything we can to help, but some things are out of our hands.

So far from what i've seen from battlefoam i love the company. I've ordered several SD and GW style trays from there and was always happy with the product.I'm really getting anxious to see how awesome the PACK 1520 custom loadout i ordered 6 weeks ago will be.

But for this I wish there was a way to only order the top "model" tray, i really have no interest in a tray for just the cardboard tiles and tokens but meh w/e. I'll still most likely order one once i paint my SH set (using my friends unpainted one in the meantime)

I'm buying these trays as both storage for my game, and kind of a test run to see if the trays are of a higher quality that I might spend this much money to house my 3 (and soon 4) Warmachine armies and very large Ork army.

Sadly, no warmachine/hordes specific trays yet.

@ Diablo, I cant speak for others here but I understand that UPS or FEDex or whoever you use sets your shipping prices, but in my case at least the price they set is prohibitively expensive, I mean for the SHulk foam the cost of shipping is nearly the same as the cost of the foam, which I really cannot justify to myself, i'm sure this is also how others feel. (still a great product though). If its still available around xmas time i'm in florida for two weeks so I might pick up one then... we'll see (can they ship to hotels?)

I got a set of these trays for my Space Hulk game the other day and I have to say I was fairly disappointed. The quality of the foam is nice, as is to be expected, but the fit is not so good. First the sorta good news, the top tray that stores the figures does hold everything, but it is a little bit of work to figure out the right angles and locations for each figure to go in. Using an online picture with all the figures in the tray is a great help with this. Now the bottom tray unfortunately does not hold everything. If you spent a lot of time trying to figure out the optimal placement of all the pieces, it will just barely be too high to quite close, if you leave out the rule books and the large status board. With everything, there is absolutely no way to get it all in the original box and have it close normally. I ended up leaving out the bottom tray and just laying the troop tray on top. This works ok and it is possible to then close the box (barely). I confirmed my findings with 2 other people who have had the same problems.

The other really annoying thing that happened with my bottom tray is that some of the glue used to hold the foam together was stretched across the bottom of the tray in a few spots. I didn't think much of it, as I figured it must be dried. I put my tiles in the bottom tray (before I figured out the bottom tray is not usable) and the glue instantly bonded to the bottom of some of my tiles. Attempts to get it it off by rubbing failed. Perhaps goo gone can help me, but the glue seemed pretty determined.

Ah, that's not so good news...I was kinda hoping everything would actually fit, it was the main reason why I loved the idea of the trays so much: being able to use the actual box everything came in while giving them added protection.

RangerRobAZ - I must say that your situation is a bit odd. By your user id I would say your a local here in Arizona. As you know our shop is right down the street from Empire Games. I would be more then happy to show you how all the pieces fit just fine inside the foam. Mind you that we only have so much room since the box is already pre set by GW. I have yet to have a problem fitting in all the tiles and my upper foam.

A bit of practice loading the lower section should fix your problem. If you would like I can email you pictures of the items all fitting just fine inside the foam. Per GW IP rules we can not post these images on our site. So we include a two page instruction print out with each order so you can figure out the best placement without problems. You'll also find that in our hand out that comes with each tray kit has a very detailed picture of the upper section of the foam showing you again the exact placement of each model. I'm hoping you got this two page hand out when you picked up your trays. If you did not we would be more then happy to send another set out or have you come by our shop and pick it up.

As for the glue on the bottom, you can turn that in for a complete replacement. If you are totally unhappy with your order, please feel free to return it to us or your local game store for a full refund. Again, I don't know if you got it from our website or Empire Games, but by your AZ I would assume your a local.

Looking forward to your reply.

For everyone else, please feel free to email us for full color pictures of the bottom tray and upper tray fully loaded with all the model.

After all its a huge game with loads of pieces and it will take a bit of practice to get them to go in their right place.

Hope that helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you RangerRobAZ

That's what I figured, that everything would fit in the bottom but it'd take a bit of practice getting it just right.

Having finally got around to punching out the tiles and assembling my minis last night, my previous reservations are gone, and as I am in love with the models, I am insanely in need of the foam trays to protect them.

However, as has been said before the shipping to the UK makes this undoable for me. Which means my models will likely remain unpainted as I see no point in painting them up only to have them rattle around the box, or be stored in some other container.

I accept that BF are only passing on the costs they are charged themselves. I have had experience of the cost of shipping from the US to the UK before (which is, for some reason often around twice the cost of shipping in the other direction - those of us who get irritated by the Royal Mail should bear this in mind!). I totally accept (and always did) that BF don't gouge their shipping costs. UPS and the US Mail are much more expensive than their European counterparts.

As BF have contacted UK distributors with no apparent success, maybe it behooves those of us who would like to purchase the stuff over here to contact the distributors as a group and request they get their act together.

Or is there a UK-based retailer that might be able to go it alone and get the stuff direct from BF?

Anyone got the urge to try and gee up a UK (or even European) distributor and indicate the kind of business they could do servicing UK hobbyists?

In fact, to show willing I'll set the ball rolling by emailing Maelstrom and showing them this thread.

Well,

This is the email I just sent:

"Hi guys,

There has been some recent irritation amongst us UK-based gamers only being able to get hold of Battlefoam direct from the US - which involves massive shipping charges.

What we need is a UK supplier who can bulk order and make the shipping thing much more efficient.

An illustration of the strength and depth of feeling on this issue can be found in this thread in Dakka:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/254349.page#960792

Can I humbly suggest that becoming the UK (or even European) supplier for Battlefoam may be a great addition to your portfolio of products. Looks like they may even be up for an exclusive deal if you are interested as they seem to have had no support from UK retailers hitherto.

Here's hoping!

Cheers
Paul"

As others already stated, I totally understand is not Battlefoam fault the shipping is so high... yet I also hope you understand at Battlefoam that for a client in Europe like myself the Product plus the shipping has to be paid and If the bill is to high we just dont buy at all... Lets not forget that theres even the chance this will be picked at customs and then you can get extra percentage accumulation to the final bill...

A european distributor would do miracles over here since I'm a big fan of your products... yet not filty ritch

I got my battlefoam today. I wouldn't say I "regret" my purchase, per se, but if I could do it over again I do not think I would do so.

The quality of the trays is quite good. The top tray especially works out really well for the minis. I like it a lot.

The bottom tray... eh. They claim everything fits OK, but I think that you're either using a pretty relaxed interpretation of the word "fit" or using some scheme to fit everything in their just so, which is way, way more complicated then it's worth. Either way, the instructions and such don't fit and are going on top.

After getting and using this product, I think a better item would be just selling the top tray for the minis and just putting the board pieces in the bottom loose. Since there are not custom slots for each piece, obviously, you're not losing any protection by doing so, IMO.

Hello everyone,

I must say, for all of us being such good hobbiests we are all having a bear of a time fitting those silly game pieces. So, we have heard your emails and we are now offering just the top foam tray for those who would like to leave their game pieces and smaller bits in the bottom of the box.

The top troop tray can be found on our site under popular space corridor foam kit.

Here is a direct link.

http://battlefoam.com/catalog.php?item=226&catid=66&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D66

We obviously lowered the price on the single tray to $15.00 since its only one tray. Before you guys say why is it not half off, its because its a whole lot more foam then the tray below. We have a higher cost on the troop tray then on the extra game pieces tray.

Anyway, for the guys that ordered the set, it does all fit. I will do a video for everyone to see that it does fit. It takes a bit of practice but once you do it you'll always fit things.

Thank GW for the box size. We really did our best to make trays with what we had.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Romeo

Yay for companies listening to the ideas and views of the consumer!!!

On a side note how long does getting a PACK 1520 custom load out list of models provided usually take? I'm a week 6 now and was just curious. I realize it must take several weeks to design and create custom foam trays, i was just curious on a time frame.

Hi Red_Lives,

We normally do not take more then 4 weeks with even the most complicated designs. Space Hulk has pushed us back a bit, but not this long.

Please call us and ask for me (Romeo) I will be more then happy to look into this for you. Maybe we had a problem along the way. Give me a call as soon as possible and I will personally take care of your order.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

A video showing an ideal packing solution for Space Hulk would be most welcome. Frankly, it's a very close run thing trying to repackage the box without the foam trays even after punching out all the die cut cardboard pieces and dispensing with the frames. Thanks.

Since they will now be selling just the top trays, I'd strongly recommend this product. If you're going to paint your pieces it's nearly a must have.

To be honest, even if you are not going to paint your models, I think its essential. There's that much fragile bling on the Marine models in particular, that I fear they'd get damaged rattling around with all that heavy cardboard.

Now, I wonder what the overseas shipping is for the single tray!?

Yeah, kind of. Unless you're totally new here (which you aren't) you probably heard that Romeo and BattleFoam have great customer service and go way out of their way for their customers. Not only that, but he's here, answering our questions and listening to our suggestions. Was his answer kind of smarmy, yeah, I'd expect that he probably has better things to do than be overly nice to a forum poster who thinks that his $25 tray is too expensive.

Oh and $25 for trays to hold 30 large, awkward miniatures and all the components is a really good deal (not to mention that this is being made for a limited release product)!

My order of both trays arrived yesterday. I too was dissapointed that even after packing, re-packing, and re-packing again, all the components wouldn't fit snugly in the box, and stil allow the lid to close. I'm very happy with the mini tray though. I will say that the picture of a packed box is a blurry black and white photocopy...I couldn't see a thing! If I had to do it al over again, I'd just order the troop tray.

Totally agree on the postage issues,
Not Romeo's fault.

I suppose that I mention it because I feel bad for not buying such an awesome product!!

I also have no idea why all the Aussie flags have become US flags (I am a US citizen, but live in the great southland but that is not here nor there really).

So...
There is no sea freight anymore out of the US? That really messes my plans for shipping!!

I've sold a decent amount of stuff to Europeans on eBay, and I'd like to confirm, for fairness' sake, that there is absolutely nothing, zilch, zero, that Romeo can do about his shipping rates if he wants stuff to get to you reasonably quickly.

This isn't brain surgery. Get a cardboard box, put some stuff in it, weigh it, and take the measurements.

Then go here:

http://www.usps.com/

"Calcultate International Postage," middle choice of three towards the bottom. Take a look for yourself. The rates are the rates. $26.50 for a 1 lb. package from here to Great Britain or Ireland.

Expensive? Yes. Unavoidable? Yes.

In terms of the bottom piece of foam, I wouldn't go for that personally, as I'm not too worried about protecting the counters or the pieces. They're pretty sturdy, and I would probably just toss my Space Hulk models unpainted into other foam that's not fitted for SH but who cares, they're not painted.

I would be curious to know whether or not if you eschewed the bottom foam tray, just put your counters and stuff in the box, would you be able to fit the top tray with the models on top of the rest of it and still get the box closed?

I got mine last week (top & bottom foam), and I must say I am very satisfied with the product.

I put everything together in the bottom half long before the video was published and had no problems (even with all my bits in baggies). All told, the foam sticks out 1/2"-1" over the top of the box(and I could likely eliminate that if I followed the video's advice for placement instead of eyeballing it). This bit of overhang is not at all an issue for me, as the lid still fits snugly (and especially considering that when GW shipped it, some of my board sections were damage because of how tightly the game was packed in!)

My only issue was, as another poster mentioned, some of the glue on the bottom section ran over a bit into the storage area, but a thin strip of fabric solved that problem.

Overall, a solid product that I am confident will protect my game for years to come. This was the first product I've purchased from Battlefoam and it's unlikely to be the last. Thank you, Romeo!

Hey Romeo -

Just wanted to say that I never did end up ordering a custom layout from you (we've chatted on the forums in the past) - instead I found a local distributor! Happy to say that Connection Games in Vancouver BC carries your product (although they do typically have to take orders rather than have on hand).

Managed to cram all of my Skorne models into 2x 2" and one 3" tray and still have lots of space for new models.

Been using the case since beginning of August with no issues.

Thanks.

Well, I just got mine today. Overall I'm satisfied, though the cardboard pieces will only go in the bottom tray in a very specific way. I wasn't too bothered by the lid not closing all the way (only about a quarter of an inch), but there's a single genestealer claw sticking up out of the top tray just a little bit (the one that's running down a curved wall section), and I don't feel comfortable resting the top of the box on top of said tray since I might snap his arm off if I'm not careful.

I'll have to watch Romeo's video again to figure out how to place everything in there, though I was kinda hoping I could still use the baggies but it's not looking like I can. There's always rubber bands though.

Anyway, if all you want is the top tray then I'd say it's definitely worth a buy. I imagine it'd fit in the box just fine if you don't care about the cardboard sections and just have them all strewn about in the bottom, which is probably likely since I've seen a lot of people comment about how a protective foam tray for cardboard is silly (I don't really think so since it's $100 cardboard, but that's just me).
