I wandered into a different GW store over the weekend and came across a female blueshirt. Having not seen this in 20 years of frequenting GWs across the UK, it made me wonder whether they have started an equalities recruitment drive to balance out the male dominated workforce
So, start of a trend or just a one off?

They're actually robots designed to sell more GW products to poor defenceless female starved wargamers.

Eh, it could happen more with the economy the way it is. A GW store is probably more willing to hire a woman to try and improve the atmosphere at the store, and with the job market so poor, more women might consider working these temporarily.

Almost every female I've ever worked with in a nerd environment has had the same degree of social under-exposure as many of the males suffer from. I've always been the guy who put half an ounce of effort into caring about his appearance, and being slightly metro in an environment with no other guys of equal caliber gets you lots of nerd-girl attention. I met my current girl of 3 years while I was working at a comic store Honestly though, give them space and treat them like you would anyone else.

Of the 5 comic stores I used to frequent in my youth, 4 had female employees. All the video gamestores in major malls tended to have female salesclerks then too. I don't visit such stores at here since it is cheaper and easier just to order online.

GW staff in the UK currently wear blue polo shirts as staff uniform and are hence referred to as blueshirts. Managers wear black shirts. This varies from country to country, so other posters might refer to redshirts.

The mere fact that the notion of a female staffer has prompted a thread probably explains why there are so few of them!
When a female does venture into a GW (other than a mother clutching a Christmas or Birthday list) the staffers tend to look at them like they are a skinhead at an R'n'B night, then the typical "do you need any help?" gets uttered, which is said in a tone that infers she is probably lost and a little bit simple.
Meanwhile the regulars, most of whom consider soap and social skills to be an alien concept, go through the classic 3 stages of "how to cope in the vicinity of non related females"
1. Stare or leer (think Richie from Bottom or Vic Reeves from Shooting stars) in disbelief, and whisper "oh my god a girl" in not so hushed tones to there mates
2. Begin to talk very, very loudly about their wargaming prowess "AND MY CHAMPION WILL SMITE YOU WITH HIS MIGHTY WEAPON" (I guess this is the nerd equivelant of a mating call)
3. Sidle over and make some sort of embarasing attempt at conversation "so being a girl I guess you like high elves?"
No one likes to be gawked at like some sort of Victorian freak show, or being made to feel like they are stupid or incapable of making choices by themselves.
Before I get flamed for making sweeping generalisations these are all examples of behaviour I have witnessed on a number of occaisions when in a GW store or when my girlfriend has come into the store to meet me. Thank god she finds this sort of treatment amusing!

Pardon me while I pick up my jaw. I seem to have laughed it right off.
I'm a gamer, I'm female, and up until college, I never gamed with guys unless they were the boyfriends of someone in my all-female group. We did tabletop RPGs, with minis, which led to my love of painting.
All of my exes have been gamers, or became so very quickly. My ex-husband and I met through Call of Cthulhu, and when we divorced we split our geekery as fairly as we could (he got the Space Marines and I got the Orks, he got the 360 but I got any the games I wanted). We still get on well, and he's asked me to help him build some drop pods in a few weeks.
So, yes, female gamers do exist. Female wargamers do exist. And we're pretty awesome.

Hmmm, something like a gaming version of a juicy bar might work. Gamers can use the facility to paint their figures, and pay extra for a "hostess" to sit next to them/on their lap/etc. and chat them up about wargaming/encourage them to buy stuff.
Finding talent willing to become knowledgeable enough about minis to hold a decent conversation is the hard part.

The Dark Elf (Eldar for today) hottie on the left is probably my favorite GW female sculpt for a handful of reasons;
1. She is wearing fishnet stockings - and fishnet stockings are hot.
2. She has a bare midriff - and bare midriffs are hot.
3. She has Dark Elf boobies and...well, you get the gist.
Posts like these are probably why there aren't more female gamers in the hobby.

I'm gonna put my balls on the wall here.....and yes, I feel like a rather giddy Luke Skywalker as he back talks the Emporer!....we all know how that ended don't we....Vader lost his life, and Luke can charge light bulbs by licking his fingers and holding the ends!
I read Smart Alex's comments, and I don't see how they fall into an offending catagory! I get the impression that he's making an observation based on his experience of females and what he classes as cool hobbies.....
On the flip side, Memory openly hints at having a (determined!) all female group, and only includes men if they are invited by being a "partner" of one of the members!!! To me, this is openly sexist, and massively against what the whole ethos of wargaming is about! If anyone has played the "sex" card it was Memory, by hinting at an exclusive atmosphere based on gender, rather than character or playing ability!
As an aside, my wife "plays" Capoeira, which she got into based on her own interests....I'd class that as a very cool sport/martial art, her getting into it had nothing to do with me, as I don't do it!! So women can and do involve themselves in cool hobbies and past-times.....to each their own!

Haha, nah, I should have been clearer. My first gaming group was all-female, because the majority of my friends were female, and that's who introduced me to gaming. Being as that was in high school, whenever someone in the group did partner up, we quickly invited them to the games, but there was about a 50/50 shot of them actually joining for any length of time.
Once I got into college, most of my friends were partnered or married, so my gaming groups were pretty evenly split along gender lines.

I figure girls in game stores tend to get the same sort of looks I got in AC Moore when I spent an hour or so trying to figure out of those "Kricut" things in the scrap booking section would cut styrene. Sort of the "He is too ugly to be gay, but why is he here? Is it a trap?" Granted, it might have been the aura of trying to kill the packaging designers with my brain I was giving off, but of the women that did say hi, most were approaching me like an Animal Planet star approaches a wounded leopard.
However guys, there is hope! (Just not in the scrapbooking aisle). There was/is a rather cute redshirt at the Franklin Mills GW who got me in a fair bit of trouble with my then fiance. You see, if you don't get all sweaty and mumbly, she was quite happy to make small talk and mention how much she likes the Witch Hunter's line and ask how your painting is going. Enough so that upon leaving the store, my fiance peppered me with the "Where do you know her from? Why was she talking to you!?" sort of questions. (Though Pro Tip: The correct answer is not "What, afraid I am going to trade you in for a gamer girl with better grammar?")
statement of opinion
As an aside, tact and diction not withstanding, Smart_Alex does have a bit of a point. Memory and crew are a rare and wonderful thing: a girl with full fledged hobbies, and more, hobbies that guys also like. Many women just don't seem to have the obsessive drive that men have when it comes to the concept of hobbies. Those they do have tend to be much less social than even wargaming, such as the various cloth/yarnwork fields and gardening, and tend to be more generalized (i.e. they dabble more.) I suspect that those two tendancies (which are not universal of course) tend to make it seem that women have zero hobbies, as you rarely see them practice them in groups, and they rarely become the type that spends every spare second on them.
In fact, it might be said that many men have hobbies that focus on social aspects, while women socialize as a past time and have hobbies as something to do outside of that.
I could also be completely wrong. I often forget that I am a strange minority in the human family Still, it seems likely that women and men do generally like different sorts of things for different reasons, and those are worth talking about if you want to get your S/O into your war gaming or gardening or something.

Who needs girls in a gamestore when you have a wife who lets you set up your own battle bunker in the basement? :p Honestly I dont see why girls would want to work in a gamestore and prob be hit on, looked at or otherwise annoyed all day by gamers

I lol'd here. I've had the same experience at Michael's Crafts. After a hard days work at the grime pit, you're standing in the craft store going through the chains, clasps and beads looking for the perfect ornate Warhammer doorknob for a bit of terrain as "Crafters" aren't sure why you're in their territory checkin' out "girl stuff".

It's funny,
when my wife walks in a store alone she says it's hilarious as all the boys don't know where to look. Really funny.
Just shows the type of person playing the game in general. But hopefully they grow up (I think I did )
I also had a friend that walked in to buy a present,
Being a ballet dancing model, I don't think that the staff were prepared, hilarity ensued.
I don't think I care whether there are Female staff,
only that they are good staff. But for the other women gamers and Mums etc it would be a good thing.

I remember during the short time I worked for my local GW store as few years ago, one of the girls from Spearmint Rhino came in to buy some stuff for her little brother. That was fun I'm 6'5 tall and she must of been just over 5. Well stacked and wearing a low cut top... sigh

Similar stuff happens to guys as well if in places that are traditionally for women - I get real funny looks when browsing the racks in the Lingerie department at the local M&S (Just trying to find something in the right size for the missus - honest!)
And just try even reading the 'bounty' forums (website about babies and birth) whilst the wife is posting - they really don't like that!

There is a chick that works in the Ottawa store. "You're so nice!"
Honestly, they should just make all of them chicks. Everyone except cool Manager guy and cool red shirt guy at my local store. In fact I think I am going to bring this up with Jervis next time I see him.

**inserts bad joke about lack of females who play wargames**
Wow, this is such an important subject. Because, you know, women don't work in almost every line of business already...

Was it Trigger from Fools and Horses?
And why weren't you charged with assault?

MGS: Because most guys don't want to admit they got hit hard enough by a girl to charge for assault. Either that, or the police operator hung up on him because he couldn't be understood over all the laughter in the background

suppose GW stores are jsut like the COmputer place i work at the ratio must be 95% blokes 5% women and its quite a big place.
Its much better to have girls in the workplace, it sorts out the ying and yang mix. When i have worked in 100% blokey workplaces it ends up being a miserable geek zone where hardly any work gets done.
the thing i dont get is the girlfriend, she watches sci-fi, works in IT and still calls my minis "little soldiers" !

When my wife and I first started dating, I took her along to my FLGS. She handled it better than I expected she would. No obvious 'Gamerisms' (leering/stinking/pointing) until we were walking out, when she went to push the door open (I was carrying a bag of stuff - excuse me).
Another customer was pulling the door open, just as she went to push it. She nearly fell into (clutz) the guy, who immediately retracted his head into his heavy winter coat like some kind of a turtle, and make this odd giggly wheezing noise.
She never wanted to go back.
For some reason she married me six years later, and gets to come spend time at the new GW store with several other GFs who no longer feel as out of place when there are a few of them together.

Actually, my GF and I were talking about this at GD this weekend; none of the female staff from the stores we knew to have them (like Wycombe) seemed to be there, and even the ladies from the 'Eavy Metal team seemed absent. However, the latter might be due to the fact that I don't think they speak great English...
