This is probably going to be a slow blog.
After doing my over the top Renaissance marines that most of you are probably familiar with I decided I wanted to go in the complete opposite direction. I'm doing tons and tons of research on how realistic or military modelers are doing things... and boy have I learned a lot of new techniques and products and ways of doing things and I'm chomping at the bit to get to use them. So I sold my house and my car and my wife left me and I had to put my dog 'duke' down and after all that I had enough money to buy death korps. I wanted to go all out with the theme too so I bought trench resin bases for everything as well. I have tons of IG vehicles and about 55 DKoK. (I'm running vets... it's a money thing!) Now I'm probably going to paint all the bases first as I know the color of dirt for the most part! Where I'm stuck is I don't think I want to do the dark gray/green of the normal DKoK's. I'm debating on green solders with green and dark green tiger striped camo vehicles or tan solders with tan and brown tiger striped camo vehicles. I'm leaning towards tan and brown with rusty metal on everything. I'll buy some of the vraks books and the fw masterclass before deciding for sure.
In this blog I'll document my progress as well as my learn as I go techniques I've been reading about for the past 3 months in preporations for this project.
The gray bases are from Dragonforge and the ivory ones are from Iron halo. Trenchs
Hope this army turns out as well as I plan...

I KNEW there was something i forgot to do when i picked up by DKoK stuff.. now where did those dogs get to... But no, Really, Im looking forward to see what you do with such fantastic minis. Those bases look killer to, even unpainted, I might have to look into some of those too.. though id need to do them like an arctic tundra tench line.. to go along with my off white color of their great coats. Yay for arctic troopers!

I like the idea of an alternate colour scheme, perhaps something like this(well like this green in anycase) :

Life stuff ugh... anywho I've OFFICIALLY started on my Dkok! Sorry its taken this long. I assembled and primed my commander tonight. He will be my test model to figure out the paint scheme for my infantry. I'm waiting for my forge world master class book to see how I would like to do the vehicles. So enjoy and I hope to start posting in this log again consistently.

Hi,
At first, your work is amazing, but ...
- I think this rust effect looks a bit like the enemy, the Vraskian Renegade Militia
- For the color scheme I would suggest the German 'Feldgrau/fieldgrey' (of WWI) or the French 'Azurblau/azure' (also WWI) for a realistic and historical look

@ The Chaos-Kraut: Thanks for the references I was wondering how the hoses and the rubber part of the gas mask that covers the horse’s mouth were suppose to look. I'll definitely draw on that for inspiration. About the rust however, my whole army is going to be weathered to hell and back and as gritty as I can possibly make them while keeping within the realm of realism. I don't think that makes them necessarily renegades... Just lazy at cleaning things.
@ smiling Assassin: I really don't know at this point the bases look good as is. I'm sure I'll have to do something to jazz em up a lil big though. Maybe experiment with some of the realistic mud effects that mig and other companies have. Any suggestions?

After an abundance of painting and modeling ADD one of the large tournaments I attend every year has snuck up on me. Last year I had the honor of winning Best Painted with my renaissance marines. Not wanting to return with the same army I had decided I would return next year with a DKoK army. Well the deadline is fast approaching and so far I've assembled 7 Dkok's and 1 Commissar lord on a horse. (which I can't even field) So now its crunch time. I've assembled one Manticore and one Vendetta for my army coming up. The Manticore is what the worthless whirlwind should be. A limited number of templates of death wrecking havoc on low to mid armored infantry. I'll have enough 1 shot wonder guns in my list for the heavy infantry and vehicles. What I'm lacking is something to deal with 180 boyz or gaunts. The Manticore will fit this goal nicely and if there isn't any light infantry her str 10 ordinance can be thrown at vehicles with decent enough results. The Vendetta is just all around good for 130 points. 3 TL lascannons, fast, transport, cool looking. I have a feeling I'll be adding a couple more of these before I'm done.

Already you have achieved awesome status, great work so far. Since you have yet to paint any troops, I am suggesting that you make their coats a deep red. Although it is an odd color scheme, I have seen it done elsewhere on dakka and to great affect. I imagine an army of red dkok painted to your standard would be a truly striking force.

Getting out of the mud...
I don't know how many of these will make the cut in my final tournament list but I plan on having a total of 8. 6 Vendettas and 2 Valkyries. As its "paint my army for tournament" crunch time I need to narrow down exactly what I want so I'm not painting unnecessary units. I have 2 Vendettas now and 1 Valkyrie assembled and primed in Mr. Hobbies Mr. Surfacer 1000. The best model primer in the world!!! ( IMO) I also have 1 Valkyrie being assembled and am working on purchasing 2 more. Most people convert up their lascannons for their Vendettas. I've seen some killer ones and some that look very natural. Wildeyedjesters Chaos Vendettas are a great example of this. I've already spent so much on 9 forge world tanks and 60 some odd Dkok whats a couple more forge world conversion kits. Now I'm off to the Internetz to look up paint schemes for my mad airborne trench fighters!

Post by: littleboyblues
It's in the detail.
Going with the sky is the limit with my DKoK army I decided to make it as real as my current modeling/painting skill level would allow. I've done a metric ton of internet research on everything from the DKoK's themselves to WW2 to current tanks and soldiers uniforms. I would be lying if I said I wasn't completely stoked about this army. What really has gotten me all worked up is the vehicles. Since my last army (Renaissance marines) I've learned a lot about vehicles and painting. I'm ready to put all this theory into practice. I've constructed up 5 tanks now and I would like to think that each one tells a story. The 4 below will all eventually be hydra flak tanks.
They first hydra is one of my favorites. I put little indention all over the front of the vehicle centering most of the dents around the front hatch. This was to represent the traitor guard shooting a heavy stubber at the front of the tank every time the hatch was opened trying to take out a DKoK that was inside. I also included extra treads in case the tank got immobilized and needed to make field repairs. I also bent the ladder on the other side to show that this tank has been in use. If you've ever walked past construction vehicles you would know that almost everything is bent and well 'used' on treaded workhorses. I included a couple of used gas cans on the back placed casually as if they were thrown to the side after use.
This one is my favorite. I included an auto cannon shot from the traitor guard into the left front track guard. I have DKoK lasguns leaned up on the sand bags on the left of the vehicle. The guardsmen have undoubtedly been fighting off troops to the left side of the vehicle as all the sand bags are piled up on that side with the spare guns laying about by the top hatch. I also included the ammo crate on this one so they wouldn't run out of ammunition fending off the infantry.
This tank I've included lots of shovels on top and some on the side as well as a tow cable on the side. This tank was recently stuck in the mud. The dangers of trench warfare. While stuck the tank and crew were taking some heavy fire to the front of the vehicle. I'm guessing from an Auto cannon heavy weapons team from the damage up front.
This last hydra just came to the front lines. It has no damage yet and hasn't had to drop sand bags off any where yet. Also all the tools are secured in there right spots and all the luggage and baggage are in their rightful place on the side of the vehicle.

Excitement Ensues!
I made a lot of progress over the past week. I had my DKOK's assembled and they are ready to go minus 3 flamers I was short that I'll have to order soon. I finished assembling my 4 Hydra flak tanks. I got one more Valkyrie assembled as well. I'm excited I've ordered the Forgeworld Model Masterclass book and eagerly await it in the mail. I'm more than on schedule for my June deadline. My goal was to get everything assembled by March. I'm well on my way and I look forward to getting my brush wet!
My favorite guy is this one. To me it screams cool. A DKoK veteran jumping out of a trench blasting is melta gun to undoubtedly take out enemy armor.

Bringing home the pain
I've added a very important unit to the guard I'm working on... We'll for apocalypse anyway. I've added a Shadowsword. I'm thinking about naming it 'Legend Slayer'. It says I have to make up a pompous name for it right in the book. I didn't want sponsons on it as I liked the idea of its sole purpose is to hunt titans and get rid of other particularly nasty things. The most fun I've had with this thing in the one game I fielded it was shooting units in cover... Because you get to remove the building or woods or hill or bunker. Pesky things! Who needs terrain anyway?
I only modeled half of this and my friend wanted to jump in and build the other half. And I was more than willing to let him. After basic construction I added all my battle damage and do dads that I've been adding to my tank and its now sitting in black primer. I'm wanting to paint this beast more than I want to paint up my 'fieldable' tanks. Automatically Appended Next Post: Paint Initiated!
I've picked out my paint scheme. I've started airbrushing on the base coats. Right now they look very 'steel legion'. They won't when all is said and done though. I didn't want my stuff to be the normal dark grays of the Dkok's so I picked out a more 'stand outish' color scheme and went with it. The Camo pattern is done with masking tape and codex gray and desert yellow. Now for the weathering the funnest part of the hobby for me. You get to take something meh and smack it with the realistic stick. More updates soon!

Witzkatz ; I agree whole heartedly. I Don't really have a special setting or why my paint scheme is those colors yet. The real life reason is because it aesthetically appealed to me. I plan on making a WW1 style trench board that I and a local IG fanatic are going to make and play on. I've know finished the weathering on the tank and they are in know way light any longer. That was just the airbrushed base colors. Sorry for not having the pictures. I'll get them up as quickly as I can.
Karl Deathwolf ; I have spent a lot on this army but it has been over the coarse of a year and all 6 of my valk/vendettas I won from tournament prizes and I do a lot of commission painting trading for kits. Only thing I was really ever out cold hard cash for were the FW kits.
BLACKHAND; It's done! The only thing I have left is little details treads, sand bags, tools and what not. I'll get pictures posted soon.

Love those models! I have a queston for you, I bought some of the Elysian drop troops years ago when a Games Day came through Atlanta, and they are on a slightly smaller scale than my other 40k models. (40k are on 28mm heroic, Elysians look like true 28mm) Are the DKoK models the same way? Do they look small when lined up next to Cadiens?
13017
Post by: littleboyblues
Gil Gerard ; Yes they are. I personnally love it. A space marine is 9 foot tallish... Then Catachans are the most buff hugest Mo Fo's in the universe according to scale. My other army is Codex Marines so they look right at home being smaller.

CadianXV ; No worries on thread jacking. Good tip I have already started basing the Valks and I went with a Gray more jet than a Helicopters camo.
Lorgar's Herald ; Dresses as the Red Ranger. I now trump your Ninja outfit sir!
Greenkeeper ; The quility of the sculpts are amazing. No I didn't have any horror stories of my stuff being so warped it was unusable. Now saying that keep in mind resin models will pretty much always be more time comsumeing to build than their plastic or metal counterpart.
Everyone else ; Thanks for the kind words!
Weathering and Base Coating
I finished up all the weathering on the base camo on the tanks. This includes the paint chipping in spots and dirt and grime and rain streaks all over the tanks. They still need to be tightened up and brought more into focus but adding all the details and additional blending will do this. So far I'm proud of how they've turned out.
Now that the base Coats are done on the tanks I started airbrushing the base coats of my valks/vendettas. I could have gone with the same paint scheme and added an off white color to the bottom of the planes and it would have looked all right. I ended up going with more of an Imperial Navy look though. My reason for doing so is that some day I want to own about 8 valks/vendettas, 1 vulture gun ship, 1 of the world war 2 looking bombers and a couple of the lightning or thunderbolts and have a full apoc or just for fun only Imperial navy army. This is only a dream right now but I decided to go ahead and paint my vehicles to match my future IN project. This will also add a little variation in my army and break up the gray/desert camo pattern of all the tanks. I went with a gray top and a bone colored bottom.

Post by: Wehrkind
Looks damned sharp man. That weathering really brings down the camo to a nice, subtle level. I thought it was a tad bright at first, but now it looks excellent. Those tanks look like they mean business, and are not troubled by getting dirty in the process. Well done!

DKOK armies are always spectacular, the trench basing is another element that just makes the army all that much better. Have considered doing one myself as I wanted IG as my third army, but my wallet throttled me at just the mere idea.

Wehrkind ; You weren't the only one that was worried that they were too bright and crisp. I'm glad I stuck with it though as I am pleased with how the came out.
Wileythenord ; Chattanooga is a bit too far this year. A lot of life stuff has happened I'm working through. I'm only going to the patriot games and bolscon in the 2010 tourny season. 2011 I plan on makeing a lot more tournaments. I'm familiar with diceheadgames. I got one of the stupidly elusive strike cruisers from one of you.
Greenkeeper ; No problem. I can understand wanting to know more about an expensive product before buying. I hope to start on the troops here soon. I have a tau commission I'm trying to hurry through to pay the rent gods and then I'll be back on the DKoK's.
SONS of ORAR ; Getting a WOW from you made my day. Your stuff is amazing and your too young for it to be that good. I'm familiar with your guard and your marines. Great stuff. Keep up the good work and good luck with you exams.
Bash the Bosh ; Whats an economy? I actually started this army long before most the the 'bad stuff' hit I had an entire guard army for like a year and a half sitting in boxes in my closet. So I'm really just painting old stuff not spending this much now. Plus Tournament in store credit winnings has single handedly paid for 6 valks and a banewolf and 2 chimeras.... so I didn't spend as much as one might think.
Winter ; I'm using a combination of airbrush (for shadows and gradients), Sponge (for chipped paint effect and grime), and oils (for further gradient and grime effects and giving interest and color) I'm knocking them out quickly because admittedly enough I'm using a combination of 3 fast and effective techniques and I'm assembly lining as I go and I'm not spending as much time on them as I'd like too. :( I airbrush a cluster of tanks or vehicles at once. I add German C Black vallejo paint with a fine sponge around panels and such where paint would most likely chip. I then gloss coat them and use the oil treatment of weathering. (there's an abundance of places to find out how to do this) I then flat coat them and simply paint and pick out the details. Flat clear a final time.
Thanks for everyone for the swell comments as I'm painting on a deadline I need the motivation.
A small update I've started painting the valks post airbrush base coat and I'm happy with how their turning out. I don't have pictures now but plan too by the end of the weekend. And again, thanks.

Quick update. My pictures are rather behind. I have 2 vendettas almost done only lacking the little lenses and the canopy area. The bases are complete now too. I don't have pics of all that though. So here are some pics from the progress I made last week!
I assembled some more vehicles.
And here is my workstation.
Hopefully I can catch up with my pics and what I actually have done someday...

The Valks look kind of surreal to me just 'cause the design looks so modern compared to vehicles like basilisks and Leman Russes yet its so heavily weathered like all the other vehicles.
Although no DKOK vehicle should be exempt from any form of grit IMO, keep up the awesome work!

I painted the lascannon Barrel tips with shining gold for a base. Then from the front tip 75% was washed with red. Then 50% was washed with blue. Then 25% was washed with black. I then glazed the whole barrel with my majik sauce. (majik sauce = Acrylic floor varnish semi gloss, Vallejo Smokey ink, Vallejo purple ink, vallejo flesh ink, vallejo black, Vellejo brown violet. Mostly its acrylic floor varnish though. I mix to how I like it so I don't have exact ratios.)
I've decided on a brown uniform for my dkok's. Haven't got all the details picked out yet was my test infantry model isn't done. but the coats will the brown and all the metals and armor will be heavily rusted.
I won't be adding murals to my DKOK's as I want them to be far more militaristic than my marines.
And Thanks to everyone.
I have good news and bad news on this project. My tournament I prepare for is in 6 weeks a combination of life factors prevents me from having the time to finish my army within my goal range. I've been working 6-7 days a week because one of my co-workers had surgery a month ago and hasn't been able to be back yet. The game store I get all my stuff from is having trouble with his rep or some such something. I am short a couple of tanks and he won't say if he'll be able to get them in anytime soon. I don't want to rush the paint job on this army as I have too much time and money invested in it already. So I'm putting this project on hold. I'm pretty let down that I won't be able to finish my army because of factors out of my control. That's life I suppose... For this tournament season I'll be running my marines again. (Patior Angelica) So hop on over to that thread I'll be updating it instead of this one. I'll be modifying my army to be run as either wolves or blood angels. I dunno yet. I WILL RETURN TO MY DKOK'S! That's a promise and the good news is that I'll be afforded more time so I won't have to rush the paint jobs and this should allow for a better looking army for the 2011 season.

I'm Back!
Anywho This time with Colonel Stra.... Ananiel! A 3rd Company Dark angel Sergent. He'll be leading my Dkok's into battle. A long time ago I fell in love with Migsula's first Alpheriaus as did many of us. I've wanted to do one for a long time and this pretty much gave me the chance with Colonel Strakens Marine like stat line and weaponry. For the people that don't know the Dark Angels helped out in the seige of Vracks so thats pretty much how all of this fits.
The model and concept art are both WIPS at this point though.
Well here's some pics.
Here was his concept art. I'm writing a full back story for him as well.
I'm glad I get to return to this project.

Loved the story of the seige of Vraks! The darkness and sheer weight of the destruction of man and machine was a bit overwhelming, but it made me like Dkok that much more...
so very cool to see you bring it to the table top. Can't wait to see more finished models and the battle table top.
I don't remember Valkyrie in the seige, but it figures that air support would be critical. and those models are awesome!

Hes not a preheresy fallen or his armor would be black. He's at this point in time still a loyalist in fact. And hes going to be more of a renegade than a for the dark gods chaos guy too. At Vracks though he is still a loyalist. When I get done with my back story I'll share. I'm building a fluff heavy rules be damned Renegade Inquisitor and retinue and He's going to be one of the warrior henchmen. And thanks guys I can't wait to get him done and also I'm painting all the greatcoats now.

Allright... subscribed? Check. Fully semi-read and looked through? Check. Allright, here goes.
Sweet-sauce! Kinda new to Dakka, so I hadn't seen your renaissance Marines before spotting this P&M Blog, and holy f**k-bucket, that's some hardcore freehand! Given that in mind, what you initially set out to do with these Kriegers and the start on the mounted commissar and tanks, I'm rocking on my chair in expectancy of updates on this.
I really like how the Vendettas break apart from the army armor colouring, but retain the same... aura about them, so to speak. You gotta give us some cockpit shots when you're done wif 'em. Also, really looking forward to seeing your troopers once you get time to re-devote yourself.
The Kriegers look great, but I'm hard pressed to imagine something that suits them that's something original. I saw something on here a while ago with some sort of rusty-orange and blue scheme that looked nice. Other than that, it's mostly the grey/black/dark green mudcakes that so defines them. I'm really excited to see which direction you'll take with them as I'm sure it'll be something I haven't seen before.
Sorry to hear you weren't able to keep to your schedule. Terribly rude of the world not to stop and gawk in awe at inspirational wargaming hobbyist work like yours. You were on a deadline here! Geez... Automatically Appended Next Post: PS. Really like (well, the whole model, but in particular) the powersword of Ananiel. That some sort of Catachan thingie? Looks like some sort of gladius trim-job.

Don't know how I missed this blog, glad I found it.
I started an IG army back before Christmas, Cadian's were naturally what I bought. I haven't really had any desire to paint their boring and overplayed appearance. This and a fair few other DKoK threads have inspired me to trade in my cheap boring guys and head straight for their expensive and far more appealing counter parts.
Thank you.

however, it is strange that you have so many valks, vendettas and hydras. on vraks, the death korps didnt have any (or at least very few) of those, since air support isnt really needed or useful in trench warfare and the renegades didnt have planes thus no need for hydras.
just a fluff point, is all.

Thats the fault of the codex not the player. An army like this is a great example, the dkok are known for using artillery and yet their are no restrictions on them where this is concerned, There arent chapters within the IG. All weapons are the same, just diff colors. In fact I cant find most DKOK munitions in any codex except FW. So littleboyblues has made the choices allowed to him from the codex that would actually allow him to play.
Though you raise an interesting point. Many army configs seem less than fluffy. I get the fact that I have to have valks and Hydras in a tourney game if I want to win but what about fluff games and or faction differences? Do any play rule sets include fluff constrictions?

My local games club did and Imperial Guard tournament once in which we had to have a basic backstory and units which applied to it.
It was rather fun, I played an armoured squadron with some infantry support. Didn't have any AA support until about 5 turns into the campaign when I requested one.
Didn't help when I went up against the Airmobile guy, 3 Vet. squads in Valks. Nasty.
