Very very late three days ago and while watching 'The Empire Strikes Back' I began to formulate a slightly inane, 'what if' concept in that could I make a spin-off unit/small company of Imperial Guard based off the rebel forces of Echo Base (most likely station 5-7, or 3-T-8) So I began to brainstorm, sketch and research on how I could pull this off. So I came up with Tantaun riders, snowspeeders (scratch built), plenty of rebel infantry, the turrets from the films... and so on in to the future of impossibility (which included the like of Luke Skywalker in pilots overalls etc). The problem is my modelling standards arent fantasic, and I have never in my life used Greenstuff before. Nevertheless I decided I would at least attempt the concept, even if the guardsmen wouldnt quite look identical to their film counterparts and to at least try to bring a dream into reality (and to stick my head on the Dakka forum chopping-block). If I fail then its just more lessons learned.
My main references have been the various Star Wars books I have built up over the years, and pictures like this one:
The guard are based on Cadians, undergoing a slight change for their boots, extra armour and instead of imperial aquilas the Rebel Ranks as seen in the movies. So after four hours my test model has begun to come together (minus arms and head). I have tried to do the cross-thatched pads like so many of the troopers exhibit in the films, aswell as loosely shoring up the boots against the winter cold. Appologies for picture quality.
Side views, showing some carapace armour..
Front on view, belt still needs tidying up...
Please note this is very VERY WIP, and this is also my first attempt at using Greenstuff. Ultimately I will be improving on my original GS skills as I progress along. Comments on how to improve, what else would actually be in the army, how on earth I could go about things like the gun turrets and so on is all very much appreciated. Finally, thanks for reading and sorry about big chunks of text/me rambling.

This is a cool Idea, and I like the boots and the neck collar, you've done. If you did go for this it would be really fun to play. Definitely try and get at least a squad. Then do Sentinel AT-ST walkers. This could be really cool.

AT-ST's are Imperial.. SO GIVE THE REBELS SOMETHING TO SHOOT AT!
Btw, I love (and would love to paint) the sculpted "rank" buttons from the movie. I might just take this green stuff idea and slap it on an officer to give him a "Grand Moff" look.

Yes, metallifan, you are correct:
Wampas are a horned, clawed, white-furred, carnivorous species native to the frozen world of Hoth. They are a semi-sentient race of predators standing over 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, subsisting in the cold climate by hunting tauntauns.

Thanks! All the rebels in the films have the rank insignia too (because I know a fair few of them were renegades from the Galactic Empire), either on their chest on arm. And then the generals all have their rank on their left side of their chest, which consists of 3 or 4 red circles in a square. Its definitely a nice idea I'm going to be keeping on those I manage to make.

You have a strange sense of humour... Wampas have now been added to my checklist though. A pack of five... with lots of fur. I'll try to think of converson ideas later.

I plan to scratch build my snowspeeders, as I already have their dimensions in 14mm scale, and so plan to double them and make a blueprint and then go from there.

Excellent idea. I've always loved the Rebel SpecForce troopers. Only bloody decent thing about the alliance -EMPIRE ALL THE WAY!
Someone said about making snowspeeders. I think that's a great idea. Mix kits from SM Landspeeders and the Airfix Rebel Snowspeeder. Also, try your local library for inspiration. They usually hold lots of Star Wars graphic novels and will include lots of rebel gear.
If you can, grab one called "Entrenched" which focuses on a SpecForce trooper stationed in EchoBase and has some brilliant pictures. Like this:

No Rebels are way better! (It also can explain why no two of my men will ever be wearing the same clothes...
Snowspeeders/landspeeders being researched, as are Tauntauns, which I have already decided will be based off cold ones, except with fur instead of scales (extensive greenstuffing).
I had already read Entrenched. Its useful for the pictures, even if its a shame he dies at the end.
Update! I have finished my first test mini, bar tidying up his overall look. Pictures below...
Now I have begun to work on my second model, a rebel vanguard with rocket launcher. Colour suggestions and other comments for the test mini are appreciated. Thanks once again.

Ah yes good point they are imperial. But they would work well.
I was thinking how could you get Darth vader involved in a rival army, I guess he'd have to be a Chaos Sorcerer.
But would chaos marines work as stormtroopers?
And back on topic that finished model is amazing, it looks just right, its properly proportioned too so it doesn't look like a caricature.

There is no way I'm going to try and start another far fetched scheme, and I have seen Darth Vader done in warhammer form at least 3 or 4 times now. So no AT- STs and such. Rebels only!

Right. Update time!
My nooby war against greenstuff continues, and I now have 'finished' five infantrymen! So without further ado, pictures!
Crouching trooper, needs tidying up (like all other models so far)
'This is Echo station 3-7. We have spotted Imperial Walkers' was the impression I wanted from this Corporal
The Youngblood of the squad, awaiting further greenstuffing and tidying.
And lastly, a blurry group photo!
Still, I'm happy with the progress I've made so far. It seems my idea isnt failing as I expected it to. I might even be able to make an army out of this... We shall see.
And for my next trick I intend to get started on the prototype one of these DF.9 Anti-infantry turrets (counts as autocannon):

Rebel Scum? Never! They are freedom fighters (that and I want to be different from all the filthy empire lovers). For the record I would never work for GW. It'd probably make an even worse hash of running the company than they do. Still, the models I am working on are 'mine' and different from most other things I have seen.

Cheers. I do feel a little more confident with greenstuff now I have used it extensively on five men. I can only get better right? (and yup the parka hood is one of my favourite parts too. I am working on more of them at present.)
Brilliant idea for the turret top. I've got the main base made at the moment, but the turret top has been giving me a headache. So I'll go and try to hunt down some plant water dishes that are small enough for my purposes.

I've more or less finished painting my five men now (and yes I am aware my painting skill look likes a mess), minus a few tidying stages (that I've only just noticed having taken photos) and doing their bases (I have no snow flock yet).

Two more troopers (including test mini)
Kenny (with minor painting errors and rocket launcher paint issues)
Group shot while on painting desk
Thanks for reading. More to come.

Thanks for the compliments. I did have a look on those websites, since they are made by Wizards of the coast. I dislike their turrets, think they look too small and are too expensive. Might hit them up for their snowspeeders though if my airfix/landspeeder/sentinel hybrid doesnt work out.

Snowspeeders I dont know what I'm 'counting as' but I've just ordered a couple of Airfix snowspeeder kits from varying sources to have an experiment with.
Tauntauns as RR and Wampas as Ogryns are both on my 'to do' list.

Thankyou! Though, I cant stress this enough. Wookiee. Everyone always spells it wrong! But he is coming along okay... despite my issues with GS. Han Solo is likely to be in my Command unit, or as a special character. I havent decided. Finished the five more infantrymen's modelling, minus tidying and a minor amount of GS work to do. A fair few mistakes, but I'm learning. Pictures..
3 Basic Infantry (picture quality really went to pot on these)
Sniper in fur lined cloak
Sergeant with Vibro-sword (counts as CC weapon or Power Weapon)
Whats next? Painting up these five modelled infantry for a start. My trial Wookiee is slowly being finished being made, and I'll either begin on some turrets, or tauntauns. Havent made up my mind as yet. So whatever I finish first you will see I guess...

Right, and now pictures of my Dash Rendar, in model form. Used a few parts I salvaged off my own models and so are coloured. Stripping has already been done though, as these pictures were WIP. Needs tidying and such, but its looking better IRL than in the pictures.

To all. Thankyou very much for the kind and motivating words! The blade was just for show as I was making the model as I wanted to get proportions more correct. Still correcting/working on the helmet and clothing now. Glow-y blue rod has been ordered and will be added when the rest of the model nears completion.

Yeah, but 3PO's gotta have some silly fail rules made for him. You know, the equivalent of a BS 0 low WS, low initiative machine, practically 0s all the way down. Maybe even some special rules making him run at the first signs of trouble but hanging with R2 nonetheless, lol

Miss Dee wrote:Gotta see R2, 3P0 and Solo.
To Dee, Kaesar and Flinty. Thanks peeps. I do intend to do R2 and C3PO at some point. Its more of a matter of planning the model out and finding the parts to convert them!
As I go through these models there are usually three or four stages. The first is the planning stage, I tend to sketch parts of a model to see what works and what parts I am going to use. The second is making the dry/test run. The third final construction and the last stage being painting.
Currently there is a small load of models I want to do, but havent made it through the planning stage yet and so are currently tagged 'impossible' in my notebook. Han is currently in the planning stage (I'm going for the clothes he wears throughout EP:IV because Its easier to model). Chewie is through to the dry/test run stage. Leia, now you have given me the idea Flinty is also in the planning stage (again with an EP:IV look). I really want to include R2 or 3PO at some point but I have no idea to carry them out to stay in scale with the infantry already completed. Any ideas or suggestions on parts on how to pull those off are really appreciated!

Another update as an indication of progress. I've just about started to make Solo too and a few more infantry but have run out of GS. They'll have to wait.
So... pictures (memo to self, get a better camera). I'll probably take and upload more when I find the time.
Some minis on the paint station
Dash Rendar, almost finished
Luke Skywalker, almost finished with snow base! (I am still awaiting the plastic rod to arrive and so I am leaving the blue blade on for now)
I am also currently writing out an army list so I can work out what I have to do/can get done.
Thanks for reading once again.

Thanks CalPerr and malfred. Now you mention it that is a good idea! When I start the Tauntauns any hashed/ruined atempts can be made to be gutted on a 40mm base as an objective.

Update time!
I have been working on a 'counts as' lascannon team, and have had some success, basing the model upon the Anti-vehicle turret used on Hoth (though according to Wookieepedia the turret is meant to frequently break down and was originally intended for use in the Clone Wars. Well... you get what you pay for I guess). I havent finished the second crewmember yet either... or cleaned the edge of the base. Oh and the white on the dish is snow, and needs work.
So without further ado, pictures!
A couple of detail shots:
Again, some mistakes I need to fix, here there and everywhere.
Next, a finished picture of the 10 man squad I have been working on since the project began:
If you want individual shots of anything, just ask and I'll do my best to oblige.
And lastly, this is likely to be the last update from me for a week and a bit, as I head up to Uni on Saturday, and everything has to be transferred, boxed, left behind etc
Thanks for reading.

Thanks. Currently I intend to finish my heavy weapon team, add an extra three men to make a platoon command squad for them, and the get started on either: wampas, tauntauns or a second infantry squad. Thats up to vote really, so you people tell me what I should attempt next!
Snow is made from the old, bicarbonate of soda, mixed with watered down PVA, and white paint, then applied liberally to the base. Thanks go to Gundam Mecha for that.

Thanks chaps. Though I doubt I'll play much since I am bound to lose (my playing skills is non-existent). I can also see the problem my 'fluffy' army will suffer from, and that is a lack of tanks to the core, so it'll look nice but play badly on the table.

I'd vote for a second infantry squad to your platoon, purely because i know from personal experience that not getting it done and going into other projects just gets all the projects and ideas to pile up. I know this from having a small contingent of space marines, a partial force of imperials, and some witch hunter ideas that i'm throwing around while doing this, just resulting in a whole lot more partially finished and thought through projects, as well as an ork and necrons hanging around. Just my 2 cents there

Wow. I go quiet for a while and you go finishing loads of stuff. It's looking great!
It's entirely possible to do gunline guard. You could even replace tanks with turrets of varying types for Griffin/bombard etc. and replace Chimera with a stationary emplacement. Ok, you'd be doing yourself out of some speed, but I know guard players that just use Chimera as bunkers anyway
To get some faster transport, you could always do "counts-as" Valkyrie that looks like mothballed Republic Gunships.

Thanks! I do want to make some bunkers in future (a-la command points from the Hoth level in Star Wars Battlefront), and for a artillery I envisage the Ion Cannon itself. But both of these projects lie in the far future.
Valkyries as Republic Gunships! Now theres a good idea. Something like this?

Hrmm. I think you are right. When I get the chance I'll start on the second squad and get this little section finished before moving on to further projects.
My order of things I will finish now will be roughly something like this:
1. Finish platoon Command squad
2. Start and complete second squad
3. Finish Han Solo/Chewbacca conversions
4. Do Rebel Pilots as a special weapons squad
5. Tauntaun Riders
6. Wampas
7. Other stuff..

Currently all my warhammer stuff is boxed up, but when I get it out again I am going to have a tinker with a valkyrie kit and plenty of plasticard and see what happens. If I have to resort to toys at the end I will.
@Praetor. But why would I need servitors if I dont have any tanks? I am thinking of using R2-D2 and 3PO as inquisitor retinue, or excess personel in the command squad.

Servitors don't have to be for carrying out repairs. Servitors are automatons used to carry out many other tasks, including weapon servitors. I'm sure there are also servitors for recording data, tactical analysis, targeting systems... If you can, take a look at the DH/WH codexes as the Inquisitors/Witchhunters can include servitors in their retinues for various tasks

Ah my bad sorry. Servitors = droids from star wars then? Hrm then it might make more sense to have varrying droids as a retinue for some jawas.... maybe.

The more I think about it, you're probably better off using C3PO as the Comms officer in your command group with R2 as a Master of the Fleet?
For other droids, yes, using them to replace the Techpriest's servitors would work. I'd make the Techpriest either a Jawa (using plague monks) or an Ugnaught

I say go with using Valkyries cores and plasticard to construct T-47 landspeeders. More accurate for the time period and 100% accurate for Hoth. They would make a really good Vendetta. The might be a little bigger, but just call them T-47a-II or something and say they are modified for personnel carrying.
Or you could do a SM speeder with plasticard if you wanted a more accurate size.
Hope this helps!

R2-D2 would be a comms officer, and C3PO as an astropath, because that way I can have Admiral 'fishface' Ackbar as a master of the fleet.
Got to have Jawas. Anywhere I can get a single plague monk sprue on the cheap? Then I could have a few droids from out of Episode IV.

Valkries cockpit cores.... hrm.
To be fair I have been playing around with this idea, and I will most likely add them once the ground forces are getting more complete. (so the T-47s would be count as thunderbolts maybe) I intend to work from blueprints out of several Star Wars vehicles books, and cobble together parts from the sentinel, landspeeder and heavy weapons teams along with healthy amounts of plasticard to make some. I know how iconic the T-47s are in the Battle of Hoth, and so I want to do it right.

Once I am fully settled at my new address I'll order the parts. bitsandkits is pretty reliable right? And I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy a whole plague monk set, make 20 jawas and then have a sandcrawler 'counts as' baneblade.

As a long time star wars fan I really like these, and I've also been working on my own star wars inspired 40k list for the Imperials.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/239161.page#703605
I love the hoth theme and it definately provides a great look for the miniaturews as well as a chance for lots of unique modelling on each character.
IMO the trick of these armies is finding the right mix and balance of the 40k parts, I prefer to ground the majority of the stuff in 40k parts as there'd much less objection to playing the army if they can see that it's all based off 40k parts. I think that tautans and snowspeeders would be a good addition, unfortunately neither of those has a good 40k base model to work from, much like the AT-ATs they need ot be drafted from the star wars lines and changed up to have 40k bits.
My personal preference is to lean towards the side of the movie "canon" and only use items of the time period, so I think it'd be a bit odd to see a clone transport on hoth. If you run with it converting a valkyrie model to be a transport would be a good option, yeah it's a bit more exspensive than using a star wars kit but it's design has more lines of the imperial tech base from 40k, just remove the tail and make some adjustments to the body and it'll have almost the same body style as the clone transport, and you'll have all the actual GW weapons you'll need to outfit it.
I'd been considering using valkries for a clone army list once I finish off my imperial stormtrooper list.
May the force be with you

In several non-canon games the Rebels did use republic gunship transports (like in Star Wars Battlefront 2). Honestly, I have never said I was actually going to do it, as it was merely a concept under discussion. Tauntauns will be based on Cold Ones, which actually does work with enough patience (just wait and see). Then again, according to Wookieepedia other transports were used by the rebels too, so I will see what I will see I guess.
Saying that, thanks for the compliments. I'm a big fan of your stuff, and one of the balls that set me rolling on begining my own conversions.

If you don't mind crossbreeding with some marine equipment it'd be possible to use the marine landspeeder as nose piece for a Y-wing or an A-wing which could be played under thunderbolt rules. Or alternately pick up an X-wing model and 40k it up with bits. While not part of the ice field battle they have quite an array of fighters and various ships docked in the hangers on hoth.
I think the cold one base for Tautans is a great idea, it'll be a lot of sculpting work for the hair but it would look good, also consider using a fantasy ogre for the snow wampa.

Also, from a fluff stand point it makes sense that the rebels would be able to get hold of old, mothballed military equipment; it'd be far easier and cheaper to get hold of than new equipment. There's also nothing to say that the gunships aren't still in use by Imperial forces either. Just because you don't see it in the Hoth scenes doesn't mean they don't use it
Hmmm. Now I want to see a 40K'd version of the other tanks available to the Jedi/Rebels in Battlefield II/Star Wars fluff.
AAC-1 Hovertank - Counts as Manticore/Griffon
TX-130S Fighter Tank - Counts as Russ
QH-7 Chariot - Counts as Chimera
ATRT - Counts as light Sentinel
Rebel Combat Speeder - Counts as Heavy Sentinel
Or how about some Uggernaughts - Counts as Sentinel
or ATAP - Counts as Heavy Sentinel
There are other, less impressive looking tanks in the original Battlefield and Force Commander; but they look like boring, generic sci-fi hover tanks

I picked up one of these for about £8. The Revell one. Gave the pilot to my nephew. Put LR HB Sponsons on the sides and a Chaos spikey bits skull on the front. Still very much WIP (Shelved for the time being). It is much bigger than a GW sentinal.

OK. I remembered to take a photo. It's a mobile phone photo taken in the dark, so its not brilliant. It does have an incubi in the shot that will give an idea of scale. The top of the cab of a normal sentinal is just about level with the bottom of the cab of this beastie. Might go orkie, might go LatD. It's all packed away for the time being.

Thanks for the compliments. If you had read the thread you would know I am working on some Wookiees (so also, check spelling) and I am using Dash Rendar as Sly Marbo count as, whereas Han Solo will be taking on the role of Company Commander.

As already referred to, I am not using anything imperial at all until the first stage of the army has been built.

I'm sorry but Ewoks are just.... no They dont even use firearms and I do find them really annoying. Jawas for ratlings ftw!

Well its been a little while, and on a cold and somewhat rainy evening here I have found time to make another...
Update!
More infantry really though, so not particuarly interesting I fear. Oh and picture quality is variable...
Another two basic infantry
The completed Vanguard from the last update
And lastly my work in progress Leftenant
More updates in the works...
Thanks for reading, help and advice.

The Leftenant isnt meant to be any named character from the Star Wars universe, but I felt when I was making him it was characterful. Parts are all Cadian, with the exceptions of an Empire Outrider Cloak, an empire soldier head and a Space Marine scout sword. The chest has been heavily greenstuffed, but was originally a cadian torso. The pistol wielding arm was originally the chainsaw wielding arm, but has been repositioned and heavily greenstuffed aswell. Glad you like the work.

I thought so. It just seemed that he needed a great big machete!

Thanks! I am looking and I am slowly detecting my improvement. I have the crouching legs either as spares from heavy weapon teams, or the fact I am cannibalising my other heavy weapon teams (since the Dish turrets shown earlier in this thread need a standing trooper to operate them). Personally I liked the crouching Hoth Troopers aswell, as they are busy hiding in the trenches from the might of the AT-ATs.

Thanks. I have to say, there is a certain sense of achievement from me, having actually gotten some updates in.

Thanks for the compliments! I am really happy with how he has turned out. You can just about see the moustache drooping over the frontal shield on his jacket.

Just a thought, if you do go back to the Clone Wars transports for Vendettas....
Take one Valkyrie - discard the tail array. Extend the body between wings & cockpit using plasticard for the troop bay (with obligatory open doors (possibly just sliding the engines/wings back, and replacing the start of the tail booms with more card).
Cross the top of the nose (inc. canopy & crew) with a Devilfish nose, where you've removed the drone mounts and shaped the sides down. Not sure if you'd keep the chin turret, but its an option.
I haven't a clue if the scale is right, but its a thought.

Thanks! I didn't use much greenstuff for each I think. Maybe about 2mm along the greenstuff strip that GW sells and then cut across to encompass the blue and yellow sections. Usually thats more than enough for each trooper I found.
paulson games wrote:Love this army, any chance you can bring it to adepticon for 2011?
Well, first off I am sad to say this army project has somewhat flatlined as I've distracted by other projects (read: Call of Duty MW2, separate IG and Wood Elves, aswell as more social things like a new very important person around) but eventually when I get the motivation I'll start again. As with adepticon, being British I'll probably never go aswell as the huge travel costs for me being a poor student and all. Maybe someday I guess...
