Ok, I've finally gotten round on deciding a scheme for my IG based on the US desert pattern and done my first test mini. Comments and criticism please chaps;

Nice work. I think my only real comment would be to maybe pick out some more of the details. For instance the straps on the backpack holdin in the bedrolls/blankets might be better off in a different colour, even if its just black. Maybe also drybrush the backpack just a little to pick out some highlights.

I like it, the chocolate chip camo works nicely.
What did you make the backpack out of?

Brilliant. I love it! Now the only thing I would change would be to make the weapon all black.

I like the green lasgun, it goes well with the green pack and pouches.

I love the colour choices and their implementation. The only thing I have is that the lasgun looks a little 'flat' with not enough emphasis on the detail.

Thanks for the replies chaps!
Flinty: The finished models will have better shading and highlighting on the webbing and I'll pick out the straps etc. like you've said.

Napalm: The backpacks and heads are from Pigiron.

Sanchez01: I have though about this and may well implement it. Maybe even give the guns a desert camo like in CoD4

infilTRAITOR: Cheers! It would be a pleasure to face off aginst your Renegade Guard army. Some seriously nice work you have in your plog.

Here are some WIP pics for the infantry. I used Vallejo black primer purely because I think it gives a better base than GW primer. Bases were painted with Charadon Granite and Scorched brown as basecoats. Dheneb Stone is used for the Fatigues and headgear. A Devlan Mud wash was then applied over the fatigues;

Some work has begun on the Ogryns. I am using Scorched Brown followed with a Calthan Brown drybrush/highlight on the armour plates. Fatigues are the same as the infantry.

one tip, from a guy who has gone to war with a green pack with desert bedroll.. the straps holding the bedding down were still green as they are part of the pack itself.

other than that, im diggin the chocolate cookie dough fatigues

Really nice!

You're attention to detail is superb- loving the fact that the bayonet is fixed, so the pouch is empty. A lot of people ignore details like this, but they really enhance a models character.

Good job and I cant wait to see some more!

Thank you all for the feedback! Just a quick update to show where I am with the infantry. I've also decided to add calthan brown on top of the Scorched brown leaving the edges dark before painting the stones. I'll be painting them in batches of between 10-30 at a time;

That's an amazing camo scheme, the overall aesthetic all blends seamlessly.

But...

Are you going to greenstuff the ogryns some gas masks as well? Cos I think they'd compliment nicely.

Pheon IX Planetary Defence Force (IG) (update 7 Dec 09) @ 2009/09/26 14:46:54

Post by: Slappywag

They really do look great. As MGS said it all fits cohesively together.

About the green, I can see what everyone means but it looks OK. Perhaps a devlan mud wash and re-apply green maybe? I think it looks good anyway though so just a suggestion.

What about about machinery i.e. tanks and placements etc?

Can't wait to see them if you are going to!

I also agree about the gas masks for the ogryns.

Another quick update with my infantry progress. I've painted the bases to suit a cold baron besert, think Gobi desert where temperatures can reach down to -50c with winds coming from the Siberian steppes.

Anyway, here are the infantry so far, each squad will have a Vox Caster, Plasma Gunner and Sergeant equipped with Plasma pistol. Pricey I know but I just like Plasma weaponry B)

Work steadily progresses on the infantry. Still plenty of camo and detailing work to do and to decide on black or white squad markings on their shoulder pads and what colour to paint the lenses on their gasmasks. Suggestions welcome;

Post by: Red Thirst

I would go with either a red or purple on the lense color and go Black on the squad markings otherwise they wont show up

Pheon IX Planetary Defence Force (IG) (update 7 Dec 09) @ 2009/09/29 10:31:18

Post by: SilverMK2

You might want to go for a chemical orangy red for the squad markings... sort of like the colour of the lenses in the first picture in this tread, perhaps outlined with black.

I would be tempted to do the lens the same colour, perhaps with a metalic releftive quality. I don't know if it is possible, but you could try washing or drybrushing the lenses shining gold to do that.

Just snip the L shaped thing sticking out of the IG torso if you need a larger surface area for glue to stick to.

No, they are accessories from Pig Iron miniatures. They have a line similiar to IG and many of the extras packs work well with IG, such as variant heads and packs.

Just an update to show my impetus has not waned (although work is doing a bloody good job of sapping my energy).
I hope to have the Stormies, Penal Legion squad, 5 Ogryns and the Vindicare Assassin completed by Sunday evening;

And the group shot so far nearing combat readiness to hit the gaming table;

thesilverback: Cheers! I'm pleased the way it has turned out. Was always a big fan of the camo scheme.

Cadian XV: I have 9 Russ variants, 4 Chimeras and 2 Valkyries in the process of nearing completion ready to all be airbrushed in one sitting.

Shinoden: Thanks man, that's a handy diagram for painting lenses.

As a rule I generally stray away from more realistict uniform themes especially with desarts(i've been to way to many all over the world with the army), but I will profess im loving this gaurd army. The paint scheme is so simply yet so amazing. It was interesting you went with the choclate chip DCU's instead of the current ones(I miss those they were so comfortable), but it was a good choice. Made for some very striking models. Keep up the great work can't wait to see mroe.

Particularly liking the pig iron heads on the penal troopers- makes them look 'ard.

Quick question; whats the unpainted mini in the group shot? It's halfway down on the right, next to a foundation paint pot. Looks cool!

Empchild: Thanks man! the current camo scheme is a digital pattern isn't it? I thought the chocolate chip would be easier to do.

get to the chopper!:Cheers! I agree on the great minds bit too

CadianXV: I'll be doing three Vanquishers and some Chimeras next (just waiting for some spiffy looking resin turrets to arrive for the Chimeras). And the figure you refer to is indeed a commisar as spotted by Empchild.

SilverMK2:
Thanks again. I really didn't want to paint the Assassin black so decided to do him in the same camo. I'll be adding some camo netting to the sniper gun with some fine gauze once I've figured out how to do it. Hints and tips welcome.

Having been struck down with a devilish bout of flu on Saturday morning, my schedule had been thrown off track although I did manage to finish off a couple more squads (still have eyes and plasma weaponry to finish).
First up is my Penal Legion squad;

and enough squads for an infantry platoon. Just got to get me a HQ command squad and an Infantry Platoon command squad built up now. These guys will be riding in Chimeras backed up by some Heavy Weapon squads (again yet to be built :ermm: );

And a group shot;

Work is progressing on the Ogryns and Stormies and hope to have them completed by the end of the week.

Cheers all!

Shaman: I'll be using squad markings when I find some suitable decals.

Quick update with some stuff I ordered from Old Crow Models -
http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/ocproducts.htm
mainly for the turrets (which will be my Chimera turrets), but I also thought I'd check out thier Ghecko Scout vehicle. I was pleasantly surprised by the casting quality and value for money. I should have got the Ghecko pickup version instead to "counts as" my sentinals with the simple addition of adding a missile launcher and gunner in the back. Anyway, here are some pics;

Ghecko Scout vehicle (normal version);

and the turrets which came with a choice of three gun barrels and ml pod and mg pod;

now with Autocannon and Heavy Stubber;

how it looks on the hull with magnetized HK missile attatched (expensive I know but always useful for bulking out points in Apocalypse);

different targetting system from the PS guns sprue;

Thank you all for the feedback!
Update time again. Firstly the Chimera production line rumbles on. I've started adding rivets to the turrets to help them blend in with the hull better and flexible wire added ariels to the comms unit;

I've added the missile launcher from the Sentinal kit to the Gecko FAV, along with rivets, an ariel and Blu-Taccing potential bits and bobs to finish off ;

My friend Craig stumbled across some end caps for piping whilst at work and brought some round. His intention was to use these as radar domes for artillery pieces. I thought of using the smaller size for helmets for my Ogryns;

Gundam-Mecha: The turret is from Old Crow Models. The link can be found earlier in the thread.

Illumini: The bases are mainly resin ones from Dark Art Miniature urban range but painted desert to suit my theme.

CadianXV: Steal away mate . I will take a picture for scale of it next to a Valk when I've built one up. Who knows, it may even be able to fit inside and drive out the rear ramp

Lord Castellan Mik: Final organistaion layout will consist of something along these lines;

1 Emporers Tank Company consisting of 3 Vanquishers, 2 Executioners, 2 Punishers, 2 standard Leman Russ and a Thunderer siege tank.
1 Command HQ mounted in Chimera.
1 Infantry Platoon consisting of 1 Command Squad in Chimera and 3 Infantry squads by Mortar teams and Lascannon teams and various special weapon teams.
3 Veteran Squads mounted in Chimeras.
2 Penal Legion Squads
1 10 man Ogryn Squad mounted in a Storm Lord
2 Stormtrooper squads mounted in Valkyries
1 Gecko FAV squadron (3) "counts as" Sentinals.
1 Armaggedon pattern Basilisk battery (3)
1 Deathstrike Missile launcher

The majority of it has been bought bar the Basilisks, Deathstrike and Stormlord with most of it built.

besring: I'm not sure whether to leave the helmet as is or try and match it to the Pigiron helmets with a little conversion work.

Anyway, before I start any more infantry I thought I'd have the welcome distraction of getting all my tanks built;

Here are some Ebay rescues which I've been working on. The extra turret armour is from the bottom sponsoon plates with plasticard added for that ablative look (I hope);

The plasticard looks more like small squares of reactive armour, although that might be what you mean by ablative. Nice use of those parts of the sponsons, by the way. I always find the turret of the LRBT to be the chunkiest (and thus the ugliest) part of the model, and that does a lot to give it a much better-looking profile. Quite a vehicle pool you have there, can't wait to see it with the 'chocolate-chip' treatment.

I'm going to keep an eye or two (or three) on this thread. It's brilliant! I'm impressed at how you've gone through all of those Guardsmen so far. Nothing beats the IG footsloggers in 40k for me.

Normally I don't like to see such a huge amount of tanks compared to infantry - remember that a tank counts for many troops - but I do think that it fits in with the more high-tech feel of your force... And I've just noticed your plans for the army list. Looks good! Have fun with these guys.

Update time again. I've kind of come to a turning point with this army in that I want to change my chamo scheme to suit the gaming boards I have (should have thought about that in the first place). Anyway, the scheme I was thinking was the 357th Krieg Plasma Storm Pattern shown in the right hand column fourth one down here;

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=1100020&pIndex=1&aId=2400009&start=2

I'm not sure I want to spend time changing my gaming board and terrain pieces to suit a desert theme thinking it wiser to stick with the terrain I have and frankly I don't have the time at the moment (or anytime soon). Sooo... I'm gonna finish building the rest of the army and leave them unpainted till I decide what to do. I'll probably Ebay the four squads I've done so far and strip down the Stormies and Ogryns (and any other metals).

Now for some pics of where I'm up to with my Chimeras. I recieved the rest of my turrets from Old Crow Models along with some rather nice stowage sets. I've gone for the sunken rivets look on the reactive/ablative armour (always get those mixed up) and have magnetized all the HK missiles to swap in with searchlights.

and the company command Chimera;

I started on the desert scheme on 2 Russ' using 2 thin coats of Dheneb Stone with a Devlan Mud wash to use as the base;

Meanwhile I'm itching to continue with my Space Hulk Termies and finish off the rest of my BA. I'll see how it goes ^o)

Wow, that is a lot of armour

Love the base colours on the tank, it could almost be finished already (by my standard of painting anyway ).

Great work.

I like them. I like them a lot. I always wondered how well Old Crow stuff would fit as they sell them as 25mm. Time for me to make an order!

I'm definitely stealing the gecko for my Air Cav guys. I would be interested in seeing if they fit inside the Valk, or if they would with a bit of modification.

Great camo scheme - very Desert Storm.

Personally, I prefer the camo scheme you've come up with over the Plasma Storm one. Could we get some shots of your gaming board for a better idea of what colour scheme your changing to?

IMO, you'd be better off working out your own variant on that pattern- check out the IA books, they've got some nice ideas.

I really like the banner on your command Chimera, but I can't help thinking it needs more bitz. Extra radio masts and targeting arrays,etc.

Anyway, excellent work as always- the sunken rivets are a nice touch, as in the Grim Darkness of the far future there is no welding!

Well, it's been a while since I posted any progress of my guard, mainly due to CoD MW2 :blink: (damn that game and all those hours I've spent on it). Anyway, decided to stick with the desert camo. I've done a few mods to the lasguns converting them into autoguns by replacing the battery with a Bolter mag and trimming of the end of the muzzle. I've also done the boots a beige colour and changed the lenses to red (still work to do on them);

... and painting has begun on my Chimeras. I've used Dheneb Stone over a black primer in two thin coats (yep, it would be easier with an airbrush :ermm: ) ;

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Update time again with my Chimeras. I've gotten round to finishing the main base colour using Gryphon Sepia wash over two thin coats of Dheneb Stone. Once this was dry I then lightly drybrushed and dusted with Dheneb Stone again. I'm pleased with how they turned out considering I've been using a brush. I'm looking into getting an airbrush for my birthday in March next year. Anyway, I also managed to finish the tracks on one as well using a Charadon Granite drybrush over a black primer and then weathered with FW Dark Earth weathering powder. I also experimented with the powder on the tread plates on top of the track guards and bits on the sides;

and a group shot so far with a couple of Vanquishers;

Glad you decided not to sell the army in the end- its way too good for that. I'm really liking how your vehicles are coming on, will they be receiving the same camo treatment as the men, or just tiger stripes?

As an aside, I just noticed your thunderer conversion- any chance on a close up and talkthrough what you did?

Awesome looking army! Very desert storm. Loving the buggy's and that's a brilliant use of the Vindicare Assassin - I didn't even see him the first time I looked.

I really have no idea how I missed this thread until now, but I am floored by your work...

I am going to try your scheme out today on a couple Elysians to see if it will work...

I can't wait to see more of this project

For the love of God!
They look like America soldiers in Afganistan!
I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not...
But at least I'm sure that they are one of the nicest desert camos I have seen!

The only thing that sucks about that is your use of the word "Coldplay".

Change it to Disturbed's "Indestructable" and you're redeemed

Nah, it's the drama effect. Things are so much more horrible if a slow song is playing during carnage. For further study see Gears of War Mad World.

Cheers guys! Managed to get some detailing done on the lenses and aquilas. Also played around with the FW weathering powders. Still work to do on the hull heavy flamers and co-axial stubbers. I wish my decals would show up as this is holding me back from completing these guys.
