Craig and Chris are great hosts. Lots of locals and a huge variety of games played. WHFB, WH40K, FOW, Warhammer Ancients, LOTR, Warmaster Ancients, Babylon 5, ATwhatever, FOW, Wings of War, and a huge variety of historicals.

There are a lot of hobby stores in my area that sell GW stuff. None of them are stupid enough to not be friendly. Some are certainly more receptive to the hobby, though.

My non-gw FLGS closed down a few years back which pretty much coincided with my departure from the hobby. Then one day I had to get bored and peruse dakka only to find myself sucked back in. Unfortunately now the nearest LGS (hour drive) is the gw in glendale, which is apparently closing. I still get my modeling fix thanks to the warstore and maelstrom but I don't see myself learning the new ruleset anytime soon as there is apparently no local player base haha.

The closest GW store to me is half a day's worth of driving away and I live in a city with over a million people.
However there are about a handful of indie stores one of which has about 10-15 tables.

The local game store by me is Gamers Haven at http://www.screamingdragon.com/
Friendly store with a fairly strong local following. You can find all of the various GW games played up there plus many historical miniature games such as DBA, Warhammer Historical, French & Indian war, ACW, FOW, WW2 in a variety of other rule sets. They also carry a huge selection of board games and allow the tables to be used for any board games that you have picked up there and usually it is possible to sit in on a game if you are curious about it and want to try it out before buying it.
I try to make sure I make all my purchases there as we have already lost one local store due to lack of sales and do not want to see this one go away. Remember to support your local game stores or you could end up in the basement with a lot of dusty models and no games.

There are 2.5 gaming stores near me (I say .5 because one of them does not actively sell 'warhammer' models, hasn't held many tournaments for the miniatures games they do sell, but they do have a bunch of old codexes, which were fun to look at)
All three of these stores are ten miles away from me however, but that's not as bad as some areas. And no GW stores....I think the closest "Official" gw store around here is very far south of me.

I have one non-GW store (Tabletop Hobby and Game) 15 miles away from me. I've been a regular customer ever since they first opened in 1994, and they are a really great store. They have much more than just GW stuff, and I have a good relationship with them. They have a massive games room next to the shop and on Monday night it's crowded with people playing 40K. There is only one other gaming store in the KC metro area that sells GW stuff, and it's twice as far away. Last time I went there was to get the starter box for 4th edition WFB.
If a GW store opened up in the KC area, I would probably go in there once just to see how long it would take to get thrown out.

I don't even want to discuss this....
Story of the nearest gaming store:
"Got any Warhammer 40k stuff?'
"Yah, I think we have some of that." *Leads me off into a dusty corner of the store*
I look at it, its mostly 2nd edition codexes and no miniatures.
"Here's some of the newer stuff I think." *Shows me.. 3rd edition stuff!*
Its scary there.
On top of that, all the paints in the store are dry... yeah...

The nearest and only FLGS that i know of is about an 30min drive away from here , and it sells everything from GW exept for FOW , but also stuff as comics , action figures and stuff .
We also have a gaming "room" which is a building with about 3 tables for gaming and then there are three really long , semi-wide tables for painting ...
I know , we Icelanders are small , but there are so few in this hobby so we realy dont need anything bigger

The Fallout Shelter (ten minute walk) is primarily a comic shop, but they stock board games and Magic cards, as well (read: useless to me). Closest thing with GW stuff and wargaming tables is The Only Game in Town, about a 15-20 minute drive away in Sayreville.
http://www.togit.com/
Not the biggest or most impressive store ever, but they have a few tables for wargaming, a few tables for painting, and a few tables for card-/boardgames. They've got a TON of Magic cards and a solid selection WFB and 40k, as well as paint. They don't have EVERY single GW product and probably not more than one box or two of a unit on the shelves, but they have enough to flesh out pretty much any army. They also carry FoW, Axis & Allies, and assorted other cardgames, boardgames and minis.

I have The Outpost in Wallsend (15 minutes away) with gaming space/tables.
I will soon have another independent in the CBD (where GW have had it too easy for too long.). After the late 80's quake, most businesses relocated leaving the cbd a ghost town.

Currently I'm in the middle of the ocean where there are no gaming stores but before this I had a Battle Bunker a short drive one way and another GW store the other. Also around there was friendly chain store (won't name) where I'd buy paint, brushes and tank accessories. One of the employees (who used to do 40K) would give me the chain's standard military discount despite the store owner's personal no military discount policy. That place ruled.

Not that the GW stores are bad, but I've never really been able to fall in with any of the crowd like I have with my local shop ( Avalon Comics & Games). I live 8 miles from an awesome gaming store in Burlington washington(not DC). They are uber friendly have a HUUGE selection and a whole bunch of gameboards for warhammer or other games. Get this... they even have a foam replica of that big lord of the rings place, Helms Deep I think. Not to mention the gaming systems with all the new games for rent! Anyyyway, they totally rock.OH!!!They also have a huge cabinet full of models that you can borrow. They also have food and drinks for a good price. Their tournaments are twenty dollars entry but they supply pizza and pop. Or fifteen if dont want the food. Here are the coordinates:http://www.battleden.net/
Come check it out, there is a whole bunch of other stuff that I am too lazy to type right now. One more thing, On Thursdays they have 40k night, a couple times a month they have all nighters from 7 to 3 pm, including pizza and pop. Peace out. (sorry for rambling on and on )

I live about 15 minutes one friendly store. Pretty much any 40k/Fantasy item you'd want there, plus many more GW items and other board games. They're really good about not pressuring you into buying anything. Can you tell it's not a GW store? Ha. They do a points system that gives you 1 point for every dollar you spend. When you get 100 points, you get $10 off your next purchase. I went in to buy a few boxes of Boyz (one box I got for $13!!) and some Kans and was asked to stay for a tournament they were having that day. Too bad I had to work.
I live 17 minutes from the second store, Castle Comics and Cards. They're more a comics store, with a few tables to play 40k/Fantasy/Warmachine/whatever you want. They'd have more room if they unpacked all of their stock that is just sitting in boxes in the back room. The owner is really nice though and she takes 10% off of any 40k purchase because "it's really expensive." They're not really big on tournaments but they're really friendly.

Within 10 miles (16 Km) there's a few more model shops, some with games clubs, and another GW.

I live around 30 minutes away from a small comic/gaming shop called Cyborg 1 when I'm at my parent's place - it's a very friendly and clean store, and the main guy there, James, knows quite a bit about Warhammer, Magic, and a few other gaming systems, mainly Heroclix.
When I'm at school I try to go to Showcase Comics, mostly the one in Glen Burnie, since it's only a 20-minute train ride away (that is, if I'm able to get out of the darkroom and get down to play, which has proved difficult so far...) I've gone down to their Granite Run location once or twice, but it's a much longer ride, so Glen Burnie usually winds up being my stop of choice. Love the gaming community at both locations, but like I said, I rarely get the chance to go down and play - schoolwork's gotten in the way quite a bit.

There are a total of two gaming stores in New York City. A GW store in Greenwich Village, and The Compleat Strategist. The store manager and two GW employee's there are not bad, but I have better options when it comes to finding someone to play. The Compleat Strategist just sells wargaming stuff, and every board and role-playing game you could want. They do have a wargaming club that meets there, but again, I have better options when it comes to finding someone to play. Neither of these two stores are in convenient positions for me to visit.

There used to be an official GW near me but they closed due to rent issues and all that jazz. However I am lucky enough to have two FLGS in close proximity

I live near a not so friendly gaming store. Good stock and all but by the warp, the staff is as friendly as a Culexsus assasin on crack

No 'close' FLGS for me, but Darksphere is in London which is about an hour by car.....
My closest GW is Oxford, thats around 25 minutes by car if I give it the beans or 35 minutes if I just cruise depending on traffic of course!

I'm blessed to have about 4-5 F (and not so F) LGS within an hour of me. The only GW store I ever saw in St. Louis closed, though.

I live a few hundred steps away from Maelstrom Games. Great store and staff.
Then in Nottingham City, around 10 miles out, I have the main GW store on Friar's Lane and Warhammer World a couple more miles out. Spoilt for choice...

45 minutes away from the Memphis GW Battle Bunker. The staff is friendly and helpful, there are a few douchebag regulars though.

The nearEST game store is an hour a way from my gaming circle and I. Needless to say, I order most of my models online.

I live "near" a Games Workshop store, and a kinda friendly non-gw gaming store. If you consider near to be an hour to non-gw, and 2 hours to GW....

I wouldn't say "near" by *cough* two hours *cough* but Its really nice and worth the drive. Now if only I had my own car.

My nearest game store(s) are both about a 20 minute drive, and both of them are friendly. I only go to one of them, however, because the store is largely focused on wargaming (huge focus on 40k and WHFB, with a large variety of other games like Anima Tactics, Warmahordes, Flames of War, and a few other obscure ones) and has a weekly 40k league. The other is more laid-back and has a gaming circle that meets once a week for fun, casual games. The store itself is more card- and role-playing-based as well, otherwise I'd probably venture to that one.
Honestly, I feel blessed to live where I do, because it seems like some of you fine Dakkanauts have the misfortune of having to drive miles and miles to get to a gaming store. I feel for you guys.

In a hobby, there really is no place for hostilities, you do hobbies to relax, not get pent up about unfriendliness.
