It's back! This is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!
The Rules:
1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge presented.
2.) Take a WIP shot of your model before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
3.) Paint your model!
4.) Take another shot of the completed model and send it in to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before Midnight Central (GMT-6:00) the night of the Deadline!!
5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.
6.) Public voting will last for 3 Days. And the Top 5 Entries will go on to be voted upon by our Judging Panel. The Winner will be announced soon after!
Notes:
The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. This does not claim publishing rights. Once the voting is over, feel free to post your model all over the web ^_^!
Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.
Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward...
Images:
Pics of your model may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels . The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them.
The Prize:
The Winner Recieves: Dakka Bragging rights, A Dakka front page announcement of your glorious victory, the respect from your fellow modelers, and a prize package worth $50 from AwesomePaintjob.com!
The Challenge
Nitty Gritty Armor
The worse the weather, the more you are required to be out in it.
Off the assembly line she rolls, onto the train headed for combat. Six months in and the hatch barely opens any more and the view port has been bashed out by some local kids with rocks! The idler wheel is about to fall off and the skirt armor has holes the size of fists from all of the blasts it's taken! And the dust!! Oh the dust!
This is just one of a million stories you can create as you move forward with this challenge! The idea is simple, paint a Tank/Skimmer/Walker/APC and make it feel/look real and used! It's time to use all of those techniques you've been wanted to use for all these years but never quite had the right project to try them out on! Water Streaks, Oil Marks, blast damage, paint chipping, rust, mud, dirt, dust, jet exhaust, scorch marks! The amount of weathering is up to you!
The Deadline: November 8th, 2009: Midnight Eastern Time (GMT-5:00)
Challenge Rules:
Model must be a single tank kit. Crew additions such as drivers, commanders or riders are acceptable
If you have ANY questions regarding the competition, please feel free to ask here or email DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com!!
For those of you who might be new to Dakka and haven't seen this before, check out The Dakka Painting Challenge Article.
Happy Painting!

Is this a competition to see who can weather Armour well? can I post a pic of a world war 2 tank i have done?
11893
Post by: deffskullz
accordint to the rules you must have WIP pics and started in this month
372
Post by: grey_death
The entire point of the contest is to start and finish a vehicle/walker/whatever within the allotted period. In this case, from today until November 8th.
Models can not be shown prior to the voting thread post at which time they are unveiled by me for that purpose. When voting is all over and the winner is announced, anonymity is finished and people may post their model as they wish, and I will put names to models so that people will know who did what.
Historical armor pieces are perfectly acceptable though.

I don't think you quite understand the idea behind it. You have to start and finish the piece from now until November 8th. Anything that's already done can't be entered.
14694
Post by: Lanky-feck
Oh right can it be my newest =][=mod edit=][= thats basecoated
372
Post by: grey_death
basecoated models are acceptable. Take a WIP photo before you start the model and include that with the final entry photo.

can you scratchbuild and convert?
372
Post by: grey_death
Scratch builds and conversions are more than acceptable.
I'm going to go ahead and say Deffkoptas are welcome to join the fray. They're substantial enough a vehicle and will allow for some really fantastic weathering opporunities. Bikes and Jetbikes are acceptable on this same logic.

Are there any limitations on size? Does it have to be just the vehicle or can it be inserted into scenery, as in a diorama?

Hmmm... What to paint...
Still, given the nature of the challenge, and the fact that we've seen GD's models, I'm thinking I have about a snowball's chance in hell.

Do a joke diorama with half the vehicle badly weathered and the other half with grots crawling over it scraping off the rust and repainting it all nice and new.

So we don't actually submit anything ( WIP photo, entry etc) until it's done? Do we need to sign up or just send in the final before the deadline?

Post by: grey_death
We've never had any issues with having your model be photographed with a background before, so I'm going to say Diorama's are more than ok. Just be sure the focus is on the vehicle!
Also, Tau Battlesuits crisis suit and larger are allowed. I think they are suitably walker-ish.
As for sending things in, don't worry about sending anything until you've got your final photos ready to send in. Then send everything at once. This saves me time in the long run.

Hi - thinking of stripping a badly painted/assembled 'tank' and weathering it for this comp. Quick question - should the initial wip be of the badly painted version, or the freshly stripped? (edited to minimise the 'publically announcing your entry' issue!).
1452
Post by: BigJon
I'll give this a shot, I'm in.
BigJon
372
Post by: grey_death
Freshly stripped would be best for the purpose of the WIP
14571
Post by: gretar
Does the WIP include the model ENTIRELY not painted , or can i just have a before/after picture (the before counting as WIP ofcoure?) ?
372
Post by: grey_death
Less than 10-15% paint is a good rule of thumb. This means at most the colors are blocked out for 1 or 2 colors.
If the model is obviously nearly painted in the WIP, it will be rejected.

Would something like a Stompa be acceptible?
6454
Post by: Cryonicleech
Hmmm... Maybe I can get off my lazy behind and paint up a =][=mod edit=][=...
372
Post by: grey_death
Unfortunately Tyranids are going to have a hard time with this one. They're just not vehicle based in any way shape or fashion. The closest I come to thinking of nids as a 'vehicle' would be the bio-ships from BFG. So unfortunately, they'll be sitting out this go around.
Stompa is a vehicle and is therefor acceptable.

Remember, the voting is anonymous, so if you have a project log covering the model you paint or publicly declare what you are painting then you may not be allowed to actually win the prize as it could skew the voting with popularity instead of painting quality. If you have already mentioned what you might be painting then go back to those posts and edit them to not state your contest entry! Read the rules in the first post multiple times because even though we are generous, if you do not meet the standards listed there then you wont be able to win.

I know some of you out there are thinking "But G_D, I don't know how to weather my tanks!", well I'm about to mess you up with some knowledge whelp!
Anyone who's read TPC knows that I have a special place in my heart for all types of weathering techniques and methods. And when it comes to weathering and battle damage, it takes ALL kinds of different avenues of approach to get it looking how you want.
So to start us off here is a link for a bunch of different methods I've found work for me.
Another good source is LBursleys set of video tutorials on AwesomePaintjob.com where he has a few really great weathering videos.
ScaleModelMedic's Channel is also a good stop for anyone looking to expand their weathering horizons.
Maybe you're looking for some inspiration from the military modeling community? Mig Productions Forums are a good spot to stop in and look at all the pretty pictures.
++++++++++++++++++++
I'm pretty much ready to begin painting on my entry. Just a few things to add (after a quick stop by the store to pick up some things), and I'll be knee deep in painting for the next month.
How are you doing?

Awesome links grey_death, thank you...
Two quick questions - are we allowed to ask for help/tips on the forum here? ...and will our models be judged on how much weathering or just the quality of say, even a very small amount, of weathering?
My model is still in 3 pieces and I've decided to start painting it as such - so far I've got several of the base coats down and I've already shadowed & highlighted the main armor color - and it looks so damned good clean. I am a bit weary about weathering it heh...

Tips and help are fine, so long as it doesn't disclose the model you are working on ( example: 'I'm working on a Leman Russ, how should I go about this...').
Models are judged on the overall paint job. In the end, people will judge on the best paint, with special consideration being paid to theme. If a little is effective for the piece you are doing, then only weather a little. If a lot is more effective, weather a lot.
Sounds like you are progressing nicely! In the end, when it comes to dirt, grime, and battle damage, you just need to make the leap and run with it.

I have to say the time frame for this contest is quite short... I'd have liked another month to add banners and finishing touches etc, especially considering there are several things I am trying for the first time...
If I can get the metallics done in the next few days I'll be happy with my progress! ...if I don't go blind first that is.
Is there somewhere I can see all of the previous entries and winners to these contests in one place?

I'm close to tossing in the towel here I have to admit...
I stupidly brought my mini to gaming, and the first person to pick it up dropped it on the hard floor - after some glue and touch-up it's almost good as new.
I painted up my scrolls & seals beautifully, then while trying to add 'writing' to them, turned them into absolute garbage.
While mixing paint to re-do the scrolls & seals, I dropped the large mixing brush, soaked in paint on my mini - filling what seemed like every crevasse of the model.
I'm just going to leave it alone for a few days I think hehe...

Yeah, that stinks. I ran into a snag with mine as well, luckily it is an underside issue so it won't be visible. I made it work but if you turn the thing over it'll look like complete gak. Take that break and relax.

I'm deep into base colors right now. Regretting my lack of airbrush, but I'm making due.
A few hiccups right now, but I'm taking a break from the annoying parts and moving to doing something different as I think things over. So some paint has been thrown on a few of the more 'minor' things.
How goes your progress this weekend? Anyone have any good armor/weathering links for the weekend?

Post by: GoFenris
As previously stated, "fixed" my underside (just don't look underneath) and am spending a lot of time preparing the model for multi-layer primer and effects. I have never gotten this complicated on a model before and am finding the whole process quite exhilarating. Still looking at beginning to lay primer around Wednesday or Thursday morning. I, also, am lamenting not having an air gun but I'll make due as well. Las Vegas sometimes gets windy this time of year (and is supposed to be this week) I just hope it doesn't delay my primering but at least temperature is never an issue this time of year.
I don't have any links, sorry. I just have a couple of old books for reference/ideas and of course links provided on Dakka.

I had a head start because I had a model built and primed when the challenge started, so I just needed to start painting.
I just need to finish weathering the wheels, add a few minor details (flag, etc.) varnish, and take the pictures.

A bit of an update to the contest:
The prize package, while still worth $50, will be supplied by AwesomePaintjob.com instead of chosen by the winner. This comes after some unforeseen issues popped up, and as such they've had to remove their online store.
If anyone was hoping to get any of the online shop products, you'll have to contact them directly via email.

Ok wait - make that destroyed 3 times and hopefully fixed 3 times. ...I may have gone too far this time.

Oh man, these weeks have not been kind to you Gunzhard. Maybe all of this destruction will leave the model looking beat up enough to enter?

We've got what? 11 Days to go?
I know I've gotten bogged down! But I'm slowly trudging through with the model. This is one of the harder challenges we've ever done and the usual 'it's not looking right' has hit me with my entry! I had much the same feeling with my Land Raider though ^_-.
How's your entry coming?

I wasn't going to enter this, but I've just been reminded of the remains of a =][= in the bottom the of my bits box. It's covered in paint and has been hacked about a bit time and again over the years. Time to strip all that paint off and get it on life support to try to make something out of it in the next week.

I'm also at the 'it's not looking right' phase too. Though I mostly recovered from the last big mess I made. I sort of flubbed the greenstuff work, which I clearly should have done before I started painting anyway but it's not too noticeable. Once I straighten out the colors here, and somehow make it look 'right', I'll just need to base it and add some final details. My narrative is pretty much done - cheesy but fun.
EDIT: I think a major obstacle in this for me will be taking a quality photograph.

Ditto, Ditto but I just encountered a bright spot. I had it stuck in my head that Sunday night (The 1st) was the deadline and I was not gonna make it but checking the thread has filled me with a great sense of relief . But, it still isn't looking quite right and I have to remind myself I have a few steps to go.
I hope we all post some really cool stuff!

I went to war with the plastic card last night. Dear god, after breaking the old kit up and some hacking and slashing, I can't help wondering if I'm closer or further away from finishing.

I've built mine, but now the weather is too bad to spray it, so it's currently on hold. Bah.

I know you can get away with spraying if you move really quickly... I had to do that myself recently. It works if you only have one or two things to spray, you run outside, spray, and rush the model inside as fast as you can. The paint will smell a bit as it dries but the fumes shouldn't be too bad.

I did that this morning before work, still a bit blustery though. It's a pain mid week because it's dark by the time I get home and really is too cold. The rest of the time there's either a lot of wind or it's actually raining. I wouldn't bother if there wasn't a deadline, on the other hand it'll be ready (just) for painting by the time I get home.

Just started on my entry. Damn getting married and going on honeymoon getting in the way of painting!
Not very far along with it, but I will grab some supplies from the 24 hour Tesco over the road (salt and hairspray etc) when I go and get some stuff for dinner.
Have a vague idea as to what I will be doing, just hope that it looks ok, even if it does not win anything

Congratulations! And best of luck on completing your model. You have a good reason to be behind... I on the other hand... don't.

I know one technique I think is possible: Add glue to mud, add a sliver to the paint brush (before the glue dries, or glue later), paint or side and tracks, then wait to dry. Handle carefully as it ruins models permanently and may shake off. Just make sure there are as few stones as possible in it. Another torture paint you can do is freeze your model (in a DRY cooler, or else the drops of condensation ruin everything) and smash the model with a nail and hammer on a few pinpoints. If frozen enough, it give a bullet dent and maybe some spallation cracks!! A greaty muddy, holey model, complete with coffee stains and a few sooty traces Try it, I haven't! Edit: Errrr....having read the rest of this thread...I..I don't think tghis is necessary (shut up noob)

I emailed in my files this lunchtime.
Even though as a mod I can't win, I hope to pick up a few votes anyway.

I'm hoping it'll hide the gak bits!
But it's now little more than three days, and I've barely got a base coat on. The nice thing about this is that I'm pushing on to make something I've been putting off for months.

There is no way that I will have finished mine in time, but I have certainly painted far more of it than I would have otherwise (ie I have actually painted it some of it )
Perhaps I will do better next contest. Might also lay in some extra weathering supplies too. Having researched weathering a bit, there are a few things I am eager to get my hands on... *writes his Christmas list* [bwahaha]

What I learned in doing this piece was that you can do a lot of weathering without any specialist supplies.
Good luck to all!

A scant Thirty Minutes left before the official close of the Contest!
++++++
Unfortunately, my entry won't be making it in this round. I had a lot of 'life' show up the past few weeks, and it just didn't pan out for me unfortunately.
Even tried to scale back with a smaller project, but that didn't work out either thanks to this past weeks events. Hope to get them finished anyways and get it all posted for people to see.
Some fun entries so far, can't wait to share them in the AM!

@grey_death - I'm new to the whole competition thing - where will the entries be displayed?

Post by: Deff Dread red Edition
I know you asked Grey the question, they will firstly be put in a thread where in Dakka will vote for the winner and then that winner will be displayed on the front page(IIRC the voting thread is usually in dakka discusions or right here in painting and modelling).
On a side note, can't wait to see all the entries. Sounds like a really interesting competition.

Thanks for the info - its all good, I was just addressing Grey the question cos he's the mod, I'm happy to get an answer from anyone that knows more than me
