ya cant really tell anything by the pics not gonna lie. If you could make them verticle that would help a lot, plus they are pretty dark.

Is the model finished?? Right now it looks like a lot of flat color with the sword being strikingly different.

Vertical pictures would help too.

I put them in my (homemade) lightbox and used a highly flurescent lamp and flash on the camera!!!!

The last pic is much better, daylight also really helps when taking pictures. i really like the green, and the purples looking good but i think you would benefit from picking out details like skulls etc. in gold/silver. I also think a different colour trim on the shoulder pads would do wonders, not sure what colour though. Finally i think lining the gaps between armour plates with black would help give more definition to the model.

BTW, i think its a really good effort, dont take the comments the wrong way, they're just tips on how to get better.

/agree with Vitruvian XVII. I like the blending and shading of the purple, there is just to much. A bit of contrast would help greatly.

Also, im really liking the power sword, i dont usually see green.

Ok DC, calm down.

The purple really cries out for some trim color. A metallic color would look great as would maybe bone or cream. Something needs to break up the swathes of purple.

DC's one man show! @ 2009/10/22 22:16:48

Yah, pick out those skulls in bone, not a metallic.

The paint looks really thick in some areas (like his greaves/thighs) and I feel like the wiring and eyepiece are colored too close to the purple, which makes them very hard to notice. I wouldn't want them to be an incredible contrast tothe purple, but I would like it if they stood out more, it would bring a bit of depth to the model and color pallete. I also wouldn't mind seeing another color brought into the mix in order to really make the model pop. Right now it feels fairly muted to me and while that might be ideal in real life, often times in order to make the miniatures really pop and look impressive you want to create a scheme that is eye catching and draws attention to the models. the sword is a good start on this for sure, but Ijust think it would be nice to see the green utilized a bit more through the model. Maybe use it for the wiring and eyepiece?

You've got a great start though and you're doing some great work. I really like the banner, and I like the tone of the purple (and I'm sure the pictures leech some of the depth/richness of the color making the model look a little more drab in pics than in real life). Keep hamming away at them man, you'll just keep getting better and better.

Hey DC, you have come a long way! I really like the green on the power sword and the trim makes the purple armour look alot better. As the above post said the eyes kind of get lost, maybe a bright color to set them apart? The poster looks killer too btw. Keep up the good work

Vitruvian XVII wrote:Schaeffers Last Chancers have a couple of female models iirc, otherwise, ask 'get to the chopper!' in his blog, he did a couple of female guardsmen

Yeah I used the body from 'Warrior Woman' and the legs from a Tau Fire Warrior. It was a pretty tricky little conversion though, so I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't very good at chopping models up.

At one point there was a company who made Cadian bodies with slim waists and boobs, but I think they got shut down by Games Workshop. TBH if you want to make a large lot of female guard sculpting and recasting would be the only viable option. I've seen woman guard done with elvish torsos, but they look a little bit funny IMO. The bit that is the most important for conveying their womanhood is giving them wider hips and slimmer waists, which is really hard to pull off effectively short of a big sculpting job, which would obviously be an enormous time investment (not to mention the time taken to get good enough at sculpting to do it).

I am pretty (very) terrible at sculpting, so i think I will use some glade guard female torso's...

The rotten flesh is very convincing. However i personally would like to see something that says Guardsman on him.
I mean apart from the Lasgun. The flagelant bodies are cool and all but i think you did something wrong with the face.

that iron band in the middle hides his face. I am ok with that. The flesh colour however does not contrast enough with the metal mask-thingy so that his face is visible.
Then again maybe that's just the photo flattening all colours and it may well be crystal clear in real life

For the eyes on your marine I would either go with red or green. The green would tie in with the plasma pistol and the sword, so now that I think about it I would go green. The guardsman looks good to btw, I like the heads hanging off his belt. Keep up the good work

Just as a little sidenote DC . . . the link to your blog doesnt seem to work . . . just keeps coming up blank

You seem to be a little grrr about not getting replies . . . with this bieng the internet the sort of people who reply arent always around . . . or like me just like to look at the pretty pictures Just keep cool and go at your own pace . . . if you really need opinions on what to do its more them doing it rather than you

I do like your work DC, at times there are bits which arent that great . . . but youve got good concepts with your skills.

The dragon idea sounds cool, if its done right that is. I wouldnt go with a howdah maybe . . . if its going to be flying then the big bit just sticking up wont help it fly, smallish slim one would be good. Get a bigger picture and show us plans for it yeah :p

Before i go rambling about the pictures , i want to say that these are somewhat good models Here are some tips on both pictures and modeling/painting .

- Get some tools for modeling . Without tool there will be fingerprints and it wont look as detailed as it should ..

- Make sure the camera is focusin on the models . I saw atleast 3 pictures where the focus was on the background , the paper underneath or just was'nt in focus .

- Get better lighting . Put your model under a lamp , with white paper in front of it and sunlight in the backround (not necceseraly pure sunlight , cloudy / rainy weather works fine too..).

- Wash the blue skin of the traitor guys . That will add more depth to the model .

- Keep posting ! One day or another more comments shall arrive

Yay a reply!

I plan to buy some tools but I need to get some money.

what wash would you reccomend?

I am finding it hard to wash the flesh without ruining the colour

I am currently using a wash of watered down charadon granite

thanks!

no, started with dark flesh, 3 more layers with added elf flesh, 2 more working to a final highlight of bleached bone before appling a very watered down wash of baal red ogryn flesh and devlan mud before re-hghlighting elf flesh up to bleached bone.

about an hour and a halfs work

Hey, those scout poses look good. Haven´t been on much lately, so I hadn´t seen them till now.

Also, as others have said, liking the painting more and more. Washes are a godsend for rank and file work.

thanks.

I like the new washes but there seems to be nothing for white.

Badab black ruins the colour to me and makes it uneven.

I usaully water it down 4:1 but then it does not work much anyway :S

Thanks for the nice comment ^.^

I hate the scout poses so much.

They look like to REALLY old metals, but worse.

I hate the forwards feth pose with the wepons at the side.

It looks ridiculous....

anyways.

Gryphonne Sepia or 1:2 water - devlan mud seem to work for me

Looking good! Try using a thinned codex grey, alternatively.

These last suckers does'nt look bad at all, I just wondered in the beginning, how can the marine only have basic colors and a wash or something similar and that poster look that great! Also that book with the eye inside looked rather nice! But your normal guys just aren'T thaaaaat good... Seem to be just drybrushed... I think you can do it as good as the poster or book and they will look just fantastic! Althoug the Space Wolf looks fine to me

thanks

The problem is I don't have the time (or patience) to paint every man to that.

My marine took me a bout 8-10 ish hours, while the marine I am doing have only had 2-3 hours.

I have to fit in school, homework, chores, assembly, and pet handling (I have geckos ((and one is preggers)))

and I am not organised.

and lazy.

doing more work now

thanks for the comment.

I aprreciate the time it takes (this sounds cheesy)

I know, the hobby can be rather time consumpting, but I always think, hey, I've spend about 30 bucks for this unit, if I paint them bad, its not worse the money... but you're right, I#m also going to school and it just takes so much time and sleep is getting so little o.O

It's good to see how you've improved; some very nice work there on that guy. How goes the rest of your army?

thank you very much ^.^

the rest of my army is going REALLY slowly.

I am focusing more on my watercolours.

I am planning to finish some marines

I always put too much detail into my bog standard marines. I don't want them to look bad but at this rate i will have none painted!

HELP!

Overall your painting have improved very much DC and your call for help will be replied. You have mentioned before that 1 marine takes around 8-10 hours? (correct me if I'm wrong) this is quite long for a standard model. Maybe you should get a batch painting technic that is more efficent, I myself paint my chaos marines 3 at a time. Study the detail of the models and then come up within what stages you will apply your colours in the most efficent way. So for me panting marines that is painting the eyes first and then all the basic coulors, then washes and tyding up. After that add more detail like layering, drybrushing and highliting and then it's pretty much done.

Now I hope that I have made myself clear (english is not my first language so bare with me) but I hope it will help you mate

i agree, painting more than one marine would save you time (and paint i guess), or at least prime all at the same time, ( thats what i do because priming is kinda tedious :/)

btw how is the bastion, any updates on that?

Heya, not a bad looking army... I just wanted to mention something though... The picture you have of that purple dragon over the trees should be taken down from your gallery until you actually modify it. Thats a McFarlane Dragon, posting it in your gallery makes it seem as though you made it yourself.

ah I see

anyway's I find it very hard to do batch painting as I get caught up trying something new on the model.

the armor is mean't to look dirty and thanks to all.

not sure whether to stick with the dragons or not.

they have not arrived but my dad's card has not been charged.....

should I just use valks?

Yeah I always seem to throw out batch painting.

I will try to write out a scheme and just use that.

As for the dragons I don't know what happened there as they have not arrived but my dad's card has not been charged.

I may use valkyries now but they are more expensive.

I just think that the dragons will need alot of work and may not work out....
