Attached are some pictures of my Ultramarines Army...
Just in terms of painting style, I typically use an extreme highlight vs. a blend...I think it comes out sharper on the tables, although it may look odd in the photos... Anyway questions feel free to ask

Sweet Ultraimarines, despite some of the crap they get about being GW poster boys. I also like alot of the conversion work you've done. Some subtle, some not so much, but I like it.
Could you better describe this "extreme highlight vs. blend" painting style you mentioned? It comes out very bright and crisp, and would love to hear it.

I agree with Ronin , it would be great to get this extreme highlight vs. blend style on the table . You could possibly even make it a toutorial ?

Not a big fan of the Ultramarines normally but you have painted them beautifully and done them justice. It would be a pleasure to play against such a well painted army. Great stuff!

Thanks for the comments and encouragement -
in terms of extreme highlighting vs. blending:
From my understanding at least, blending is a more gradual blend up from a darker color to a lighter color, where extreme highlighting is a more abrupt transition.
E.g. in my case i use UM blue, then a mix of 2:1 UM Blue:White then a 1:2 UM Blue:White; If I were blending, i would more gradually work the color out to the final highlight by adjusting the ratios (i.e. not use so much white in the blend) a bit and not ending on such a bright one.
I actually do use blending on the red capes/loin cloths...start with Scab red base, then go over everything with red gore, leaving deepest recesses (if there); then 2:1 Red Gore:Blood Red, then 1:2 Red Gore:Blood red then a straight blood red...
In terms of faces, my friend Exocorp has a great tutorial on painting them.
I can go ahead and give a tutorial on the next model i paint up and will post...
Again, thanks everybody.

Slowly but surely I have been working on the army - a bit tough with work and all.... Below are: Completed Tactical Squad and 6/10 completed Stearn Guard Squad:
Re: Stearn Guard - I actually liked the idea from last addition of the tyranid hunters, so wanted to them my vanguards off of them...as such, all of these are slightly converted normal plastic marines - using some of the combi weapons from the metal minis and some from commander bits...also used tyranid bits where appropriate... Bases are not done yet, but is fine for here....
Next up will be finishing the squad, then Rhino and a Drop pod....

Though a jump pack/thunder hammer combo often looks ludicrous, I think you've succeeded in making that Vanguard sergeant look awesome; he's convincingly dynamic, not to mention badass in a way only Space Marines can pull off. Your painting style is well suited to the Ultramarines, as well; the whole army is a pleasure to look at.

Very nice paintwork. Common army but the fact this ones well modeled and painted more than makes up for it. I particularly like the contrast the red colors provide with the blue. Breaks up the monotony without making the color scheme look too busy.

Here are some new addition(s) - Basically, I finished my Predator Tank...I had two sets of sponsons and turrets (think i bought two tanks and used the second as a Rhino) so magnetized the sponsons so I could switch the tank from an Annihilator to a Destructor (or mix however)...Since last post i also finished two more Stearnguards, but will post when i finish the last two and have my full squad...
...anyway, it has taken me far too long to paint this tank..hehe..

Wow Man, Great work.
Have to admit, for the longest time I wasn't a fan of the Ultramarines but after reading some Graham McNeil and other assorted black library books the little emperor lovers began to grow on me.
Great Paint job! And i think you really honored the clean, noble, close-combat tendencies of the
Ultramarines with your Vanguard and assault squads.
While the Ultramarines won't roar in your face and rip your throat out like a Space Wolf, they still have the grit and skill at swordplay to dice up any foe. You definitely brought this usually unmentioned character of the Ultramarines to the fore.
The scouts are great too!
For the Emperor!

Also including a captain i made - supposed to be 4th company captain and use Crimson Fist Special Character rules...Used Commander Legs and Torso - Left Shoulder is from Old Marneus model, storm bolter is modified from Terminator storm bolter - head is chaos champion head, wings from dark angels sprue, back back from commander...rest is green stuff - loin cloth, cape and bolt ammo chain. Demonslayer82 -Thanks for the compliments. The army is actually still a WIP.
My vision for the completed army - and it is big and will take a lot of time but....
Complete 2nd company - with 2 dreadnoughts - almost there
Thunderhawk Gunship - will buy later on
4th Company support - will be the captain you see, plus 2 squads with melta, multi sgt with combi melta and PFin drop pod
3rd Company support - will be Captain on Bike with command squad, PF and Storm Shields (have them but not painted); 1-2 full bike squads and an attack bike squad
1st Compan - 2-3 terminator squads (have 1.5 painted); 1 assualt termis with lightning claws; 3 with thunder hammer SS; 1 vangaurd no jump packs; 1 vangaurd with jump packs 2-3 stearngaurds
Tank Support: 2 LR - (painting 1) 1 LR Crusader (have need to assemble), One prometheous (the flame storm cannon one), one Las cannon apoc LR; 3 vindicators (have all, need to paint 2), 1 Predator, 3 whirlwinds, 3 iron clads, 1-2 more dreadnoughts - Master of the forge (total of 6-9 drop pods)

Interesting army composition for the WIP stuff I have one piece of advice dont over extend yourself with loads of massively fancy models get your rank and file and then command elements done and then go for the massive Forgeworld pieces etc etc.
@Lukus 83 Yea man I understand that feeling entirely when I used to heavily play back in 2006-2007 I used to cringe at some of the time put into pieces on my opponents side of the table.

Have been working on multiple models at one time, so it has taken me some time to complete anything. However, I have recently completed the model I am going to be using for Pedro Kantor - I will basically stand him in for the 4th Company Captain - although I play 2nd company, in the future, i will likely paint up one or 2 tac squads in 4th company colors - besides, captains from other companies may command units from other companies.
I did previously post the kantor model i made - it is the most i worked with green stuff - the bolt gun feed was the most difficult part, but i think it came out ok - if i was a professional it probably would have come out better....
Additionally, I have completed my first assault terminator squad - this one has all thunder hammers and storm shields - i still have a lot of terminators to paint and will get to them...
The camera's flash is a bit much - the effect on the models just makes them a little brighter than they would be on the table...

Have done some painting recently - mostly on transports, which I was lacking a bit. Below are my two New Rhinos, as well as the model I use for Vulkan. I also converted some Razorback turrets so my two rhinos can double for razorbacks as well if needed.
Also, just to give some background: I know many people play ultramarines as their "first" army; this is in fact my 7th or 8th...going from BA, to Eldar, to Crimson Fists, Tau, Grey Knights, Tyranids Necrons. I chose Ultramarines primarily for how they look after painted - i basically painted a test model and liked it so much i wanted to play the army - Also, "vanilla" marines in my opinion have some thigh highest variance in terms of playability - a bike army, speeder army, foot slogging army, jump packs, etc. etc. - you can use almost any play style - this gives a lot of variance to the owner of the army - I always tend to get bored with army play style, so being able to always switch is really something that attracts me to Vanilla marines.
Anyway, here are the most recent additions

Sword for the Tertius Sgt is from the Tomb Kings Fantasy set. I think it is the Inubus Sword (could be wrong) - it was a while ago and i forgot.
@Vasarto - I would say all you really need to be a painter for 40k is patience and the paints (and brushes). I wouldn't say it takes a lot of skill, although some people on here really are "Painters" - and there stuff is amazing. But each guy of mine takes about 5-6 hours to paint... just because it takes time, and I have a lot of different paints...once you learn the sequence for painting the end color, it is simply just applying them onto the models.

Just finished two guys, which will eventually be a squad of 10. These will be my vanguard veterans with jump packs. Not much conversions, here
Am using the new Blood Angels Honor Guard (??) models. I think they are great and look much more "Heroic" than the GW vanguard vet models. + they are plastic which is nicer and cheaper than the GW vanguard vet models. Just had to shave off most of the blood angels iconography, some of the generic ones are okay. In any case, i think these models are very fitting of the "Angels of Death" nickname space marines get. I hope you all like them as much as I like painting them...will probably take me a while to finish the 10, so will post again when done with the squad.
BTW - The way I do my power weapons are as seen in the sword here (so usually no confusion in the game with models carrying hand weapons). The Relic Blad the sgt is carrying is "turned off" - I just didn't know how to give it a "power weapon" type look as the blade area is quite small.
Thanks btw for all the positive comments. Automatically Appended Next Post: BTW - weapons layout on the vanguard is Sgt with Relic blade and storm shield, power weapon and pistol on veteran (X3 - although 1 also with storm shield) and Thunder Hammer storm shield. The other 5 guys have not decided, but will likely be more standard as all power weapons is too expensive in a squad.
Shield on sgt is from Spacewolves

Overall, very happy with the way they came out and although they are not the best in terms of playability - although i have had hit&miss success with them - the Sanguinary Guard models converted up to Vanguard are probably my favorite looking models in my army...
So, here is the squad - Sgt with Relic Blade & Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer Storm Shield, 2x power weapon BP, 1 chain sword and Storm Shield... I am working on a five man stearnguard using the FW resin MK II armor and will post when done...

Below are the first couple of steps for me painting my terminators - i am doing 8 at once (I don't normally do this many models at one time) - so it should be a bit slow...
I hope that this helps - for other great ideas please see Exocorps (faces) posts as well as Smurfmaster (UM Symbol on shoulders)
Colors I have used so far: Black; Ultramarines Blue; Scorched Brown; Codex Grey (you will see in Tips that these are the base colors so far)
I tend to put all the base colors on first - that way i can kind of see how the model will look in terms of colors...the order in which i do things can be changed based on preference
...
Tips/ Methods:
You will notice that i "black line" the models where there are joints, or recesses. There are multiple methods of doing this, including using a wash/ink, or one that i would like to do but just can't is to use an ink pen from Michaels and go back over the model literally filling all the spaces. The method i use is the slowest
For White: Not seen yet, but I paint white no my models in two ways
1) Codex Grey, Fortress Grey (or mix down with white), 50:50 Fortress Grey White, White - this is how my terminator head and elite heads are done if you look at previous pictures
2) Shadow Grey, Space Wolves Grey, White - this gives the white a bluish tint - this is used on eagles, and wings of my vanguard vets
For gold: Bronze; Devlin mud wash, Gold (but keep recesses or 'dark' areas with wash, 50:50 gold with mithril silver for highlights
Blue: Ultramiarines Blue - Highlighted with 66:33 UM Blue white, 33:66 UM Blue:white
Leather (not on this model): 50:50 Scorched Brown: Black, Scorched Brown (leave recesses dark), highlight with Bestial Brown
Base - Scorched Brown, bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather.

Beautiful paint jobs, and awesome conversions, thanks for the tutorial as well, will have to try those techniques next time I paint.

I'm happy to say that your landspeeder conversion on page one was the reason I ended up looking at dakka for my WH40K fix, while I havent got around to converting a landspeeder yet I plan on "using" your side shields for the ones I will make.
Can't wait to see what you can do with a GK force as well.

I'm surprised I am just now discovering this thread. Some stellar work here. One comment though, the freehand on Vulcan appears a bit more sloppy than your other work. Any plans to touch that up?

Will likely touch up Vulkan when I get the time (his banner yeah?). It didn't come out how i wanted it, but I am not actually all that good at freehand...many more people on Dakka are very talented at it.
Will try to get to him when I have time...thanks all for looking, will try and post next steps on the terminators tomorrow or friday

It has been about 3 months plus since I updated this - Sorry all, I had a baby recently and he has taken up a lot of my time - wife and child are back in her home town for the last few weeks so I have had some time to paint...
I changed the format a bit - adding text etc into the picture...i think that is easier to follow. If anybody has problems viewing the pics and would like to see a better version, please PM me your email and i can email you a pdf.
I did not take a photo of each step, but i think the pictures do a good job at explaining what i have done since the last bit photo...it is mostly a lot of small areas to be painted so it is faster this way. Also note that I am painting 8 terminators at a time (normally i don't do this, i normally paint one at a time) Automatically Appended Next Post: One note: Just as I hope that this blog can help others paint their models, I would like to say that each day I am also learning.
I would like to thank Smurfmaster for putting up on his blog how he paints the Ultramarines Chapter Symbol, I used his technique on these terminators.
His thread is here
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/357704.page
Thanks again and I hope everybody enjoys and I hope the blog helps.
I am basically on the highlighting stage, which actually takes a lot of time, especially the blue...
Next steps:
- highlight red on sgt. and other red areas (e.g, shoulder shield on one guy
- add text to purity seals, wash them
- add grey to cables, back of knees etc
- highlight metal parts (the ones that are BG Metal Black mix
- 1st blue highlight
- 2nd blue highlight
- any details missed
Then do all of their shields (7 of them - one guy has attached already)
Then the sgts. Banner

So, Finally finished the 8 Thunderhammer terminators. Sorry for the break from before...
Generally, I would say my painting style is quite slow...it takes about 8 hours for one guy...plus breaks etc. I could probably have done them all in a couple weeks if i spent a few hours on them each night.
Regardless, hope you enjoyed the tutorial. If there are any questions about these guys or any other of my models just send me a PM or post on this thread... Automatically Appended Next Post: One final note - the red (e.g. sgt. helmet) has a 2 stage highlight as well - 1:1 Blazing orange and Blood Red and then Blazing Orange...
I think that covers it all Cheers guys...
Next project - 2 more vindicators, Land Raider Crusader and Whirlwind. I will also try and get a picture of the entire army up here within a week or so...

Those are some well painted Termies you have there. Great job!
I like your shade of blue it's very original. It's not as dark as most other Ultramarines but it looks great.

Been working on my Second Stearnguard squad. Currently Sgt is done, 5 guys with combi meltas and 1 with a combi flamer. In the end there will be 10 guys, 5 combi meltas, 4 combi flamers and 1 bolter....
Most of the squad are the Forgeworld Resin model - I must say I am very impressed with them. I hope the pictures and painting do them justice.
Right now the base on half are finished - waiting for glue to dry but will finish up tomorrow - I couldn't wait to post the pics.

Like these Ultras. What head is on the Sgt? It looks great with the Vet stripe

Post by: mray01
Thanks All -
One point about the blue - it is just Ultra Marines blue highlighted out...I think they are slightly darker (although not too much) in real life.
Regarding the head on the sgt - assuming you mean the most recent one - I am actually not sure which head that is. It likely came from either the black templar set or the dark angels set.
Cheers all...

I really like your Sternguard, your combi-meltas are great. I also like the addition of the FW armour it makes them really look like veterans. The paint job is really good too. @Briancj- If mray01 is not interested in the shoulder pads I might be interested in them. I'll send you a PM.

A couple of updates -
- I finished my second stearnguard squad using mostly forgeworld models.
- Refinished some of my tactical marines, changing sholder pads out and trying to make their weapons more in line with current codex -= no photo
- replaced shoulder pads on the 2nd devestator squad to chevron pads - the HB's still have the old explosion pad pained on but will repaint them later - i never use the HBs anyway - no photo
- Some tactical marines finished, including a melta gunner and missile launcher. - no photo (yet)
Will be working on some more vehicles and finishing up the tac squadsas soon as i can.

So, one of the things I always wanted to do was create a heavily converted Marneus Calgar Land Raider. Attached are some photos:
- I want to thank all of those before me who have done this similar project as there were some inspiring ideas
- Unfortunately my skills with plasticard are quite limited and I am not 100% happy with the way some areas turned out.... hopefully painting the model will help cover up some of the bad areas
- not sure about the top front hatch...not sure if you all can see it - If any ideas regarding the top of the front hatch please let me know
- I figure the model is about 85% done. I have been working on her for about 2 weeks now
Would really appreciate any potential ideas...was thinking of using a Havoc Launcher as a Hunter Killer Missile. Will likely add a multi melta as well.
and yes, Suicide Door Pattern - I just like the way the regular land raider looks with the Lascannons mounted in the rear...
