Xan´s Skaven Army: Oct. 25th, Screaming Bell! (Page 4) @ 2009/11/08 15:35:47

Post by: Xanthos

So, just a smallish note here, I´ve had mixed feelings about the metal Poison Wind Globadiers for a long time. And when I saw the new models being released I knew that I couldn´t bring myself to field them with such ugly old models as those globadiers.

So I decided to see what a little greenstuff could do, when applied to the (just) outdated clanrats. I´ve chosen the ones with the cloth collar, since they seemed best suited for the job. And I should say right now, that these are not done in any way. Their tanks are the shape and size I want, but need loads of detail. The only thing that´s pretty much done, is the mask.

This is a first for me, so I´l lbe happy to take aboard suggestions and ideas for where to go with them. Oh yeah, The masks take me about an hour to do, I´ve done four rats to this stage so far, and I´m aiming to do at least ten of these, hopefully a full 15 rat unit.. Monday night sculpting at the FLGS till christmas I guess.

And now, so you can actually comment on something, piccies!

Hey, thanks guys. I´ll be working on these tomorrow night again, so hopefully I´ll have something for you after that.

I´m currently drawing up some sketches for a globe mortar. Not sure if they´re worth it, but I can´t very well make my own Globadiers and not have a mortar, right?

Looks very good, just scratch/scuplt some runes onto the tanks etc and your done!

Btw as your using the cloth hooded ones, It kind of reminds me of something like either the yuri initiates from Red Alert 2, or the wastehound helmets from fallout 3

Hey Aurelion, thanks. Got my hands (paws?) on some stormvermin yesterday, and they are absolutely stunning models!

I´ve still got a ways to go with this, but I just might be bringing home a Warhammer army this christmas...

The rats got some more work last night, but have ended up in my FLGS´s cabinets for a bit, they needed some WIP greenstuff work to show off. No worries, I need to start on the next set anyways...

Leigen Zero: I did some runes and riveting on the tanks last night, nothing fancy, just a skryre rune on one, and the basic horned rat symbol on another. And yeah, they do have a bit of Yuri´s acolytes to them...

Great news about the Skaven army. I am pretty sure we can arrange some games of fantasy (or 40 k or necromunda or BFG )

Looking forward to seeing more WIP's of your army

I´ll try to oblige some time this weeek. Not too much to show yet, still in the stage where I´m testing color schemes and such.

I do have one unit of clanrats done, and another started. I´ll need to model up at least one globe mortar as well, those things look good as well, plus they´ll go well with the globadiers!

Okay, the promised update is here!

I´ve taken snaps of all the skaven I´m working on at the moment, bar the globadiers, since these are still at the store...

Firsty, there are the clanrats. Of these, I have a finished unit of 40, and a unit that´s far from done, also 40 strong. These guys are the ones I´m working on when I feel like it. Paint a few up now and then type of thing.

The Clanrats have a banner design that I saw in the second edition Warhammer rulebook. It was that book which first inspired me to go with skaven, and I thought I just had to work it in to the army somehow.

The Jezzails are next. If these weren´t so expensive I´d always use a maxed out unit... I´ve got three being painted up, two more on the way.

And of course, the ratling gun. A bit of an impulse buy when I got it, it just looked too cool.

Most importantly for me at the moment, is this first block of 20 Storm Vermin. These guys look incredibly cool, and are so much bigger than the clanrats. I cano nly agree with others on the board, who have commented that their shields have nowhere to go, but I´ll try to spread some around the unit, for the look of the thing.

I decided that these guys were too cool to leave unaltered, so I had a go at making one of them a bit more "Skryre´esque". He´s gotten an eye augmentation, a Warlock Upgraded weapon and his shield has had runes of Skryre added aswell. I may do more, or just drop other things around the unit, to hint at their ties with the Warlock Clan.

Finally, the Warlock that´s been sitting on my desk for a year or more, which is now getting to closer to finished-ness. Mostly included him to show the colors that I´m going for.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Yeah Aurelion, going for a definate Skryre feel to this army.

I´m looking forward to the release of the Screaming Bell, I´m gonna try to see if I can steampunk that up as well.

Darth Bob, thanks, the GS work is a lot easier now that I have proper tools.

I´m trying to make a really steampunk´ish army, I´ve been inspired by the new look of the Doomwheel to go really techy and dark.

I got some more GS work done today, finished up the work on the Warlord model today, I may add some techy bits to his shield, but not sure..

I want to represent their "Technology = Magic" concept as much as I can, thusly the cabling, and this is also why I´m considering techifying his shield.

@empchild: Thanks man, this army is more lighthearted thatn my Krieg stuff, which is a nice diversion for me. I´m really gonna go to town with conversions and such, I want a sniper Warlock, at least one Globe mortar, and all kinds of stuff like that.

@Flashman: Yeah, the conversion turned out better than I dared hope, it got quite a few comments at the FLGS today as well. I´m still considering putting my warlord on a Litter, this would mean more conversion fun, but I want to keep the techy look and feel of the force.

@grisnag: Thanks man! Good to see some more people from the Isles in these forums.

@Pherion: Thank you, I was positively surprised at the level of detail on the new models, but I´m still having doubts about the new clanrats...
I really feel like I´m making headway with GS these days. Rivets have been added to two Globadiers, and one has had runes added. They´re just so tiny! I mean, for some stuff I´ve used plasticard and an .8mm holepunch, but those are too big for this!

So it takes time.

Sorry, no photo update tonight, didn´t bring my camera to the store... I´ll try and get down there tomorrow, may bring the camera then.

Youre welcome! Where did you get the hole punch? Its a great idea, and I'll have to get one if I decide to do some converting (which I probably will soon)

I got the hole punch at a crafts store here, a place that specializes in leather and tools for leather, they had all different sorts of sizes and I grabbed the smallest they had.

When you start doing conversions I hope you´ll show us the pictures as well.

So, after a bit of a long wait, here´s a small update on the army. I´ve gotten some small games (1500Pts) done, had a draw and a loss so far, but both were against experienced players, so I´m okay with it.

I´ve almost assembled my Doomwheel. I´ve done some conversion work on it, mainly some more sensible cabling for the zappers and some suspension for the warlocks cage.

I´m working on a boiler and some stuff for the back of the wheel, will use it instead of the guy steering/pumping at the back, since I don´t much care for him.

Oh, and now there are seven Globadiers, four finished and three on the way. Closing on the halfway mark...

Pictures soon. I promise.

Xan´s Skaven Army: Oct. 25th, Screaming Bell! (Page 4) @ 2009/11/30 22:05:10

Post by: Xanthos

Here´s the promised Picture Update. As I said I´ve been working on changing the design, adding a boiler and such. I changed the blades on the front, thought it seemed silly that all six of them would be identical. The cabling for the lightning guns has been replaced as well, with GS cabling.

Other than this, some minor things have been changed, trhe boiler is still very WIP. Rivets, chimney cone and stuff still to come.

I´m still working on my remake of the globadiers. Four of the little blighters are complete, but they take a lot of time to make...

The Jezzails are about 90% completed, need to finish the horned rat symbol on the leader. Oh, and the last two are still on the way, gahh!

The ratling gun that will accompany my clanrat units is also 90% finished. It still needs a bit of work on the basing. These guys are great, having destroyed a charging unit of Squig Hoppers in a firing frenzy. Brrraaaaaaatatatatat!

And finally, a picture of the next skaven unit. A 40 strong pack of slaves. So far they´ve been undercoated and basecoated. Will try to see if I can finish them to gaming quality tomorrow.

Post by: Xanthos

Okay then. Got some more work done today, including starting on my very own Poisoned Wind Mortar. Now I was thinking: What would skaven use to lob big gas globes across the field of battle? It would have to be lightweight to move and fire. It would have to have some kind of force to propel the globes. And it would most likely be copied from other races. So, having recently played against a goblin army with a doom diver, I figured, why not just steal the giant slingshot concept, and improve upon it?

And with that, I started making this contraption, namely the Globe lobber. As you can see it still needs some work, but I think it could work. Both rats will have gasmasks, the front one will have his head tucked as low as he can, hoping not to be shot in the back.

Xan´s Skaven Army: Oct. 25th, Screaming Bell! (Page 4) @ 2009/12/02 10:10:42

Post by: Xanthos

Well, it seems like I´m talking to myself these days...

Anyways, here´s an update. I´ve gotten more work done on the Globe Mortar. The crew are shaping up, still need to do gas masks for them, and finish their robes. Also need to figure out what to do for air tanks.

I think the poses work, the front guy leaning into the sling, and the rear guy hauling on the slingshot.

The left arm of the shooter has a hole at the elbow. I´m trying to make them as rough as I can, again, this is very much a work in progress, so all comments and criticism are welcomed.

Also, I made a couple of banner poles for objective markers. Not sure what they´ll be used for, but I wanted to make something different.

The Banner pole is a piece of aluminum pipe, and slots into a slightly larger piece of pipe in the base.

As ever, comments, ideas and criticism is gladly taken aboard.

Oh, Xanthos! How you frustrate me with how cool your conversions are!

That said, I like your take on the Poison Wind Mortar. Personally, I was just planning on taking a plastic IG mortar, using some wire to look like rope, and tying/harnessing it to the back of a Clan Rat. Adding the GS gasmasks, though, is definitely thematic. Have you found a decent way to do it quickly yet? And if so, can you write up a quick tutorial on it? It'd be a big help for us Skryre fans out here.

Hey guys, thanks a lot.

@Death By Monkeys: Heheh, I try.

I´ve seen quite a few IG mortar conversions, some okay, others look like "a mortar next to rats"... The gasmasks were tough at first, but I´ve got it down to four steps now. I´ll try making a tutorial at some point, either as part of this blog, or on it´s own. I wouldn´t say I make them that wuickly, but way better than at first.

I badly want to see if I can do something with new-style clanrats. So far I´ve put off buying them, since I´m worried that they´ll be too rigidly posed, but I think I´ll give it a whirl soon.

I got a little more done on the team, the gasmask on the helper guy is almost done, needs hoses and eyepieces. Also got quite far on their robes today, tomorrow the hunt for globes begins!

Two shots of the weapon team at their current stage. Still need to figure out where their air tanks and ammo is going to fit.

And two closeups, showing the helper more clearly. The GS work is kinda roug at this close range, but remember, this is waaaay larger than the actual model.

Hey, thanks! I can only tell you what I tell everyone who says that: The tools make the difference. I swear by my colour shapers.

These skaven are my first real GS work, I´ve done modifications on models before, most notably the space suits in my =I=Munda thread, but really, these tools rock!

Anyways, that aside, I almost got the forty man unit done today. It just needs rust on weapons and armour, basing and finishing touches! Not too bad, considering that I started them on monday...

No pictures tonight, too tired and I have a looong day tomorrow.

Oh, good danish too.

if you want a good method for rust thats nice and easy, after you have the blades done in metalics, give it a good going over with tin bitz as a dry brush, then a lighter drybrush with firey orange. if you can make it out, the gnobler in the front row furthest to the right. for an example.

Ooh, that´s very nice actually, thanks for the tip!

I´m using a method which goes from Scorched brown, through blood red and ends up with Foundation Orange. Over this I use some light streaks of Boltgun Metal.

It comes out nice as well, but takes more time to do.

I absolutely love your mortar! That is such a great idea. My only comments are that the hole on the elbow looks very clean, as if the shirt is made out of some sort of clay... Hehe, nah, you get what I mean. It is a very clean cut in fabric that is then bent. If it was caused by wear and tear, why is it so clean? If it was caused by weapon damage, why is it on the elbow? I mean it looks great, completely on par with, if not better than, the old clanrat models and this is just nitpicking, but still.

My other comment is that if I were to make the mortar, I would cross the spears at the base so that you've got a symbol of the horned rat. I mean... you can't go wrong if the horned rat itself is spitting balls of poisonous gas at the enemy, right?

Xan´s Skaven Army: Oct. 25th, Screaming Bell! (Page 4) @ 2009/12/04 14:38:15

Post by: Xanthos

Hey Gerbrith, thanks a lot for your thoughts, always appreciated.

The hole on the elbow was a kind of test, as much a "can I do this?" as anything.. But yeah, I see what you mean.

As for the symbol of the horned rat, I tried crossing the spears at the base at first, for that very reason. But it ended up looking too rickety and unstable. And not in a good skaven-y way... :S

Maybe I´ll give it s a shot again, but if I do, I´ll need to shave the spears down quite a bit, to somehow fool the eyes into thinking it isn´t as crooked.

Edit: Elbow, not shoulder..... Darn those pesky biology lessons...

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, good to know that I´m doing something right.

The first globe mortar is fast approaching finished-ness. I still need to do some basic webbing on the firer, and get the ammunition to look more skaven-y, but it´s close now.

I just started on four more globe mortars, two of them are a commision build, and two for my own army. Not too much to show yet, only basic construction and posing of the plastics.

I´ll be making two more teams in pretty much the same pose as the first one. The other two will be bigger variations, one of them will be on the move, with one skaven holding the sling and pointing, the other one lugging the ammunition around.

Also, I got rust onto half of the big unit last night, will (hopefully) get the other half done tonight. Getting closer....
In celebration of almost being done with them, I started basecoating the first 20 of my stormvermin, who will be next up after the clanrats.
They´ll probably take a bit longer to paint, since I want them to be nicer looking than the clanrats/slaves.

No picures today, (sorry). I´m off to work again in a few minutes, but I´ll try and take some snaps when I get home tonight. We´ll see.

So, I think that´s all for now, see you guys later!

Hey Aurelion, thanks a lot. I´m not sure if the entire horde is coming up north, or only selected parts. I will bring at least some of it though, as well as other fun stuff.

I´ve had a horribly busy weekend, but got some stuff done tonight. I´ve put masks on a further three rats for the catapults, and have started on some more globadiers as well, for the same client who will be receiving the mortars. Also found a good colour combo for skaven teeth and nails, so I´m applying that all over the army.

Oh, and the weather was good earlier so I got some stormvermin base coated.

And finally, I´ve started work on a war litter for my Warlord, so he can have an imposing position on the battlefield.

Hey all, picture update tonight! I´m still having trouble with the camera, but I got some pictures to work out okay... First up is the further work on two more Globe Mortars. These have had masks added, and some work on their robes. I´m trying to do these in parts at first, which makes it easier for me to sculpt, and will make them easier to paint as well.

The masks are the same style as the rest of my stuff, but I feel that I´m getting more comfortable with sculpting them. The robes also seem to be coming out better and better.

The next few images are of the upcoming warlitter for my Warlord. He´ll be getting a large shield to stand on, triangular of course, but I still need to find his shield bearers. The dwarf players at the FLGS should love this...

And finally, I also got some painting done on the Stormvermin that will be accompanying the Warlord. I´ve gone with a very aged bronze look, it´s not quite there yet, but I´m fairly happy with how it looks.

The shield is great. Awesome conversions all around. The poses for the sling shot are spot on. I think the one in the back could use a bit less of a head though... that is, cut off a bit more of the back of his head.

That being said, it looks like you did something like that, in the second set of pics of those two, but I couldn't tell for sure.

Thanks guys, I´m finding that waiting for GS to set is actually worse than looking at paint drying..... So even though I´m working on lots of different models, it still mean loads of "downtime" while waiting.

As far as painting goes, I got the first seven Stormvermin to tabletop standard now, working on the second set of seven now. The sculpts GW made for them are really nice, and make even a fast paintjob look quite good.

Since the stage they were at when I took the photo´s, the armor has gotten highlights, and the fur has gotten a highlight as well. It really makes them look a lot better, so I think when I get the bases done, and some highlights on their robes, I´ll be happy with them.

My camera is still being weird.... :S

Hey Xan your GS skills are amazing! You've just warrented me a sale on some of those paint shapers!

As for waiting for it to dry, I'm no expert on GS but this is what i do know.

More Yellow putty= Dries softer, easy to stretch and mould. Dries slower.

More Blue Putty= Dries harder, not so easy to stretch but good for things like flames. Dries much faster.

Keep up the good work mate!

Hey all, I´m back for one more picture update before Christmas. Work has been killing me, so I haven´t done as much with these guys as I´d wish.

But I did manage to get the first Mortar team done, and work is going apace on the next two.
I´ve been thinking about how to do the breathing apparatus for the front rat in the teams, and ended up linking him to the rear guy´s tanks.

This way the front guy won´t stick up as high, and is in less danger of having the globe break on his back.

There are a few places where the GS still looks a little rough, I´ll be working on that over Christmas.

In this image, the closeup really shows the lacing on the mask. I´m happy with how consistent it is starting to look.

The last two teams aren´t quite done yet, and I need to redo the tops on the sling of the third one. It didn´t look like I wanted it to, so It´s gonna be take two for that.

You may see what I´m talking about here. The tops don´t look like steel at all, they look wobbly and weird. So off they go. Other than that, these are closing in on finished´ness.

Finally, here´s a closeup of the second team. These guys need very little work, just GS on the arms of the rear guy, the sling itself, minor detail work and they´ll be ready to lock and load!

So, feel free to comment, good or bad, that´s the best way for me to improve.

I´ll be travelling home tomorrow for christmas, two whole weeks of eating and doing nothing! Yay! Well, that is.... Nothing but hang out with friends, finish these sculpts, play loads of boardgames, and celebrate my birthday at the end of the year. Should be fun!

@Bloodthirster: Thanks a lot for the kind words. If/when you get the shapers, I´d recommend the black tipped ones, they´re called "Extra Firm" and are made for sculpting. The others are fine too, but black is the best.

As for the putty ratios, yup, that´s what I do too, but it still takes hours....

Wow, your greenstuff work is fantastic. You've created some really characterful models. It's also suitably Christmasy with the red metalic ball. I imagine your skaven are off to enjoy a glass of port and a mince pie after the battle

Great sculpting Xan, the quality of your work has really come on leaps and bounds. Great theme as always and superb execution.

One thing I would say is watch out for some of those mould and seam lines though. They detract from otherwise great work.

Cheers,

Dante

Hey CMDante, yeah the mould and seam lines are my great enemy these days... Need to find a better way to gap those edges...

Thanks for the comments, especially the critique is needed. Too often we are blinded to the problems with our own work.

Lol, tell me about it!

I find milliput good for filling reasonable seam lines etc. Tamayia also make a good plastic filled which dries quick but usually needs sanding smooth after with some 1200 wet dry paper.

Both could be a good solution to seam lines.

Cheers,

Dante

*slaps forehead* I can't believe I forgot to tell you about how I usually dry green stuff. It dries faster in warm places, so sticking it about 20 cm away from a light bulb will allow it to set in about 15 minutes. Protocon discovered it, and I've been using it on my experimental head sculpts. Works like a charm, though I'm not certain how it would affect gray or brown stuff, and of course you have to be careful that it isn't too warm, since that would damage the model.

I have been struggling with some of the other conversions of Poisoned Wind Mortars that I have seen. They all look really bad or just out of place for the most part. I also have trouble with the idea behind how one could use a blasting powder to propel a glass ball that is intended to shatter on impact without it exploding in their faces when the blasting powder goes off.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? Would you feel terribly violated if I make my Poisoned Wind Mortars in a similar fashion?

Hey guys. Sorry for the lack of updates recently, however real life has sucked recently and has taken a lot of my time...

Most importantly, two of my very best friends were run down by a van a week or so ago. Broad daylight, walking on a sidewalk.. Both survived, which is amazing, but one of them will have a very lengthy recuperation, and the other was quite badly hurt as well.

Most random event ever in my life.

Anyways, I did get some fun stuff done over christmas, and will post pictures one of these days. Amongst it is a Doom Flayer, and I finished two of the globe mortars, as well as my warlord on warlitter.

Xanthos out (for now).

Hey guys. It´s update time!

First off, both of my friends who were run down, have been released from the hospital. One of them is still very weak, but is on the road to recovery, and the other is walking around almost as if nothing had happened. Not very relevant to this blog, but it has been taking up a lot of my time, so that´s that.

Anyways, on to more exciting stuff! Two globe mortars have now reached the "finished" mark. Had to tear the arms off the third one again, they weren´t looking right. They were used in a mini-tourney last saturday, and were the only piece of my army to outperform. Well, the slaves did well too, but other than that my abysmal dice rolling meant that all my plans went to Hades.

(As an example, in a total of eleven shots fired in three matches, the lightning cannon had seven misfires! Seven! Argh.....)

Just wanted to get these uploaded for you guys, and especially for the customer who will be getting them.

That´s all for now, hope to have more updates soon.

Hey wow, thanks a lot for all the support! I got some photos of the Doomflayer for you today.

These aren´t the best shots ever, and sadly I never took WIP shots, since it was a "spur of the moment" thing.

But the bits that I used were all junk bits from my bits box.
Some old skaven bits, some new ones.

There´s a piece from a 40K Chaos vehicle upgrade sprue, and a pair of WH Chaos maces as well...

The platform is plasticard with GS on top, made to look like wood.

And the driver is an oldschool clanrat, with Stormvermin head.

Keep in mind now, this model is in no way finished, painting is still very much in progress.

The Doomflayer's aged bronze is the same as on the drivers helmet, so has that guy been driving that around for his whole life? Lucky rat. Anyway I love what you've done, especially the GS work, at which I suck.

Thanks guys. The Flayer got a good reception at the games store as well, and at one point he actually mangled a unit of ogres mostly by himself!

And yup, it does have a wheel barrow feel to it, some people commented on this also at the store, but I´m not sure whether that´s a bad thing...

@Aurelion: Not sure if the rats are coming this summer, it rather depends on what kind of gaming I end up having time for... With a baby on the way this June things may get hectic at that time....

@Tim the Biovore: Heheh, I´m going with aged bronze on all the fancy stuff.

The Stormvermin have it on their wargear as well. I figure that the rats get replaced, but the gear is recycled.

Since this guy will be hanging out with the Stormvermin I felt he needed to have similar gear, and the Flayer even has the same icon as the Stormvermin banner.

Hey all, mini update for you.

For some reason it seems that Dakka refuses direct picture upload from me today, so we´re taking the long road, and actually adding code to the post... Sigh.

Anyways, here are some shots of two Globadiers, who will, pending customer acceptance, be going on a trip soon.

The first one has an issue with the sleeve on his throwing arm. It´s a bit too neat and tidy, so I´ll be adding volume to it, and a hole or two. Other than that they´re done.

The First Globadier. As you can see, the top of the sleeve is way too neat. Just noticed this as I was unpacking him from the box again this morning.

A second shot, showing the back of his arm, and how the sleeve flows.

And a third shot. Showing his tank.

The second Globadier.

Second Globadier, his hand weapon is a tail weapon! Sneaky....

And his back.

Well, it´s been a while since I updated this blog, but there´s finally something new to show you guys. One of the things that I´ve been chiseling away at for the past couple of months is a Screaming Bell for my Skaven.

It´s been a monstrous task, but I think I´m close to the finish line now. After a great talk with some of my favorite critics, I´ve found that they seem to be mostly okay with it. The one thing that may still change a bit is the rocky bits, which some thought were too "clean". But other than that, this is pretty much the finished article.

But enough rambling on, let´s have some pictures!

The bell in all it´s glory, Grey Seer perched on the bell screaming foul curses at the man-things!

A sideshot, this thing really IS huge.

The bell itself, seeping the vapors of skaven magic.

Closeup on the cauldron, with smoking Warpstone shards.

A better look at the smoke effects.

And a better view of the rust effects on the metal bits. I did a lot of weathering on both metal and wood parts.

The bell ringing ogre. I gave his skin a very thin satin varnish, to show that he´s working hard at tolling the mighty bell.

The Grey Seer himself. Madness gleaming in his eyes!

And lastly, a shot showing some of the glowing runes on the bell.

So, with this, I think I´m very close to having finished this dastardly construction, I don´t think I´ve ever spent so much time on tiny details, as I did with this beast.

As always, comments are welcomed, both good and bad.

@Hawkins: Thank you so much my friend, I´ve really tried to use every technique I could on this piece, to do it some justice. I think it´s one of the best Fantasy models out there, sooooo many details and points of interest.

@Vitruvian XVII: Heheh, it does have a hideous sort of beauty to it, doesn´t it?

The rust is an effect that I recently discovered. It´s basically a very very thin wash of Macharius Solar Orange (GW´s Foundation Orange). I applied it three-four times over all the rust bits. After that it was just cleanup work.
