We'll start with the Rune Priest, prior to his primer coat.
Next up is the Dreadnought. He's still missing his CC arm, which will be holding an incinerated Chaos Marine. Both the Rune Priest and the Dread are going to be 2 of my entries in the Golden Bolter comp over at the B&C.
This guy is the test model. I'm incorporating a large quantity of mk IV, V, and VI armors in the army, and I'm using something similar to the old RT artwork color scheme, with some meshing in of current markings and insignias. My Great Company symbol is the Golden Wolf from way back when.
And here's an army shot. I'm working on getting the first 1000 points together, and still need to assemble a drop pod and a long fang pack with a third wolfguard.
I'm still getting used to the lightbox I built, so the photos still leave something to be desired.
I'll be updating this with my progress, hopefully pretty frequently.
Thanks for looking!

Nice green stuff work on the rune priest.
Some things you might want to look into before priming is the alignment of the staff and the pose of the free arm. The staff head seems to be a bit crooked at the top and the free arms join to the body is looking a bit off.
The test guy is looking great, nice colors and the painted shoulder pad is ace.

Wow...there's no point in me entering that competition now. But I might still do, just for the experience.
Your wolfies will look awesome, but what are you going to do with their left shoulder pad?

I really dig the rune priest. The runes carved into the shoulder pad add a nice touch.

Post by: Beamo
@ Metsuri- Thanks for the CC. I checked and rechecked that staff head, but I'll take another look at it, because it does look a little off in the pic... it might be the angle of the shot though, as he's almost resting it against his shoulder.
@ s.j.m.- You should enter anyway! I've always been intimidated by some of the stuff that crops up in those comps, but the exp will be good, and they have random participation prizes this time around, as well.
Right now I'm not doing anything with the left pad. in the RT artwork (and minis) the Company/Chapter markings were on the right pad, with the left pad being studded. It makes more sense with my mk V and VI marines, but leaves me with a blank pad on my IV and VII marines, so it's still up in the air.

Test model's so dynamic... I love bolter-wielding Space Marines running!!!!
7620
Post by: Beamo
@ Grim - It wasn't too difficult actually; I took an exacto knife and sliced lightly to make my guide lines. then I took a scribing tool and scraped with that until I got the depth/width I wanted.
I'll probably try to do it some on the dread as well.
@ Yggdrasil- He was fun to make, and I wish I had made more initially. I've got plans for my mk V pack to have some runners, including a leaping MotW guy.

Running Space Marines for everyone!!! We should petition GW so that they include assault legs in all their sets!!
And indeed, nice take on the runes / glyphs, that's something I might be using in the future....
Thanks!

I am really digging the conversions, but on the test model I think the paint scheme you have chosen just kind of all 'blends' together. My suggestion is to add some stark contrasts.
Ideas. Not necessarily all of them combined:
- Black rim on base
- Make ground of base very dark or create some interest pieces on it that work with the grey armor
- Very bold yellow and black shoulderpads and kneepads (one knee on each marine)
- Single red or yellow stripe on helmet
- Black or red casing on bolter
Just some ideas,
Blackbone
7620
Post by: Beamo
I have had some second thoughts on the Bolter casing. Black might not be a bad idea.
The old art also calls for a yellow stripe on trooper helmets, which I had decided not to do. I might rethink that, so that the wolf isn't the only yellow on the model.
That might bring the model out more, while still keeping a more subdued feeling for the armor, which is what I was going for.
Thanks for the feedback

Here's an update, although it's not a whole lot.
The Rune Priest, primed, from a different angle
A Mk VI Grey Hunter in progress.
My Dreadnought primed. I rebuilt the legs and changed his power fist, as I don't really care for the standard one.
Thanksgiving should give me a good opportunity to get going on the RP and the dread, so I'll hopefully have more updates soon.

Looking good so far. How many points are you planning on going to with this army?
7620
Post by: Beamo
Right now, with the black primer, getting a good shot is t
tough. Friday is good weather though, so I'll lay out my basecoat that day with the airbrush, and since it's magnetized, I can move the arm for a better look
The CC arm is a standard CC arm, some plasticard of two different thicknesses, a little bit of green stuff, some guitar wire and some glass microbeads. There's a couple of small styrene rods I used too, but you really can't see them unless you look real close behind added wrist plate. I just wanted some pistons back there, since I'm a bit of a perfectionist. :p
In this case I happened to use the fingers from the AoBR dread, as they were shaped a little better, but it's all up to personal preference.
Right now, people are playing 2000 points around here, so that's the big goal. Currently, I'm trying to put together 1000 points painted before I buy the rest of the stuff I need for the 1500 point mark... mostly bikes.
beyond that, I'll just try to work my way toward Apocalypse size until I jump start my Deathguard army again.
Now, one hang-up I'm having is deciding on freehand for the dreadnought's banner, so any ideas on that would be noted and appreciated.

Very nice work. How did you make the Mk IV legs? I'm working on a pre-heresy wolf force and would really like to add those style knee pads to my Mk IV guys
7620
Post by: Beamo
I was actually dumb, and pushed through the CC arm building so quick, that I didn't stop to take a WIP shot before I primed it.
I'll get a good shot with the basecoat on Friday though, and a lot more detail will show though.
Upon building part of the CC hand, I found that a CSM wouldn't fit without looking stupid, but I may still revisit the idea... we'll see. I really wanted to actually use one of the 28765 chaos powerfists that came on the sprues I've collected over the years.
@Nighteyez- That's not a bad idea! That might give me something to run with.
@Thanatos73- I used to make them by taking a set of Mk VI legs, cutting a groove where I wanted the kneepad to start, shaving away most of the shinguard above that point, and resculpting it to my desire with greenstuff. then drill an indention on either side, and add 2 glass microbeads.
However, making Mk V marines has shown me a way that I can cut all the greenstuff work out while producing the same result, by using a scribing tool the same way I did on the Rune Priest's left shoulder pad, so I'll probably do that on any remaining mk iv marines I build... I think I've got another 15 or so laying around.

Well, it's been a slow couple of weeks, so not much progress, but here's some WIP on the Rune Priest.
Barring weathering and cleaning up a few armor plates, the armor is done and ready for freehanding. I laid down the basecoat on most of the bronze, as well as the wrapping for the knife sheath and force staff, and the leather is done.
The head is done, but I'm not happy with the hair entirely, so I may do some more work on it.
The backpack needs some work to bring it up to the same level of completion as the rest of the model, but I hate painting backpacks so I've been putting it off.
There's so many little things to this guy that I wonder if I shouldn't have done the dreadnought first.

Very Cool Indeed The CC weapon really does look cool.
I like the colour of your priest. You are doing the whole army this pure grey, rather than the usual 'powder blue' ?

Yeah that's the plan. I always liked the less blue tone of the wolves before someone botched the paint job in the early 90's.

Very cool blog so far. I noticed you changed the head on the Rune Priest...why? Don't get me wrong, I think the model looks great. The braided lock of hair on the previous head was a nice addition, however.
7620
Post by: Beamo
Well, as it happens, I got done with the other head, and thought I could paint it better, so I was going to remove the head and simple green it and start over, but I guess I used too much super glue, and the head was essentially destroyed in the removal process.
So I made a new one. I like it better, as he has a calmer, more severe look. He seems more in control, which a psyker should be, lest they lose themselves to the warp.

How do you do the weathering ?

For him, I used the sponge trick and a fine brush. I dabbed some boltgun metal in the larger black areas.
I'm planning a different method for my next one, though, to see if my results are any different, involving liquid latex and the trusty airbrush.

Bjorn the fellhanded is looking phenomenal, I am in total awe of your modelling skills.
If I may be so chheky to ask what bits you used and what is your sculpting technique?
7620
Post by: Beamo
Let see if I can remember everything;
The Banner is brass rod, a WHFB Chaos Marauder Cav banner, & bit from the old 3rd ed. SW sprue.
The Dreadnought is the Forgeworld Mk IV Venerable kit, with Plasma Cannon & Assault Drill arms.
A wolf head backpack and a few banner poles were cannibalized for the smoke launchers and exhaust vents.
You'll see where a lot of plasticard was used, as well as glass miccrobead throughtout for rivets.
The base of the top wolf pelt is a WHFB wolf, while the "belt" is a marauder champion bit, a coulpe of tails, and some talismans from dwarf banners.
Reworking the legs, I tore out the original groin, and replaced it with one from a plastic dread.
A few other misc. bits here and there, but that's most of it.
I just sculpt until I get it the way I want it; trial and error basically.

Wow. Amazing stuff here man; I love what you're doing with the Wolves, particularly the very-well balanced weathering and the older colour scheme; really nice and exactly how I imagine wolves. Beautiful work. Seriously.
Can't wait to see the finished Bjorn; I love what you're doing with him; particularly the head. I admit, I fear the (fell) hand could be a bit over-sized, but otherwise it looks great and with real momentum.
Love it. Can't wait for more.
P.S. Once you've got Bjorn ready, can you put him facing your other Dread as your existing one's fist is in prime cupping-position?

Post by: Beamo
Well, the update for the legs is a little lackluster, I admit; just one photo, but it's a pair of legs, what are you gonna do? With these done, (aside from a light coat of dullcote) I'm moving up to the admittedly more exciting part, the torso.
It's starting to come together, and while I find myself usually getting distracted easily, I seem to be keeping a good momentum going.
Thanks again for looking, and for all the comments.
@wyomingfox: The snow was easy and hard; for the base (the easy part) I just mix Woodland Scenics snow with good old Elmer's white glue until it's a goopy paste. Then I take some toothpicks and a flat sculpting tool and lay it down and shape it where I want it. The hard part was figuring out how to put it on Bjorn himself. I could not find a tutorial for this anywhere, I just knew that I had seen it done before and loved it. It is ridiculously simple, and I felt stupid after I figured it out. I take some more snow, my brush, and some watered down matte varnish. dip the brush in the varnish, dip it in the snow, and brush it onto the model where I want it, paying attention to recesses, and areas where a little snow might pool temporarily, as well as leaving some flakes brushing across the armor, like he's wading through a bit of a blizzard.
@Just Dave: You might be right about the hand, but I look at it this way, a lot of crabs have a dominant fighting claw that seems a little oversized for their bodies, that they use to kick some ass. As long as it looks more intimidating than goofy in the end, I'll be happy. I might be able to work out a cup shot at the end.

Well I'm going to get a little faster with updates, and post them as I get a noticeable amount done. That way, you all aren't sitting in the dark for 2 weeks while I finish a whole chunk of him, just for one photo. Here, I got done with the hide backing on the fur, and the lower and chest portions on the bronze. This let me attach the torso to the legs, and finally glue in the head piece, which was the first thing I painted a week ago. hopefully tomorrow, I can get the fur on the "warbelt" done, so that it doesn't look so sloppy. (I hate that. )

You should keep at it. I've got models from when I started painting that are worse than anything anyone has been able to show me so far. There are also a lot of tricks out there that will give you fantastic results, even if you are a more casual painter, or can't seem to get the hang of wetblending or some of the other more "advanced" techniques.

Well Friday is here, and that means it's time for super happy update. I didn't get as far as I wanted to get for you guys tonight, so the bronze up top and the smoke launchers aren't done, along withe the whole left panel, but I'm tired, so you'll all just have to cope. It's Memorial Day weekend, though, so Monday should be a good painting day. I fiddled a bit, and actually did my white balance, so the grays are actually close to what they are in real life finally.

Absolutely incredible detail on the freehand
7620
Post by: Beamo
Ugh... what a week. Deep withing the Fang, Bjorn's restoration has moved at a snail's pace, owed mainly to indecision and rebuilding of his plasma cannon arm socket not once, but twice. Not much to show, but I've got the weekend, and have cranked my way through most of the boring parts of the torso. I hope to be done and moving onto the banner properly, by the end of the weekend. We'll see how that goes.
Anywho, a few pics the first showing the end result of his new arm socket. I extended it, so that his barrel is parallel to his skull's LOS.
An overall shot; you can see where I've started blocking in basecoats on the arms, as well as the banner freehand and the other panel's freehand. I opted for something simpler so as to not take away from what was supposed to be the more eye catching panel. I'm going to try my hand at a stitching effect on the banner.
And a more top-down shot, as I haven't really showed a full shot of the top wolf pelt before.
I didn't take pics, but I wasn't happy with my prior attempt at the knotwork on his thigh plates, so I redid them. I'll take a pic of that for my next update, but I'm much happier with them now. I'm also going to redo his right shin plate; I think there's too much weathering, and I think I can do a better, more interesting freehand this time around.
Thanks for looking!

PS, that plasma cannon arm is still magnetized... Just wanted to throw that out there. One of these days, when I'm old and grey, I'll probably make him an AC, and I didn't want to have to break anything to do it.
The lightning claw components were a FW dreadnought assault drill arm, some plasticard and glass microbeads, the original Bjorn's claws, and a forth finger taken from a standard plastic dread, plus the top half of a smoke launcher. You can see how most of that stuff fits in from the pre-primer pics, but it was really a lot of trial and error getting it to look believable.

Alright, he's a minor update, showing the parts I redid. It was pretty much all the plating on the lower part of the model. I just wasn't happy with the quality of the freehand, so it all had to be redone. Set me back a couple of days, but I still think I'll be okay.
man that stuff is tiny.
I also redid the greave plate. That freehand wasn't *great* and I had put enough weathering on it, that I really felt like I had lazied out on it. I think this came out better. each of those little runes are .75mm tall, and spell out "vlka russ"
I hope to be done with all but the arms and banner here in the next couple of days. A bit more knotwork, some weathering, some verdegris, and snow, and it should be done.

Alright, here's my update, later than I wanted but not by much. All told, I may go ahead and build/paint his Assault Cannon prior to Gamesday, as I'm not satisfied with my OSL on the plasma coils, and frankly, if I don't build the thing while I'm motivated, I never will, and another magnet will go unused. :(
Looking at the pictures, I'm going to deepen the shade up by the white dot on the lens... Added to my little list of "cleanups" once the model proper is finished.
I stuck the Sun Wolf on the "shoulder", as that's my great company's emblem, and I wanted to tie him to my army that way, as if it wasn't going to be obvious enough on the battlefield. There's a little bit of knotwork on the top of the shoulder plate, which I forgot to get a shot of.
On to to the claw arm tonight. Thanks for looking!

im personally not a big fan of space wolves, but the conversions your making are very educational and they look great!
im curious on how your do the freehanded patterns on the armor... beastial brown basecoat with golden yellow highlight?
anyway, keep up the good work

It depends, there are actually two different "yellows", one being the sunwolf, which is a base of tausept ochre, progressively highlighted with golden yellow and RMS linen white, and shaded with ogryn flesh and gryphonne sepia.
The faux nmm (I didn't really make it true, as I do want it to look like just painted on design in the end) was a base of calthan brown, highlighted by blending vomit brown, and then a spot highlight of vomit brown and white.
both types were edged very finely with GFA Raw Umber, to make each design pop out more.

you manually edged it afterwards?!? wow!
anyway i really like it, i might try it on one of the dreads im getting soon... well, a simplified technique similar to your second technique
it looks awesome

Alright, another update sooner than I had anticipated, but probably the next-to-last update before finished photos go up. At this point, it's just the claw, banner, and a few little clean ups, and he's done... Well, other than the assault cannon, which I'm thinking I might build and paint in a few weeks.
Not a big update, but thanks for looking!

Wow....that is a sexy dreadnought

Alright, time for an update. I just need to do the source lighting on the claw nodes, add some snow, and clean up a couple of spots that I noticed in the giant photos, and it'll be done. Then it's just the banner to finish, and a couple of clean ups on the model. Large photos are great for picking up those tiny errors...
For some reason, I guess the lighting, it really takes away the subtlety of the blade knotwork. It looks better in person.
Here's an overall shot. I also toned back the "glowy" verdigris that was hurting the overall look.
Thanks for looking!

I have been playing Space Wolves for about 10 years now and as many of the guys at the shop will tell you I'm I die hard SW player one even says that he doesn't think I will ever play another army I have close to 9000+ pts. Being such a die hard SW player I am always looking for great conversions. This is by far in my top two, the only one that I think of that comes close is the Ulrick the Slayer that one the French Slayer Sword.

This may be too much to ask, but is there any way that you could go through and explain how you managed to make the arms look so amazing.
Again, AWESOME CONVERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the custom work you have done to this.
I am also planning something special for my Bjorn "counts as".
What did you use for the hydraulics at the neck and shoulder joins?
I know you have included pics of WiP, but some details are missed pre-painting.

The counts has Bjorn has me wowed . From the intial modelling work to the final paint job.
I'm especially impressed with the skull and the glowing power nodes on the lightning claw.
The rest of what you have done so far is also beautiful

That Ulrik model is one of my favorites, as well. The snow really did it for me, and I wanted to replicate that on Bjorn.
I can tell you more about the arms; are you looking for painting, or more on the modelling of the claw and the plasma arm socket?

The neck is all just tiny cabling and guitar wire. For the arm socket, I used brass rod, sheet and tube styrene, and my microbeads as the final touch for the bolts. I drilled symmetrical holes out with a pin vise and put it all together.

Absolutely amazing job Beamo; seriously amazing work.
I love the whole thing; the modelling, the snow, the base, the OSL (you could swear there are actual lights in the DCCW), the entire paintjob. I'm no expert when it comes to P&M, but that's an amazing piece of work.
My only criticism would be that I think the claw is a bit too big, but the model as a whole is 10/10.
Voted for it in CMoN too; did you realise its ranked the 10th best sci-fi model of 2011?!
Is it still OK if I include a picture of him in my tactica? With proper accreditation of course.

I think the claw is just not very photogenic with its size; It's sitting on my desk in front of me right now, and it looks to be the right size... the claws might be a little bit long. But every time I photo it, it looks like a giant crab claw.
I did see that this morning... I'm hoping It was the highest ranked model of its day, so that I can make the blast from the past post in 6 months.
Absolutely man, go for it. Just shoot me a link when it's up, so that I can take a look. I'm interested in reading the article.

Ah, that's fair enough man, I can believe that. I must say the size of the claw is growing on me every second anyway!
I've added it to my tactica article ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Space_Wolves_Tactica%2C_5th_Ed/09_Codex), if you want me to change it in any way then just say! Btw, the specific image I used is rated 10/10 (no decimals) exactly in the gallery with 13 votes!
Once again, great job man.

More the modeling aspect. I am not that great at painting but I love doing the converting and am always looking for a new way to make models look different.

Ah okay. To repost from above:
For the arm socket, I used brass rod, sheet and tube styrene, and my microbeads as the final touch for the bolts. I drilled symmetrical holes out with a pin vise and put it all together.
The other arm required a lot more work. I started out with a Forgeworld Assault Drill arm, and added in some plasticard, microbeads, and the claws from the original Bjorn model. the forth finger is from a plastic dread, some plasticard, and half a smoke launcher.
A lot of greenstuff went in there mostly for cleanup, some ribbing, etc, most of which you can see in the pre-primer pics.
The real key was the assault drill arm. the model comes in 7 pieces, allowing you a lot of flexibility in assembly, which helps to keep the model dynamic.

Congrats on the GD Silver win! That ork on the bike was very well done, but i'm not sure it's better than your dread.

Thanks man!
No worries, that stuff always end up somewhat hotly debated. I'll just have to try to widen the gap more next year!
