I just got my Chaos Reaver Titan from Forgeworld, I got it last week and have been working on it since. I've decided to post my progress for everyone here to see.
What I ordered:
1x Chaos Reaver Titan Body
1x Melta Cannon arm
1x Laser Blaster arm
1x Power fist arm
1x Apocalypse Missile Launcher Carapace Weapon
1x Warhound Plasma Cannon arm (Which I will convert to a carapace weapon)
1x Warhound Vulcan Mega Bolter arm (Which I will convert to a carapace weapon)
I do plan on making all the weapons inter-changeable. It will take a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it. I still need to order magnets for this. I also have to green stuff and modify the plasma/vulcan megabolter weapons to be more uniform, that way it will looks better mounted on the carapace.
I'm currently about 80% done trimming all the parts. After that I will need to wash them.
Anyway here are the pics:
All the parts as they were received:
I gotta love that my Titan is number 469. I'm assuming that this is the number of total Reaver Titans casted to date, including both Loyalist and Chaos models.
The chaos reaver has to be one of the best looking forgeworld models to date. I cant wait to see how you find building it as I am tempted to get one my slef, but the whole thought of building it kinda makes me scared...

heh, tell me about it man... I'm somewhat worried how things will play out, especially with the fact that I will be magnetizing the weapons... I hope that turns out ok and that I don't botch it horribly.
In the end, as long as you take your time, read the instructions carefully, and do some research online, everything should work out in the end.
jabbakahut wrote:Make it very detailed (so I can reference when I build mine!)
Will do!
Just a question for ya though, when you finished painting your titan, what did you use for the finish coat? I'm guessing a Matt finish, but what kind of brand. I also couldn't find the reason why you didn't go with the magnet arms, unless I'm just blind. :p
It was definitely a matt spray, I don't recall the brand. I can't say I've had any bad experience with a matt spray, so I've never paid attention to which I buy. Probably a $10 bottle from the hardware store (specialized hobby sprays do tend to be overpriced for what they are).
The problem I had with the magnets seems to be unique to just me. Plenty of people are using magnets all over their models now. With the titan resin parts-they are heavy and articulate from an unbalanced point. To compensate you must use the large and stronger magnets. My problem was that the magnets broke the chemical bond of the glue-but they still were too small to hold the arms in their proper placement. When I do my Reaver-I plan on trying the magnets again (for arm variants). I will only try this if I can find a way to really secure the magnets-ideally with a bolt.

Hmmm too bad, I did have some ard coat, but I used it once, and it didn't seem to turn out very well... :x
I may look into getting something else then.
Ya, I tried magnets on some CSM Terminators, but they just didn't feel very secure at all when picking them up. Probably didn't help that I had magnetized the shoulder pads too though. For this Titan though, I really want to try and make it work, since I don't want to buy a Titan for each weapon load out... :|
So I finally finished cutting/trimming all the flash on the resin pieces. So, next step for me was to clean/wash all the parts.
Bath time for the reaver bits!
These were a pain to clean, mainly because they were so damn small...
First, I poured some Mr Clean Floor cleaner into the water, dunno how much exactly;about as much as I felt necessary.
After that, I let it sit for about 1/2 an hour. Then took a tooth brush and scrubbed the pieces thoroughly. Then rinsed them in warm water, before scrubbing them again with soap, and rinsing them one last time.
Finally, I layed out all the pieces to let them dry.
So, after a night of drying, I had to start patching up all the air bubbles on the pieces, I did this two ways, using green stuff for the bigger holes and super glue for the smaller ones.
This piece was probably the worst as you can see:
After the green stuff finally sets, I'll sand down all of it to make it nice and smooth, once that is done, I can finally start to glue/prime it.
Essentially, you want to wash to get rid of the release agent that might still be on the pieces, otherwise when you go to paint or primer the model, it will just flake off. I has this happen to me with my Brass Scorpion, luckily I had just started painting it and had not primed all the pieces.
jabbakahut wrote:I don't know if it was just my warhound, I haven't don the reaver yet, but the pieces look cleaner-but my warhound was impossible to clean.
Well, oddly enough, some of the pieces had a much more kind of glossy look to them, like the apoc missile launcher, which I tried to see if it would scrub off. I washed it a few times more, even with a stronger concentration of the floor cleaner to no avail. I'm hoping it wont be an issue, I'll find out once I start to prime this thing.
That is the exact issue I had. The only thing I didn't try was maybe a fine sand paper, because the paint does have a difficult time sticking to the shinny areas.
jabbakahut wrote:That is the exact issue I had. The only thing I didn't try was maybe a fine sand paper, because the paint does have a difficult time sticking to the shinny areas.
Hmmm, I think I got me some 800 grit, I'll try using that one those areas, hopefully it helps. I did google this, and on one forum someone had said that it is just the nature of some resin material to appear glossy like that, that it is not the release agent.
One thing I've tried that's not let me down yet is shooting the model with some old Citadel matt varnish, then priming it. Apparently the varnish bites onto the model far better than the primer does. An alternative is to use hardware store primer
Honestly for all of your effort I would use a "paint on" primer just applied with an air brush. This will illiminate "cat hairs" (those little hair fibers primer picks up). Testors flat black has components that are indicative of primer, and works great with a nice smooth finish.
Agamemnon2 wrote:One thing I've tried that's not let me down yet is shooting the model with some old Citadel matt varnish, then priming it. Apparently the varnish bites onto the model far better than the primer does. An alternative is to use hardware store primer
I've read about that as well, I might actually just do that, although i'll still give all the parts one more wash, but I'll pick up some matt varnish and spray down the parts with a nice thin layer.

Unfortunately it will be an issue. That glossy stuff rteally repels the paint. Even if you flood an area, half hour later there's resin showing.
You have to sand, scrape or brush the area (I use a brass brush - it sounds brutal but it works really well.) Also try a glass fibre pen for small areas. But becareful of the bits of fibreglass that come off - they itch like h*ll!
I also have an old Oral B electric tootbrush (the ones with the rotary heads) to help with cleaning. Works ace!

Hey, so apparently I've been working on a Titan for a while now and I kind of forgot to update what has been going on here.
Anyway, I have been working on it, on and off. Last couple of months has kept away from it, Christmas, New Years, Olympics and work.
So, here is my rather massive update on it so far, I won't go into too much detail of what has been done over time, if you are really curious you can check out my project blog page: http://www.acoliteart.blogspot.com/.
Basically I've come to the point where I have glued and primed everything I need to for the legs. I will start to paint them in the next week or so.
After cleaning it, I went and glued/pinned and fitted all the parts. After that I primed it using the following method:
I first prepared all the parts by applying small pieces of painters tape to all the areas where I'd be gluing things together.
Then used the Matt Varnish first, since it adheres better to resin than regular spray paint. I did about two light coats on each piece. It dries quite quickly, only takes about 15 minutes, once that was done, I sprayed the pieces with the Chaos Black spray paint.
After letting it dry over night, I went back to check how it turned out. After rubbing all the pieces, none of the primer came off. Success!
I learned things the hard way with my Greater Brass Scorpion, it was quite terrifying to see the paint peal off as I painted.
Finally I ended up gluing all the pieces that I could, that would not interfere with painting any areas.
Oh wow. If there is anything that would make e start worshipping chaos it would be the promise of getting one of these babys if I did great blog, will be following attentively And I hope to the blood god you are mounting this on an awesome base full of smushed loyalists

Initially I wasn't thinking of doing a base for it, but more and more I think about I might.
It would also make the legs a bit more secure and the overall model more balanced.
I'm just worried about how much mobility on the board the Titan will have after I do.

You could just do two small bases on each foot. That way they stay stable and doesnt take up half the board
awesome thread by the way. I cant wait to see it when you start painting
I could do that, I did see someone that had two, somewhat small based for each food, but it overlapped and join in the middle, might do something like that.
Thats goign to take ferever to paint. Also, whats your color scheme for your legion?Mine is a grey base coat, red gore, baal red,and bolt gun for the details.FOR THE CHAOS GODS!
So I've been thinking about what I am going to do for a color scheme. Now, I was initially going to go with pretty much the same idea with what Forge world did for theirs, red and brass, mainly since my army is khornate CSM army.
However lately I have been having second thoughts. I've been wanted to paint some of my csm in a different color scheme, I got the idea after playing with the army painter in Chaos Rising. This is what color scheme I came up with:
I was thinking something like that, as my own personal color scheme. I'll probably be making a small personal war band for part of my army as well. obviously the army painter in the game is pretty limited, but I'd probably add a splash of red here and there, since it would still be loyal to khorne.
Otherwise I'd go for the more traditional colors:
My whole thought behind this is, I'll probably not be buying another one of these, at the very least not any time soon. I'd want it to be somewhat unique, that it is my Titan, yet, at the same time, I do like the forgeworld colors.
Anyway, I'm open for ideas and input from everyone.
So I have begun painting the Titan. I decided to try the white and brass on a leg armor plate first, to see how it would turn out. Initially it seemed alright, but as I got further into it, adding some weathering/damage and blood splatter, it looked worse and worse. After staring at what I had painted for 30 seconds, I found myself going over the entire white with red gore. :|
Needless to say, it didn't work out. The red turned out much better.
I've also started painting the inner leg portion. So far so good!

Let me know what you all think.
The top image is pretty much 100% the same as a warband i was thinking of doing i just love the contrast of it. I'd go for the top one, i've never seen a white chaos marine, seen plenty of red
Well, a bit too lately sadly. I'll probably try it again on some chaos marines, to see how it turns out, but it just wasn't working out on the Titan. :(
Im quite glad you went with the red and gold for the titan. Mainly because you painted it very well... and also because it wouldnt fit with the rest of the army at all... yeah you want it to stand out, but an entire red army and one giant white tian... I dont think it would look good... although on actual minis I think it would look quite awsome!

Yeah, that's very true, I'm planing on adding a few unique details, few symbols and what not, to make it a bit unique. Was thinking of doing a symbol across the head. Already have something in mind.
Yikes, this is embarrassing. I haven't put up any updates on the Titan in a long time. I've had the thing for over 1 year, and its still not at all close to being done. :|
With that I set a goal that I'd spend at least 1 hour every day working on the Titan. So far, during the last 6 days, I've accomplished just that.
I decided to paint, what my friends and I have dubbed "Angry Knee". It was good practice and a bit of a challenge to remember how to go about painting it. I also finished the metallic colors on the inner leg portions, which I will upload later.
Ok, you don't know how relieved I am to see you are a great painter! I can't tell you how big a downer it is to see awesome diversions and or expensive titans painstakingly put together, but then painted to low standards...
That knee is fantastic, what rich reds you've achieved, and in 1 color only the nuances and blending are enough to interest and inspire, nm the rest.
I know what you are talking about I am stalled on mine too had to wait for crystal clear paint and flat clear for mine i need to get out the brushes and get back to work on it

Keep it up, and update often!
Thanks man. I appreciate it.
I definitely know what you are talking about. When I see some expensive models, painting poorly, I just cringe. I wouldn't have bought the thing if I knew I couldn't do it just.
sonofruss wrote:I know what you are talking about I am stalled on mine too had to wait for crystal clear paint and flat clear for mine i need to get out the brushes and get back to work on it
You should get on it! It'll be worth it. Honestly, just try to work on it for at least 1 hour a day. It may not seem like a lot, but it will add up and the more you get done, the more you'll be motivated to work on it longer.
Well, I was hoping to have an update last Saturday, but as it turns out, the inner leg parts took longer than expected. I've been doing a good solid 1 - 3 hours each day so far. I'm feeling really good about it and I'm excited to be on my way to completing this project.
c0un7_z3r0 wrote:Do you use the same red for every coat or do you mixe it?
I've mixed it every time when doing any part.
Basically, 3 coats of red gore, one coat of blood red (mainly away from the edges), and Red wash. Then highlight and shade with red gore/blood red/blazing orange. After that just a wash of black and brown along the edges.
So many projects, so little time... Looking great-love the paint job, makes me want to unpack and finally start mine (after actually pre-ordering the Reaver as soon as it was announced!)
c0un7_z3r0 wrote:Thanks, I might just try that for my Khador force, it really looks great!
Give it a try, I'd love to see how it turns out.
jabbakahut wrote:So many projects, so little time... Looking great-love the paint job, makes me want to unpack and finally start mine (after actually pre-ordering the Reaver as soon as it was announced!)
You should man, it's too nice of a model to just have it go to waste like that.
So, what did I learn about gluing all those pieces for the inner lower leg areas...
I had two parts that did not want to fit together. Essentially, because of how both of the legs are bent as far as they are, I neglected to realize that I won't be able to fit the piston in with the guard piece. Issue occurred on the front most leg's rear piston guard and on the front piston guard on the other leg. In the end having to shave a lot of the piston was the only way to get it to actually fit, and even then it was very tight.
Next problem was with the toes, once again caused by how far the legs were bent. I had to use a mixture of pinning, green stuff, and super glue to get it all to fit together.
Needless to say it was a messy, frustrating ordeal. I also ended messing up some of the paint because of getting super glue on my fingers. After about 3 hours it was done, and I patched up all the areas I messed the paint up.
Wow. I didn't know that so many people have bought titans (reading from the start). This is going to look amazing when finished. The red would look better on the titan thatn the white, but its to late for my opinion. Good luck!
NeonHate wrote:looks leet.. i might have to save up for a warhound ^_^
Do it, I'm thinking I might get one or two to compliment the Titan at some point, and if I have money for it.

Yeah, and I got this 1 year ago so, I can only imagine how many more were sold since.
SilverMK2 wrote:Wow - that looks extremely good. Not entirely sure on the pose of the legs (they look a bit too straight) but the painting is epic.
Yeah, I actually think I should have done it a bit differently. I just ran into another problem where I couldn't get the armor plates that are to go around the bottom portion of the legs in. I had to shave off a bit of the resin and squeeze it in, the other leg is fine though. I'm just trying to figure out how I managed to miss that before I had primed it. :|
Things came together much better than I had expected, after the initial problems of the armour plates not wanting to fit together properly.
I also went ahead and did some freehand work, the mark of Khorne on the one knee pad, and the quotes on each side of the legs. I think the bleach bones colour came out really well on the red, better than I had initially expected.
I created a mask with some green painters tape for the knee pad. This worked out ok, some of the paint still bled through over the the lines, so I had to touch it up.
Now that this part is done, I can start work on the weapons and Torso. Which I think I'll be able to do tomorrow.
Woa... been a while... I apologize for that, unfortunately life got in the way, so I had to put the Titan on hold. Just started working on it again recently, mainly because the new Necron codex came out and Im looking forward to playing my crons again.
Anyways, here some pics. I painted the cockpit and some of the internal parts for the Titan. Enjoy!
If it's one thing life does it's getting in the way of things, especially things like this! I'm glad to see that you're back! Great work as well, the painting of all those details seems flawlessly executed!

It sure does, but its good to be working on it again. I'm currently painting the arm joints/etc, getting the simple stuff out of the way. Thanks.
I haven't worked this hard on a model for quite some time. I've managed to get a significant amount of work completed on the Titan.
All the photos below are parts of the upper torso, more specifically the internal guts and arm joints. Next update will include the remaining armor plates for the upper torso. Don't know how long it will take exactly, my guess is about the same amount as all these parts below.
After that's all done, I'll quickly go over the model to make sure there isn't any damage or missed spots, and then I'll start moving onto the weapons. I also plan on spraying the model down with a matte varnish, I don't normally do on my models, but I want to play it safe with this one.
So tonight I went ahead and glue all the upper Torso parts that I wanted to glue. I also dry fitted all but one of the armour plates(the one that I didn't needs to be glued on the underside).
It's looking really good so far. I will have a bit of touching up to do here and there after gluing, but overall it's coming along quite nicely.
I just finished the faceplate. Initially I was going to do chunks of each piece, so I could get them all done at around the same time, but I ended getting the face plate done first. I created another stencil for the symbol I wanted to do. It wasn't quite as good as the Mark of Khorne one I did for the knee, but it still turned out quite good.
I've managed to complete yet more of the Titan. This time the underside armour plate, the plate that fits between the Torso and the the upper Mid plate, and of course the actual Mid plate. Probably one of the coolest parts of the model, the eye of Horus. Decided to go with a blue/white for the eye, similar to the smaller one inside the Titan. I only have the two shoulder plates left, and then the body will be officially done. At this rate, it will be done faster than my initial prediction of end of next week.
Finally! I can say I completed the body of the Titan. I can now move onto the weapons. I touched up some details here and there, but I'm sure there is something I need to touch up still, if anything I'll go over it later. The weapons that I want work on immediately is the Apocalypse Missile Launcher, Laser Blaster, and Melta Cannon.
Awesome work so far!! Im a huge fan of the blue eye by the way! super clean work, that creates and excellent contrast to the rest of the model!! very striking!!
Very much looking forward to the complete thing. What a beast ...!

Thanks man. I can't wait to get it done too. Its a shame I've had it for 2 years and I'm only getting around to finishing it now. :p
Just a small update, I've gotten the main weapons I will be using with the Titan primed. Used the same method as before, applying a coat of matte varnish, followed by black primer.
crudcakes wrote:Do you have a formula for the trim and the metal because it looks great!
For the Brass trim, I use a base non-gw color. It's called Iridescent Bronze, a Golden Acrylics paint. Then I apply a wash of Badab Black, and for the highlights I use Iridescent Gold. For the arrows and spikes going across the armour or poking out, I highlight the top of the ridges with silver.
If I remember too, I'll record painting the Apoc Missile Launcher to show how I go about doing it. If that helps at all.
Ever get the feeling that what you're about to say has never been said before? Like, no one has ever had cause to arrange those exact words in that order? Well, I can't decide which part I love more, Back Eye or Angry Knee. Both are absolutely fantastic looking.

Mine was too, so don't worry. : P It took a few attempts to straighten it out.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Weapons!!!
Well, managed to get two of the three primary weapons completed. I only have the Apocalypse Missile Launcher left to work on. Both the arm weapons below are magnetized. They are interchangeable, between each arm. Gonna start working on the Apoc Missle Launcher soon.
After I finish that, I'm gonna do a few touch ups, and spray the model with a matte varnish. I'll also work on a banner to go with the titan.
Finally, after 2 years of working on this model I've finally finished it. Now, I still have 3 weapon options I need to finish, make a banner, and possibly spray a varnish on the model, but otherwise, it is done.
I have gone back and did a few touch up repairs where I could find imperfections, but I'm sure more will come up.
Enjoy the photos in the mean time, I will also be uploading a video of the Titan as well, depending on how long it takes me to figure out how to do that.
Would love to run my CSM along side their Canadian red and gold brothers

I probably wont get another Reaver Titan ever again, this one took me long enough. I am possibly going to get a war hound titan to accompany it, but I don't know when I'll be doing that.
For now, I plan working on my necrons that I got.
As for videos, I will probably do some more in the future, might do one for the Greater Brass Scorpion I have as well.
