Angry Marines Army @ 2009/12/04 21:41:23

Post by: Zoolon

I was posting some of my progress on a different forum, but I'd like to see what you guys think. I have been waiting for awhile for the new Space Wolves codex, and now that it is out I have been working on a tournament-legal Angry Marines army. I currently have 1500 pts of this army, and hopefully after the holidays I can build a 2000 pt list. here is what I have created so far:

here are the painted models so far. I used these three to test out colors and painting techniques. I like how they turned out and I look forward to painting the others!

the standard Angry Marines.

the first of my squad leaders, Angry Alan. he is armed with a pistol and a "frost blade". I wanted him to have an eviscerator, but the space wolves codex didn't have the option.

all of my squad leaders. can't wait to paint them!
from left to right:
-chapter master Magnus Iratus
(thunder wrench & bolter, but will trade out thunder hammer profile with frost blade profile)
-Angry James of the Devastators
(power 2x4, bolt pistol)
-Angry Boris of the Terminators
(power wrench, storm bolter)
-Angry Dennis of the Angry Bikers
(power fist)
-Angry Frank of the Angry Marines troops
(mark of RAGE)

and finally, we have Dirk the Jerk. Equipped with a twin-linked heavy flamer, another heavy flamer, and smoke launchers.

feel free to share any thoughts and ideas. I'd love to hear what others are thinking about this project! I plan on painting a bunch of these figures this holiday break, and I will post my progress as I reach major milestones. enjoy!

actually I have been using all of the different renditions of the fan-made rules as guidelines for equipping my Angry Marines army, especially these fan-made codexes. I may not know all of the lore of the Angry Marines, but I think I am getting a solid grip on it.

It is so hard for me not to start Angry Marines when I look at the unpainted plastics I have. Literally the only reason I have not jumped at the idea is because I'm not sure how I would explain why my miniatures are covered in obscenity to friends and family.

Your next dreadnaught should have the marine interred inside punching his way out through the sarcophagus cover in a fit of rage.

This will probably cause a lot of rage, but you could build a Completly GW Leagal Angry Marine List use the Space Wolves.
Twin-Chain Fist
MotW-Rage.

[please don't hurt for this, I have been thinking about it since the SW book came out and saw that you could take 2 Chain Fist]

actually using two chainfists is completely legal AND available for HQ choices and Wolf Guard. BITCHIN! also the MotW is awesome, but it's rules say "[the model's close combat attacks] are not affected by wargear, additional hand weapons and so on, though they may be bolstered by other factors (the bonus for charging, Logan Grimnar's Living Legend ability, etc.)" which means that the two powerfists may or may not serve any purpose in battle in conjunction with that ability (I will have to delve into this apsect a little more just to be sure...). for this reason the fella I did give the MotW to, Angry Frank, I gave two chainswords and the emblem on his back to show that he has the mark of RAGE, since the equipment is ignored in close combat anyway and they look awesome.

BUT I do have a wolf guard battle leader/Wolf Guard slot open, so I can always get a double chain/powerfist model on the field, and if I can slap on a mark of RAGE!...AND a jump-pack maybe???? AND on the topic of close combat weapons I feel it very necessary that the next squad leader shall be modeled thusly:

I can't wait for this holiday break! Also thanks for the ideas you guys are tossing out, I am gonna have so much fun making and building these guys!

oh yeah. since it looks like I am going to have a couple new special guys, any ideas for names?

hey folks! it's been awhile since I have posted any progress on my army, but I assure you that I am making great progress on my army! I currently have 1000 pts of my 2000 pt. force fully painted. here are the pics of everything completely painted so far:

and here is a closeup on my Angry Marine Chaplain:

Image removed for containing profanity. Nice paint work though.

Also I think that I will continue to use Space Wolves rules until the Blood Angels codex comes out later this year. I have heard that this new codex can more accurately portray Angry Marines, so we'll see when it comes out!

That's all I got so far for ya! Next up will be all my Fast attack and Heavy support choices!

Are you going to convert a Commissar Fuklaw?

I do at some point plan on making a Fuklaw model. Not sure when, but maybe when I do I could whip up a 500 pt Imperial guard army to legally field him alongside Angry Marines. Unless there is another count-as workaround that I could pull off (counts-as HQ in scout armor?). Even so I would still love to convert a model of him!

beautiful. I am crying with happiness at this army. I am curious as to whether or not you plan to make a predator agrinator (or whatever it is called) as nothing says angry like a space marine with a power sack of doorknobs going mach one into the enemy's face. Speaking of which you do need to make the adamantine sack of power doorknobs. IT is simply required.

yes, I do plan on making a predator Angrinator, but that will be a bit later. also the sack of power doorknobs seems like a good thing to include, but to make it tournament-legal I need to find a worthy count-as rule. maybe I can find something like that in the blood angels codex when it comes out.

Adamantine sack full of power doornobs = Frost weapon.

Also, instead of powerfists, you could give them brass knuckles.

And as a close combat weapon, you could give one marine a kitten or puppy which he holds by the tail (or a cow, lol, he's a space marine after all)

I second the idea of someone beating someone else to death with his own leg. As a joke, maybe a Long 'n Angry(Long Fang) could have his leg replaced with his heavy weapon. Actually, maybe the chapter master could have his powah sward attached to the stump of his leg, embeded in someone's back. Maybe instead of Wolf Claws they could have rusty nails instead of fingers. Dems mah thoughts.

Very well done.

I too run an Angry Marines army (Space Marines Codex Legal). Initially I chose them to really annoy certain members of my local gaming group who were overtly obsessed with the fluff of the game. They kept arguing that I'd never be allowed to field them in a tournament because they aren't a real chapter, the morons...so my goal was always a theme that annoys that sort of player, whilst remaining 100% codex legal. I admit though that lately they are becoming closer to Salamanders. I am up to 5,000 points worth of codex legal models, not counting Apocalypse pieces.

I don't have much here to show you unfortunately, as half of my models are still set up at a friends house. But here's a quick (camera phone) snap of what's on my painting table, mostly either old models or misc models which I'm currently rebasing:

Roll call (left to right, front to back):

  • Captain in Terminator Armour with Chainfist and Storm Bolter - Retired from regular gaming due to points cost

  • Captain with Combi Melta and Power Sword

  • Chapter Master with Storm Bolter and Lightning Claw

  • Chapter Master Ira Bellicus - Counts as Marneus Calgar in Armour of Antilochus)

  • Rows 2 and 3 are miscellaneous Devestator Models - Retired from regular gaming due to points cost

  • Assault Terminators with Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields

  • Miscellaneous Seargants with multiple options

  • Ignore the Servitors and the Librarian, they aren't very angry right now

I'll try to get some snaps of my vehicles tonight. They are my pride and joy, since I run a fully mechanised army

I think I found a good model to represent the Angry Marine character "Captain hole" in his dreadnought form. Even though he is all metal it will be an excellent model to use when the new Blood Angels codex comes out. behold, the Furioso Dreadnought!

with all the abilities I have heard this thing has, I am anxious to get this and the Blood Angels codex come April! I am also anxious to paint this guy to be even more angry then my current dreadnought Dirk the Jerk!

in the meantime I will keep grinding away at my current models and my angry marine fleet (too bad I remembered about Captain hole's Battle Barge after buying my ships and building them, but I don't want to have too many Battle Barges!)

Are you going to use the new Death Company(advance order) for the troops, or just for elites. Maybe you could use the sanguinary guard as pretty marines, due to that in quite a bit of the art ive seen has Angry Marines slaughtering their pretty bretheren. As a matter o fact, it would be funny if that any minis are shown executing somebody, they could be pretty marines so you don't have to worry about fighting different armies. For your bikers they could be shown with dead pretty marines chained to the back of the bike, being dragged across the battle field.

DRIVE ME CLOSER! I WANT TO HIT THEM WITH MAH SWORD!!!
Plus, are we going to see Raege anytime soon?

Here are some more random shots of my Angry Marines. Still don't have all of my models here, but I'll try to take a good photo tomorrow.

Photos aren't any better, and I won't show much of my troops (as they are currently all on my modelling table, for an updating of paint jobs and rebasing).

All of my tanks stacked up (old photo, as I have updated the paint jobs on all of these):

My Belligerent Engine (bad language, whilst already rather fuzzy, censored further):

My kitbashed IronClad Dreadnought. Inspired by the "Tombstone" in the recent movie version of Death Race:

4 random troops awaiting touching up. Unfortunately these were modelled for 4th edition's old Chapter Traits system:

My command squad. My (helmeted) veterans all have black helmets with green eyes. The apothecary is missing as I am redoing him from scratch. I'll post him at a future date.

A more recent addition to my army. Chapter Master Ira Bellicus (counts as Marneus Calgar). This was before he was based.

An objective piece I had wanted to create for quite a while. The idea came from here (maybe NSFW!)

An older photo of an epic battle. This one space marine sergeant (I represent sergeants with black shoulder pads) held the flag against these imperial guardsmen for 3 rounds.

Apologies again for the bad quality photos.

Thats whats great about them, how the hell would a REAL adamantium sack even function? No one knows, I guess they are so pissed off, that the sack just works like a sack, because it doesnt want an Angry Marine to form it into a face, so he can then punch it in the face.

It's turning out well, save for the paintjob. You are using primer right? A lot of the figures just look like they have -really- thick paint. Maybe thin your paints a wee bit and wait longer between each coat?

Otherwise, I like how this is turning out. Can I request an Angry Marine punching his arm down an Ork's throat? Or kicking something so hard in the arse that his foot got stuck?

I'm sorry that I've pretty much hijacked this thread from you, Zoolon :(

No nastiness meant, your topic was just convenient. I much prefer the way your army is turning out over mine! In fact, as I'm going back through my troops and fixing things I'm tempted to re-do my chapter insignia like you have done it.

Speaking of troops, here are all of mine currently getting re-based (minus seargants, minus squad formations, and minus two models that are in pieces):

EDIT: Oh, and I've been having a go at doing the marine using an Imperial Guardsman as a CCW. I have found that the pilot that came in the Battle for Macragge box (Lt Varrus?) has his legs posed near perfectly for this. Some hacksawing and greenstuffing of his hands later, and we have this. I have done a false-coloured comparison next to it to help you pick out the details.

    VERY WIP:

Huh. I just realized you weren't the OP.

You should start your own thread. If the OP resumes his thread again, great. But don't jack his thread with your own stuff. That doesn't make you look very good.

That said, a few tips on your painting - thin em' down, wait longer between coats so they can dry more thoroughly, and use less paint overall. Your scheme is solid, but it's also thick and obscuring huge amounts of detail. I would suggest you pick up some DOT3 Brake Fluid (Make sure that's what you grab, other stuff will melt the minis!) or Simple Green, strip em, and try again.

Considering that the Angry Marines are such a fringe army, the one thread is the most logical instead of separate threads.

As I said, the troops are old models. The bulk of them are Battle of Macragge models in fact. They are on my painting table for updating, but as I run a mechanised force not much will happen in this area.

but seriously, I have been chipping away at my army progress, and I guess I should start taking higher-quality detail pics of my stuff, just to one-up the stuff MrPendulum is posting.
Also, MrPendulum's pic of an imp. guard-wielding Angry Marine is motivating me to make my own version of that! EXPECT SOMETHING WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK.

Also I appreciate all the ideas you guys keep generating! I am liking the idea of dragging a Pretty Marine behind a bike. I'll have to hold off on more modeling projects until after I get the Blood Angels codex though.

oh, and as a critique for Mr. Pendulum, your colors do look very thick, and your yellow looks muddier then what mine looks like in the lighting I photographed in. I suggest going back and fixing these up. I suggest using a color like Iyanden Darksun as the base, and drybrush a bright yellow over that. and for the red I used Mechrite red with a drybrush of a bright red over that. And I agree thinning your paints helps ALOT. Having a clean, uniformed looking, angry face is just not angry enough. You've got to have shoulderpads with bared teeth, popped middle-fingers, and an indent from something's face being smashed into it

Feth that. Orks are too unpissed to be angry marines. Orks actually still have a language beyond cursing. Therefore, not angry enough.

EDIT: You SHOULD, however, paint up a Marine to look like the Hulk in the remains of his Power Armour. The Hulk would certainly fit, as he's so angry he can't kill and talk at the same time

I'm not a fan of the mindless troll community that is 4chan, so that biases me quite a bit against this. Likewise I'm not too keen on whole armies built around what is essentially a joke. Thus I have the same views on the "Hello Kitty" armies and the like. It just seems to be a waste of good miniatures and I would never do it.

But to each his own I suppose.

That all being said, kudos on the dedication to the project and the work you've put into it. At least you are painting your figures, which is more than I can say about far too many 40k players I've come into contact with over the years.

Not to sound like a jerk, but what's the point of saying this? If you don't like the source material, there's not much point in commenting on something that isn't in your sense of humor. I mean, I don't like Ultramarine blogs all that much, but I don't go into them just to comment about how I find them boring. It just seems like this is a completely unnecessary post. Besides, it's not your stuff he's using for his army, and no one -is- asking you do do it, so I can't see why it would bother you as much as you say.

    hey now guys, settle down.

I have actually been called out before on wasting Space Marines on a joke army, and I understand what you are getting at. To be honest I myself haven't been all that keen to the 4chan community, but I simply think that the Angry Marines are a funny army and they have just been really fun to paint and model. Also I have discovered that the /tg/ board is actually not that bad, you should just avoid /b/! Isn't it half the point to enjoy making your army as much as you enjoy playing with it?

also we don't need just positive comments. In fact, I love criticism just as much as praise, since criticism tells me what I need to work on to improve what I got, and praise is telling me what works!

like I said earlier, I am holding off on current conversions until the new codex comes out, which may give me ideas to add conversions that can have a "count-as" rule applied to it, like how a duel-wielding marine with a middle finger banner in the space wolves rules counted as the Mark of the Wolfen. In the meantime I'll keep plugging away at my painting.

Thanks, I agree whole heartedly. Unfortunately most of my troop were painted 3 or 4 years ago when I was still learning, so their paint job is nowhere near the quality of my more recent paint jobs. Click here to see the last troops I painted, which are not Angry Marine themed at all. (Also see my Sisters of Battle.)

Iyandsen darksun is my colour of choice alright. I paint it down straight over a black primer. Then I go back and paint in the soft armour in black. Blood red for the eyes, skull white mixed with codex grey for the mouth grill. For the shoulder pads, I paint the main surface iyandsen darksun, then paint blood red straight over the top. Moves the colour slightly towards orange, but it remains vibrant. Normally I finish this off with a yellow ink, though lately I have been loving the Badab Black and Bestial Brown washes. 2 parts yellow ink to 1 part badab black to 2 parts water = godlike!

If you don't mind me making one tiny little critique...

In the earliest images of Angry Marines, their left knee pad is painted red. Unfortunately most of these images are now lost (and one of the pictures on 1d4chan incorrectly has it's right knee pad painted red). See the Dreadnought Close Combat Wielding marine in this picture for what I mean:

yeah it would be nice if you moved to another thread. I don't mind you posting a sample group shot of what you got though! And since your army is a few years old, I'd also like to see you try repainting some of your angry marines. you can soak your models in some of this stuff for 40+ minutes, or overnight if need be, then scrub the paint off with an old toothbrush you don't plan on using ever again. I'd like to see you try repainting at least a couple models, but still, you can do all this in your own thread.
Iyandsen darksun is my colour of choice alright. I paint it down straight over a black primer. Then I go back and paint in the soft armour in black. Well firstoff, I don't like the way the white-grey looks. A drybrush of boltgun metal over black looks more like a space marine faceplate. And I admit the ink washes are nice, I am using that on my in-progress Angry Marines battlefleet gothic ships (coming soon!), but it makes it too dark and muddy without a bright yellow to drybrush over that. Angry Marine armor is a BRIGHT yellow, and don't forget that!

In the earliest images of Angry Marines, their left knee pad is painted red.

hmmm, perhaps if I make a veterans squad I will incorporate this into their paint scheme....
I actually like this current scheme I am using, and alot of the artwork I have seen are done in this fashion. but I will have to add that bit of red to some veterans later. Thanks for the idea!

and as of right now I am on spring break, so LOTS of time to paint something to show! *gets back to work*

*emerges from the darkness and dusts off thread*

    Hello everyone.

Sorry I have been away from this forum for so long, but since I graduate from college in December this year I have been caught up working on very important things, even during this past summer. BUT FRET NOT! I have been chipping away at my army, and hopefully I will have 1850 pts of fully painted models to share by the time I graduate, and I'll have a better space to photograph them in. but just so you people don't think I am pulling your leg I will take some quick photos tomorrow to show you where I am at with my army and where I am going with it. Thank you all for your support, hang tight a bit longer, and excuse me while I get to work saving the world.

    ALRIGHT, PHOTO TIME!

for starters, here is the Chaplain photo which got pulled last time for all the colorful sailor speak on his scroll, so I blurred that out. if you wanna see what it says AND you are over 18 years of age, you can go to my Flickr account here.

Now the following is ALL in-progress. if you have suggestions for details, conversion-tweaks, or painting let me know.

for starters, all my unfinished infantry. I am painting them assembly-line style so they can all be done at the same time and so I don't have to keep switching paints so often. I currently have the primary and secondary colors added, on to boltgun metal. We also have from left to right in the front Angry James, introducing Angry Donald, and Angry Borris.

Now here we have Angry Dennis and his bike gang. these guys have been on the back burner since I don't have a use for them in my current force, but I will still finish them up and keep them handy until I get more bikes!

And here is some vehicles which I probably won't touch until all infantry and bikes are done. I got them from my brother who is getting rid of his old Chaos army. I got done scraping off all the chaos bits and apoxy conversions, and soon I will put some paint-remover on them. I am still thinking about what to do with these vehicles but here's my ideas:
PREDATOR: put an angry marine sticking out of the hatch brandishing a sword in one hand and a middle finger in the other.
DREADNOUGHT: I'll be modeling him just like Dirk the Jerk, and will replace his stormbolter with a heavy flamer. I still need to come up with a name for him, so any suggestions?
LANDRAIDER: there will be an angry marine with a powerfist punching his way out of the front hatch. also I am still thinking about converting this into a landraider crusader.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. A surprise I was saving until later, but here it is:

COME ON BOYS AND GIRLS, SING ALONG!

    size comparison

This beast is almost done, all that is left is some black lines for the plating. I would love to field this in an apocalypse game with the Rending Pony rules but I haven't found anyone crazy enough to face it. Oh well, I still wanna make some special objectives for it (giant star blocks, fairies, jumping dolphins, etc).

So there you have it! sorry for my absence, but luckily I found a way to keep making progress on these guys so I can get more done and not let this thread grind to a halt again. if you have any suggestions or critiques, please share!

    P.S.

Awesome Angry Marines. Out of all the stuff from /tg/ they have to be my favorite. If I ever see this army at a tournament, I would be hard pressed to stop laughing long enough to actually play the game.

your welcome. Also good eye, I did use the wood elf horse for this, and I just shaved off things like the saddle and plating on the legs, and I modified the head so the mouth was closed. I also used the green stuff apoxy for the hair and the horn.

but the funny thing is that I wanna make a new unicorn, since Adult Swim just released a new version of Robot Unicorn Attack and that unicorn looks fun to model!

I was using the Space Wolves Codex, and I still use it for kill teams, but I now use the Blood Angels codex, since that is a better representation of the Angry Marines (I mean come on, Death Company. and the fact that most squads have a chance to go into a state of blind rage [the red thirst]).

besides, there is already rules I can use, but I just need to tweak those so you can actually defeat it in a game.

Ahhhh, alright then. That does work out quite well, especially with the Angry Marines' fluff.

And...oh my, I just read the rules for rending pony. And yeah....but given the sheer level of awesomeness present in the Robot Unicorn, I would call it far and balanced as is.

-"Rending Pony may re-roll any to-wound rolls that are not 6 until they are 6"
, which means auto rend, all the time. I'd make it one re-roll, and the second result stays even if it is worse.
-"...Rending Pony may re-roll any failed save attempts", which to me reads as "re-roll until you pass." I'd make the wording clearer, or replace it with a "feel-no-pain" rule.

besides, the rending pony is a near-invincible killing machine, where the robot unicorn dies from simply crashing into a wall or forgetting to PRESS X TO DASH! I'd still like to play-test the unicorn to see if I need to tweak anything else for balancing's sake.

    Angry Marines Army @ 2010/10/20 02:36:42

    Post by: ChrisWWII

That kinda reminds me of the time my local GW ran a game which featured a reincarnated version of Horus (don't ask). He also kinda was a near invincible killing machine, and they kinda (ish) balanced by having him lose a point of toughness each turn he was on the table, hence he got easier to kill as time got on. Of course, I don't think he started off at T10....but maybe that could help with making rending pony a bit more balanced?

I'm almost tempted to say put in a rule where if Rending Pony does not kill a vehicle in assault then, it suffers ID because it forgot to press x to dash, and thus crashed and died. Tempted, but not gonna because that would be a very very silly type of thing to put in....

yeah I've seen it, I assume you mean this image:

In response, I don't think so, since this is an Angry Marine's army, not a sisters of anger army. (and I don't think this image or concept is very good, and neither do the folks at 1d4Chan [once again, NSFW] ) Not to mention that it's not as funny when you throw in Rule 63 into the mix. well shucks, don't know why that is acting up now, since that is how I have posted the other images. I'll have to fix those links soon.

But yeah, I would love to make a predator Angrinator! I am holding off on that until I finish off my terminators and new drop pods, and after I acquire a Stormraven.

I am also playing with the idea of eventually trading out this predator with a vindicator, modeled after the fabled Killdozer:

complete with rubble an' whatnot. But, you know, with the addition of a Demolisher cannon.
