Hi folks,
I'm a lapsed 40K gamer (have only had one game in the last 15+ years and started in the hobby about 20 years ago) but I've started gatting back into things and have started a new army. I still have some old figures but locked in the loft of a house we've rented out so I started over with new Imperial Guard. I'm starting a blog to keep me motivated with the painting - I don't much like doing it and I have extremely limted time for it (6 hour daily commute :( ) but it has to be done and hoepfully this will help me.
The units are mostly infantry at the moment, but I should be able to field some armour come the new year (hopefully the big red guy will bring some Chimeras ). For a bit of variety I have a mix of Cadian and Catachan figures (not in the same units) and I'm justifying that by assuming they represent light and heavy infantry types, since the rules now don't different between guard types this is purely fluff!
So far I've started a light squad, to which I've added a peaked cap head to the Sergeant, and straps to the vox caster - lack of them really bugged me for some reason. As you can see from the photo all the guys are going to have blue trousers and grey equipment (armour in the case of the Cadian types).
I've also started a Penal Legion using Cadian bodies and Hasslefree heads. The heads are a little small and lack ears (eh? what? ) but I think they'll look ok on the table top. Since I'm totally unoriginal, these will be orange and grey, and the Custodian is going to be based on the armour sprue commander figure armed with a cattle prod type implement.
To help me get back into the 40K groove, I've managed to finda few old figures knocking about in the last few days and so I've tried to assemble them just for fun...
Hopefully more painted figures soon, I'm clearing space on the workbench of all my other models (3mm, 6mm and 20mm historical) so I can work in more than a 6" space!

Ooh. RT Space marines. Nice.
I think you have an interesting color scheme for your IG. I didn;t think blue jeans survived into the 41st millennium.

Main reason the Hasslefree heads lack ears is because those heads are for sculpting purposes.

Thanks folks, I think I have about another 20 beakies locked in the attic of the old house along with a load of Harlequins and an Eldar dreadnought - might be able to get them in the NY. Now I know how to strip the paint from them there's every chance they'll be salvagable which is heart-warming.
Denim, haha yes I thought it looked a bit like that, but why not I guess it's hard wearing, although not so good when wet.
Re. the Hasslefree heads, I realise that's why they don't have ears and while I thought about adding some, I doubt it'd look that good with my skills. Maybe the punishments are harsh in this unit!

I would be interested in acquiring the harlequins if you were interested.

Really short of time again this week, so all I had time for was some base coating.
Did make three of these, which have really helped get light into the photos. Now just to get a tripod I can use in the small space of my painting room to solve my shaking hands problems.

Post by: Dysartes
You can get a mini-tripod, with legs at around 6" or less, quite cheaply, chief - might be what you're after.

Some nice ideas going on here. I think you should add scars where the Penal Legionnaires have lost their ears; perhaps they have them cut off in order to mark them as criminals.

Was all excited about scragging, and Owain stole my thunder! They're looking great, and it's nice to see someone else who is long lapsed blogging about it. Keep it up fella (I will if you will!)
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
Dysartes - Thanks for the suggestion and in fact I already have one a mini tripod, but what I need is a full height one with a heavy single foot to stand in the middle of the room on the floor. That way it's the right distance from the models for the lens I have.
Owain - I may do something like that, although to be honest I'm wondering how much people will notice at gaming distances if I left them earless?
inmygravenimage - Can't afford to stop now, I've probably spent as much on GW in the last few months as I did in several years last time - although £10 for 30 marines made things cheaper!
I've been mulling ideas re Ripper guns for my Ogryn Squad (going down the WHFB Ogre route). I was thinking since the IG seem to go for standardisation on weapons (the shotguns sharing stocks and grips with the lasguns) that the Rippers may be made using parts already in production for other weapons. I'm going to try and use heavy bolters with an extra barrel and a belt feed , what does anyone think?
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
Ok so with the help of a bit of photoshop, this is what I had in mind for the Ripper gun, a kind of double barrelled shot in a Heavy Bolter case.
On Friday my first ever Forgeworld order arrived, so it was a good surprise, well cast easy to work with and the extra level of detail that most GW plastic box kits lack.
I just got the Cadian Veterans pack for now as I've enough painting backing up, but here's the work so far. Some heads are off as they make painting some of the models harder when fitted. The missing 2 squad members are Meltagun troops and I just haven't assembled them yet.
Since the pack only has enough shotguns for 5 troops, and I needed a sixth I used the cut off grip and stock to make another shotgun in some kind of holster - not sure if it really works or not.
here was my take on a Vet Sgt.
Also found time to work on these guys:
The two finished ones will be dullcoted once the bases are done to take away the shine of the floor polish wash I use.
Picked up these click together guard last week too, they aren't great being a solid version of one of the other Cadians, and the ring for the clip in arms is rather large. I bought them to bulk out my final squad so they may not get much table time anyway so it's probably not worth worrying about.
21358
Post by: Dysartes
I don't think I've seen the clip-together Cadians before, Lavuran - where were they from?
8745
Post by: Llamahead
What brand and type of floor wax do you use I've heard it being mentioned for washes before and was wondering?
7632
Post by: Ghost in the Darkness
the clip together Cadians were made by GW. They produced a whole bunch of boxes where you could get 3 or so guys for an army to try out new paint schemes or to bulk out squads.
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
Floor polish is Johnson Klear (sold as Future in some places).
As said the clip together guys are GW, you get five lasgun troops for five pounds so slightly cheaper than the regular ones if you don't want all the extra bits i.e. if you just want normal troops. I think I may remove the mounting lug on mine, file off the stupid mounting ring and fill the hole.

But really, that is freakin awesome, if you have any extra bits of the squats, about one whole squats worth, then please, learn how to make moulds and sell them on the internet. Since GW discontinued them, you could call them anything and sell them as generic gaming pieces.

Llamahead: I mix some black paint with the Klear in an old glass jar until it's the consistency I want, the advantage of which is I can reseal the jar and it lasts ages!
Scrazza: Thanks
Brotheralexos: Alas he's the last of his kind, all I have left in the bits box are some broken Squat arms.
AnotherSpaceMarine: The seem to have been made from the same scultps as the normal IG except with the addition of a pouch under the left arm, but I'd avoid them tbh the amount of work I will need to do doesn't really merit the saving (which is small anyway).
jackvolerich: Agreed but I needed 9 baldy heads (since I wanted the RT look of the penal legions) so choices were limited.

Quick post before I have to stop painting to have time with the family:
Light Company RTO: Base needs to be finished but I'm debating changing from the gray/ash bases. Also sorry for some of the fuzziness, camera batteries were almost out- need to charge them before tomorrow.
Another Penal Legion guy:
Merry Christmas everyone!

Sorry I broke the picture links the other week, I screwed up a firewall setting so my webserver wasn't visible on the net - doh!
I've redone my basing scheme to add some rubble - good tip from the net to use bits of chopped up sprue!
The first Veteran
First Penal trooper to be completed on the new base:
Penal squad is about 50% completely painted but only one has a completed base.
I'm trying to get my guard army done before I head abroad for a year in a few months. Would be a good way to meet wargamers when I arrive if I have an army ready to go.

I can definitely tell that you are a RT-2nd era gamer by the bright colors you paint your miniatures with! Not saying it's a bad thing, quite to the contrary! I like the brighter colors, they are very interesting in the world of IG-muted-colors.
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
captain.gordino: It's some manly scars...or possibly some overly heavy wash application. btw what's the gaming scene like in Calgary? Just asking as I may head back there later this year depending on where I get work on my year abroad.
The Good Green: Thanks, simple is the main thing because I paint slowly and need to see things getting finished to avoid losing motivation.
FoxPhoenix135: Bright colours are what brought me back to 40K. I spent most of the time since last playing WH40K on 20th century "historical" wargames and I'd become rather tired of the muted tones of real uniforms . I felt like I really needed to return to something where I could be creative in my colour schemes, and that's actually increased my enjoyment of painting which I normally class as the necesary evil of wargaming.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been working lots of hours and doing the commute from hell - 6 hours plus each day. Then I managed to get a work visa for a year in Canada so that's taking up most of my spare time now, clearing the house and sorting my affairs so I can head to Vancouver in June!
Anyway in order to pack up the work room I progressed a few projects to help clear the bench (there's a load of guard to clear too..fingers crossed I get some more time:
This was a guy I found when clearing out my old WHFB figures, going to use him as an Inquisitorial Crusader
the demon I won on ebay, his wings are primed and repaired, but I'm not sure if I'll bother finishing him, or just wait until I return.

A month on and a little progress!
I've been packing up the guard to go into storage, so I've only had a chance to finish up a few more Penal Legion guys but no piccies. I've also started a CSM army that will be heading otu with me in June. Here's the first completed miniature: (well 3rd completed one if you count that this has fallen off the table twice and broken just as soon as I get into ready for photographing! :( )
Not sure if I'll keep him on the big base or put him on a 40mm one. I like the bigger base but since he's a CC guy I reckon the bigger base will be detrimental - thoughts anyone? Right now he's not been glued back onto this base since his trip off the table so I'ts an easy swap.
Also did this guy, who needs the base finishing off and some dullcote. Either going to use him for Marbo or in my Inquisitorial Retinue. He's an old IG with a RTB01 Space Marine head. Too bad the photo is poor and you can't see his camo.

so far its looking pretty awesome,i cant believe youve had a fifteen year gap and still come back as sharp as this.i loved seeing the old school minis in particular the old orc(hero quest if im not mistaken).
keep up the good work its inspirational.
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
Shattered Soul: Thanks, yep the heads are true 28mm IIRC, but options are limited if you want a number of baldies!
Thamor: It's just builder's sand pva glued onto the base. I thin the glue with a little water so you just paint in on then dip the model into the sand tub. After that paint the sand granite grey colour, wash that with my floor wax - black paint mix, then dry brush a lighter grey. The lumps of masonary are just bits of sprue painted a drab colour.
shingouki: Thanks, trying hard! To be fair I've done lots of other modelling in the gap so I shouldn't be as bad as I was when I stopped 40K LOL. Yup the ork is from Heroquest. I think I got him in a box of stuff from a mate who had already converted him to 40K. Needless to say by the time I dug him out last year he needed a complete rework.

1st page, 2nd to last picture, the ork boy front row on the right is not from 40k...
I would recognize those minis anywhere.
Heroquest.
Old school RPG with cardboard doors and bookshelves, plastic goblins, skeltons, orcs, mummies, zombies and even plastic furniture. Fun game.
In the picture right above the ork boyz, I think even that severed arm on the base of the guy standing next to the squat is chopped from a Heroquest skeleton...could be wrong though.
I too have been using some of those minis to modify and change into 40k worthy troops. I'll post some pics soon. Lets just say though, mine got bit with the genestealer virus...

Post by: LavuranGuard
You are correct re the Orc, he's from HQ, but of course he's a Citadel miniature too, since they did the scultping for Milton Bradley. He used to belong to a friend of mine who converted him for 40k, but by the time I found him again last year after been packed away for over a decade he'd lost the bits my friend had added and had to be re-equipped.
Sadly you only score 1 out of 2 though, the arm is from the old GW Skeleton Horde/Army models, which are still some of my favourite models. That's probably because they were my first GW models way back in December 1989!
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
I've actually done some more IG modelling!!!!
Here's the start of my conscript beastmen squad, I need to GS up the leg joins and the horn to head joins, but some far it's going well. The running one has the legs from the Gor that has its feet together so much cutting was needed to get them off, and thus there's a fair bit of damage to be puttied over.
Another project on slow burn are my rough riders, the first horse for which I've been testing out with some "stowage" and painting ideas

Small update - work on my Rough Riders here's a mix of Cadian, Empire Outriders parts with the Col Gravis scultped legs. The horse is not the final one for this figure, the actual one is more dynamic and fits the wind blown coat better. While putting this together I had an old Airfix cavalry model I had in mind (a Hussar?). I Still need to add some green stuff around to make the coat look like its attached to the armour (or add a tie from side of the coat to the other)
Here's a very early stage of a WIP for an Arbites Rhino - I've started on some roof lights and a set of bull bars - it's the LPAD (Lavura Prime Arbites Detachment)
Oh and all the old photos have gone offline because my photo server has died, hopefully it'll be fixed when I next return to the UK for a visit.

23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
The Rough Riders have been waiting for lances, so no progress there, but I have been working on my DE as I'm using them in a tournament in a few weeks.
First up is my Sslyth (mixture of Catachan, Wych, Helion, Beastman and Lizardman parts)
An extra Kabalite Warrior made from one of the Vyper crew men (lots of cutting and GS work) with a head from the old DE Warriors and arms from the new ones. Still need to add shoulder pads bits to match my other DE warriors - all the old style.
Here my first of 10 Helions, still needs dullcote, but done otherwise.
On the non DE front - found this old guy whilst visting my parents, so I've been fixing him up to use as a servitor with multi-melta. Must have had this figure for almost 20 years.
This is a quick conversion I did tonight from a spare VSS and a left over BP from the Canoness blister. The powersword arm has been replaced by the BP, and the Fleur de Lys on the helmet has been filed off to make a helmeted Seraphim.
Last few pics - Got 3 of the bad boys built the other week (paulson grotesques) and very nice they are too!
And this guy, who has now been completely finished may have got me my first commission work, which is very flattering but I've no idea what to charge for a duplicate of this guy plus Grimaldus and his retinue - any suggestions?

The warrior still needs a fair bit of work - and now I've taken photos I can see some other flaws too which I'll have to rectify. I'm really glad I could make him as he completes my last squad of warriors - I needed 10 in each to get the heavy weapon).

Not sure how I missed this blog before- great stuff! I always enjoy finding another practitioner of 'toyhammer/modelhammer' and seeing how they use real-world kits and toys to make warhemmer vehicles; your conversions are terrific.
I absolutely love the Ork Kommanda in the turret hatch of the Skullhamma- you can tell he's trying as hard as he can to look all indifferent and contemptuous- just like and Imperial Commisar- but, being an Ork, being very uncomfortable doing so (against his better nature, as it were). He must have seen a picture somewhere, to emulate!
Keep up the very good work!
Been through the whole blog now- some great work! Using the M3 Half-tracks as your fleet vehicle to replace the standard Chimera hull was genius- I'm assuming 1/35 scale? Oftentimes these are too big (even at 1/48th) to mix with GW vehicles- but the uniform and standard way you've equipped them and employed them for every frame, from troop carrier to Deathstrike propulsion unit, makes it work. Nice chipping/weathering effects too- hard for me to do even with subdued colors, harder still, I think, with a bright red like you've used. But it works.
I look forward to seeing what's next.

Quality madness. You're a freaking machine!
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
Meer_Cat, thanks for the kind words, and yes I agree that's exactly what the Ork looks like.
The half tracks are 1/35, and so are bit long and thin, but take up roughly the same area as a Chimera, but rule of cool etc. GW seems to do 1/35 width with 1/48 length so its vehicles are a bit oddly proportioned, its the problem of bulky, out of proportion figures.
Graven, I am a machine, but this is catching up on 6 years of work Automatically Appended Next Post: So here's my Gargant. It was bought on Ebay, and made by what I assume was a talented, but tool-lacking youngster. Construction was good, but not durable and ringbinder hole punch sized rivets were too big for me.
Removal of rivets begins
Armour plates get over covered with platicard sections, and smaller rivets are applied
Oh so many rivets! I also add some Gubbinz at the back, some walkways and a shoulder mounted observation platform, like the old epic version. I also convert the belly gun into a single barrled but bigger gun.
#
On the other shoulder I build a turret, like a battlewagon one, but a little bigger
I take a few moment to start batch building similar turrets for my MegaGargant
better pic of the observation area
Some extra Shootas
Painting begins
Painting done, except for the CC arms, which has since been completed, but no pics yet/

Love those last two Ork conversions, and the painting style on them. Really nice.
It reminded me of someting, and I couldn't place it for a bit, but I think it might be the Boarderlands video game and how they present buildings/vehciles. Could just imaging a tank like that rolling out.
Edit: I was writing this as the Gargant pics went up, that is awesome. Surpasses Boarderlands

Thanks, never really played Borderlands - wish I had more time for PC gaming these days, but heard good things about it.
In the meantime, here's some WIP pics of my Megagargant, which is only slightly more advanced than these pics, and is currently in my loft in a parked state.

That's all sorts of epic. When I first got back into the hobby I built a baneblade from foam core. Very satisfying, haven't done anything on that scale since.
23014
Post by: LavuranGuard
ah yes, the old WD plans. IIRC the Armorcast Baneblade chassis I used above is scaled to those plans.
Ok switching to a modern project for a bit, I have a few 3d printers now, so I'm working on 2 of these. This one is imperial and built using some out of date stl files, hence needs some modelling to complete, and another for my 30k Traitor forces. Pics as they are now in the next few.

Alas, currently trying to reprint the carapace parts and they are proving to be a pain for the second one - print issues. I have a better printer on the way but it won't be up and running anytime soon as July is super busy for me.

and while we wait for me to get some urls together for an update, here's another current WIP, 3d printed Armigers with beefier guns. these guys are a mix of resin and filament printing.

Green is Vallejo USMC Tank Crew green, pin washed with Army Painter Dark Tone, then over painted with the above green mixed with white.
And for today, more Sons,
Vindicator using Puppetswar bits, notice some Word Bearer has already started sneaking 8 pointed stars onto things...

Captain, we're catching up on 6+ years of painting, so it's looking more impressive than it is, basically everything I've done 40k wise since I left BC.
youwashock, thanks, about to post up some more SoH, then we'll go on to sharing some of the other stuff for Orks and Eldar I haven't revealed yet (other than on my blog)

Post by: LavuranGuard
thanks all! It's fast because we're playing catch up on the last few months/years...it'll slow down eventually!
Graven, thanks for the offer, I have one of those somewhere too - the one with 2 clumps of tubes? I'm thinking of using that for a Scorpius.
Currently spending a lot of time thinking about my list for the team event at Adepticon next year. My girlfriend is taking her Dark Eldar, so I'm thinking about CWE or Harlequins, but can't settle on a list. Also team member #3 is only a maybe and we're still short of #4...and then we need a theme...
In the meanwhile, since Chaos knights are currently cool..
One's printed at a much higher resolution, hence less grainy

thanks everyone - definitely a blast from the past. As a kid I think we had painted this one in a bright green from Humbrol with yellow armour...nasty!
been away for a week, so nothing new has been painted, just a few things 3d printed, but I'll show those when they have some paint on them. In the meanwhile, some of my older rpg figures from the last few years. I like having a large stash of stuff to share, means I can keep this updated without killing myself to paint new stuff.
Reaper Bones an Aviatrix (not sure of the proper name for this model). Painted for Call of Cthulhu, Hollow Earth or Spriti of the Century - I forget which.

Been super busy working on a few cool 3d printed projects, but no pics yet, in the meantime!
A toy dinosaur, given a quick paint touch up and based for Hollow Earth Expedition
Not amazing, but quick and cheap way to get creatures for those lost world type games.
Also this, Reaper Bones mini on a laser cut plinth, made fopr a mate who fell in battle

Toy Dino would be great for Gaslands wastelands. Hmmm...

Big tub of them from B&M, pretty cheap. Out of scale ones go to the kids
Hopefully more 40k in a few days, in the meantime, an old Pathfinder figure, Drow Priestess. Wish I hadn't given away all the scenario, maps etc that came with this set of figures, when I wasn't playing Pathfinder.

Ok still no time for painting, but I have been printing like crazy, and I have some time off in Sept and Oct whilst between jobs so should get some painting done then.
Start of an airforce
Leviathan, downsized to Baneblade-ish size for ease of storage. Still need to remove the supports on the rear top, and arround the tracks.
'Tau-riffic' bits for a new set of table terrain

Scary talented chap. Incidentally, did you see that Mad Cars have released an STL of one of their cars for free for Gaslands? Very snazzy.

Post by: LavuranGuard
Hope so, it's a real pain to clean up. It's from Thingiverse, but massively scaled up from the Epic model. Need to print he other hlaf and then the details, but each side is a 30 hour print at fairly low fidelity.
Hadn't seen that STL, wonder if it can be scaled for Route 666?

I thought Armorcast was originally from Northern California maybe not? Someone on Dakka will know the history and correct me I'm sure.
Anecdotally I bought my first Armorcast model, (secondhand Cauldron of Blood) when I lived in Vancouver, but I think they seller told me he'd bought it from someone who'd moved over from the UK...so it's gone full circle with me.
