Please dont flame me for asking this but I have noticed over the last few weeks some of the Avatars have started to get quite riskee. Dont get me wrong, I love a half naked woman as much as the next guy but 2 issues come up:
1). Many of us try to read these forums while at work. If this trend continues most of us will have to stop. Its not so much an issue of being monitored because the pic wont come up in most tracking programs, however if the avatar is on the screen when a woman walks in and she is offended, then the individual viewing the page is at risk of Disciplinary action and possible loss of job.
2). There are many under aged viewers to you website. If Dakka allows this type of avatar then eventually they may be required to set an age limit on the website if someone complains.

Please note I am not complaining about the avatars. Personally I love boobs (sorry women only boobs hehe) but am concerned with several of the legalities that come up with this type of pic. I no longer look at the site while at work as I dont like the risk and I dont want to see any one else get in any kind of trouble because of it.

I say this website is perfectly work safe, if this does not suffice.
Hivefleet offers both the problem and solution.

In my oppinion, mammaries are not the problem, strange morals are.

Post by: Fishboy

Thanks Hive, I was not aware that was an option and will do that on my profile to prevent any issues.

Not sure why it is a strange morals issue Bla_Ze. I can tell you that with office politics what they are in America (land of the lawsuit) this can be a real issue.

It's a good reminder to be careful with avatars. A few are getting close to the line, and everyone should be aware of the option to switch them off.

Risky Avatars @ 2009/12/14 17:04:31

Post by: Kilkrazy

The moderators discussed several of the avatars, some of which were submitted for approval by the user before they were allowed on the site.

While we did not draw up a specific code of conduct, the basic rules applied are that the nipples and genitals have to be covered up and the pose of the characters should not be overtly sexual.

I think there are one or two avatars around which are in danger of going outside those limits and probably ought to be looked at again. (I'm looking at you, Hivefleet.)

The age level of the site is 12+. The kind of pictues now being used are no worse than would be seen on the cover of a non-top shelf magazine such as Loaded or Maxim. From a general societal view, they are acceptable for accidental public viewing by all ages.

Bikini models could be NSFW in a strict environment.

Reading any non-work related forum could be NSFW in some work environments.

Both those issues are really between you and your management, rather than Dakka's responsibility, I reckon.

As Hivefleet said, there is the option to switch off avatars and this solves the immediate problem.

I can understand your concerns on the riskee avatars, but heck I work in a GOV't building and post with this one which meets all of dakkas rules for avatars, and really I have no problems. I work in an office with all femals, and myself and one other individuals are male. Then 7 women, and if they have no problem then I feel I have no problem. As long as I stay within the guide lines it is afterall just an avater.

Pfft.

There are no 'naughy bits' being shown, so it's the same as swimsuits.

Actually, I think the avatars show *less* than what a Wicked Weasel would show...

Anyhow, as an American, it is your right to be prudishly shocked with by what the rest of the world views as normal.

And, finally, my kid saw bare boobs every day for over a year, despite being the very definition of "underage" (i.e. counting age in months, not years).

Of course, for him, it was food, not play, but nevertheless...

The problem I have with these new Avatars is I identify posters who I usually skim by Avatar. Now my eye is immediately drawn to these new sexy avatars, I can't even read the posters name.

I browse a couple of forums during my lunch break, but wouldn't browse Dakka as I can get carried away if I get caught up in a thread
Besides, my work blocks Dakka anyway along with most other wargaming sites as it has a blanket block/ban on any website with GAMES in the main keywords; that includes GW main site, but not Bitzbox for some reason So I'm safe from work based booby problems

agreed, they're all completely naked. the internet doesn't bother with scantily clad anymore. those innocent days of cindy margolis are long gone. in honor of the new dakka holiday tradition of faux xmas porn, i've decided to make a custom avatar. i took two video game vixens (one in a bikini, the other in a nightslip) from one of my favorite games and put some santa hats on them. if they come down your chimney, they're not looking for cookies!

Thats the problem with any forum, a dodgy avatar can be on there for quite some time until a mod notices or it gets reported. I would say that pretty much all the avatars on here are harmless, especialy the ones with half naked lovelies (like mine lol).

In fact there are probably employers out there who are more concerned by avatars showing pictures of evil gods and blood thirsty deamons than a girly with her midrift exposed

The only way for people to avoid getting into trouble for using the internet at work is to wait until you get home to log on, annoying but at least you won't loose your job because of an argument about the differences between dwarves and gnomes

Where youngsters are concerned, it's the internet, if they want to look at boobies they will find them despite parental controls, failing that they can just check behind the bath panel, where dad keeps his "gentlemans special interst magazines"

Your avatar is not bad at all. A woman in a bikini? I'm sorry, what kind of prudish people are we dealing with here? You can see women in bikinis if you go to a beach in summer, how do they handle that situation?

Now I'm reminded about this cryptic message a few weeks back about my avatar...

Anyone who sees it thinks of it, but that gal really does look as if she's suggesting something...

I've not got a clue what he's talking about. My avatar has Lara Croft enjoying an ice lolly, but the lad who sent me this is only 16 so I guess he's got it on the brain.

Seriously though. Do you really work in places of employment where you are monitored so closely that someone would notice a 100x100 image alongside a giant block of text and other images? I'm not trying to be snide; I'm genuinely curious to hear that there are places like that out there. Even when my coworkers come over to talk to me, I can have dakka up on the other screen and no one says a word, though I generally minimize it out of politeness to the person (Never know when lurking in the P&M forums is going to get you pictures of naked daemonesses). And yes, about half my coworkers are female, and I get walk ups quite often.

I am the "GIT" that brookem was talking about. If someone walks by my computer and sees a racy pic it immediately makes them wonder why I have that up on my computer at all, and what kind of site I am on that has pictures like that. If someone walks by and sees a giant wall of text they think that that is boring and they no longer care. If they see a picture of some "toys" thatare painted they think I am silly an weird, no harm done.

I can tell you that the US has a much more strict (too strict) sens of what you can and can't do at the work place. Looking at scantily clad women is not one of the things you can do.

Unfortunately the US is still stuck in the age of the puritans, who have had their prudishness taken up by the religious right. It's fine to watch SAW I- VI but for God's sake, don't let a kid see a naked tit (unless of course it's getting hacked off by a crazy serial killer, then it's A-OK!).

I loved the shampoo commercials I saw on TV when I lived in France... If the commercials were like that in the US I'd watch them instead of skipping over them.

I think that the point you're missing is that skantily clad women are appropriate for the beach, and not for an office environment, particularly one where people may disagree on their appropriateness. It's not the appropriateness that is at issue, it's that conflicts may arise over disagreements about appropriateness.

Dakka Dakka isn't appropriate for an office environment either.

No, I got that point. And I cant name a single workplace that ive ever been in that didn't have something of equal value or worse either tacked up on the wall, framed on a desktop, or on a computer as a screensaver.

What is blocked at work:

40K Online.
Warseer.
Librarium Online.
Bolter and Chainsword.
Tau Online.
Bell of Lost Souls.
Google Images.
Any other sort of blogs.

Strangely enough, what is allowed:

DakkaDakka

I turned my Avy and Sigs off at work, no biggie.

See, its that simple. Instead of being a humbug and trying to ruin the fun for everyone else on Dakka, just turn your damn avatars and sigs off on the work cpu.

**EDIT**
Wait a second, You are worried cause you can't look at Dakka while you are at work? Shouldn't you be working instead anyway?!?!

This discussion reminds me of this one guy on an old forum I used to visit. His avatar was randomly selected each time you loaded it from a pool of dozens, each one an animated pair of boobs. None of this "think of the children!" lark over there.

I joined because one of the subforums was for a webcomic I used to read, but apart from that it was mainly general discussion. There was a pretty good roleplay section though.

Unfortunately the US is still stuck in the age of the puritans, who have had their prudishness taken up by the religious right

Little off there. It is more of the liberal political correctness crap that has been going around for years. Companies dont want to be sued so they dont allow anything to happen there heh.

But yes I turned off my Avatars at work so it is not an issue for me anymore. Once I realized I could do that problem solved but I still think some sensitivity to the issue is wise.

I honestly have no problem with the risque avatars on this site. It's not like you don't see it on everything from cartoons to commercials. I have only seen one (very) questionable avatar on this site. I won't be an ass and say the person's username but I will note that their avatar involves the display of *cough* goatse.

Really, the avatars are no worse then what you would see anywhere else. Hell, I work at a library and we have stuff in the way of movies, books and magazines that is far worse then what I am seeing here. So if my library carries stuff worse then what I am seeing on here, it's not that bad...IMHO of course.

*Sorry keep finding spelling errors*

Yes, I agree, more "risky" avatars.

Too many girls though, we need some more naked men to balance things out. Luna's got the right idea, more "hunk du jour" please.

I won't be an ass and say the person's username but I will note that their avatar involves the display of *cough* goatse.

@Sid: did you not see the "Naked Man" Barney avatar above?

Having just one such avatar probably skews the avatar ratio well out of proportion to the likely M:F ratio of this site.

@JohnHwang You would look this up.

Risky Avatars @ 2009/12/20 04:19:38

Post by: JohnHwangDD

There's no need to look it up, as it's a non-scientific comment made in jest.

That said, 40k is well known to skew heavily male, so the likely M:F ratio is likely something like 10:1, while the "sexy" avatar ratio is probably more than 10:1.

But as I said, it was made in jest. I have no interest in trying to prove or disprove any of it.

If you can't take the joke, sorry.

All those places are running in danger of a sex discrimination case.

In little workshops and garages you can probably get away with it. Corporates have to be a lot more careful.

Its the ones containing GW images. You'll all get 'cease and desists' from GW leagal before 2010 is out, mark my words.
