Euurrghh yeah and an emergency repair bill. Yuck. Had my roof replaced this summer it was a right faff and know how you feel about water in wiring personally I'd avoid using it until it drys out if it can be helped. For the kans maybe some of the more recent desert camos might be worth a look as well?

Heh, I'm also sitting on three of those Kans for ages now, they've been primed leadbelcher and given a wash of nuln oil, but that's about it really. I do want to do details, but I don't want it to pop too much or look too much out of place.
Will be looking forward to your solution on this, though seeing these in some sort of camo pattern would be neat.
Seeing as these are done up by grots, it could be a crude but still elaborate pattern that they've copied from Imperials or the like.

Wow, didn't know the weather got that bad down under. I mean, intellectually I knew it must sometimes, but I never hear about it here (of course). Hope your home is okay when its done.
I do like the Killa Kans so far. They'd look okay in the desert camo like you did for those Boyz. Also, is there going to be a separate thread for the December challenge thing? I know you've got your hands full with the rain and all, but I thought I'd ask and see what's going on for that.

I am pretty sure I owe you a Necron Monolith.......which now I am done with the Dwarfs I can actually start to paint (plus I am soon to be on my very brief Christmas holidays).

Here's that Dec 6th Update:
Sorry about the lack of updates. I’ve got gak happening IRL of pretty much the worst kind. I’m also not keeping up on other people’s blogs properly, nor am I much good at replying. I’m just dropping in and out almost randomly depending on how I feel at that exact moment on both reading and commenting. I’ll talk about the situation later, but for the time being, I’m trying to stay sane by working a lot and doing a little bit of painting.
Working on Mamon Transfigured from Forge World, and a little on the metal GUO.
I’m not especially happy with the rusted barrel. It looks too much like a red barrel rather than a rusted one. I’m aware that the WIP lighting is kinda gakky, though – so you can’t see it properly. I’ll see how it looks once more of the daemon is done, and tweak from there.
Others doing the Painting Decembuary thing so far are:
Zergsmasher is painting Mortarion.
Imperial Rebel Ork aka IRO via Wordpress.
Working on a converted Ogre/Ogor/Mournfang Stonehorn.
We’ve had a few other people (both on WordPress and Dakka) pledge to start, though IRO and Zerg are the only ones I know of that have started posting so far. I’ll include people’s updates in the above form when I do new Decembuary posts.
If you're a regular to this plog, you can go to the Wordpress site and check the 12th December post. I don't really want to repost that stuff on Dakka, or in the "forum" format, and I'm ...not really able to go through and edit it down for Dakka-format. I haven't even been able to look at that post again TBH. Maybe in a couple more days.
If you're not a regular here, then feel free to skip. I'll post the model pics here soon enough.

So I recently painted a pair of Primaris Marines in Celestial Lions livery.
Base coats were all sprays, followed by an all-over wash of Reikland Fleshshade Gloss. Armour drybrushed with Retributor Armour then Liberator Gold and then a tiny bit of Model Air Gold mixed in. Blue panels painted with Vallejo "Ultramarine" blue coloured surface primer, washed with thinned down Vallejo Game Air 72.720 Imperial Blue, then re-highlighted with Vallejo Game Colour Ultramarine Blue, then highlighted with thinned VGA 72.724 Electric Blue.
Aquilas done with Vallejo Model Colour Dark Grey, then highlighted with a couple of greys, washed with Nuln Oil Gloss then highlighted again on the edges with Army Painter Warpaints Ash Grey. Weapons done with Dark Grey, then edge highlighted with Citadel Incubi Darkness, washed with Nuln Oil Gloss, then re-highlighted on extreme edges with Incubi Darkness again. Probably too subtle to actually see, but it is what it is. Leather done with VMA 71.042 Camo Black Brown spot washed with Nuln Oil Gloss, then highlighted with That VMA brown I use for everything and the code and name have worn off the label. I know which one it is, though.
To designate the models as Lieutenants, I used VII Legion decals from the Imperial Fists HH transfer sheet on their right kneepads. I also added tiny "Fists" shields to their left pauldrons, along with a Maltese Cross on the right pauldron of one, and the backpack of the other, to represent their brotherhood with the Black Templars. The Lieutenant's helmet stripe I left without the white bars to show consistency with the Crimson Fists style of helmet stripe. Yes, I missed the fact that they're supposed to have 40mm bases, but these figures ain't being rebased or fethed around with.
The lion-head Chapter icons came from Matrillo Y Cola on Shapeways. They're not nearly as detailed in hand as they appear on the webpage, so I had to paint in the dividing line between the lion's chin and their mane, and also the eye. Still, they work well enough and give consistency better than freehanding the icons would.
Since I have also been painting Minotaurs, I wanted to ensure that the Celstial Lions were as easily distinguished from the Minos as possible. To that end, the gold here is much brighter and "oranger" - and washed with Fleshshade than the pale brass of the Minos, which is made from sepia washes over silver, later washed with green. The "dark grey" aquilas could easily have been done in metallic tones, but again I went with non-metallic greys as the Minos have theirs in metallics.
Painting these was a smooth process, and actually quite enjoyable and relaxing. I'll be doing some more pretty soon, but I've got a bunch of squads that were started years ago that I want to complete before starting new ones.

Gah! I hate Primaris, but I really am impressed with that scheme you've done! the gold done like that is very different and really looks neat and almost a bone finish until you get the glimmer of gold on the panels and it just pops! looks fantastic and I also really love the look of the darker skin choice for the bare head, that just works like a charm :-) I hope your Christmas season gets better Az, I really do! I know you've had a difficult year and you're such a great guy I'd hate to see you have anything bad happen to you or your family, so you have my blessings and I wish you all the best mate.

Thank you guys, these figures mean a lot to me.
Oddly, the plasticky-looking gold is an accident, especially given that all of the paints used are metallics, the only thing that's not being the gloss wash.

Lovely work, especially the Celestial Lions. It's pretty rare for me to get excited about Space Marines, but you've really taken advantage of the bigger canvas afforded by the Primaris format to just add a little more detail and variety of shade, while still keeping them recognisable as loyalist Space Marines by the relative simplicity of their look.
I will be starting painting in your Decembuary challenge imminently -- probably Xmas Day or Boxing Day. I've had a shedload of work handed to me over the Xmas holiday (getting paid for it but it's still way more than I want to be doing this time of year). But my daughter arrives for her Xmas visit in about half an hour and we plan to do a bunch of painting and watching movies for the next week or so.

IIRC there's a cool behind the scenes story. The Celestial Lions were someone's home brew chapter taking advantage of Lion transfers from fantasy. Someone made fun of their stupid name (dumber than Space Wolves?) and wrote them into the Armageddon campaign. On one hand they all got killed but on the other they really got a heroic backstory.

Thank you gents. I'm working on a squad of "regular" Lions now that I started on Christmas day and would have gotten finished quickly if not for life's distractions - hopefully they'll be done in a few days.
In the interim, here's some figures I finished just after the Lions:
I’d be showing off the whole squad, but some of the initial photos turned out blurry. So… half of them it is.
This squad of Deathwatch Space Marines were started sometime after their rules were first published in White Dwarf 306, back in the mid-noughties. As with so many of my projects, I got a certain way through before getting distracted or what have you, and like many of them, I’ve dug these models out of a figure case a few months ago and gotten them finished in the last week.
I needed something to work on after completing the pair of Celestial Lions recently, as I needed to have something to continue working on. These had been sitting on my desk for ages, mostly forlorn after being rebased onto 32mm bases, and so they have been my focus in the last few days. And now they’re done.
This model originally had a chapter badge from …some transfer sheet or another. A skull with crossed lighting bolts or some such. It was pretty generic, but at least it worked for some Space marine chapter that wasn’t one of the big, well known ones. This model is from 1995/6, known at the time as Veteran Sergeant 1 with Bionic Eye, he’s been given a metal Deathwatch Shoulder Pad and Bolter added onto a 2nd Ed plastic marine arm, and a 3rd ed plastic backpack. The Lion-head icon again comes from Matrillo Y Cola on Shapeways.
Given recent events, when I came to try and finish this guy off, he was an easy induction into the Celestial Lions, especially given that his face and hair were already done. In a sense it furthers the tribute but more importantly it makes what was a pretty generic marine a little more meaningful to me – and I’d always liked how his face and complexion turned out, most of which is unfortunately lost in these photos. (It looks pretty average in that top photo!)
This next guy is the first of my Deathwatch that I completed. He was even kinda-completed when I fished him and his brothers out of that figure case, but he then needed rebasing, some additional work on his weapon and re-highlighting on his armour using Vallejo Panzer Aces 309 Periscopes – which is an idea I stole off a guy here on Dakka (sorry, forgot who's name!)because his Deathwatch looked great with it as the highlight colour instead of the usual greys.
Periscopes works especially well for me, as I’ve got a few different types of black-armoured marines going now (Legion of the Damned, Black Templars, plus more to come) and it allows for black armour with a very different feel, rather than more of the same. The model here is simply a 3rd Ed plastic marine using the metal Deathwatch parts (head, bolter, shoulder).
As with the Lion above, this guy was originally to be from some unknown, unnamed chapter. I may have come up with chapter and character names, and some fluff for these guys, but as I’ve said, the models were conceived a decade ago, and so that kind of stuff is now lost to time. While I’m able to paint at the moment, thinking up imaginative background isn’t my forte at the best of times, and right now I have no chance of concentrating well enough to create any…
So here we are. If anyone has an interesting chapter name for me to slap onto this guy, I’ll certainly consider it. I’ll try and get the others up soon, without any blurriness.
I'll try and get a Painting Decembuary update done in the next few days as well. I know a lot of people (not me) have been working hard on their models for it lately.

Awesome Az! looking really good, can you tell me how you did the black? I'm going to have a shot at it since it looks great! is it one highlight or multiple and washes?

Post by: Azazelx
You know I had to look up Simon Phoenix - I've never seen Demolition Man, but it's a cool reference. The Primaris are solidly taller than the regular marines, but I can see them fitting in together pretty well since we already have Terminators and Centurions in the mix (not to mention 30 years of scale creep!. I'll get some comparison shots up soonish.
The black is simply black, with Vallejo Panzer Aces "periscopes" first in a thin blend coat around the edges, then a sharper/more solid go-over on selected edges.
Here's the completed squad. I managed to get outside to retake the blurry photos, so here we go:
This is Librarian Edinorog. He originally hails from the "Monokera Rampant" chapter of Space Marines (both names subject to change). He took fething forever to paint, because he's so covered in so much fiddly bling. I painted his eyes in white, and used Nihlakh Oxide to give them that glowing "caster about to do something psychic" look.
Again, the figure used here is an old one. A Librarian model "Lexicanium 1" from 1995/6, he's another model who had had a long journey in getting started (around 2006) and another decade on top to be complete (end 2017). Though these days a Librarian would not be a leader (or member) of the squad, so I'll have to build and paint another Deathwatch Veteran to make this little group legal. Or another six.
The sword was painted with the bluish teal shade I've been using for power swords, but I was unsatisfied with it. I tried to fix it by subtle criss-crossing it with thin lines of silver, but then it just looked messy. So I added a thinned down coat of Transparent Green from Warcolours to try and give it a different look that still fit a power sword. It turned out darker than I'd wanted, but I still think it turned out quite decent.
Once again, the Deathwatch parts added to the model are the metal shoulder pad and bolter from the original metal add-on bits, along with a current Deathwatch backpack. On this and the other models in the squad, I've attempted to very subtly shade the shoulder with a touch of blur, and the arm with a touch of brown. You probably didn't notice that on any of these models before I mentioned it, but you have now. So job done, I guess.
Here's another one of the models that started blurry. This model was originally going to be a Crimson Fist, and actually had the Fist icon attached to his gut-plate, but I decided that his armour was a little too feral looking for a Fist, and pried it off, replacing it with a Flesh Tearer icon. The chest and legs both come from the old Khorne Berserker kit and the head comes from the metal Deathwatch parts from the mid-noughties.
I somehow lost the original right arm, and the pad was to be a metal Fists one, so I simply used both parts from the modern kits. All the parts fit in well enough with one another, so it works for me. I also hazard-striped the cable since painting it metallic or dark grey would have been too boring, and dark red is already the weapon colour.
Rear view isn't especially exciting. Aren't you glad I took this photo?
The chainsword arm is just standard 3rd ed parts while the shoulder pad is taken (I think!) from the Marine Command Squad sprue. It's a good example of the way that GW's plastic technology has moved forward in the past decade, moving from smooth sides here to the sculpted script in the current ones.
Last of all, we have this dude with a heavy bolter. Once again, the weapon is a reflection of the original rules and available models of the day - both arms, the weapon and the backpack are metal while the megs and torso are plastic. Yep, he's from the days of plastic-metal hybrid kits! The shouty head is the metal one from the old Deathwatch sprue of the day, and obviously the Deathwatch shoulder pad again comes from that conversion set. I think I actually had to use clippers to cut the original right ahoulder pad off so I could mount that Deathwatch pad onto it. Fun!
Despite being such pain in the arse to assemble (I had to do that as part of the recent work, as he'd almost completely fallen apart over the years), he's come together quite nicely. Even if his weapon isn't a blinged-out combi-weapon of the modern type.
The shoulder pad had a feline head icon from Shapeways added to it. I do like the effect of sculpted detail of this type on my marine models. Steel Panthers sound ok for a Chapter name? Good. Done. And now that I see this pic, I notice that I forgot to paint a name onto his scroll. I'll have to bring him back inside and sort that out. Tomorrow. I think I also missed the lights on his backpack as well. And huh. Look at that. Red cable. Ah well.
Finally, the reverse shot. I'm out of interesting things to say about this model. So let's just admire the work that his powered armour needs to to to carry all that crap around!
While the squad might not be table-legal for the current edition of 40k, I'm still quite satisfied to have taken another group of marines out of that old case and actually finished them off. With only a single marine to sort out to make them legal, I'll hopefully be able to work around Painting Decembuary to get one done by the end of January. Any more will have to wait until a bunch of other stuff is completed and out of the way, I'm afraid!

And now my final four Ork boyz – from the initial wave, anyway. The first of these is made mostly with fantasy parts armed with Slugga and Choppa. One metal boy with Big Shoota from before plastics were on offer – which is why I converted my others from the plastic boyz.
The other two are a pair of Rokkit Launcher boyz that are also kitbashed from plastic Ork parts with “rokkits” made from some Ork epic parts from the bits box. Their rokkit backpacks were made from greenstuff with some more plastic parts for the spare rokkits. The “rokkit arms” were initially made from fantasy spear arms.
While this is the last of the boyz from the first wave. We still need the two Nobz, the Warboss and a whole pile of grots/gretchin to properly complete the first wave – so still at least three posts (and a bunch more figures) to come…

These Plaguebearer models were released as part of the initial “proper” waves of Nurgle models back in 1991, alongside the seminal Warhammer rulebook – Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned. If you’re at all interested in the background and artwork that got us to where we are today in terms of Chaos and how it fits in with Warhammer Fantasy, Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000, I strongly suggest getting hold of both Slaves to Darkness and The Lost and the Damned. Obviously the books are hard to get hold of – especially on eBay, but they’re worth it. I believe that Forge World is reprinting them for some special events this year, and of course, with this being the internet, .pdf files of them exist. Though of course, I’m sure that if you picked up a copy in this manner, you’d be careful to ensure that you already owned them in book form first.
Anyway, these five are all I have of the initial release. There are 11 sculpts, counting variations and not counting the “Combat Card” Plaguebearer that was never officially released. I’d love to pick up the others, but with Oldhammer being the cool, trendy-retro thing that it’s become, it has gotten much harder to pick up older models in the last few years. I always especially wanted Woundlicker, Snotsprayer and Wormrot, so we’ll see if I manage to get hold of them one day…
Many aspects of Nurgle that remain to this day can be seen on these figures, from the Nurglings capering around their bigger cousins’ legs to the overall appearance. The “joy” that followers of Nurgle hold so strongly is evident in several of their faces, though the dour expressions that have come to typify Plaguebearers specifically can be seen on Vomitrot, who just looks like a miserable bastard.
Of course, the faces of these old Plaguebearers have a striking similarity to those of the Orcs (and Orks) of the day, in that they’re very clearly Kev Adams sculpts, and he seems to have simply given them pretty standard Kev Adams Ork faces and maws, albeit with a cyclopean eye, mono-horn and a more human-ish nose. The similarity also extends across to the work he did for Heartbreaker on a good amount of WarZone’s range, including the Necromutants that will also be (re)drafted into one of my 8th edition 40k forces. Poxwalkers, perhaps?
These figures will be paired with other Plaguebearers from later range refreshes and have a lot of potential use across a number of games. In 40k they fit into the Nurgle Daemons or more general Daemonic army, they’re used as troops in the Death Guard Legion force, they can be used in Age of Sigmar and even in Kings of War in an Abyssal force. And those are just the obvious used for wargames…

Those old plague bearer sculpts look cool, when I first saw them I though "they have a similar pose in some of them to the orcs in the Hero Quest board game" which makes sense given it was similar time, and reading your post highlighted just that

Tons of stuff, James. Just finding time to post it here is the hard part. I was spending hours each week here checking other people's threads, then posting updates of my own here afterwards. I've got a lot less "free" time now because I'm spending a lot of time sorting things out for my Dad, so Dakka posts were a thing that had to give. I'm still updating the Wordpress more frequently, and will try to get stuff here when I can.
3rd Wave Warhammer Plaguebearer of Nurgle 2001, Plaguebearer Musician 2007
I’d originally planned to post up a WIP update on my Great Unclean One today, but… it’s not gonna happen. He’s currently outside with the 2-part epoxy I’m using to mount him to his base drying. He’s too heavy to trust superglue, you see. Instead, you get some more of my “warm-up” figures that I started on to get to grips with painting Nurgle Daemons.
This second batch of Plaguebearers are from the third range of the Daemons. The second being an abominably bad range of models sculpted by Aly Morrison and/or Colin Dixon in 1995/96 (the old catalogues are contradictory across their volumes, but at least they credited their sculptors back then). These models were released alongside the Warhammer Armies: Chaos Daemons and Codex: Daemons books, and are a big improvement over the previous range – though I still prefer the originals. The only exception to that is the Musician/Bell Ringer, who was released in 2007 as one of the three command models to go with this range.
What this range of Plaguebearers did well was show the dour and uncomfortable side of Nurgle’s lesser daemons. With many of their limbs either mutating into maggot-tentacles or having them emerge from their bodies, the smiles and grins of Kev Adams’ range were gone, to be replaced by pained and twisted expressions. I didn’t like these models for the longest time, but now they have kinda grown on me.
I honestly don’t even remember when or how I ended up with these. I must have found them in a (Nurgle) box a couple of years ago, then took the first 14 our to paint (these ones, plus the previous post) before they sat in limbo for ages. More recently, I opened up a (Nurgle) box while looking for the Great Unclean One that I’ve been painting for Decembuary and found a bunch more unpainted Plaguebearers from this range and the Dixon/Morrison range. It even turns out that I have all but one of the models in this range, the missing model being #2. Model #1 is not painted in this shown batch.
And so, yes, with the previous, original Plaguebearers painted up combined with the nine here, we have 14 Plaguebearers. Or two groups of 7. No surprises as to how that happened.
After (re?)basing them on 32mm bases, I sprayed all 14 of these Plaguebearers with a light green. At that point, they sat around, unloved for a VERY long time. Recently, (as in a few months ago) I’ve looked up some tutorials and ended up giving them a wash of Athonian Camoshade as per Duncan (and others’) videos. Unfortunately, they were going over white bases, not light green, and it gave these models an affect that I didn’t really like. They then sat for another long time. When I decided to paint the GUO and (hopefully) FW Daemon Prince, I decided to get these guys out again to use them as practice for the big boys. Experiments in varying their tones by using Bugman’s Glow skintone blended into their otherwise-green flesh on body parts like elbows, knees, knuckles and a little on shoulders and elsewhere seemed to work, and things like the purplish worms and tentacles also made their way across to the larger daemons.
Of course, the next time I come to paint some Plaguebearers, I’ll vary the colour somewhat. That is to say I’ll batch paint another 7 or 10 or 14 of them in a new, consistent shade, and when they’re combined and mixed in with these 14, we’ll start to see variation between them within their units. I’m thinking perhaps a batch in light browns, and another in a pale off-white.
Not counting the GUO, I have a little under 30 more metal Plaguebearers left to paint now. Then a pair of original Beasts and then Epidemius to paint to clear out my Nurgle leadpile. I’ve also got the Forge World GUO and a couple of other big boys, plus some Plague Toads and Blight Drones do to in resin. After that I can properly begin to get to grips with the newer plastic releases. I’m not sure how far I’ll get through it all in 2018, but for the time being, I’m keen to smash through a whole lot of Nurgle. Wish me (and my attention span) luck!

I really like the old nurgle daemons, I am not as big a fan of the newer, more comedic sculpts.
I really dig your chosen colour schemes and the choice of the stark bone horns really makes them pop. I like.

Excellent stuff, glad to see you're still going, sad to hear we won't see it here quite so often
Highlights for me are the tiger, the LOTR Uruk Hai and the original Great Unclean One!

That female Dwarf is great! easily my fave from that rather large bunch of awesome! one of the things about your blog I love and hate is because you inject so much eclectic awesomeness that I scroll down and see Flesh Tearers and then get inspired to paint them, and then I see Mentor Legion and I'm wanting to do them too! because you do such cool stuff i'll be eagerly waiting for your dumps on here.

Holy shitballs mate! there's almost too much to comment on! I love the massive testicle worm and the snail, also the bloody mawed squig is up there too! some great skin tones and gore flying around the place as well.

V jealous of your mounted Witch King - I gave up trying to find one in the end and used the Finecast one with the crown and flaming sword.
Also loving the bright-skinned Grots.
And I have to ask - Is that "HOTROD!" hand-painted? If so, a futher for you

Crikey, adore the Roddy Piper tribute. That freehand on the jacket and NWO sporran (possibly the first time that has ever been written?). The LOTR minis are great as well, such depth on the dark colours. More please Az!

Thanks guys!
That particular Witch King model was purchased when it was released ...so I've had it awhile now. Nice to finally have completed it fully!
And yep... the Hot Rod! is freehand. (as are the nWo) logos scattered about a few of them...

That’s one heck of a catch up Azazelx .
So many cool models cranked out with style.
Really loving the models that are less seen/unique, like the snail , wonderful shell and the idol of Mork or is I think Gork? I too really love the little glowing grots, makes it look like they have been working in the reactor core too long.
Glad to see you back.

Wow, speechless! So much stellar work there... the Rogue Idol and, oddly, the tongue-tacles on that huge worm are definitely my favourites. Sadly I've stopped following non-forum blogs due to not finding one definitive, all-encompassing application that can track them all, including those without an RSS feed, with a clear and readable interface on both web and mobile... a huge shame.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, I won't be posting here regularly "full time" again - I just don't have the time to keep up on everyone's P&M blogs here (I don't have the time to fully keep my own Wordpress up to date and up with that whole circle). I'll try to stop in more often though - especially when time at work becomes less intense.

Woot. Good to see you around. Those old Beastmen are simply amazing, as is British Santa with the Gehenna Puker. Understand life getting in the way of living it, but I hope you are able to post more.

Wonderful stuff, too much to comment on individually, but I love the variety of different styles you are applying here. I think it takes real skill to hit so many styles so squarely.
I go through long periods where my Dakka presence is lying fallow, sometimes a year or more, so don't let it get you down or feel you need to apologise. When things align correctly you will find yourself back here if that is what you want. I always enjoy your posts and perspective in any case. Hope things improve for you!

As a Wrestling fan Azazel "You've Still Got It" clap clap, clap clap clap. I do hope that real life gets a little more easy and that you can spend more time here on the forums.
As for your work? All great stuff. I think my favourites are the Uruk Hai Beserkers, you have nailed their skin colour and the war paint and blood looks great. The Chaos scenery piece is nifty as well, the amount of great scenery that GW has produced and then swiftly stopped making is daft.

Yup, the NWO freehand always gets my vote. Have you any bekilted figures to freehand a "reality check" or "I.C.O.N" shirt for?

Hahha. I do have more kilted models, but they're all the old Warzone ones, so no real freehandable surfaces on their torsos from memory, unfortunately. I did a SCSA tribute a few weeks ago, though, and I'm now keeping my eyes open for a model suitable to give a "MOX" jacket to...
