Writing, lecturing, research, education, editing, etc. There are options to work with within academia. For the time being though I am doing most of my work out of sheer interest and sending it to academic journals.

You pick a certain field or time period, and you research it. I spend my time between two periods. Late Roman Republic/Early Empire and British History From the beginning of the Hanoverian dynasty to the end of Victoria's reign. I recently wrote a paper challenging the accepted view of Pompey and his conquest and settlement of the eastern Mediterranean. It did quite well at an academic conference.

College professors normally get paid higher wages than HS or Elementary teachers.
Degrees pay a large part of it. Most professors I've ever known/had spent about 12+ years post-grad and have like or 3 BS's and a PhD (or 2).
HS teachers generally have only a single degree (or at least one that can be applied to teaching).
