Well, this army has been a long time coming. Now that it's finished, i figured you guys might like to take a look at it.
Sometime last year i got it into my head, then, proving its bloodthirsty nature, preparing the army did this to me...
(that photo was taken just now, and it hasnt come out terribly well. it's also healed for the majority of a year, suffice to say, i sliced open my knee pretty much to the bone and had to have bigass stitches in)
anyway, after taking a bunch of time off, i've finally finished the army (for now)
and here are a bunch more pictures
First, the lord

then Da Nightbringa

Warriors

Scarabs

Wraiths

And here is the Monolith (this is obviously the centrepiece of the army, and amongst everything else it has twelve hundred rivets)
Monolith (With Interior Detail)

Tomb Spyders

And Objective-Piggies
And The Display Board

That is just amazing. Honestly this is one of the most original and well executed armies i've seen on here.
My only gripe is the tomb spyders seem rather lacking compared to the rest. Other than them though everything is perfect. Bloody good job.
Quick Edit: Any chance of getting a tutorial for those piggies they are great :3

A - A model with 1200 rivets
B - A modeler who keeps count

Post by: jaggedtoothgrin
thanks all. i'm glad its been so well received. i'm pretty happy with them.
the idea that spawned the army came from the fact that necrons are pretty bollocks at the moment. they've gone from this sleek shiny new army of precisely dispensed mechanical death, to a shambling outdated monstrosity. so this army is a conveyance of that idea. i asked myself "who would make (s)crap necrons?" and the answer was "orks would"
after making my necromunda Ork Goliath gang, i'd come to enjoy making orkish conversions, and so the idea was born.
its also part of my recently instated "Fun At All Costs" tournament philosophy. taking competitive armies makes for competitive gaming, which is often not much fun. taking a crazy army with clockwork pigs tends to lighten the mood somewhat.
as to the piggies (which are quite popular it seems) they're actually the least work of the entire army, they're a slightly modified model of an existing "mechanical pig" model sold by an australian miniature maker named Eureka. so the tutorial would be "buy a bunch of them, trim the keys down, greenstuff over the extra keyhole (the stock model comes with two keys, one on each side) and assemble"
(the scarabs, incase people are wondering come from Malifaux, and are unconverted. the reason they arent the least work in the army, is they are hella fiddly to assemble. the wraiths and spyders are nearly entirely scratchbuilt. and, apart from some of the glowing rods, the monolith is the only model with actual necron parts)

Post by: Clang
Love this lots. My only picky criticism is the tomb spiders which don't seem tomb spidery enough(!) to match their necron function - I'd have expected some sort of mobile automated scarab factory?
23660
Post by: jaggedtoothgrin
the spyders fulfil their necrork function by being large lumbering monsterous creatures with melee attacks.
i never poop out scarabs (despite the joy in saying poop) because it risks wounds and attached scarabs are a massive liability in combat resolution. and the increased repair range rarely comes up, because the only things that can benefit from it are warriors, which are usually pretty near other squads anyway.

I have two big problems with this army that need addressing.
1. You can't spell Nitebringa, you sound like a humie. N-I-T-E spells 'nite'.
2. Da Objective piggies, wozzis? they are too cool to be objective markers, you need to make them a unit of something.

The Tomb Kans are not quite as popular than the rest of the army. however witha tad more extra work they could be really good.
What thet lack are wind up keys of their own, extra big ones with key butterfly handles over half the height of the kan body. One could have a key directly facing backwards, the other two at a side angle. In any case the giant keys would restore much needed awesomeness to this one unit which is lacking it.

This is the best Necron army. Ever. Just amazing work, jagged. I am a huge fan of the retro sci-fi look that you have going here and have tried to bring elements of that to my own mechanical ork army. I dig the clockwork and the execution and dig all the conversions you've done. The kanz were what jumped out at me first - they remind me exactly of old 50's comic robots, complete with the iron-tentacle-style arms. The kanz are easily my favorite thing in the whole army, though I do agree that they would benefit from wind up keys.
Nightbringa is another great conversion and concept. Nicely done all around.

Seriously..iwonder how bad i would have to urt myself to make an army 1/2 this good. As all the posters before me have noted, you kept to your guns and it paid off. Wish I would go against this army in person, win or lose I agree with you it would still be fun.

I love it! The orkz look like lil clockwork golems! I'd say the lord is my favorite, but there is'nt any piece here I wouldn't rate 8 or higher. Do you think you could be persuaded to kustomize some of these for other people? I'd kill to have an army that looks this good. Also, I like the tutorial idea and making an army profile, people need to see this army.

So I am stuck here all medicated up in the hospital....and started counting the rivets on the picture. I was like in the 160 range on 1 side when I realized I may be off ten above..or ten below...then I realized there is no way I can remember with me being all loopy so I quit counting. But lets just say 180-200 x 4 sides, the interior, the gun...I think 1200 could be hit easily. My friends monolith is at my house..I keep telling him my orks are gonna loot it if he doesn't get it within the year. I want to have like 30+ grots carrying it above their heads. it would look like a footed lith!
Still have to admit....pretty cool on the 1 of a kind factor..and pretty high up on the WHY factor! Too cool man. Sorry fer the typos in my last post and this one, I am all loopy.

When did you start planing to do this?
23660
Post by: jaggedtoothgrin
it was about a year and a half ago when the idea first occurred to me, if i recall correctly
hey guys, thank you for all your kind words. I have some old work in progress shots (or rather, mostly they're "post-conversion pre-painting" shots) so i'll whip them up now (and a little bit about how each part was made)
i'm not particularly keen to sell off commissions at the moment (partly cause i dont want to spread the idea around, but mostly because its a lot of work and i have so many other projects on the line already) but i might be convinced if an idea strikes me the right way.
my initial plan was that my scarab swarms would infact be snotlings with little aerials in their heads (remote controlled snotlings!) and that my spyder would be a mekboy type, on a spiderleg contraption, holding a big remote control with a single large dial. unfortunately the snotling models where much too static and so it wasnt gonna work out. i am thinking about getting a few epic fighta-bombas for something at some point. i breifly toyed with the idea of making a whole pile of mini-spyders but they where incredibly fiddly to make, so i ditched that idea.
i still have plans for some immortals, and pariahs, and a few different thoughts on the two different destroyer types, but for now i'm taking a break from the necrorks while i work on other projects. (pariahs where dropped from the lineup because they'll look quite similar to the regular warriors, while the immortals where dropped because they're going to be based on meganobz, which means they'll be hella-expensive)
Spyders

the base for this model is a piece of pvc plumbing pipe. plasticard detailing for the most part. the arms and legs are pieces of that clear plastic tubing you find at hardware stores, two different sizes, with coathanger wire in the middle to hold shape. glad you liked the arms grim, that oldschool robot style was the look i was going for. i carefully posed the feet so they look like they're lurching along. the little red aerials are a nod to a certain Penny Arcade character...
Monolith

Ok, so i carved up the monolith a fair bit, and added the interior details before i finished the assembly. you should he able to see some of the materials used here (and a bunch more interior detail that isnt visible in the painted picture)
Nightbringa

Da Nightbringa's bottom was scratchbuilt from mostly guitar and bass strings. the torso comes from reaper, the head was built from two different ork nob heads.
Wraith
central component here is a christmas bauble. then its mostly just plasticard. the tips of the tentacles are taken from leftover tyranid gaunt weapons.
Warriors

ok, so the warriors start life as black orcs. all the fleshy bits are carved out, and replaced with wire, tubes, and other roboty stuff. added shoulder armour from the ork sprue, additinal plating made from plasticard. weaponry is mostly made from the ork boyz kits
Lord

this one is an actual WIP shot, the greenstuff blobs where placeholders till i got my beads. points if anyone can tell where the bionic eye bit comes from, its from a current GW kit.
[edit] oh, and the injury was inflicted when i was cutting some plasticard pipe to make an outer exhaust for one of the warriors, it was not going as well as it should, and i (really stupidly) put too much pressure on the cut and hit a small bubble within the plastic, so it gave out, and my fist knocked away the boards between myself and the blade. my advice to all aspiring modellers out there. never use knives on a tray upon your knees, if it ever takes more pressure than you thought to cut it, stop, and if possible, buy yourself a proper mechanical pipe-cutter. its a fantastic gadget, and you can get one big enough for most modelling needs that is quite cheap.

Dude! I tip my hat to you, that is an amazingly conceived army, incredibly well done. The hours invested must be high, but the pay off is even great.
Good effort

What did you use for the green rods? Do the necrons have thicker green tubes? or can you get them somewhere?

Truly a work of art. Terrific originality you win 1st prize in my book. Top notch, well done. I'd be super proud of that.

I'm so mad (I don't really mean it, though). About 2 years ago I had a very similar idea, and wrote everything down. I was finally getting in gear to work on it...and now I see it. I see the army concept complete, and it's a beautiful thing. I can now get to work on something different

That is... One of the coolest, most original ideas I've ever seen.
I tip my hat to you, I wish I had the patience and skill to do something like this.

You know, I frankly doubt he has noticed this thread was resurrected...
But in any case, it is probably the best necron army I've seen.

Passed WBB!
In either case, I hope the OP sees this is back and adds more content.

We'll Be Back indeed.
so, i'm playing with these boys at Wintercon. all rather last minute, and its an 1850 tourney. so that meant i had two choices.
i could give my entire army disruption fields (horrendous waste of points) or i could make some more models over the course of three days
so, is anyone surprised that i went with option two?
Automatically Appended Next Post:
in answers to a few of the above questions (no, i hadnt seen these, i guess the subscriptions lapse after a while)
the scarab swarms are from Malifaux, there's no real conversions done to them (aside from a few minor leg-reposings, and the massively fiddly nature of the models that may count as conversion-work all on its own)
the plastic rods come from a company called Plastruct, who do all sorts of plastics, including glowy rods of many colours and sizes. so i got green ones the size of the orky guns
at the moment i am unsure what will happen with the new codex. Matt Ward does not inspire me to confidence, although i'm sure the codex will be balls-out crazy powerful, thats not what i look for in an army. the rumours i've heard don't look good for the most part. so we'll see. I have 25k worth of tyranids that havent come out of the box since the latest codex. it'd be a pity for these guys to go the same way, but i am working on some other projects as we speak (there is a new army with orky stylings that i intend to bring out at the end of october, and another or two in the works)
and i have 12 objective markers because:
a) i had twelve piggies, so figured i might as well paint them all at once
b) i loves the little piggies. i loves them good.
c) who knows, maybe i'll need 12 objectives in some crazy-ass scenario one day
d) all of the above
as to the fluff behind the army, here is my (nicely overwrought) army handout piece
There is a legend, amongst the wilds of the Ghoul Stars that tells of the lost Waaagh of mad mek Grimcog. They say that Grimcog was always considered mad, even by the standards of mekboyz, who are known for their instability at the best of times. Obsessed with bionik enhancement, he would scavenge any tech he could lay his grubby paws upon, incorporating them into his designs with brilliant ingenuity. As his bursts of mad creativity increased, he began to experiment upon himself, replacing with bionic contraptions any flesh lost to injury. They say that the real trouble started around the time he pillaged the Heretic Forges of Sycorax, a cursed place locked away for a millenia by ancient priests. They say he found the beginnings of his infernal machine within its catacombs and that breaking through the imperial quarantine he carried it with him upon his growing Waaagh. Where before his creative madness overtook him at intervals, they became the norm. Working for weeks at a time without pause, his army pillaged and raided seemingly at random, looting technology according to some schematic within his fevered visions. When the day came to unleash his greatest creation, it is said that all that remained of the flesh of Grimcog was his black heart and his mad brain. What the machine was supposed to do, noone knows for sure. Some say it was a weapon of unimaginable destructive potential, others, some form of force field technology that would render his army indestructible. Perhaps it was both, for when it was activated, the skies bristled with lightning and multicoloured arcs of strange energies, and at the height of its power, with a massed battle-cry upon its lips, Waaagh Grimcog simply vanished.
For thousands of years, the tale of Grimcog and his lost Waaagh languished in obscurity, a name whispered amongst tech heretics and historians, but recently the rumours have surfaced once more. Tales of a horde of mechanical warriors who strike with little warning and with no apparent pattern. Whose weapons cause their targets to vanish, leaving only the faint screams of the departed echoing around the warriors. Who cannot truly be killed, and when struck down seem to reform from the scattered gears and cables. Once again the name Grimcog is spoken with awe and fear, they say his Waaagh has returned, cursed (or perhaps to the orky thinking, blessed) with an existence of perpetual violence, searching the galaxy for something, stealing away men and xenos alike for their twisted experiments. A tale for housewives to frighten wicked little children. "Be careful," they say, "for one night as you lay in bed you may hear the relentless clicking of gears as they come for you, Grimcog and the Iron Orks."

That was a surprisingly successful thread necro .
Anyway; amazing, amazing work. Wraiths feel a bit bland compared to other conversions (and not like CC monsters) but this is a minor niggle that only stands out 'cos everything else is soooo awe-inspiring
