You ever feel like you were at a used car lot, when you visit your local hobby center???
I did just the other day.
I stopped in to replace some worn out old clippers... thats all i needed, clippers. The two main employees down there, know me and know my history, so they do not really bug me unless i ask.
I used to manage the local games store, and I've sold GW products to all sorts of people, i know how the speel works.....
but i guess this was a special day at the GW store, the district manager was in.....
He was so over bearing, and so into giving me the pressure to spend more money than I could afford, and I told THREE times, I just needed the clippers, i seriously just wanted to leave.
I am totally going to call the GW customer service, cuz that was lame, the guy was not nice, he was over bearing, he didn't listen to me, tried to get me to spend almost 80 bucks when I ONLY could spend the 15 for the clippers.
who else has had a lame GW experience?? how would YOU rate your overall experience with GW??

Since the manager was replaced (well, he did resign first), my local has been a second rate model shop combined with a dodgy car-yard.

There are a couple of staffers who know me and don't push the hard sell. There is one guy who doesn't learn though. I go in, and he's immediately on the "buy this!" spiel.

I will walk the extra two blocks to get to my actual proper hobby/model store rather than walk into the GW.

The only staffer at my GW store doesn't push purchases too hard, so no, i don't have that much trouble.

It's all about the vibe you give out - I give out a 'feth. off.' vibe everywhere I go. I pretty much get left to go about my business. I appreciate that it won't work for everyone, but it certainly does for me!

I've never gotten the infamous GW sales push. I've had people suggest bigger purchases a couple of times, but they back off pretty quickly when I tell them I'm not interested in spending more money.

It might be because I'm older or more certain* in my response, maybe the stores here are better, or maybe I've just been lucky so far.

*That could be read as 'less polite'...

I'd say it's actually pretty bad business to hassle people when they walk in the store.

If there's something new they want you to see, that's okay with me. But constant pressure to buy stuff that you don't want is asinine.

At least you have a hobby store within biking/walking distance. I need to drive 2 hours to the nearest one. Really inconvenient if I need something right now at this moment in time.

They don't work on commission. At least here in SoCal they don't. They start at $10 an hour but most guys I know make $14-15, and that is all the financial compensation they get.

socially challenged is having a floppy fish handshake. I have no problems discussing the newest products, or old ones, or new rules, or whatever with the employees. But when i feel like the guy i am talking too could sell an icebox to a guy at the south poll.... then theres a problem.

I get pushed all the time. I'm not sure if it's because I don't look like a gamer, or if it's simply a result of their boldness.

And if you were to go on quoting that same person, you'd also recall that part of it was the fact that there were people hooting and hollering that redshirts should be yelled at for just approaching someone they'd never met before in their time working at that store with the GW approved standard spiel.

But I guess it's more fun to claim that if you can't withstand a little minute spiel you should be allowed to yell at some poor schmuck working a minimum wage job, rather than just saying "I know what I'm here for, but I'll make sure to ask if I need anything. Thanks."

Like i said , i believe you when you say the sales person that you bumped into are tolerable , im not doubting you.

Thus , stop doubting me ( us ) when we are telling you the ones we have around here are BAD.

I drop by my GW about once a month, usually for an event or something. I think they realize that between my collection of old school stuff and my penchant for converting things to avoid spending $$$, the usual sales pitch is a waste of energy. They keep asking me if I "need any other hobby supplies" like glue, etc. when I'm checking out, and sometimes that gets annoying, but on occasion it has jogged my memory about paints, so I put up with it.

I definitely don't get hit with suggestions of buying the latest Regiment box/Apocalypse plastic kit/etc. as soon as I set foot in the door.

The event in question... was NOT the standard GW spiel, this was an overly AGGRESSIVE sales PUSH not pitch but push. I have given the standard GW sales pitch many many times, I used to manege a local game store where half our business was GW, trust me when I say that it wasn't a pitch.

Have you ever been in ANY form of retail chain when there's a district manager in?

Normal business practices go out the window to show off for the big boss.

But yeah, hey use your example of a FLGS which was NOT an official GW store answering to a higher power other than just the guy who owns the shop.

Why did you come on whining about a topic that comes up every other week?

And frankly, I'm "being a jerk" because of the fact that someone has to play devil's advocate here. Too many posters come on whining about their experiences with GW staff--and then fail to mention that they were in part responsible.

And man, I wish I worked for GW. Lurking forums and getting paid? That'd be a blast!

TBH , it matters not how often the topic comes up . It only matters that he wishes to express his thoughts , why does it matter that others have also expressed it prior to his post?

Weaksauce. Take it back to 4chan.

Quite simply:
9/10 times--this is something that you should have talked over with the staff member in person, rather than post about it on a forum.

Do you even know what devil's advocate means?

And if we lock threads about games being previously mentioned, movie trailers, etc--crap like this should be locked too.

There is NOTHING new posted.
There is NOTHING ever added to the conversations.

It's the same people, over and over and over crying about how a Redshirt violated their personal space/harassed them at the till/asked if they could help them.

well heres, the deal, I have NEVER had anything bad to say about GW, staff, quality of mini's, customer service, nothing... well except maybe their prices.... but I have never had an experience like that, i have never met a good sales person that didn't know when to tone it down a little, I was a little shocked, and my wife was down right uncomfortable. I honestly did nothing but go into the store to buy a pair of clippers and that apparently wasn't good enough for this DM, who felt like he had to turn the heat up on me. I made this post to see if I was the only one that's had this experience or if its a relatively common thing.

Fair enough, I can see if the guy was that bad.

But if that's the case, look him straight in the eyes and say the following:

I should post a thread in OT about how my waiter violated my personal space by standing 2 feet away and asking me what I wanted to order, standing in my personal space while writing the order down and then taking the menu away from me since I had ordered.

I have seen/heard of floating managers for GW operations before. It depends on the density of stores in the area you mentioned.

And I would have to say he's the GM, the usual manager I've known in my gaming circles for years, he hurt himself, and they had the new hobby manager in, and this guy, and the usual red shirt (that knows me) so.... if there was a new hobby manager it would make sence to have a DM there to help.

Read it and comprehend maybe?

Working in a situation like a GW store, having a district/regional manager present changes the work atmosphere.

It's notorious at Best Buy, at least in NC. It goes from a joking, friendly atmosphere(with no managers present)--to the most uptight and stuffy working environment that people call in sick if it's a scheduled visit.

I guess the hilarity of it is that the Op feels that it's only GW that does this. At any retailer, restaurant, place of business there is always a more "professional" and uptight atmosphere.

I know when I walk into Best Buy when the DM is there as the staff seem a lot more serious and everywhere you walk you get someone in a blue shirt asking you if you need help, if you do don't hesitate to ask. It's common courtesy and you are supposed to offer assistance but you can just feel the tension in the air. Same goes for wait staff. I know their mannerisms so well I can tell whenever one of the big shots is present. The air changes.

He might have seemed pushy but if he's feeling under pressure he might not have known how it was making you feel. Complaining to the manager would have resulted in more than walking away and than posting about it on the web.

Doing that just makes you look like a 12yo crying for attention.

I never been to an official one, just stores that sell GW products. The nearest "official" one is like 6 hours away or so.

just so EVERYONE is clear, I am not crying about my ONE bad trip to a GW store. This was my FIRST run in with a GW guy like this, it was a little un-nerving. I am NOT trying to Insult, whine, or complain. I started the poll/thread to see if my experience was unique or not. Also this guy WAS NOT a red shirt, he TOLD ME he was the DISTRICT MANAGER. I have had NO problems with a red shirt.

As it stands, I DID write a letter to GW Customer Service, since this guy was the District Manager, and that's where to go from there. I am not just "blasting GW" on the internet because I got my feelings hurt, this was the other day, i've had to THINK about my expirience, and decided to do a quick poll to see if my experience was a singularity or the norm.

I understood what he was saying. It's not always easy to accurately describe events that depend on experience within a context in sarcastic or semi inflammatory fashion while having that context simultaneously be well understood or accepted. The sentiment hinged on the understanding it attempted to convey having been understood previous to the statement being stated for it's content to be understood.

Its meant to say that some people only see /believes in incidents only themselves have experienced
while completely shut out / deny what others tell they have experienced.

Well if they give one person multiple chances they have to give others. I know fateweavers been banned, I'm pretty sure gwar has, and I think GBF has been banned even more times than myself (possibly). The only one I can remember off the top of my head that got a permaban was stelek, though I'm sure there have been others. Either way, try to shy away from outright insults or dirty language, that'll get you picked up by the modpolice faster than virtually anything else. Being banned is reserved for the real trolls, just not the posters with short tempers .

I've never had a problem in a GW Store. Ever. They show me the new stuff, and I've either decided I'm getting it, or decided I'm not getting it long before I entered the store. Say the same to them, and communicate like a human being.

Sadly, DM in question sounds like he might have been demonstrating something to the other staff (one hopes it was the wrong way to do things) and you just happened to land in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You've pretty much set the atmosphere of the thread right there.

Underhanded? I dont think so. If i quoted your name right away , that would have sparked a war again.
If i left the name out which i did , it atleast gave you a chance to think " hmm maybe i was wrong to have said that to her "

And you know something? Here is something "real"
this thread isnt about you or me. Its about OP . And you attacked OP early since PAGE 1
All i did was stand up for him , knowing perfectly well that you'll ignore your actions on hcordes while going right back on me.

Its funny , because a bunch of us had a convo in PM when this was going on.
And i went ahead and redirected the fight you 2 had towards myself , because the last thing i want is for you to successfully get some
innocent new member banned while you get away with it.

So , if i get banned for this , so be it . Atleast it wont be him. And there is no way you can walk clean out of this one either.

There will be justice.

Oh and here is another quote of you , that you seem to have zero feelings or 2nd thoughts about.

And since this is all about you:

But hey. Might as well end the thread on a high note.
