I wanted a couple Ork Killa Kans squads to fill out my army. I've seen them used to good effect in the past and they'd go well with a armor heavy army list. I didn't want to buy them at $25 each, nor wait for the new plastic kits in March, so I'm giving it a go. I was also inspired by a Dakka thread here that I can't find right now with crabby legged kans. I like that look much better than the GW's very static looking legs.

Well, here's my progress so far. Lots of detail work left to do!

Making six at once is a heck of a lot easier than building six individually. I think the quality also goes up as you have a change to refine your techniques as you go.

Side view so you can see the three legged look that I'm going for.

I like this robot-looking one.

This guy has some personality too. Like a knight.

Here's a pic of the top hatch that I've done for them all:

I need s few more details for the fronts of some of the more plain looking ones. I also have more top detail work. And of course the arms and powerpacks on the back. The powerpacks will be a bit challenging. Still not sure what to use.

For the arms, I'm just going to be installing magnets for now. I'll work on the arms when I'm done with all the bodies. Prolly be finished with the bodies next week sometime.

Any feedback or ideas are welcome! I'd like to paint them up similarly, and need ideas for the paint schemes as well, though that's a ways off. Oh, and the maybe bodies are made of PVC, anyone have tips for painting that? It's lightly sanded, but that's it. Not sure if I'm gonna have problems with it.

Great work!

I was the one that had the crabby leg kans. I must say yours look way better then mine. I have got to seriously break down and by some of the small plasticard tubes.

I like the way they all have their own look. After seeing yours mine kinda look dull and like they came off an assembly line.

You are making me want to redo mine. Curse you and your out doing me.

Yeah, Stump! I went looking in the gallery for your pics and your thread and came up empty. Your stuff is awesome.

I now have a huge collection of the styrene tubing. It's real cheap, maybe $0.40/tube and goes a long way. I pick up ~$5 every time I hit up my FLHS, and now have maybe too much. They also have styrene I beams and C beams and L brackets and stuff. Great when you're bodging stuff together.

ha HA! We challenge each other and make awesome stuff. AND don't have to pay the GW tax just to play. We win!

Last time I played, a 35pt Kan insta-killed my 140pt mega armor warboss. I was not pleased. The I2, S10 DCC weap is awesome. In CC, I'd bet they'd chew through terminators pretty easily. Esp considering their cost. They can run during shoot. And the Kustom Mega Blasta, while a bit spendy, is an awesome add-on, esp considering it's Grots driving the thing so it's BS3. That's as good as it gets for orks!

Dashofpepper, The main body is 0.75" PVC pipe, sanded lightly and cut into lengths. Those are standard 40mm terminator bases there. I'll take so pix so you can see scale tonight. The rest is just styrene tubes/rods and plasticard. The 'face mask' section is .4mm (i think) styrene sheeting, and the thicker is 1mm. The 1mm doesn't really bend, so you can't get it to stick to the arc of the PVC. But the 0.4mm works fine, if you pre-bend it a bit.

Yea, my stuff got moved to another forum. It is in the blogs now.

Here is the WIP on the kans and the 2 dreads I am working on.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/273250.page

Maybe the dreads can challenge you to out do me too.
Although I hope not I do not want to redo the dreads too.

Again I will say those kans are looking good.

Can you give me the site you use to buy the tubing and I-beams and such. Also the sizes you used.

Size is one of the main reasons I have not ordered anything like that. I am not sure of sizes to get.

I am about to try my hand at some looted vehicles and I would love to have some of that stuff before I get started.

They look great so far, BP! I dig the tripod crab-leg look, definitely looks more ambulatory than the stock GW model.

Looking forward to see how you handle DCCW and gun mounts. Keep us posted!

Haha, awesome! I love the walker legs. Looks like an overdone AT-ST or Ed-209. Great look!

I got a boxed GW Deff Dread for xmas, and built him recently. I didn't customize the body much, but I did built two DCC weaps and two KMBs for it:

Counter-rotating grinder.

Massive drill.

This one was a modified KMB from the Lootas/Burnas set.

This one started out as some Tau weap, and quickly went south from there.

Well, I get my from a local hobby shop, so I can test fit pieces before I buy. The problem is there's an outer diameter for the tubes, which is generally labeled and standardized. But the inner diameter is not as obvious, and not often labeled.

At my local shop, they have a display of Plastruct stuff. It's loose pieces at <$0.50 each. That's generally my best bet cause I can ensure that one rod will fit in another tube. I know you can order directly from them, and their catalog is great. But you need to order a lot for them to ship to you. You're better off looking for a local dealer in their stuff. Here's their website: http://www.plastruct.com/ And here's their dealer page: http://www.plastruct.com/Pages/USDealers.html

The Styrene sheeting that my shop has is from another company, that I don't remember off the top of my head. I'll post this afternoon with that info. They also sell bags of tubes in labeled sizes. So, like I bought a bag of about 8 1mm styrene rods that I used for the this sections of the hydrolics and rivets. That pack was about $3 or so.

Those weapons look awesome on the dread.

I have not gotten around to trying my hand at altering the weapons too much.

As for the tubing. I can not find anyone locally that sells the stuff.
It would be way better to be able to get my hands on the stuff and fiddle with it to check sizes.
I guess I am gonna have to just buy some different sizes and hope the sizes work out.

The other company is Evergreen Scale Models. Here: http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/

The have a package of rod and tubes that has a couple misc sizes, that mostly fit within one another. A quick google comes up with a bunch on online retails. In fact, here it is: http://www.mainlinehobby.com/google.shtml?popwin.shtml?P*c0269_231.jpg?269~231-fr~EVERGREEN%20SCALE%20MODELS~2.99~2.99~ALL~269-231%2011/32%27%27%20STYRENE%20TUBE%203%20PIECES%2014%27%27%20LONG,%20EVERGREEN%20SCALE%20MODELS

Here's an update on my progress. I'm just about done with them now. Since last posting, I've:
  • Detailed the fronts of all of them, giving them some personality and uniqueness.
Finished detailing the tops of them all.
Build the power/smokestack assemblies for the rears of them all.
Installed the magnet and housing for the arms on them all.

  • Group shot.

You can see the top detail better here:

And here you can see the rear:

So, what remains is further detail on the rears, and that about it for the body section at least. Next big step, arms.

Last night's CCW took me a bit longer than the others. I went for a lot of detail. And, if anything, I did too much and too neatly. I built the head of the hammer first, and it's very neat and clean. It could almost me an SM hammer or something. The 'technology' around the weapon is pretty orky, though. A rocket powered hammer. Rocket on the far end, shooting the opposite direction. So, it would speed that thing up and smash it into the enemy.

Yes, I think about these things too much...

This one took me more like 2 hours. I need to speed these builds up...

After I took these pics, I went back and grabbed a ball bearing that I lewted from work, and installed it in the arm joint, so the assembly will spin more freely. It's actually kind cool.

NEVER! Banish those thoughts, brother. Your builds are great, and your details are what make them really stand out! In a world with way too many sub-par ork "conversions", we need more people that think about what they are building, functionality of the weapons, and overall aesthetic.

Orks are crude, but they're not simple. They're effective. Brutally effective. Their gear does not have to look as it if was cobbled together by mentally challenged chimpanzees, though tons of people still cling to that very school of thought. Your average, run-of-the-mill ork focuses on not much more than squeezing a trigger and swinging a choppa, but there are meks building teleporters, motorcycles, trucks and wagons of all sizes, stompas, protective force fields, even weapons that send living creatures through the warp itself to emerge inside the target! My army is my own personal crusade against the image of orks as imbeciles, and you're doing a fantastic job going against that grain as well.

Don't let anybody tell you your work is "too clean", as a paint job can always add some edge to the final appearance. If all else fails, you can go back when the job is done and add some battle damage, or paint the hammer to look like a recently looted bit of thunderhammer/power weapon.

    Keep doing what you do!

    I agree with Teek.

Great looking stuff. I love the look you are getting for these kans.

I dont feel like they are too clean at all. I have already said this once but your kans are inspiring me to redo mine.

I wonder...if I just made 6 more and kept the 6 I have, is 12 Kans too much.

Keep up the great work. I can not wait to see these fellas all painted up.

    Post by: BloaterPaste

Thanks for the encouragement! You're totally right about the detail. I never thought to intentionally craft SM or other types of weaps, just to show them lewted on an ork model, but that's a great thought. Opens up all kinds of avenues for creativity. I always like the thought of Chaos lewting SM and then having that lewted by orks. I'm gonna do up a tank like that some day, but for now I can leverage that same kind concept as I complete my kans.

And I also agree with the Teek regarding the detail. Meks are the /artistes/ of the orks. Mega geeks, who love nothing more than complexity. So, more detail could never be bad. =)

Stump, I'm planning on a "Tin Tide" deployment option, fielding Mek, Thrakka, 9 Meganobz, 9 Kans, trukk, deff dread and a small boyz mob. That can all be fit in 1500 pts, and would be one hell of a surprise for anyone expecting to be fighting a green tide, and one hell of a tough Ork army. So, no, 12 is not too many. You need to have choices of the prettiest model to bring. You know you have your favorites... =)

Last night's build was a giant, ornate can opener. Idea behind it is that the rear portion pumps up and down rapidly, causing the who mechanism to pivot on the attachment point. Making it crank up and down in a vaguely can-opener-style action.

Lol, dunno if that would actually work, but it's powered by the WAAGHH, right? =)

I got quite a bit done over the weekend. Finished the last two Dread CCWs, and built two KMB/Burnas. The CCWs are very successful. I'm not so sure about the guns. Building guns is new to me so I don't really know what the important bits are that make it look like an excellent gun... I'll figure it out.

This one was based off of a mining drill bit. I'm real happy with how accurate the bit portion came out. It was a real fiddly assembly, and

Next is the saw arm. At first I was just going to do a lawnmower blade type thing. But I went in more of an angle grinder/rotary saw direction and am happy with it. This one has a /great/ profile.

So, that does it for the Dread CCWs. I've built six, for my six kans. Now on the the KMBs.

Here's the first one. The mounting mechanism is a little long, and the gun itself is a little large for the scale of the kans, so I'll have to make later ones a bit smaller. But it turned out ok. Not great. Just ok.

    Here's #2. I don't love it. But it'll do the job:

These are spectacular. GW could learn a lesson from you when they update their Kan design.

Fantastic work! A nid skull or trophy of some sort on his base and he's ready to go! I'm really loving these so far.

    Group shot?

Well, GW released their Kans Squad today, and while they're cool and all, I still like mine better.

They're new ones have a very 'video game' quality to them. They don't look like they're sculpted by a guy, modeling. They have a kinda perfect, clinical feel that I'm guessing is cause they're all CAD now. And some bits of the Deff Dread are straight copy/paste. I mean, look at the KMB on the 3rd Dread sprue. It's straight out of the lootas/burnas kit.

At first blush, I loved the models, but on reflection, I like them significantly less. They're an improvement over the old kits, but not what I'd hope to see from GW.

That being said, I'm happy to see their use of ball joints at the joining points. Making the model poses much more flexible. Less gap filling needed.

I like yours better too , they have the essence of silliness of Grot creativity. ( like those old martian look )

The new GW ones are a big improvement over what they used to offer.

    BUT, yours are way better.

The new dread is kinda cool too. Something about it doesnt sit well with me though.

It's been a bit since I've updated, so I have two sets of pics today. Firstly, here's my workspace after I finished all that building. It was a mess! so many bits of plasticard, styrene tubing, etc.

More importantly, I've finished painting the main bodies. I'd put it off for a couple weeks cause it was intimidating, and hey, Bioshock 2 had just come out. =) Anyway, here are the finished bodies. I'll be painting the DCCs and guns next, they should go fast.

    Yellow Squad:
    #1

    #2

    #3

    Red Squad:
#1 (This was my first one, and it shows... =( )

    #2

    #3

    What do you think?

I really like the weathering on the faceplate on Yellow #1. The glyph on Yellow #3 is odd, what is it?

The paint jobs are overall decent, but there are a few places where you let the wash pool that don't look quite right to me. I understand it might be the look you're going for, but to my eye rather than looking like "grease spot" it looks like "pooled wash."

The glyph in Y3 is Blitz. Just elongated to fit the space. Also, it's a bomb going off. =)

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'll go back through and do a bit of cleanup. Most of the parts that look messy, look just fine irl. But the camera really highlights the details, and makes some things that might be overlooked at 1:1 size look bad.

Yeah, that happens quite a bit, that things that look *great* on the table don't hold up quite as well in photography.

I love your cans, and I agree with them being much more original and cooler than GW's. I would love to see the flyswatter one have a squished 'nid on the base, it would be amazingly funny.

Thanks! I don't have many 'nid bitz. And arm or two maybe. Maybe I can swing by my local GW and they'll hook me up with a body or something.

Yeah, just checked. Just a couple of stabby arms. I think I'd need at least a head.

    I love the idea though.

Love your Kans they have inspired me to make my own. I think I've found away to make the body's a sphere which I think will be pretty cool. Gonna steal your leg designs on a few of them (I would steal the bug swatter but its such a cool design I can't do that to you) My only question is how does the size of yours compare to the new GW designs
