Platinum Devil 2010 (the 1st ever UK Dakka meet up!) in Canterbury, Kent, April 10 and 11. @ 2010/01/25 16:53:57

Post by: Ketara

For those of you who haven't kept on eye on the Dakka 2010 thread, I've been arranging a Dakka tournament down here in the merry olde province of Kent. At the University of Kent in Canterbury to be precise. I can now give a date for this event: the 10th and 11th of April.

The event will be technically free of charge, as we're not paying anything for the room or the like, however, I would like to ask for a nominal donation of £6 or so from all attendees via paypal before the event? Why? So that we can get some terrain on the tables! Simply put, we'll be starting out from scratch here, so a token donation of that kind will allow me to outfit our gaming tables with some cheap, but workable terrain. Not only that, it'll allow us to get some prizes for the winners. So if you'd like to attend, please send your £6 to my paypal account (Necrofood@hotmail.com). When you do so, please attach a note with your DakkaDakka username, and real life name. I'll then note you down and reserve your place.

The tournament has a points limit of 1000. There are only 24 places available.

I will be in need of two painting judges, so if you would like to appraise your fellow Dakkaites efforts , send me a PM!

I must set an age restriction here of 18 I'm afraid. Otherwise we'll quite possibly run into all sorts of problems with legal responsibility for minors, and that'll just complicate things terribly for me.

I will not demand everyone sends in their army list, after all, this is a friendly meet up for Dakkaites more than actual tournament. However, I do require that everyone have a legible typed army list to show to their opponent. If you suspect an opponent of going over a 100 points, call the judge(me) to sort it out.

As things stand, here is the intended schedule for the days.

Saturday

10:15-doors open/registration
10:30-1st game-Annihilation, Pitched Battle
12:00-15 min break
12:15-Game 2:-Beacon drop, Table Halves

6 Beacons are placed on the tables by the judges before the game begins. To win the game, you must have more beacons in your possession than your opponent when the game ends. If you have the same number, the game is a draw.

Any non-vehicle troops, Fast Attack, or Elites choice may claim a beacon by moving into base contact with it. They are then regarded as having 'picked up' the beacon. A unit may move and take a beacon with them. Units with a beacon may not embark on vehicles. If a unit carrying a beacon is eliminated, or fails a leadership test and breaks, the beacon is left where they were previously standing, and is no longer claimed by that unit. If a unit with a beacon is defeated in combat and is either wiped out or flees, the beacon passes into the possession of the unit that defeated them if the unit is eligible. If not, the beacon is left unclaimed as above. Carrying a beacon does not affect a unit's movement. A unit may carry a maximum of 1 beacon for every 5 models in the unit(If the total number of models in the unit is less than 5, it may still carry 1. Once a beacon is picked up, the carrying unit is unable to leave the board in any way(so a Lictor would not be able to pick one up, and then go back into reserve, for example).

13:45-45 min lunch break
14:30-Game 3:- Capture and Control, Table Quarters
16:00-15 min break
16:15-4th game-Portal, Table Halves

There are 4 beacons placed on the table by the judges(one in each quarter). Each counts as a holdable objective, and to win a player must control more beacons than his opponent(if they hold the same number, the game is a draw). As a holdable objective, a beacon is contested if there is an enemy unit within 3” of it. Only Troops options may claim objectives. Each beacon has the number 2,3,4, or 5 on the underside. If a model from a non-vehicle unit(except for walkers) moves into base contact with a Beacon, they may choose to activate it. Roll a D6 and apply the following effect:

1:-The unit is lost in the warp and removed from the game
2-5:-Place the unit in base contact with the beacon of the correct corresponding number. If you roll the number of the beacon you just activated, you may choose which beacon to emerge from.
6:-Deep strike the unit to anywhere on the table.

A unit may assault the turn it exits a portal, providing there is a target within range, but does not receive any assault bonuses (so no +1 attack, Furious charge is negated, etc). If a Portal is completely surrounded by models, so that there is no space for a newly teleported unit to be placed, then the surrounding squad must be moved the minimum necessary amount to accommodate the newly teleported squad having a minimum of 1 model placed in base contact with the portal, with the rest of the squad maintaining squad coherency.

17:45-All games end

Sunday

10:15-5th game-Seize Ground, Pitched Battle
11:45-15 min break
12:00-6th game-Assassination, Table Quarters

Counts as a standard Annihilation mission, except that HQ choices are worth 3 Kill points, and Elites and Heavy Support Choices 2 Kill Points

13:30-Hour lunch break
14:30-Casual Gaming
5:30-Awards

The Casual gaming slot is there for you to find any random gamer and have a fun time!

Points

A win will net you three points, a draw two points, and a loss one point. Should a tie have been achieved points wise by the end, then the players will be expected to have a grudge match in the casual gaming period! The grudge match will be a mission decided by the judge.

Remember, this is a casual gaming event primarily, as opposed to a high pressured actual tournament environment. We'll go for drinks afterwards, and generally just have a fun time. As such, if you have an old army list you'd like to dig out, such as the Lost and Damned, Kroot, Space Wolves 13th Company, or even a last edition Chaos codex army legion, PM that you want to play that list to me. I will then go through it, come up with some rules alterations to make it playable in 6th, and then PM those new alterations back to you. (must be done two weeks prior to tournament)

I will be the judge on the floor in this event, and not actually playing myself. I know my way around the rules quite well(being a gamer of seven years), but if I make a ruling in game you disagree with, I'm afraid you're going to have to grin and bear it. As I said before, this is a primarily fun event as opposed to an actual GW tournament (hence the possible inclusion of older unusual army lists), but if anyone starts causing havoc, I will present them with the Stelek Award of TFG and eject them.

Platinum Devil Painting Contest

You can enter your models at any point on the second day up until 4:30. The categories are as follows:-

-Single Small Miniature
-Single Large Miniature/Tank/Monster
-Unit/Squad

Final details

Directions

The event is being held at the University of Kent. An interactive campus map can be found here:-

http://www.kent.ac.uk/maps/canterbury/02maps.pdf

Th building where the event is located can be seen in the bottom right of the section marked 'E' on the map. If you look at where the marking 'E5' is, you'll note a slightly smaller unmarked building to the right of it. This is known as the Darwin Missing Link building, and is where we shall be playing. There is parking nearby to those of you who are driving, so there should be no issue there.

If you want my mobile number as an emergency contact, feel free to PM me, and I'll send it to you.

There is a cafe/bar in the large building next to us, so food can be bought at the time. There is also no problem with the consumption of food or drink whilst playing, however I would request that everyone is tidy(as I have to leave the room in the state I found it), and that any large scale consumption of alcohol is saved until after we've finished playing.

There isn't really anything in the way of prize support this weekend. I've actually sunk about fifty quid of my own above what I've received in donations to ensure that there would be sufficent terrain for this weekend, so whilst I'll drop one or two things of my own that I have lying around NiB for the winner, there really won't be any major prizes.

There's still a few spaces left, so if you have a friend who decides to come last minute, I don't have any objections to them dropping the £6 on the door.

Finally, I'd just like to say that I'm pretty much largely running/organising this on my own, so I apologise if things get a bit hectic at first, and would appreciate a small amount of understanding.

See you all there!

~Ketara/Ben~

I'm very interested, and would like to come, but i'm at the warhamer doubles tournament the weekend after. I doubt i can explain to the girlfriend that she'll be missing me for 2 weekends on the trot of glorious geekdom.

Then again, it does sound fun. Maybe if i distract her with new shoes....

Reaver, If you're not intending on coming, I'd appreciate it if you left the thread clear for those who are.

Thank you. =)

Seeing as the double tournament sold out in about half an hour, and i've not been able to get hold of my mate (who was in charge of tickets) i'd like to be upgraded to a maybe. as such, here are my questionaire answers

1. 2 days. Might as well make a weekend of it.
2. 1500
3. Definately have time for casual gaming, or for those who think 5 games of so a weekend is enough to have a beer and socialise. It gives time to wander round and look at other armies too.
4. As long as there's categories for "Best attempt at a 5 year olds painting style" and "Most rushed attempt at a unit" then i should be in for some prizes

1. Totally 2 days
2. Varied points I think. Escalation?
3. Defo time for casual games, as I'm likely to get knocked out early
4. Single mini (small), single mini (large), squad, vehicle?

How's that. I'm up for this. As long as I can a) park and b) sleep somewhere I'm sorted.

No worries there, Canterbury is a tourist town, hence there's plenty of hotels/B & B's.

I am coming.

I would prefer a relaxed two days to a rushed one day.

I would prefer 1,000 point games because I need to paint a new army for it and I don't imagine I can get 1,500 done by mid-April.

I would rather play casual games because my army is going to be for fun only.

If you expect about 20 people to attend there is no point making too many categories for painting because you will end up with only one entry in each. I suggest (1) Squad/Unit, (2) Vehicle, (3) Large mini/special character.

I'm in - sign me up!

I might also be able to bring a table's worth of terrain with me...we'll see!

1. Would you prefer the event to run for one or two days? If you picked one, which one?(out of the 10th and 11th of April)

- I'd prefer one day, but two would be fine

2. Would you prefer a 1000 point set of games, a 1500 point set of games, or a varied points limit set of games?

- If it's one day, then 1000 seems the only option. Otherwise we'll only get a couple of games. If it's two days, I'm good with either.

3. Would you like to ditch some tournament time in favour of time for a casual game?

- Rather than split the two, why don't we just have a fun, unrushed tournament with plenty of time to complete the games?

4. How many, and which categories would you like for the painting competition?

- I'm not going to be winning anything here, so I'm easy....

So far I'm leaning towards a two day tournament of 1000 points with a day and a half of relaxed tournament gaming with a a third of the second day set aside for people to game whoever they like.

Leggy, I'm going to leave it for dakkaites only for a week or so. If we don't make up the twenty or so by then, I'll open it for people to bring their mates along and whatnot.

As to rules on non-games models, this is technically a GW based event, but if it's recognisable for what it's meant to be representing, and the majority of your army is represented by GW stuff, I don't see any problem with it. For example, if you wanted to use an Avatars of War Dark Elf sorceress for a Dark Eldar dracon, that would be fine, but if you bring a Warmachine army to 'counts as', that would be pushing it. If you want to propose something specifically here, forward me a PM, and I'll take a look see (and probably say yes until it's ridiculous).

It was my friend who had the non-GW models. Might not have to worry about him. The counts-as are a pair of knight paladins i built from the Defiler kit, and use as Leman Russ battletanks.

This isn't an official GW event. I would let any non-GW models or conversions be used as long as the model is recognisable for what it represents.

For example, Pig Iron infantry can represent IG but not Nids.

@Ph34r - One assumes it is a play on Golden Demon?

I would like to attend, but need to check my [her!] diary to see if I am on baby sitting duties first!

Ketara please pencil me in.

1] - 2 days
2] - 1000/1500 whatever suits the format you come up with
3] - I like the sound of an un-rushed tournament; having a laugh being the ultimate goal but it doesn't seem right having a get together and not having an inaugural "champion" to buy the beers!
4] - I'll leave painting categories to the organisers, they could potentially have a busy day without having to judge too many models as well!

As it is a Dakka event it is fair that members should get first bite at the cherry.

I suggest you fix the date and format, set up a PayPal account and make an announcement.

In my experience of running exhibitions, the majority of visitors decide fairly late if they will go, however, most people won't make any decision until there is a concrete proposal.

Once people have paid their fee, they are more likely to turn up.

I'll be fixing the date solidly tomorrow, I just left it subject to one final change in case I'd picked a bank holiday or something and hadn't realised. I made a provisional bookings on the rooms, so no-one can try and book them in the meantime. I'm just basically giving all you guys a heads up before it goes concrete, and hearing what people want to do points wise and so on.

Notprop is right, the title is a play on Golden Demon, and I thought it sounded better than Silver Troll.

So roughly tomorrow evening, I'll edit the first post with the concrete details. But the more of you that chip in now, gives me more data to work with when setting everything in the ol' concrete!

Ah. The Golden Demon spoof to my says "painting competition" rather than "tournament/meetup", which is why I was wondering about the choice.

I intend to be taking Dakka only names and registration until next Friday, at which point I will open it up for people to procure places for their friends and whatnot. I'm basically giving my fellow Dakkaites the first lick of the lolly, as it were. There is no cutoff date other than when I run out of places basically. Due to the nature of my job (i work in marine survey and can get called away very last minute for offshore work) I cant confirm definant attendance, however if i am free (and its ok with the organiser) i'd like to come along for casual gaming, are unpainted armies ok for that? (again very busy) and if i were to make an appearange i'd be willing to bring my realm of board and some scenery for pickup games (hoping for around 1500 pts), would that be ok?

Do we have any idea yeat exactly what the format of the competition will be? I'm presuming it will some kind of league? What scenarios will we be playing, or is this not sorted yet?

The format is undecided as yet. A month prior to the event, I'll make an update to the first post regarding directions on how to get there, scenarios, etc.

Whilst we might only have six confirmed members right now, I have about another 6 tentatives who I'll remind closer to the date. I'll also post up a guest list of who's coming.

Discussion on scenarios is ongoing here:- http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/280737.page

Cool. One of the things I found useful about the last tournament I went to was that the judge required people to email in their lists a week or so before the event.

This way each one could be checked before the event, so as to minimise mistakes and not waste time. You can also then put up a little list of who's coming, and who's playing what army on the front of this thread, like in the Notingham thread.

If you're looking at 8-10 people actually attending, and you want more, you could always pop down to the local GWs veteran nights? Canterbury, Maidstone, maybe Bluewater? Give people an email address, and the autoreply could be the link to this thread. Maybe we'd get some new Dakka members...?

We're hoping a couple of friends of ours who don't post here will be coming. One of them has a van, so we can fill it full of scenery... I have enough hills for a couple of tables at least...

Oh, and I'm treating this tourney as a challenge to get 1000pts of my Penal Legion Guard painted up, so that's my army. If I don't make it, I'll bring Daemons....

Also, shouldn't this be stickied in "Schedule a game"?

Would come but I live in Suffolk now.

Out of interest which college is the room in?

I used to use a room in Keynes for Sunday gaming in 2007.

Tried the Assaination scenario last night, it worked well. You've got a good mix of scenarios to try and design an army list for. Should be interesting.

Paid and ready.

Also, I will be driving Saturday morning from South London, if anybody needs a lift.

And, I'll likely bring my entire army and some terrain. (All fully painted up!) So if anybody fancies a 2000 pointer on day two, give me a shout.

Finally, what hotels are people staying at? Any recommendations? (Edit; Doh! Just seen Kilkrazy's at the Falstaff. Everyone else?)

Sunniest day of the year thus far.

Really good fun so far, we've all played 4 good games against very chilled and pleasant opponents.

2 games and some general wackiness to follow tomorrow.

For the record now I'll state I was robbed on that last turn, bah.. what can you do when you last troop holding the objective is killed by the twin exploding Killa kans that were contesting it.

Great day. I am on my way home now, as I was only there for today, not tomorrow as well. I'll try and post a few photos later. The other fellas are all out for a meal in Canterbury!

I had four great battles. A win, two draws and a defeat, but all four games were equally fun, and I di dnot hear a harsh word said by anyone all day, so it seems like everyone had a great time.

The standard of armies on display was fantastic. All a LOT better than mine!

I admit it was a very funny/weird end to a game! and to be fair those KillaKans had teleported around the table three times to get there!

some photos from today...

And I'm off to the pub for a pint with the dakkites!

I agree with the above - all in all a very good weekends gaming!

Also, great sportsmanship throughout too.

It always both amazes and humbles me when so many people put in so much effort with their armies. There was some really great stuff on the table tops.

I'll post up some pics a bit later from all of my many draws!

Just to add my thanks to Ketara for organising and Reds8n for helping him out.

All my games were fun. It was great to see so many themed armies and conversions including

Praetorian Steampunk
Penal Legion
Ad Mech IG walker tanks
Grot Orks
Space Marines

Everything painted to at least good tabletop standard and some of them were much better!

Why is the average UK gamer about 250 pounds lighter than the average US gamer?

Going on that wide, and representative sample, of gaming manhood above, and the pics we get of US gaming conventions.

We are fatter, and shorter than people from the US.

Our gamers range from concentration camp thin to wider than they are tall, and the average is well above 'average'.
