Hey everyone!

It's been a while since I posted any of my work to Dakka, I hope this new project makes up for it...

Since my Fremen, I've been floating from army to army trying to find a fit. I did the vampire themed army, but it really couldn't hold my attention.

Eventually I went with Iron Hands and it's been great. For such a cool, convertible army there seem to be very very few actual armies out there.

Well here's my first squad, Q+ C Welcome!

Via the electronic god known as ebay. They had these sales on watch bits so I jumped on it. I'm probably going to need to restock as I plan on doing 10 more marines, 10 stern guard, 3 dreads, 6 drop pods, a land speeder, a MOTF and a Vulkan Stand in

Thanks! I really want there to be a cool Iron Hands army out there on the internet. It took me weeks to find a completed iron hands army, but it was just some of the GW bits on black marines.

They really deserve the full treatment- hopefully I can provide it.

Wonderful conversion work! I've been wanting do this sort of treatment to my Iron Hands for a long time, probably just one 10 man squad to play as LotD, give them a real veteran feel. Great use of gears and bits, keep it going!

Thanks! I try to get a bit done every night, if possible, though school and work demand most of my time. I just ordered 30 .030" diameter styrene rods (to make better rivets) and $60 bucks worth of more watch bits- over 6 times the original amount. Hopefully I'll have enough to finish the army!

Aaah, Klausmaster. Seeing how much I enjoyed your Fremen army, I will be watching this with intent.

Great work so far; do you have any ideas for them in game terms, or purely aesthestic?

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Awesome, I'm glad you like it. This army plays as a Salamanders Drop Pod Marine Force. Instead of Vulkan, I'll be creating a clan leader who's mostly cybernetic (possibly just a brain in a case).

Limbo wrote:Loving it! Can't wait to see some paint on this! Curious about how you'll make the Iron Fathers

Ya me too (on both counts). I'm thinking the 'Iron Fathers' (master of the forge and vulkan) will be build on terminator legs to give them some additional stature and will have many many many bionics implants. I also plan on doing more 'loin' bits from guitar wire and tubing. I want both to have expansive servo harnesses, but we'll see.

Miss Dee wrote:do you have a way/ photos of how to do bionics? As Im doing IH just waiting on orders to arrive.

photos, not so much. I can tell you how I do it though.

Well there are a couple types of bionics. Full hydraulics, piping and guitar wire.

Pretty much I just cut the thigh segment out between the hips and the knee pad. Then I drill out a couple wholes on either side (matching number). Cut a couple lengths of guitar wire (E string) and rubber coated electrical wire. Glue them into the opposing segments and you're good. Hydraulics are made from pieces of aluminum tubing, the smallest I could find) and follow the same process as above. To get the hydraulic effect, put the smaller pipe into the larger so that they dock.

Other bionics, like facial ones, are a little more creative. IG binoculars are great for eye pieces, and adding bits in general looks good. Take a look at the models for some details.

Oh I think they will. Part of the thing about the vampires were that they were so tactically weak... (no offense grey knight players). Also, they kept freaking breaking.

My army actually doesn't sport any chaplains, yet. My 1850 list doesn't really fit them as I'm deep striking and not rolling up in land raiders. However, there will be some awesome TH/SS termies, no doubt.

I'm planning on giving my MOTF a thunder hammer in addition to his servo harness, so he'll have 4 S8 attacks with no saves (ouchies). Not to mention the TH is master crafted when Vulkan's in the army. I considered the conversion beamer, but I really don't think it's all that great to be honest.

The Vulkan Stand in should be pretty awesome. He's going to have, for starters, a massive glaive (gear shaped, of course) as well as a billion +1 implants. I haven't figured out how I want to do his heavy flamer yet (mounting it on a servo harness is so boring) but I'm considering giving him multiple wire appendages in addition to his normal 4. I really want people to crap their pants when they see him, so he's got to be utterly terrifying... any suggestions?

Also, I'm in dire need of bits. Any donations of metal junk or spare marine bits of ANY kind are more than welcome and will certainly find some home in the conversion mill. PM me if you have anything lying around (bits, wire, tubing, styrene, mechanical gizmos, etc) and would like to aid my conversion efforts.

As a side note, I started working on my 1st dread. Too bad I need to convert a multimelta....

Hm, I hadn't thought of it that way. Usually there's an iron cross with a skull there- I shaved off the skull and added a gear in it's place. Maybe you'll feel differently once it's painted? I dunno.

How about mounting the flamer on the glaive? Think it was the emperors honor guard who had glaives like that (there's a really good picture of it here on dakka, but I can't find it at the moment), only with bolters instead of flamers. Also, it'll give you a good reason to give vulkan loots of tubes running all over him ;P

Truth! I also like the inside of the dread claw- very gribbly grindy.

Are you planning on converting your drop pod to accommodate the size of the dreadnought?

Empchild wrote:dude that stuff is looking even more pimping. Are you doing this for a specific tourney or just to have a cool army? Also any plans on an iron father down the road?

Well my list is 1850 (standard for most tournies) but I hadn't planned on any one tournament specifically. I would love to use my Fremen for tournies (they are absolutely brutal) but as they are heavily converted I'm certain many many issues would arise.

For those who don't know: (per Lexicanum)

The Iron Hands also eschew the traditional office of Chaplain in favor of their Iron Fathers, specially trained Techmarines who serve to protect the faith of their brethren; some outsiders view this as well as the Iron Hands' ties to the Adeptus Mechanicus as an unhealthy relationship.

I'm planning on having my MOTF and Vulkan essentially be Iron Fathers, as the label is sort of an umbrella term. I could claim the army has twin linked and master crafted weapons because the Vulkan stand in personally contructed and upkept them all himself, insuring their value on the battlefield.

Sure! I can't spare any of the brass GW ones (I only have a few left and need to spread em out over the 3 dreads, 20 marines, 10 sternguard, 5 terminators, 6 drop pods, land speeder... etc).

If you want a couple of the watch cogs I can definitely spare some.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I Needed a way for my stern guard to really stand out. Since every other marine in my army is super cybernetic and converted already, it would be a challenge to differentiate the poor bastards. I figure that if every stern guard has a sight on their bolter, an expanded ammo clip, additional ammo for special ammo, a different color helmet and a shoulder pad sporting Medusa's face (there homeworld is Medusa, after all) then I should be good.

Miss Dee wrote:He was going to be a DA dred from fallen angles, and I saw a friends IH and I went and took off the DA stuff.

Very cool- I thought about doing the Fallen once, but then I decided to do my IG instead. I also can't wait to get some paint on these guys, but as I have some chains coming in the mail it might need to wait a little longer.

He's so badass he doesn't need another weapon. Actually it's going to be a multimelta arm, but since multimeltas don't come in the normal box set, I had to order some multimelta sponsons to convert with.

Miss Dee wrote:Hammers and claws in the post

Awesome! PM me your address and I'll send some cogs your way.

As a side note, what do you all think would be cooler- lava bases or wasteland? Medusa is described as a wasteland with constant tectonic shifts, forcing the inhabitants to dwell in mobile convoys. Does that sounds more like a volcanic hot spot or dead wasteland to you? Likewise, they say that there are areas where ruins and ancient structures lay on the ground.

If you're in the mood for volcanic bases, there's always Kaarashi, the volcano where Ferrus landed, so it wouldn't be that strange if the Iron Hands had some sort of fortress there, think i recall something out of the Horus Heresy series where they describe a fortress with a huge smithy and boiling lava, no sure thought.

But I think a wasteland base would fit the most

Damn Klaus. I just checked your fremen army. Ive read the book and i love that and and your army.

Anyways keep it up. For the stern vets: im thinking you should: Replace their limbs with multiple ones?
An Iron Hand resembling those of their pirmach that they use for making weapons and armor with?
Maybe they use their own custom bolters and armor they smithed for themselves?
And a Cog on the helmets instead of the laurels?
Make the melee weapon for the dreadnought have and triangular point at the end to make it look more deadly and to make it look like a building tool?
I'd like the idea for the lava/wasteland look for the bases, personally id go for a dark, hot like the inside for a volcano/smithy/armory etc.

These are just suggestions. Ive only been into hobby for a few months.

Good luck.

So I realized, as I took inventory of my bits last night, that I am out of the proper pieces to finish my squads.

For example, I have 15 backs packs and 16 sets of legs whereas I require 20 of each to finish.

No worries though- I devised a plan to 'make it work' using lots and lots of prosthetics and whatnot. Last night I finished my first prototype, a marine whose lower half (groin too) had been amputated. I'll post some pics later, if possible.

Also, my medusa shoulder pads sadly do not replicate well via green stuff mold. Instead I think I might go nubby pre heresy pads and improvised plasticard ones.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update.

So I did some work on the dread since my multimeltas came in today. Notice how nicely they fit when trimmed a little.

I also made 16 more iron hands shoulder pads- that kind of sucked.

Lastly, I made two stern guard. As you might recall, I was shocked to discover that somehow I had a dearth of marine legs (5 to be exact).

So, using the mounts for CSM havoc launchers, I fashioned myself two sets of legs. I plan on making two more of this type since that would be enough to replace 4 missing legs and a terminator set of legs will make the sergeant (replacing the 5th). I kind of wish I has enough havoc launcher bases to make a full squad of these guys- maybe I'll get some more donations!

Also, the combimeltas are constructed from half the nozzle of a multimelta, some card and a bolter.

Enjoy!

small update:

did some work on my MOTF and finished another stern guard. I also added some bits to the other two, just so they fit the army a little more.

the MOTF is all scratch built.

The legs aren't done yet, they are just the plain termi legs. The torso also will have a crap load more done to it. the head is done, and the plasma cutter is done.

Also, I'm not sure how I'm going to do my commander's head... this guy is so cool looking (IMO)

Vitruvian XVII wrote:Absolutely awesome. How do you do rivets, btw??

Thanks! I do rivets 1 of 2 ways. The first is by cutting a .030" diameter rod into very small pieces with an exacto. These are then glued on with rubber cement (or super glue if on metal) using the end of moist exacto the place it (the water creates hydrogen bonds between the rivet and the knife blade, holding it there).

The second way is the same as the first method, only I punch out a rivet from plasticard using a 1/16" diameter punch. This is then place first, with the smaller rivet glued on top.

I also love the MOTF. Of course now that I've stared at him for hours while working (and have suffered several small injuries at his expense) he's far less cool looking to me. The cogs are really awesome- earlier in the thread I think I posted a link to where I got them.

The etched brass cogs were donations from the freebootaz over at the 40k Radio forums. Originally they came with the GW basing kits.

Sorry for the delay, everyone!

Like I mentioned before, my hands needed a little break as they had suffered some minor infections at the hands of my exacto blade.

On the plus side, I discovered I no longer need a pin vise to drill plastic, just my hands and a drill bit (Iron Hands, after all!)

I received a ton of donations Thursday, so many thanks to Veez from the 40k Radio Forums and our own Miss Dee.

I also got my magnifying headset (I work on a small scale, if you hadn't noticed) as well as three links of jewelry chain (I love this crap).

I ordered myself an airbrush (I think I mentioned that already) so I can't wait to get that sucker and start spraying...

Note: Jewelry chain is not the easiest stuff to use. I recommend making your initial connecting point with gel super glue, then attaching one end of your chain (without trimming it from the main length). Once that sets, figure out your next connecting point, and gel glue that done once you have trimmed the chain. After both points have set, you can manipulate the chain hanging between the two points as you like. Then give it a generous helping of LIQUID super glue and it will harden/affix to whatever surface lies below. Works like a charm.

Ok, some updates. I added chain to the dread and stern guard, but they aren't worth photographing at the moment.

After many debates with myself, I have figured out how the clan leader, Varkull (Vulkan He'Stan) will look. Here's my WIP.

He still needs a lot of work (head, greaves, backpack, shoulders especially) but you get the general idea. He's going to have a doc oc/ fabius bile styled backpack with pincer claws (4) that reach around him. I'm also considering some servo skulls, but we'll see (maybe I'll combine the two).

Kudos to anyone who can name all the bits!

It might be a very long time before that happens... well except for dreads and drop pods.

My Fremen army relies on landraiders so badly that I kind wanted to keep away from that play style, instead trying an entirely drop pod in force.

Very kick hynie work so far. Its relly getting me reved up to work on my on projects. I do have on small concern though, the spear/flamer on your Vulcan stand in, looks to long/un-weildy to me. I think his is because you have given him a sheild on his other arm, negating the ability to use a two handed weapon. I did have a thought(did I spell that right? I have been drinking tonight) on how to fix this, What if his arm split into two at the elbow then his grip on the spear would be pretty stable. Ohh and since you are not planning on using tanks for this force, I would love to see what you could do with a couple of speeders. I have a pic of a landspeeder with a hard wired gun se4rvitor in my gallery, take a peek if you want. Just my two cents... 8)

Lol you should have seen the relic blade before... It used to be gigantic.

I don't think I'll be altering its general shape (it's metal reinforced now) but I think I see what you're saying.

There will be at least 2 speeders in this force, both melta/heavy flamer (twin linked sucker!).

We'll see how they come out when they time comes...

Post by: Nicorex

I was thinking along the lines of, if his arm was sticking straight out from his shoulder, it would split at the elbow joint making a Y shape, with the ends of the Y being 2 hands. Well you could always have one of his servo arms holding it too.. I know all about over the top custom jobs, I have made a few WACKY builds in my time, just wish I had pics of them from back in the day.

Looks pretty Kick Hynnie to me.Great weathering effect. I have just one observation though(now this just may be from the washout on the pics), this mini seems very dark to me and it looks like a lot of detail is lost due to that darkness. I would suggest mabye doing a few of the bionics in brass, not an overwhelming amount, but like one of the arm rods and one of the leg rods or the cog wheels. just to add a little pop.

I don't collect space marines, but i am sorely tempted by these models... you don't realise how agonising this is!
It's a real pleasure seeing your work - thank you for sharing it with us!

Thanks! I too was never interested in space marines. It was only after getting my hands on the new codex and reading all the fluff that my imagination went wild. Originally, I was going to start a space wolves army. Then, I realized that I can just use my Fremen for them (as I really don't want to have two cc space marine armies). Next, I was going to go with Ultramarines. Their timelessness and enormous tradition was super appealing to me, especially since I have a degree in Classics and they are entirely Roman inspired. However, I knew they wouldn't sate that special longing I possess for converting. Something told me I would get bored very quickly with the 'nilla marines, so I decided to explore my options. Much like the Fremen, there were few to none shining examples of Iron Hands armies out there, so why not me?

Also, a little fan art I did in honor of my new army.

That arts one of the best pieces of 40k inspired art I've seen that includes a lot of the GW stuff. The brightness of the lights and the contrasts with the plates just simply look awesome. My jaws dropped when I saw the Vulkan although I preferred the original looking over the shield with the weapon behind him striding forward thing. These are looking exceptionally brilliant and I can't wait to see more

Cool thanks. I haven't glued the arms or head in yet, so don't worry- the pose isn't permanent yet.

Glad to hear it! I used to do sketches and scan them in, now I do everything with my stylus digitally.

Amazing....
Where on earth are you getting the cork-y stuff for the bases?

Klaus's Iron Hands @ 2010/02/25 22:49:25

Post by: Vlad-X7

You can get cork sheet from modelling stores - i have some from Javis who make it by the roll (36"x24") or you can get it from local DIY shop as cork tiles (varying sizes and thicknesses)

or if you want to make rocks a bit more randomly use corks from wine bottles - break them up with a knife into random shapes.

You can get a huge amount pretty cheaply.

Hope that helps

Klaus: O_O..... Now thats how you make AND paint iron hands The only thing i don't like about your Chapter master is the head: you would think he has completly replaced his head and skull (not including his brain) with machinery. Besides that i think its brilliant.

Yup- I bought mine in sheets from craft stores. Another source, which I recently discovered, is from my local dollar store- they have the crappiest 'bulletin' boards there made of the stuff for just a buck.

I was considering that very seriously- I haven't quite finished converting him, so we'll see where it goes.

Additional:

I also considered making a librarian whose head was just a brain in a case- but I'm not sure on how effective a librarian would actually be with this list (the MOTF is sort of integral, and so is Varkuul)

Klaus, this army is just awesome. The detail crammed into every miniature is overwhelming! They certainly have the appearance of direct translations from art to miniature, which is something that is very very difficult to do, but I think you done so masterfully. That techmarine is my absolute favorite unit you have, and handedly beats any other one I've seen. I'm sure you've made the Machine God proud with such an awesome army, and I'm really looking forward to what you have in store!

some sick conversions...
especially vulkan (although i hate the idea of having a vulkan stand-in leaving this army, its a very dope model...)

the painting is very good as well, but i think it could use a little more contrast...
but over all, really awesome stuff here

Wow. Very John Blanche-esque, except with better conversions.

What a way to make Space Marines very unique. Great blog so far. Looking forward to seeing more.

Ha no worries- I made it through the previous comment and got it well enough

I need to fix my lighting setup- it keeps washing out my details and adding a really strong yellow glow (which doesn't help either).

Klaus, you are an inspiration to newer painters and modelers. I hope i can attain a 5th of your level at it. Just amazing man, Great work and keep it up. On a side note, Have you ever competed for a Golden Daemon award yet? If not you should that is just too good not to.

So I just finished three more iron hands. It's pretty late, though, so I'll post the pics tomorrow.

As an aside, would you guys rather see more stuff converted or painted? I always figured converted made more sense (I could at least play the army) but as I still need a metric ton of drops pods, speeders, termies and the like, it might be a while...

If people want more conversions, I'll finish painting this squad and start assembling the second. If not, I'll probably go on to paint the dread, MOTF and Varkuul.

Any thoughts?

I gt the smallest set first but it proved to be not enough to finish my army. Also, there are a lot of 'fly wheels' in there which I haven't really found a use for as of yet.
