Post by: General Mayhem

Hi, I notice that several Dakka members have given themselves animated avatars and wondered how I might make one myself. I have various programs for graphics manipulation and can make animated giffs, etc but cannot find any info about what is the best format to use. If this is already covered somewhere else can someone point me to it? Thanks

Bah, I was hoping this was a thread to complain about the animated Avatars. Most of them have annoyed me enough that I've started Adblocking the ones I dislike, which is more than half that I've seen I believe. I find them too distracting in most cases.

Complain away, the internet is a big place and no doubt lots of people will agree with you. I am just interested in extending my pc skills and adding a bit of originality to my dakka "face". Even some of the non animated avatars are annoying.

Awwww Aduro you haven't blocked mine have you D: . I've gotten so many compliments on the incredibly disturbing clown-thingy that is my avatar .

But I didn't make my avatar, I found it on the web. If you want to find an animated avatar, just google animated avatars or .gif avatars and something should come up.

If you can make animated GIFs, make one. I'm not aware of any other format for animated pictures.

Also, your damn stupid clown-thing was probably only the second dakka avatar I've ever adblocked. Jolly annoying!

Yours and the "Boom Headshot" one were the first two I blocked. I think I've only actually blocked like four, since few people really have them. I've also blocked the various Adoptables people had in their sigs.

I rather like mine, made in Adobe ImageReady. It's pretty easy in there, you can add or remove as many frames as you like, control rate of cycle on each frame, etc.

To be fair, I've had it forever... I think I'll make a new one some time.

In general, the ones I don't mind are the ones that pretty much just move in place, but remain the same colors. It's the ones that flash screens and change that I find to be too distracting. Mean Green Stompa's is probably right on the edge, but I think his is the first animated one I remember, and for some reason doesn't bother me.

Hmm. Never really thought that my avatar might be annoying to anyone. Hope that's not the case.

I make my own animated avatars and emorkticons and such. Use Photoshop to make the individual frames, then convert it into a gif movie in ImageReady where I can control the frame times.

I just saved this recent one as a gif and made sure it was a small enough file size and it worked a charm.

Anywho...

Opinions will vary!

At least it gives me a...presence on the forums . If the modquisition really wants me to change it I will...though I am a big fan of this avatar...so my question to you is was that a demand (of your modly powers) or a request?

Alright...still...let me ask everyone now. Is my avatar that much of a distraction? Would the community like me to change it? I understand it's...scary...but I've used it for a while and really wanted something unique, althought I suppose I could change it if you want.

If you have Chrome, you can do ctrl+shift+K and then a little thing pops up. You can then click on whatever you want to block. (For instance, Gwar's weird furry avatar)

Then you click "block it" on the little pop up and it's gone!

in honour of this thread I got an avatar which moves.

Also thanks to GWAR mentioning gimp I figured out how to resize it so it would move..

Does no one use Opera? Adblock built in, can download lists for it, can rightclick a page and click "block content" then select exactly what you want dead. Has an IRC and email client built in and has a whole lot of other nice features. Oh, and it's rather lightweight.

Animated personal avatars @ 2010/02/13 23:20:09

Post by: Gwar!

Firefox has that too, except you don't have to have the IRC Client if you don't want it and can add so much more.

Personally I enjoy Gwar!'s little humping fox-thing. There's a bit of cognitive dissonance between that image and a lot of his posts, which really entertains me.

Since my original question has now been quite simply answered (use an animated gif!) the much more interesting question of who has the best, most annoying avatar etc prompts me to think: How about a poll or competition? Categories could include best homemade, best themed, most silly, most memorable, most missed etc. What do you think?

Prizes could be an "award" to put in your sig?

Well, malfred's old manpurse avatar is clearly most missed.

But I didn't make my avatar, I found it on the web. If you want to find an animated avatar, just google animated avatars or .gif avatars and something should come up.

Yours and the "Boom Headshot" one were the first two I blocked. I think I've only actually blocked like four, since few people really have them. I've also blocked the various Adoptables people had in their sigs.

OK how about this for a challenge. Animate one (or more) of your minis to reflect your current online "rank".
Any takers?

I sadly do not own any WHFB models, otherwise I would animate the Ye OldeTrolle Kinge :(

Speaking of ye Olde Trolle, I preferred your "Gwar aged 9" avatar, even if it wasn't animated. Anyway, I'm off to give it a go.

OK so it took me all day, and the demo charge is a bit meh, but it's here! Demo charging drop trooper takes out deamon prince (and himself at the same time).

Watching the deamon prince "doing a twirl" gives me an idea. For P&M blogs, show off threads etc do an animated gif to show a 360 view of your model(s). No sneaking off to do it now (it is valentines after all) but I have an idea this could really add something extra without too much bother. Oh well, next time..

I had a few problems to start with. I found that checking pixel size was important (120 x 120 pixels max)
I am now trying to do bigger animated gifs of models.
Not sure it will work but here goes,,

ok so thata not moving.. back to the editing suite? or is it a limit of the dakka site (it didn't move in my gallery but it was uploaded as an animation)

First: Stormtroopers are always acceptable animation material.

Second: Ultra mortalitas wins the thread.

Third: Someone edit me this to less than 120px, and we'll talk.

I really want to get hold of the GIF with the Finnish disco dancing couple - Ake Blomqvist

A friend of mine had a GIF of it as his sig - was riotously funny.

I'm sticking with non moving for now, but I will be changing back to a tau with the obamicon color scheme once I hit 2000 posts (and hopefully, a new title, which means the sig has to change too.)

Got a reply re: animated gifs in personal galleries:

Looks like the limit is 120 pixels max. Still an interesting challenge to do something creative within that (admittedly tiny) frame.

I hope this works OK (first time article, bit of a leaning curve for me too!)

It works if you click on it. It loads into a browser page. Dakka has restrictions on displaying animations in posts in case someone slips in a naughty, as clarified by lgoburner, above.
Not sure how Gwar and Dreadnote posted their animations.

I kind of miss Darth Bob's avatar. Glad I saved it at the time... now to set it as my wife's screen saver and hide her I/O bits!

Amusingly, I always scroll to the right at work so avatars don't show, so they never really bother me. Sigs, on the other hand, got blocked as soon as that functionality was available.
