OP you failed to mention DH or SoB...

You also failed to include daemons... in a game of random dice, nothing I love more than a random army... who will show first, when will the rest show, all deepstriking.

I'd put Inquisition for a blanket term for Witch Hunters and Deamonhunters. Firstly because they're about to be a conjoined codex. Secondly cause they work in very similiar ways, arguable though I'd say so.

Also, SoB isn't an army. Yes, you can field a Witch Hunters army with no SoB. GASP I KNOW!

Nids. The only army not in it for power, per se'. They're just trying to survive and grow.

Nids are trying to grow and spread death, not survive. If they wanted to SURVIVE, they could eat themselves and simply stay on one planet.

Imperial Guard all the way. Mass Infantry, crap load of tanks and ruthless commanders leading it all. Also guardsmen are real heroes, takes guts to do what they do with know enhanced armor like the space marines.

How can you not include orks in the poll?! They are definitely the coolest army.

Guard of course. They are the embodiment of humanity struggaling to survive. They are not the bravest or strongest, yet they are us! How can you like anyone else when the Guard are the only 'pure' humans with no augmentation and aren't tring to destroy everything we know and love.

But all in all, I still will have a special place in my heart (and wallet) for Tau.

Actually, not so much. That wasn't a true invasion. A true invasion they'd be harvesting the area and such. In that, they simply wanted the Orb back. We both know how well that went for the Word Bearers.

They still harvested many of the guardsmen and what not. Though Burias had the best line in the whole book.

Even though i actually play Eldar and have a small amount of DA, i kinda reckon Chaos is the coolest anyway. They're huge, angry and spiky, making them awesome.

Because of the Nordic mythos, and because Space Wolves are not so much influenced by the Space Marine codes they tentatively get my vote. Trouble is they are still Space Marines, who are the jocks of the 40K high school

well orks are fairly good in the game if you have enough boyz

Freaking this. I only started playing comparatively recently (lol 5E necrons) but I first saw Necrons when someone brought his 'cron army into school way back when they first came out. They were the first army I ever saw in 40k, and I knew nothing of Marines, the orkz, or anything. But I saw them and knew that if I could ever afford to play the game, I would play Necrons.

Inquisition by far having access to the might of the entire imperium along with the awesomeness that is grey knights and sisters.

In background terms I voted necrons because if you were a guardman and shot a necron warrior down for it to self repair and stand up you would be pretty scared. Necrons are just so cool!

Gotta say it's a close race for me between IG and Dark Eldar.

Dark Eldar have a awesome premise in my mind, dark, torturing melevolent race. Slave drivers, makes the urge to buy them almost unstoppable, just to have a chance to paint them. But got to hold off until theres new models, to paint the current ones would not do the scheme I have in mind justice.

IG, I like them because they most resemble a cohesive military force. You can't depend on just tanks or air, in the end you need lots of boots on the ground, some heavy fire support and those specialists to get the job done.

I have to say imperial guard. They have the most tanks in the whole game, commissars, psykers, convicted guardsmen,... Seriously, i Think The guard have the best fluff in the whole game. Also, they are just humans, protected by flak vests and armed with lasguns. That's what appeals to me.

They have character, which for me goes a long way.

IG Id say...in a universe of superhumans clad in supposedly impenetrable armor, hulking monsters of all colors, and nihilistic beings taking slaves and or sucking the souls out of everything they can the Guardsman is a regular guy just like you or me clad in armor not to different from what we use today using weapons not too far advanced from what we currently use...how is that not awesome in and of itself...

Necron are a close second as anything with the undead theme is inherently awesome to me...now space undead well they found a way to improve on an already awesome theme!

The orks arent cool so much as hysterical! Id say they certainly have the best fluff and are by far THE most entertaining army in 40k...but I personally think its a stretch to call them the coolest (and they are my main army at the moment!)

I thank there are dozens of people who are afraid to admit they think space marines are the coolest for fear of being labeled a fan boy or something. how many of us started playing because space marines are so cooool?

I actually started playing because of CSM which you could say is some varient of SM but my current favourite is Eldar.

If a faction can be played as a stand alone army, it's an army.

Considering that 40k conflicts take place on a squad/platoon/company level, I wouldn't say the fact any of these armies can be played automatically makes them armies.

But yes, Sisters of Battle are by far the coolest force in 40k. Everyone else is just jealous.

Becuase most of those are fans of one particular strain of either the WH or DH codexes. Those who play only Sister of Battle believe that there should be an option for SoB as a cool army (and there should be) while the same goes for whatever Grey Knight players there are.

Tyranids.

Though I've spent the least amount of time playing them, they've always been my favorite. They're the only army that's not humanoid in appearance, and come off being more visually appealing because of it. Fluff wise, at least the previous codex, with them slowly growing newer units based on what they have consumed in this galaxy as counters to what they are facing, is really cool.

If I had to vote for a top (I did) it'd be IG.

Imperial Guard are awesome because they're regular fragile humans fighting against OHMYGODWHATISTHAT.

This is Ollanus Pius, some random guardsmen of one of the innumerable and faceless regiments of Imperial Guard.

This guy is the Ordinary Joe of guardsmen. He is just an ordinary dude who probably struggles to fight one dude by himself and has no chance against any of the primarchs or space marines.

He was literally raised by humans. #$^#ing ordinary humans who couldn't do anything much special. He quickly became pretty much exactly the same as them, a totally ordinary guardsman.

He is made of pure awesomesauce. He stands right in front of Horus. He breathes oxygen and he gaks excrement. He can't do anything to Horus. HE CAN'T KILL YOU WITH HIS BARE HANDS.

The Emperor had to see Olannus die to strike back at Horus. Why? Because the Emperor knew that if any of his sons could strike down such a hopeless, insignificant human then they would have truly fallen. Ollanus Pius was everything he was trying to protect.

So allow me to ask you this... why the @#$^ do some people consider superhumans like all the primarchs, all the space marines, just about everything, etc. cooler than this guy?

Dark Eldar have always been one of the better concepts in my opinion. Only thing that kept me from playing them is the difficulty to actually see the models around here... There is one army in the entire region... and the fact that what I did see of the old models was ugly as gak.

I am a huge Necron fan and have a sizable army for them... however, I am in the process of finishing a Word Bearer army and I have to say that I like the feel of the army. I am currently getting into a Tyranid vibe though.

* Chaos: Word Bearers

... I was considering Eldar, but after some long soul-searching.. I have opted to go with Tyranids. I do not want another "shooty" army and the 'Nids offer me a change of pace.

Okay- HOW THE DID TAU BECOME COOLER THAN TYRANIDS?!?!?!

Ultramarines, gold and blue through and through.

Looking at the new Dark Eldar models, I have to admit that they look cool.

My next army will be the 'Nids. No question about that. I picked up the DE when they first came out and then I subsequently sold them off. Same thing with the Tau. I had a bunch of customization on my Tau, but they lost every battle they fought. :-(

Why lump Chaos space Marines and Daemons in same group under just Chaos? I like the Daemons...but not the CSM.

I personally feel that the two (2) Codexes for Chaos should be mix-and-match. You should be able to have CSM's and Daemons fighting side-by-side... and when I say daemons, I do not mean the generic "Summoned Daemons" that the Codex: CSM provides you.

I would love to see the ability to mix-and-match units between the two books.

I constantly flip flop on this issue, it depends if I have read an awesome thread on a particual race or not.

I'm always split on this. The Orks because they are awesome green killing machines, the Eldar for being manipulative and having such powerful psychics and the Space Marines for having awesome quotes and being multicoloured killing machines.

Maybe if they made Sporkdar then I could decide. As for now, call me undecided.

Since Im about to start a necron army I had to go with them.

However, there is one thing I find to be a bit of a bummer about the Necrons...a rather inflexible and uncustomizable background. They simply are what they are...slaves.

Most other armys you can customize and make your own to differing degrees. You can create your own Chapter for Space Marines & CSM, army/planet for IG, Craftworld for Eldar, cabal for DE, clan/WAAAAHG for Orks and so on. Necrons dont have that. Unless there is something Im missing Necrons are just a slave army for the C'Tan, and since there are only 4 of them (2 in game) theres no options there either.

They are a potent army, and will be fun on the table, but nothing to get into beyond that. Unless theres something Im missing...dont have a codex yet, just ordered it today.

Simple because they are fun. Arguably the only truely happy race in 40K. And you can get away with having a really silly looking army while still keeping it close to the fluff

The Orks of Tau for me..the Tau lore I found interesting and the Orks just have a great amount of character.

I never really liked Tyranids or Necrons for just that reason...they are so dull and single-minded. Not much room for interesting characters :/

Tyranids, because I like painting them while watching animal planet.

Imperial Guard; it's those tanks and the huge amounts of infantry that I like about them. Plus, I'm a bit of a treadhead.

Dark Eldar. Love the fluff, used to play em'. Its just raiding and pillaging in the 41st millenium is awesome.
