Sadly, I'm underwhelmed only by Seth, the one I'm most likely to use, since I play Fleshtearers. And something looks wrong with the vanguard vet sgt.

From a look at the plastic sprues, it looks like you don't have to use the wings, if you don't want to. After all, I think they're just decoration for the jump packs.

Whos that Astorath guy??

Its a good start for Blood Angels though but Seth looks like the Kahn a stuck in the same old RAAAARRRRR pose.

Plastics though Im a fan of the plastics and one of those sanquinary guard combined with a command kit would make a hell of a Commander.

Lemartes is looking good. I like Sanguinor as an ott character.

Death Company look great, the golden dudes less so.

Seth is a bit underwhelming, if I were making fleshtearers, I'd be having a look at all those circular saws on the Ork dred n kans...

Astorath is looking a bit pants to me, perhaps it's the paintjob or the angle.

So the death company with jump pack still won't have harnesses?

I like Lemartes and Seth. Don't like Astrorath. New Baal is nice. I even like the Death company. But, nipples on the armor for Sanguinary Guard and Astrorath and Sanguinor? Really? And I don't like the gauntlet bolters. They look too big, heavy, and cumbersome to be carried like that.

is it just me or does lemartes just look like a LOD with a jump pack? Also I think the death company maybe the sanginuar honor gaurd would be a fun paint.. though maybe a bit of a challenge.

I have to say that other than the pred and the DC (excluding the stupid monk haircut head), most of these models look pretty, well... naff?

Lemartes looks OK, but he looks like he is mincing forward, rather than jumping about shooting people in the face and stabbing them in the boy zone.

Seth is probably the most interesting and best posed of the special characters. The rest of them just look boring and static. Plus the wings all look horrible and static and rubbish...

And I had not noticed those horrible wrist bolters before. Ew, just ew. Not balanced at all and look like something a drunken Ork Mek would have jammed onto his armour.

...Didn't take me long before I pre-ordered the Codex >_>

I'll hold off on the models until they're available through other stores though.

So glad the Baal Predator is all plastic now, I hate hybrid kits. Likewise for the Death Company.

I'll be picking up:
Codex (already got my pre-order in)
Sanguinor
At least 1 Death Company set
Sanguinary Guard
Baal Predator

...Just not all at once D:

Lemartes is awesome!

And so are the Sanguinary Guard.

And BOTH look to be fairly easy to de-bling and de-Blood Angel, making me even happier!

And, of course, making GW more money, but then, I guess we'll both be happy!

The Greek/Roman armour the Blood Angels are based on actually used to have these too, so it is historically accurate:

Heck, there were even variants that had them pierced!

And really, if you don't like the nipples, they're easy enough to scrape of with a file.

the nipples don't bother me as much as the toes for some reason. my fav sculpt is probably seth out of the bunch (not necessarily because he's missing both the above but because i like the pose). i've got enough BAs to last me for another 2 editions (3500pts) so i don't need any of the others.

Mephiston's armour has them too, and he's a pretty old model now. It's never really bothered me, to be honest.

Oh, and before I forget, I'm really not liking the Astorath model, so I'll either being using a conversion or not at all.

If I had to hazard a guess, the pricing is reflective of the fact that you also get 5 jump packs along with your DC, which separately would be $8 USD. You still get a better deal with the Space Wolves, unfortunately, but those jump packs at least narrow the gap somewhat.

Well, my prediction on how the sprues would be done is mostly accurate. Didn't expect the Sanguinary Guard but otherwise...

Anyway, I'm gonna have to get three or four of those pred sprues to give my loadout more options. Maybe a couple of Death Company so I can upgrade the look of my Assault Marines. I'll get a Sanguinary Guard but only for conversions.

33 bucks for 5 models is weird pricing. Overall I like what I'm seeing though. Unfortunately, Seth is pretty underwhelming, and he was the model I was hoping for the most. I am a big fan of the Sanguinary Priest model though. It has such a great 2nd ed-esque sense of simplicity. No need for excessive bling, just a solid, good looking model.

One thing I find funny is that the Flesh Tearers shoulderpads are actually CHEAPER than the ones made by Chapterhouse Also, I think Green Blow Fly ows Lunahound a devastator box right now or something. That new Baal is looking pretty nice.

If I were to start a Flesh Tearers army (I don't think I'm crazy enough to start another MEQ army) I'd probably just get 2 boxes of Death Company, a few packs of Flesh Tearers shoulderpads and Seth, and strip some of the Marines I painted when I was a kid.

Well folks, this pretty much seals it. After adepticon, I'm putting my Ultra's on hold to make a BA army. I've been bouncing around an idea of winged jump troops for a few years now and GW does me the favor of putting them into a codex.

While I'm not a fan of Blood angels, I am a fan of good models. Sadly, I don't see any really good models there. Way too busy and the wings just look silly on a power armored figure. Seth is the only guy who still sorta looks like a Space Marine.

Sure the DC all look like marines, but black is such a horrible color that mutes out all of the little details. The last guy is 'aight as long as you can do a head swap.

Not a fan.

Wow, I'm really glad I'm not a BA player. Sanguinar, Astorath and the Sanguinary guard are all fairly revolting.

My whole world is turning upside down! In one week I've found PP figures I actually like the look of and now Space Marine models that I actually hate. Its bizarro world!

Wow, those models are quite amazing, IMO. They certaintly set the BAs apart from other SMs.

Not entirely sure I'll start a new army, but I'll definitely grab the codex when I can; if the models are anything to go by, it looks like it might be a radical rewrite, similar to the 'nid codex.

Absolutely stunning in my opinion.

I think i'll pick up a box of DC, and maybe a box of assault marines to try and cobble together a nice looking squad of 10 DC with all those bits, could look ok. Alternatively I might try to get some old metal DC from eBay, as they still look pretty amazing.

I can't wait until the 3rd!

I'm thinking the Death Company box is akin to the Black Templars upgrade sprue or the Dark Angels Veteran box.

5 complete models and then bitz to do another 15.

I don't think the price is too bad, to be honest. (Not that I'll buy them from GW direct anyway). But £20 UK for 5 plastic models with a load of accessories/weapon options is pretty good, when you consider that the previous DC models were £18 for 5 plastic/metal hybrids, with ONE Power weapon. ONE. Also, the old DC had some problems with staying together, the metal shoulderpads never fit the plastic arms well, and usually had to be bent into shape to fit. I'd gladly pay an extra £2 for the convenience of plastic kits really.

Edit: This is assuming you're going to make DC though. If you're using these bits to kit out other squads then yeah, it's expensive for an upgrade sprue.

That it easily top three worst modeling jobs I have seen. The only thing truly worse is that A) Someone thought it would be a good idea and B) Someone was willing to sculpt them.

The new look elites fit with the BA fluff to, Blood Angels have a much longer life span then a codex SM. (Dante is like 1100). They stated in the old codex that the blood angels have the most ornate and intricate looking armour and weapons due to the practice they get while living that long.

"Physically the Blood Angels are among the longest lived of all the Space Marine Chapters." "These vastly extended lifespans allow the Blood Angels to perfect their techniques in art as well as in war. They have centuries in which to perfect the disciplines to which they turn their minds. This accounts for the fact that the Blood Angels' armour and banners are among the most ornate ever produced." - Codex: Blood Angels (4th Edition)

I think the Death Company sprue is intended to be the "upgrade" sprue. You don't have to use them as DC and if you don't you have a TON of bits to spread around the rest of your army.

The lack of Jump Pack-strap equipped torsos for the DC is a little disappointing. Easily fixed by combining them with a regular assault squad and using the extra parts on regular troopers, though.

I think that's kind of the point as he represents the darker aspects of the Blood Angels with Sanguinor represent the more positive ones?

Well, I can't say I'd field them that way either, but don't they now have the 'relentless' USR, making them somewhat understandable?

OMFG! Must buy a codex and a bunch of characters . . . I'm sure I can find uses for them in my other marine armies =D

Plus a Flamestorm Cannon on a predator . . . Correct me if I'm wrong . . . But that's plain awesome, wrapped up in the fires of SWEEEEETTT!!!

And now less of the over-excited hobbyist, and more sense . . . Those DC and the guard also look awesome. I'm a big fan of the wings on the back (Seraphim for example), it definetly fits in with the angelic/mythological theme of the BA and successors . . . Personally I would go with a successor chapter, if only to buck the trend etc. =]

I like the Sanguinary Guard, but I was gonna use 'em for Dark Angels Assault Marines, if I was ever gonna use 'em at all.

I absolutely detest Astorath though. Stupid model, and is in my hall of shame.

Quick question:

How many people are going to buy at LEAST one of these models just to paint?

Of that number, how many are starting armies based off of that one model?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I know I'm buying Seth to paint, but I can't abandon my Guard or my Order of the Redeeming Blades to do another bloody army.

I've got to agree on Astorath... that was the only character model that made me think "meh".

Of the plastic kits I think the DC are way too over the top but that can be fixed by mixing the parts in with standard troopers.

@Kanluwen: i will be buying a few of the character models to paint for ebay...
it will be a chore though, as i'm a not really feelin' any of the new minis, except for the Death Company...
Lemartes will be first up, as he is the best of the bunch...
Sanguinor will be next, as a copy of the 'Eavy Metal version should fetch a bit of cash...
Seth, just because of that huge chainsword...

we'll see after that, but i just want the Death Company box because it's the best looking release...

cheers
jah

The paintjobs really let some of these models down, I hate the way that the 'Eavy metal team seem to be stuck in the 90s when it comes to painting technique (especially that they seem to be allergic to the washes )

I'll be getting Astorath, and maybe Lemartes, on the release but I'll be sticking with the Vanilla codex. I might get the DC box to make new Sternguard, but I'll reserve judgment on the Sanguinary Guard until I've seen them with a different paint job

EDIT: and Seth might look better with just a different head

I'm not quite as jazzed about these as I was with the SW releases. I'm not sure I'm really big on the angellic wing attachments to the jump packs.

All in all, all I can really say is this: why is there no flying transport in the first wave of releases? I foresee several modified Valkeries in future BA armies. Kind of a shame.

Models look good, little over the top but it is 40k, like the Dracula armor though similar to early Mephiston anyway. Definitely like the Modred Guard but no wings (Hmm, parts for elite Seraphim squad with wings, drool). I wish the Pred. was the old beefy type that looked more like the Abrahms US tank, instead of just a turret on a rhino. At least everything is plastic so side guns can be magnetized so as not to break and still move about. No pics on maybe Valkyrie/Vulture BA flying vehicle? Can't wait till DA then it will be wing overload. Some competition for KFC. mmm, spicy wings.

Some interesting models there. I had similar knee jerk reactions last night when I first saw them. Astorath is a curious figure as a nod to both the vampiric theme and Bram Stoker's Dracula (the film with Keanu Reeves and possibly the worst Dracula ever). My real dismay is that once again the Eavy Metal team have butchered figures just as they did with the Minotaurs. Someone really needs to scream at those fools. The Sanguinor model is nice apart from the fake metal painted sword which is a technique I loathe - Cristos Achelios was great back in the 80s but please stop trying to paint miniatures like him. I'd love to see what John Blance would do with these as I think all the ideas are lifted from his overly gothic style. If you place these figures among his art work you can see why the forced static pose angels look quite iconic (as in something from medival Christian icons). If you move these figures over to a High Church theme and then emphasise the forced poses they could be quite a stunning army. I think the big problem would be trying to make them look 'realistic' but then I think thats where the Flesh Tearers fit in. Im disapointed they didnt redo Mephiston and I would have liked to see a new dreadnaught accesory sprue so you could make a plastic furioso and breathe some life into the standard dreadnaught figure.

Sanguinor would make a great terrain piece, painted marble on top of a plinth (hint: this is not a compliment).

I love that you could very easily make a plastic Dante with the Sanguinary Guard figures.

I've never understood why people continually act surprised by this.

We've been getting Marine models with hair since... well, forever, really. Most (not all, see the DA sprue) of the plastics since the RT sprue have been bald, presumably because GW couldn't come up with a decent way of doing hair on plastics that looked reasonable... but there have been a huge number of metal models with hair.

Is it just me, or do the Death Company look a little taller and/or leaner than normal marines? Perhaps they are scaled up a tad? I would really appreciate it if they were...

I will be picking up a box of those Sanguinary Guard though, and promptly breaking it down for parts. Wings for Seraphim, muscled breast plates for Inquisitors, all manner of good stuff in there, except for the rather silly forearm bolters. I think they would have been better to stick with a sleaker GK style than those big things.

I don't think the Death Company are taller, though they do have varients of the SM Assault running legs, which makes the model look a few MM taller and thinner.

And I think I will follow your lead as to the inquisitors being made from the Sanguinary Guard - Great Idea!

Though I understand why they didn't follow the GK style of wrist mounted bolter - if the rumour mill is correct, GK's will get released in plastic soon, and so GW doesn't want to start mixing up styles too much.

On an aside, has anyone had a peek at what the rules are for the two new special characters are? I'd really, really be interested.

I don't even play blood angels and I have to admit this stuff looks amazing.

Predator with remodelled sponsons that look sturdy? sign me up, I'll just convert the autocannon (flamestorm cannon looks boss)

Sanguinary guard? if nothing else its awesome helmets for sculpture plating on my landraiders and arm mounted bolters for sternguard. So, definently getting a box at some point.

Seth? sweet god emperor, only way that model could be better is if the wings on the backpack are a seperate bit. Bit of conversion work and you have a captain with a relic blade chainsword.

Very excited for these new releases! And thank god they gave lemartes a resculpt.
