Warhammer and 40k are hardly original, but I'm pretty sure that they predate Blizzard. For this to be true, GW would have to own a time machine.
edit: didn't see your edit when I said that. Still, I'm not too bothered by it. When someone doesn't know what the hell they are criticizing, then there is no point arguing.

You really should see the 3ed Tyranids before the newer models came out.
3ed was also before Starcraft and the "zergy" ones came out shortly after Starcraft was launched.
15645
Post by: Cheesepie
Yes i have Luna, I am a proud owner of the BBB and i still have fond memories of them
But that raises a good question, zerg might not be ripped off of the nids, as much, then
where were zerg ripped off? and dont say that it was their idea, because that's hard to very hard to believe due to all the sci fi similarity types
but we can all agree that WarCraft is very very similar to warhammer fantasy
It might just be possible that blizzard got leaked data containing what is now current nids
GAH its a conspiracy i say, someone call the media, the world must be informed
Oh and i think i derailed a little bit
15115
Post by: Brother SRM
The Zerg are just a combination of the bugs from Starship Troopers and the movie Aliens - similar can be said for the Tyranids. Space Hulk was basically Aliens: The Boardgame when it came out back in the mid-late 80s.
I don't think Blizzard got leaked anything. A bunch of guys who liked Lord of the Rings and Warhammer made a fantasy RTS and that was that. If I recall correctly GW started getting super-protective over their IPs after Warcraft 1 came out though, since the Orc designs were very close to the Warhammer Orcs.
24182
Post by: Ultra mortalitas
Yeah, youre right, as soon as realised that space hulk was base of the movie aliens i saw pretty much every single thing that was base of it.
Now lets back the topic

Post by: KidSquid
Actually Blizzard approached Games Workshop about making a Warhammer fantasy RTS, Games Workshop said no. Thus Warcraft was borne. Blizzard has never had an original idea since the company was created. They have a very good business model of taking existing genres and simplifying them.

Post by: chromedog
And Leading Edge games came out with an "ALIENS:the boardgame" in 1990 as well (where each of the characters had their own playing piece and stat card.).
Both 40k and Starcraft borrowed from the same source material - in the same way that all "traditional fantasy" writers have borrowed from collective folklore.

Gah! I hate when people do that, fluffwise, the original chapters are the strongest, but are pretty much equal in strength.
While other founding chapters are as good as the 1st foundings, they all have a thing they are strong at (like the original chapters) thus making as good as the original chapters.
So basically, all chapters are equal in a way.
Edit: Also, The reason for so many chapters is that so no sm player is disappointed with the fluff of his army

I know some guys like this! And pretty much any repeated phrase that wasn't funny the first time gets on my nerves. I know a guy who says "he loves it" whenever you make an armor save. He quasi-narrates the game which is fine ("And my shot hits, and... looks like it wounds aaaand..."), but that one phrase. I know I periodically annoy my opponent's by saying really exaggerated things or flat out making up rules in a joking way ("I use "Glimmering Aura of Chaos" to prevent your psychic powers and shooting for the turn.") but to be fair I only do that when they're boring me to tears in the first place.

It's not even that. MOST of the time where people are "looking down" on someone who bought on eBay or outside of the FLGS...it's because of the fact that they come in there, acting as if they're entitled to gaming space/time even if they do nothing to actually support the FLGS proper.

Once again , you assume that it takes place in a FLGS ,

Oh , of course with the usual rules like it should be assembled and painted etc etc.
Please, show me a GW that actually has barred you from playing because you didn't buy from them directly or a GW shop where they've encouraged someone to not play against you for not buying from them directly. Go on, I can wait.
If someone chooses to not play you because you didn't buy directly from the store, it quite likely means you did/said something that they feel is a bit cheeky on the store's premises. It happened quite a bit at my old FLGS, namely because there was a certain someone who did nothing but complain that "even paying for shipping, it was cheaper for him to buy online than to support the shop because they only gave a 25% discount".

My biggest peeve by a wide margin is listening to people try to give me or other players completely stupid advice when they clearly have no idea what they're talking about. Also when they just can't admit that a given scenario would probably have them beaten, so they make up ridiculous tactics and scenarios, like "I don't care if you're castling with monoliths, I'll just outflank with all my Vendettas and phase you out turn 1" or "You should really take wraiths, I use them to wipe out Harlequin squads like 9/10 times."
Especially when people complain about balance when their opinions clearly reflect the fact that they failed Probability 101 (or never took it).
I hear it a lot with regards to 'crons both at my store and in forums.
"Wah, 3e/4e crons were broken because warriors could kill land raiders!" Yeah, at a 1/54 chance per shot. That motivational "Necrons: my basic gun can kill your strongest tank, this is fair and legal" makes me rage so hard.
"Only take a lord and like 100 warriors, it's all you need" No, this was never a good strategy, jesus
"You need to take like 40 warrors or you'll be too easy to phase out"

I didn't take the time to read this but ya'll relize Warcraft and SC were suppose to be Warhammer and 40k games but they were never licensed so Blizzard was born and changed them to SC and WC and thus what they are today. O well *shrug* I now wait to be banned for that lol.

My girlfriend picks up and model and says,"Pew, Pew, Pew!" while pointing it at me.
"Oh I forgot to shoot with those guys, you don't mind if I do that now, do you?"
"Those guys need to seriously get laid...." (a guest of my neighbor said that the other day, after acting really interested in what my friends and I were doing for about 30 minutes)
And I don't like reading the abreviations here. There are entirely to many and quite frequently they aren't even correct. So I spend 10-20 seconds trying to decipher what someone was trying to talk about. Not much of a short cut.

but i was meaning to say, that my friend that also play
40k said that too me.
For all you sending my PMs about how wrong i am
i just want to say, that it was my friend that said that if i did not make myself
clear before. Personalty i already knew almost everything you were trying to tell me.
Except that Star craft was possibly a GW game, i always thought that the 2

"Grow up and be a man"
My faith in humanity sinks a little every time i get that.
It is a poor lifeless husk of a man that disallows himself enjoyment just for the sake of appearing extra mature or maskuline.
"You should try a wash"
when someone who barely grasps drybrushing sees a finished best-painted -winning model.
"X unit sucks, you should use Y instead."
So, uncalled for, yet so common.
And the final dreaded question that keeps popping up:
"How much have you spent on this hobby?"

I hate it when people hate on competitive players. Sorry, I AM competitive. I hated it when I played street fighter and people called so-and-so 'cheap' and I don't like it any more when I see it in 40k. I might not use an army thought of as cheesy ( I play tau), but I do play to win. I do try to be mild mannered and polite about it.
This isn't really a thing that one "hears", but... I hate how this one guy at my LGS smells. Ug, really, the guy doesn't bath. No joke.

You always get it as if there is some cheap option out there.(Please don't attempt to suggest any) I've gotten into a lot of games and in the end you are out $200-$300 dollars for an army and rulebooks/army books before you know it

There are two that always get me.
1) Anytime anyone says Eldars... that drives me mental.
2) Anytime non wargamers refer to models as figurines or action figures, its not the words so much as the tone of voice everyone seems to to put on when they say it. I poke fun at myself with the gf and say "Im off to paint my man-dollies" which for some reason always sounds better. :\

Firstly, you can type fast and still make a grammatically correct statement.
Secondly, X is better than Y is THE WORST thing ever, as it leads to hour long arguments that lead nowhere and just get me pee'd off.
Finally, my pet hate is "Where's the [insert tiny piece of wargear here] on that model? He/she can't use it."
Oh I'm sorry for not having the time and patience to glue and paint a grenade pack on every marine, a pistol on every marine. Whatever. It states clearly in the rules it's there. Aslong as my squad has the correct main gun it shouldn;t matter whether they've got their pistol + ccw. How many Space Wolves or Chaos Marines do you see with a bolter, pistol, and ccw? I never have. So shush!
Ugh! I need to vent anger more often, I feel so much better now. =p

Yeah, when I was working at GW one of the regulars (a phenomenal painter) was playing is first battle with his newly made and painted Battlewagon. Some little kid decides to move it backwards and forwards on the board making engine noises. :O luckily no damage was done, but I had to have a chat to the kid's parents about keeping him under control, as people spend a lot of time and money on their models.

On a more seirous note, I can't stand it when people make minor adjustments to rules to give themselves the advantage and actively iterate it to make it sound like a real rule. I'm a new player and sometimes this has snuck past me, but nowadays I spend the time to read their codex or clarify rules with other (more trustworthy) players just to make sure so he doesn't pull fast crap on me.

This! I can't stand it when people say vulgar things out of lack of creativity. I'm all for taunting during and outside of a game. But put some ounce of brainpower into it rather than reaching for the crudest thing that comes to mind. If I wanted to hear that type of language I would go to a bar/arcade/mall/etc.
I don't game too often at stores, even when I was heavily into MTG. I used to hate/love it when everyone at the store assumes your a newbie because you've never been there and then get pissed when you beat them. I say love because it's satisfying beating someone who is so full of themselves they underestimate someone they don't know, which I would think the opposite would be the better option. I saw hate because sometimes the person whines and complains about their luck because it couldn't possibly be that new guy they never met before beat them on his own accord. Just takes the fun out of it for me, and if it's not fun, why bother?
After reading through this thread I realized 90% of what annoys people doesn't bother me, I guess I just ignore it.

Once, when I was at a GW store, I was playing some game against some 8 year old, whom was using the store's Ultrasmurf army, but, he had attached the sticky drinking straw he had just used to consume a can of red bull (don't ask me how he got it) to the front of a rhino and was calling it a 'Super-boom Cannon' or something similar. Anyways, this kid was seriously upped, and keep saying his rhino had said huge gun and that whatever it was pointed at, the whole squad would die instantly. Upon both mine and a Red Shirt's intervention, one, about how such a thing was rediculous and two, taping straws covered in gak to the store's surprisingly well painted vehichles was a big no-no, he chucked a tantrum, picked up 'his' rhino, and ditched it at the ground as hard as possible. He was booted out of the store promptly.

You asked for it.
Parents insulting the hobby is the wargamers equivalent to a 9/11 event. The results are catastrophic, resulting in some young gamers giving up the hobby to remain "normal" in the eyes of their elders. In short, it is like a good kick in the nads.

As for the fantasy one that one really burns my ass, I tried to get back into fantasy and its like playing 40k with your hands tied to your nards. Its like an excercise in stupidity when I have to paint 20 models to gain rank bonuses when only 5 do anything, then you lose combat and loose all 20 anyway, that and its all about who has the better deathstar. Regardless after seeing the "deep tactics" (aka the level I have to sink to) in order to win I said no thanks. I'd rather play war of the ring over fantasy any day and I ing hate LotR.

So , so true . I enjoy this hobby it encorporates so much I like in one neat tidy package. I like art , so painting my minis or even drawing stuff , I get so much inspiration from 40k. I like war stuff , sci-fi/fanatasy anything with an interesting sotry line and playing games. Urgh, I hate this too. Playing at my local hobby shop with a buddy, we are newish to the game so are still unsure about some of the rules, so we were looking up a rule when a parent came over to the table and started picking up our stuff to look at as if it were for sale. There's also a couple of younger players that own a mish mash of figures from pretty much all the 40k armies and are always using the demo stuff that the owner uses to teach new players, in one afternoon they must of broke about 10 orks, the owner was not best pleased

Maybe you should calm the hell down. Perhaps someone was trying to buy a gift or something for a gamer friend/relative. God forbid you have a normal interaction with another human being, who maybe doesn't know exactly where it says on the back of a box of gaunts how many models are contained.

Same with mine, used to love having a rustle through the bits bin, or just hanging around and chatting to the staff between games or whilst painting, but then the new manager started there they stopped caring about the regulars, and instead began focusing on just selling armies and the like to first time buyers, making it more about the money than the hobby.

This is definitely off topic since it's more of a forum pet peeve, but I have to agree with this (poorly written) post. We already know who wrote it; you don't need to add your name to the end of the post. Yes, I'm looking at you Panic, Schepp, etc!
I also hate when people have the signature "98% of <group of people> thinks/likes <something>. If you are the 2% that <something else in contrast> add this!"
Back on topic! I hate hearing the total when ringing up a new purchase at the hobby shop. "So that's a box of lootas/burnas (there's only FIVE complete minis in here, and only four of them what you wanted!), a Dark Elf army book and two pots of paint. That will be your first born." I know it's an expensive hobby, but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with incessant price increases on THE SAME MERCHANDISE.

""Definitely getting my kids into wargaming."" -- do it.
My son got me into 40K - now I play more than he does.
Don't expect too much from youngsters (mine's 13) they are just playing for fun. I let his army and his friend's army gang up on my army - 3-4 turns of utter madness - and they are thrilled to beat me. I think I did actually teach them some rules, but the only way to teach them is to play... It's probably easier to put up with your own kid (and since I've raised 2, I have a lot more patience than I did at 20!)
oh yeah -- this is a pet peeve thread: How about someone who complains about how their army sucks the whole game - that way if they win it is a great victory, and if they lose, well, you were bound to win, weren't you? That's just a lack of sportsmanship that you'd see in anything from baseball to martial arts.
ps My wife doesn't ask what I spend on 40K - and I don't ask what she spends on scrapbooking & theology books. That's the magic of marriage. (I did assure her it's cheaper than golf. or shiney cars. or hunting, or a boat etc etc)

I don't appreciate it when people talk about things when they are ill informed, like Cheesepie's friend. It's like when you're around drunk/high people at a party and they start talking about politics or important issues and attempt to convert as many people as they can to see it their way.
Same thing with Xbox vs PS3, they are the same thing, the average person will not notice the difference between blue ray and hd dvd (or in game graphics CoD MW2 is the same on both systems). The sad fact is that people only have money for one console so they need to reassure themselves that they made the right choice or try to make people believe that they possess an inferior gaming platform.
Next time either of these situations happen to you remember:

I've heard that so many times it's not even funny, if you win a game of monopoly do you win the game board aswell? Do you have to give a piece of equipment to the victors of a sports match? Does anything aside from gambling involve the loss of personal property?
So why do people assume that gamers would be so willing to part with fairly expensive (in terms of time and money) game pieces?

Technically it's not, as they can only make profit from the original purchase, that's it. Any further sales provide no profit, unless it's going to be converted, but even then

I have to admit, I hate it when people take the game too seriously. You know the ones; the kind who turn up to a store/club for a game and, if they don't win, they silently loathe everyone for the next three hours and generally dampen the mood. Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with winning or aiming to win (one of the people I play regularly is a power-gamer, but because he has a good sense of humour, he's fun to have as an opponent) but it really ruins the fun for everyone else if you not only have to win, but crush your opponent mercilessly doing so, and if you lose you sulk about it. Cool for tournaments, not so in casual games, methinks.
EDIT: except the sulking. That's still not cool. Ever.

Does this refer to copied books or using non- GW figures in GW games. Because objecting to that is narrow minded elitism and particlarly annoying. I've come across GW purists and hate pretty much everything they have to say, it's like kids with their designer clothes in they playground.

The ones that I've run into and dislike :
"Hey, can I have your (insert bits here)?"
Uh, no. And stop asking everyone, all the time, every time you go. We're paying for our mini's, if you can't afford to buy them, maybe you shouldn't be playing. It wouldn't be so bad if the guy weren't obviously old enough to get a job.
"You're definitely going to want to have these in your army."
Depending on who it is, I can take it with a grain of salt and try to learn something. If I was planning on breaking down and playing marines I might listen if my friend who does play them was giving me advice. But when the guy, of whom the general consensus of the club is that we've seen him play once in 6 months, and poorly at that, is trying to tell someone just getting into the hobby what to put in their army, yeah. That irks me. I actually had to stop playing, draw the poor kid and his dad aside, and let them know that he might not be the best person to talk to, and pointed out several other more experienced players with the particular armies he was looking at to get knowledge from, where and when we usually met, and an open invite to come watch and play.

I found a new hate the other night. I was playing a teaching game with a teenager - I don't want to call it a kid, and was attempting to be as fair as possible. For example whenever he came out with a rule that seemed a bit far fetched I suggested he might want to check it (he was playing with one of my own armies so I know the rules) and he kept telling me that his Dad let him play that way. The game could have been over after two turns because he was not very good but I kept it going for as long as possible (5 turns) to try and give him as much practice with the rules as I could. He lost by 2 objectives to one but then insisted that he had won because he had more models on the table at the end. The mission was objective based and he was IG while I was SM and had diliberately picked an easy list.
Anyway the point of this long winded bable is that the teenager had asked me to help him while we played and to teach him as we went along but didn't want to listen to anything that contradicted what he wanted to do. This has happened before with playing kids - sorry teenagers. Maybe it is just the ones at my FLGS but as a result of this I am not playing anymore teaching games until I have a son then I'll make the little rat do pull ups everytime he cheats.
21846
Post by: Arheiner
"I won, I had more objectives"
Yeah, seems obvious, but this came from a guy who surrendered before i'd even had my second turn in a match where he was cheating in the first place, challenged me to a 950 point game and used a list from a 1500 point game he'd played the previous week. Even worse to me is he played with a foot in his model box all game, crushing everything and at one stage even tried to blame me for it.

I hate people picking up my models, generally it doesn't happen much as we seem to have a fairly mature bunch of youngsters in the store, there's just a couple of the Sunday-morning-kids that needs locking up in the Snotling Cages in the Squig Cave... ohh er I mean stock room.
I always make a point of asking before taking a look at a model, it's just courteous and you never know if it's just been glued etc.
I'm really surprised no on has measured this yet: over-measuring. It happens alot but the best example: his scouts are 2" from a 2-storey building and roll a 5 for difficult terrain, so they can all reach the first storey. The player then goes on to move them a further 6" for thier "move".
I let it slide as the only thing in range was PM's in a Rhino but there's a couple of gamers at the store who always move that extra 1/2".
Ohh and tricksy infiltrators fething up my nice gunline, why can't they slog it out like the rest of us :p
