One of those 5ways that actually work!, A story of five fatties terribly afraid of failing to paint. @ 2010/04/12 13:58:40

Post by: proximity

Well, after so many of these continuously fail, some of us decided to get off our butts and actually try to make one of these group projects work.

Five of us in Wellington (NZ) got together recently, and realised that whilst our problems were somewhat different, they all required the same solution - a fully painted army that needed the motivation only a group effort could provide!

The five participants are:

Charlie St Clair

Army Chosen: Adeptus Mechanicus (Semi-Mech Imperial Guard)
Blurb: I've been around for a few years in this silly roundbase game now. I've been looking for an excuse to try out a lot of the techniques that the Forgeworld painting book display, so I see this as my chance. For the last year and a half I've been playing a lot with my Orks, and am getting a little tired of them. It's going to be pretty difficult to top how they've done gameplay wise, but they've been a bit of a let down on the painting side of tournaments, so I'd like to use this as my chance to compete in that area again.... hopefully!
I've been really struggling as of late to get more than a test model and a few proxy games out of any army, before I get bored and continue to xbox/what ever other distraction I can find - so I'm hoping the group pressure and pseudo deadlines will help keep me on track!

Bryn Jones

Army Chosen: Space Wolves
Blurb: Brought Rogue Trader when it came out, and tried to play it, but failed at the age of 12! loved all the fluff esp Space Marines; but what 12 year old boy wouldn't. I played on and off for a couple of years then got into it properly 10 years ago, playing in the UK GT in 02, 03, 04, 05. Then had 2 kids which kinda drew and end to it. I then moved to NZ, found a thriving tournament scene, got back in for a season and did okay, but got busy again and sorta got bored of Crimson Fists. Over the years I picked up loads of bits for Space Wolves; had a 13th Company army, new codex, new models which provided a good excuse for doing a quick army to fit around my real life demands. I plan to dip and use every short cut I can to get a great looking army in minimal time.

Jason Isaac

Army Chosen: Tyranids.
Blurb:When I got introduced to 40k (by a fellow "Tale of 5 Gamers" entrant: Chris) maybe 10 years ago now, there was only one army that I even thought about going, NIDS.
I still remember those first few games with the army; well I say army, it was more like bits of cardboard with Ripper Swarm written on them ) but those first few games and that Aliens was my favourite movie at the time, no pansy space elves or 8 foot goons (have both of these armies now, lol) was gonna sway me.
The Nid army I painted back then had a blue body, with a brown to bone carapace. I want to re imagine my first army and keep it in these colours.
Anyone that knows me, knows I hate painting, and I mean HATE... It just drives me batty! So in the 10 years I have been playing I have maybe painted 2 armies (1 fully, 1 nearly fully) and have base coated 1. I am truly the slowest/weakest painter of the group.

Chris Parkin

(Chris is no longer a Banana.)
Army Chosen: Blood Angels.
Blurb: I've been playing wargames since I was about 12. I'm now 31, so a fairly long time. I started off with Epic and moved on to all most every game GW have ever made plus some from a few other companies along the way. Over the last few years my focus, as far as army building, has been to churn armies out in the quickest possible way so I can get them on the table. I'm hoping this project going to force me to take my time and produce some thing half decent.

Jimmy Braid

Army Chosen: Eldar (Harlequins!).
Blurb: I was introduced to 40k through Space Crusade back in high school, going back maybe 15 or so years now!
I then went on to the first edition of space hulk, and 2nd ed. 40k.
I was drawn to Harlequins after playing my first game of 40k, played with a squad of them against a squad of marines.
(I still have a couple of the first harly models I bought and painted).
I think it was the whole aesthetic of the warior troubador (space elf ninja clown ?!), the laughing god, the tragic back ground of the fall of the eldar and the celtic mythological influences that really draws me to the eldar, and the harlequins in partcular.
I have been wanting to build a harlequin list since they were reintroduced in 4th, but work, kids, several other games systems (thanks Chris) and space marines have always delayed that.
I would rate myself as an ambitious but average painter in that I will attempt ambitious paint effects which sometimes work and sometimes dont, usually to my pretty average ability. I not a particularly quick painter and other priorities can often sidetrack my painting time, and attention.
What am I looking to get out of this quintet of army-building madness?
being quite comptitive, painting to a deadline, and having four others to egg me on I am doing it for a challenge, and to end up wih a completed army. AlsoI am a complete famewhore and hope to see my words and 'minis posted on the interwebz :-D

So, there you have the 5 of us!
We got together at a lovely Belgium Pub where there only charged a single limb for a novelty oversized glass of the local brew, and decided to nut out the rules of how we would do this, and came up with the following:
During the months of April, May, June, July, August, we would paint a minimum of 300 points per month. September would see the final 250 points done, hoping to have the army ready for Fields of Blood 2010.
A simple deadline would not be enough though, we needed something to hype the peer pressure, and really screw ones thumbs to the wall. Each month this punishment will change, but for the first month, we need your help!
We are going to create a 2d6 table result, where if you do not meet the required 300 points, you will have to roll 2d6, consult the table, and eat what ever result is rolled. I'm thinking terrible options here guys, you're gonna have to help us come up with some truly nasty - but easily obtainable punishment meals, ranging from downright nasty to actually pretty pleasant, depending on how well someone rolls (I think only the double 6 will be pleasant really ;&gt.

Next up, the test figures!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Charlie
After some hunting about, I really just wanted to quickly throw something together for proof of concept before I progressed further.
After a LOT of searching around, I really loved the look of "The Hoff"s that he converted a while back. I expect to do them a fair bit different once I get into the swing of things, but to begin with - they say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery
I also needed to test whether I could actually sculpt a greenstuff hood etc or not, so whipped up a test figure in a couple of hours.

Chris
Chris came up with a really awesome sons of medusa colour scheme, but he wasn't sold on it and no matter how convincing we were, we couldn't talk him into it (though we have since talked Sirath for those that know him into doing it for his next army, so alls well that ends well!). In the end after painting almost an entire army of different test colour schemes, he came up with the following.

Jason
Jason and I sat down and worked out exactly what he needed to do in order to paint his army, and after all the little steps came together to a completed product, I think he was really happy : D. Given he hasn't finished an army in about 5 years now, Jason's going to need the most motivation, I really hope he finishes as the mini looks great!

Bryn
Bryn managed to achieve a pretty neat looking wolf through dipping. I believe its Bryns goal to show that if you have little time available due to having a rather busy life, that's no excuse and you can still whip up a great army in a jiffy. So far so good Bryn!

Jimmy
Jimmy has started playing around more with the nightmare that is diamond patterns and other such harlequin joys, but the initial test figure looks the goods!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alright, from here on out people will generally be posting their progress and what not, and I'll also throw up a monthly catchup ;D

Hopefully if anyone fails and we dish out some horrid punishments, we'll get some videos up

So far, I've finished my first 140 points, via a valkyrie : D! I'm rather happy with the finished product.

My god! That valkyrie is just gorgeous. Any insight into the techniques used on it? I myself am finding myself a little let down with my guard army, as my painting skill has developed a lot more, so im going to strip them down and start from the beginning, and am looking into how to achieve the scratched and worn armour look on my vehicles.

Thanks, Jack

This is gonna be great !!!

Nice work, so far, all of you !!

That Valkyrie is gorgeous and, as a Space Wolf army builder (haven't gotten to painting yet) with very little time, I'm really thrilled to see what Bryn is doing. I never thought about dipping but that looks fantastic !! What was the dip of choice ?

Best advice I can give is to pick up that forgeworld modelling book. All the advice in there is worth its weight in gold, and is reasonably easy to follow. I'd love to get an airbrush some time in the future, but in the mean time, the advice on weathering powders, oil paints, masking fluids etc has all been extremely helpful.

Let me know if there's any part in particular you'd like to replicate, I'm especially proud of the weathering of the white cog on the wings

Looking forward to the Blood Angels!

As for punishment, paint water sounds like a good idea

I would also suggest a junk food shake, simply take the leftover snacks/junkfood from your last paint/gaming session and put it all in a blender, mix until you've got a pretty smooth blend, but leave some chunky bits in to up the nasty factor abit

Here is a quick update of the Trygon.

Slowly getting through the carapace... maybe 2 more layers to go?

Also need to learn to take better photos, everything looks a bit to yellow as the background is meant to be white

Bugs in general would be a good choice (plus ironic for Jason). Wont kill ya, but pretty gross.
Liver, Lima beans, really hot stuff, blue cheese, strait up buttermilk, Okra, anchoives (maybe).
Maybe some Durian fruit if you can find it. Tastes pretty good, but smells like feet dipped in poo.

Some awesome ideas coming through, hopefully it adds to the threat and no one fails their deadline to find out just how nasty some of this stuff is >

I'm putting the finishing touches on a hellhound now, which will bring me up to around ~280 points, so only a couple more models and I'll have met this months quota already

Well, this is my first post on these forums, so hello everyone.

The mech guard look amazing, well done that man.

As far as eating something awful, I think the worst punishment I can think of would be to make the offender eat the whole of a mixed grill from "The Green Parrot" restaurant. I tried one once and it was the worst meal I'd eaten in a restaurant in a long time; all grease and fat, plus all the different meat cuts somehow tasted the same: grissley and burnt. Of course the said offender should also have to pay for the meal, which would add further motivation.

Cheers,
dave

@Mechanicus guy - nice work with employing the FW book tips. That masking and weathering looks great. Nice red tones.

@Space Wolf guy. Focusing some more effort on the base after dipping the model could make a huge difference. Get some of them there pre-sculpted resin bases or make some cork ones to put them on and give them a paintjob that nicely contrasts the colors on the models.

@Harlequin guy. Might even want to wait to try diamonds, hearts, spades, whatever until you lay down all basecoats on the models. See how they look when that is done and then try some patterns after everything is done for the challenge. Focus on doing some nice smooth basecoats and nice-looking gold and silver metallics first.

Very interesting project - good luck!

If you decide on this punishment, remember to not mix it with alcohol, cause you will get really, really, REALLY sick, even fatal (I think) if the alcohol is strong enough.

Still some mould lines on there, but they will be fixed

Just a few of the really adeptus looking robed figures. Should fit into the army reasonably well.

Couldn't find it - someone probably grabbed it from my house thinking it was theirs when they were over here, so I just grabbed another one.
OH and... a Canadian who speaks French and lives in New Zealand, but uses a Japanese flag for his dakka profile. CONFUSED MUCH ?

The flag on dakka is indicative of the location of your Internet Service Provider, not your actual location or language.

Haha, I know.. I was just teasing a close personal friend.

With that Defiler, I'm considering making a Knight. Does anyone have any links to others people have done with WIPS, or any ideas they could help with on where to go with making one? I'm really keen to hear peoples advice

A knight's basically a mini-titan, usually employed by the adeptus mechanicus.

I'd say they have roughly the armour/firepower of a Land Raider, but they are larger and have void shields and close combat capability.

Even so, good luck with yours proximity, I love knights and I hope yours goes well (be sure to imperial it up a bit!). However, I'm sorry but no knights spring off the top of my head.

Although, I did just go looking and found this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/257382.page#986967 which I think looks quite good, bar the head and square edges IMHO.

Very very nice stuff guys, reminds me of the way my group finds motivation. Painting by peer pressure!

As for your search for Knights, here is a link to my take on the subject, now in the painting stages:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/277551.page

It´s not done by a long shot, but getting closer every tuesday. (I have so little time for hobby stuff right now, sigh......)

I started off with a defiler as well, but went with some plasticard and GS work for parts of it. Other people have used more defiler bits with good results as well.

Really stuck for what bases I should use.

I've narrowed it down to one of the following 4 ranges:

The Iron Halo ones come in a considerable amount cheaper than the rest, but each time I look at them I'm a bit put off by the inconsistencies, one minute it's tiled flooring and cogs, then its just giant cogs, then its wood. It's just a bit all over the show and I don't know how much consistent painting could bring that back.
I've based an army on their bases in the past, and could only use 2/3 of the particular theme I chose, if I wanted it to look consistent.

The second pic look okay, room for a bit of metal and rust effect, but I'm not overly joyous about the brick.

The third pic I'm not very sold on, I think I would have to add some slate to it which is probably a fair bit of work. Not a lot of height to them either, although its bad for gaming purposes; I quite like a little bit of height in the base.

The fourth pic I think is sneaking in as my favourite at the moment? It's reasonably clean looking, a little bit of metal here and there for some rust, very consistent looking, what are peoples thoughts?

I'm pretty stuck for ideas, haha!

The Dragon Forge stuff is great quality; I like the second and third of the ranges you've linked (good stuff on the bases but not too over the top).

I made a Knight from a Defiler and a Sentinel--still need to add the finishing touches! It's not too hard (especially for someone with your skills) and looks pretty good.

Thanks for all your help guys. Looks like the big decision I now need to make is whether I go for that 4th option, or a mix of the 2nd and 3rd.. definitely some food for thought!

Now, Jimmy has given us some updated pictures of his eldar! Unfortunately he confused "make the size of your images smaller" with "make the quality of your photos really terrible!", so instead he provided me with MASSIVE RES pics at a very low quality ! I've done with them what I can, but I'd love to get the opportunity to take some much better pictures. I love the wave serpent so much!

So despite the total lack of updates (I've barricaded myself in the lounge sitting on a heater, watching media and searching for a Siberian Husky breeder that is local, whilst doing the occasional bout of painting) - I did actually get my 300 points done for last month!

First up, I finished another Valkyrie. I didn't bother to take many pictures, as it's nothing you haven't seen already.

And heres a quick very bad snap of them together!

Next up I got a 6 man special weapons squad done. They're a bit of a poo choice, but it allowed me to convert a few up and have them as an intact squad, plus there are worse ways to spend 50 points I guess

Then my PBS arrived, and I got painting! Really happy with how these guys came out. There's one more than is in the photo, didn't realise I had dropped him on the floor until after I was done taking photo's!

I also got a chimera done. Photographing with bright lights at night = suck, so from a couple of angles the light is reflecting off the individual varnish granules and making the odd panel look weird. It looks normal under normal circumstances, so ignore that !

Lastly, my bases also arrived. I got most of these painted, as a bit of batch painting.

Well, that's all from me for May, hopefully I'm a bit more consistent and regular over June eh?

Yep, they are indeed the microart studio menials.

I also wouldn't recommend anyone buy them. Seriously.
The casts were so badly degraded that I had to do a lot of greenstuffing to fix them. Despite ordering six, they sent me 6 of the same figure, rather than mixing it up at all (I find it hard to believe 6 were randomly chosen and just happened to be the same figure 6 times over - and it took them an exceptionally long time to arrive.
The only reason I have any variation in the squad at all is because Bryn had some different ones he lent me that I have already painted up!

I was considering sending them back, but after talking to a friend who ordered some parts a while back; he had the exact same experience. The replacements were in the same condition.

Perhaps they just dont refresh their molds frequently enough, but as is - I wouldn't do business with them again - I'm glad I used this as a trial run before spending a LOT of money there

Your quick limericks nearly made fine malt liquor come out of my nostrils. I love your work; I just wouldn't put the special weapon squads on snow bases.

More importantly, your tech priests should ashamed of their flame throwers. The high pressure tanks look to be metal and rusting. That is simply not safe.

Gas bottles should be physically inspected on a weekly schedule. An annual or biannual pressure test and with a five year ydrostatic test at a minimum. 40KOSHA best not see your pics.

I can't say that i'm prticularly surprised about MA Studios, while the sculpts are moderately cool i don't think the quality of any of their products is particulalrly good.

Did you make your Skitarii like The Hoff on Warseer or did you use a different method?

I cut out the cog shape with paper, traced around it with pencil, sponged down the masking fluid, then painted the cog inside the pencil lines. It needed a large amount of touching up after that, but was happy with the result
