Here it is. My idea is an inquisitor and retinue. Pictured are the acolyte and the "hammer bearer" or servitor. This model will be dragging the large heavy hammer. Modeled very extensively. Having trouble posing the arms. I have about 4 pairs that im still choosing from. The acolyte is still way in progress although a LOT of work has been done already. I plan to sculpt much more detail to the armour. He will be a "true" scale space marine. I want to have him look like a deathwatch marine in training. I am having a hell of a time getting the legs right. I plan to have one up, like the captain morgan pose, on a rock. The other straight. He will be reading from his book. The book was fully scratch built. That was a pain as well. The project is exciting. I have a very dark color scheme picked out. The inquisitor lord is still in the concepts right now. Not sure what i will do.
Also a lot of clean up work after words. Im dreading that phase though. Gray stuff is good, but harder to clean and smooth out onto plastic.

Lookin good man! Do I detect a hybrid in the middle there?
27177
Post by: brush_slip
Thanks Major, Im still having a lot of trouble with the legs, I worked on them tonight, i just cant get them bulked up enough. So now i must start from scratch again.
The hybrid you see is suppose to represent the goones that are shown in the space marine codex. The masked creatures that i have never seen in miniatures before. If you look at the art in the new codex with the chaplain walking through the ranks you see two small creatures behind him. They have masks and are almost hissing at each other. I have no idea what they represent, im trying to create them as servitors or just bearers for the squadron.

Quick pic of my Missionary concept. I want it to be a warrior priest in the future. Old school concept here. I also threw in a new paint job that i want to use these colors on the squad. All colors are dark in base, no white tints. I wanted to keep them all dark as possible but use highlights that pop.
The gold NMM armor was done in a hurry, just kind of thrown on, testing new colors to get a brass look as a finish. I dont think i have achieved this effect. :(

From a distance the effect is starting to show, close up it really doesn't, If you want it to be more brassy I reckon you would need to start with a lighter brown than the one there....
I like the SM chap so far though.

Got to agree with IM. Close up it looks like a brown (unless that's what your going for!). All it needs is a lighter basecoat

I think it looks good so far as a test but i would try again blending the paints together and i think it would look great
27177
Post by: brush_slip
Yea as i said it is just a quick one. I see now that the only way to achieve NMM is with a lighter color. As i said i wanted to keep everything as dark as possible, and i know it didnt turn out as well as i wanted it to, but hey you have to experiment to get it right.
Anyone have any advice for doing the inquisitor lord. I dont want a radical, i dont want any specific affiliation, i want an old school inquisitor. Like when DH first came out. Or when Inquisitor first came out. They are almost like a heretic police department and i love it.

Your best option would be to go onto Google and look for pictures of some old school inquisitor stuff. thats where i get some of my ideas

cool stuff I must say.. not so much a fan of the NMM as it is pretty much yellow. Most NMM go up to an extreme to so light reflextion that if you wanted to go with it go up to a tiny amount of white.

So here is one of the thighs that im in the works on. I want a very complex armor pattern, even though he is a space marine i want him to look honored and very unique in appearance. making him stand out as one of the highest veterans of death watch. Decked out in all kinds of good stuff. Must say that the thigh is TINY. I mean it is small. It is sized to about a terminator leg, but to make those hinges slight peaks was insanely painstaking.
The Inquisitor I, that is just a test to see how plasticard will do making the initial symbol. I think it turned out okay. I will have to work out a few kinks before i even attempt it on the actual space marines legs however.

Today i have begun some more work on the deathwatch veteran well, The acolyte, and i want to know what you guys think. I really am going for the decorated armaments here. This way he will stand out.
In my opinion i like using different thicknesses of plasti-card to do a lot of the work. It seems more natural. Especially after you paint it.
First some pics of the shoulder pads. Bordering and details are being added now.
Next the missionary. Sword or hammer, i have the sword done, here it is...what do you guys think, would a hammer be more pleasing?
And lastly some pictures of my old WH celestial. This darker tint to every color is what im looking for. I was wondering what you guys think. I painted this model about 4 years ago so be gentle.

GD Baltimore.
@Imperial Monkey. This guy wont be dragging the hammer. That will be the weird hunch over model. He is the missionary. I just think maybe keeping the hammers throughout the squad would bring them together a bit more. The will be entered into the 40k squadron or vehicle category.
I hope to start work on the Inquisitor lord as well. He will be the most decorated and probably the most time consuming.
27177
Post by: brush_slip
Some work done. The missionary is starting to come together now. The scrolls were quite difficult. They were done really thin. To bring more authenticity to the model. I also have to decide which power weapon the Death Watch captain should have. Im not sure which one is more suitable, if either of them. Converting will need to be done either way.

Careful with the angle of the hammer head, it seems tilted a little bit! My other suggestion would be to do something more with the skull icons... your whole model and set is going to be so completely custom, it seems almost odd that the relatively simple and common skull sculpts are on there. Maybe design a specific Icon or heraldry for them? I only suggest this because I know what your goal is, and making them familiar in silhouette but unique in detail would be the best bet imo.
Other than that, awesome, there is something very Misgula'ian about the feel, and that is a big compliment!
27177
Post by: brush_slip
Thats a total compliment, that guy is sick. Yea the hammer head is tilted, luckily the head is pinned without glue right now. And as for icons, i see what you mean major, i was thinking the entire mid section was missing something. Have any suggestions? I was thinking of doing something gothic there, much like the leg armor. Anything would help i think i may be hitting a modelers block soon. I cant get the sages right as of right now. Ill email you some pics of them so you could check them out.

K, the ribbing makes me think Mark II armor, so I'm picturing a mix of INQ Coteaz style armor (no back pack) and the Mark 2.
Since the backpack is out of the way, I thought it could be cool to put him in a sleeveless coat, kind of a cross between robes and a trenchcoat. Symbol on the shoulder is a hybrid of the Inq seal, the Aquilla and a jewel just cause I like em. I adorned his right leg and shield, but I'm picturing a pretty plain rest of him, so as not to compete too much with your main dude, but still look badass.
Colors are wonky and gross to make sure each item is relatively distinct, hope it makes sense as it was quick and messy!

That's a very nice looking inquisitor you have going brush, and I like the direction MajorTom came up with. I think he would look good with his left leg up on something (a sort of Captain Morgan stance I suppose), standing on a rock/heretic/alien/demon....you could put something under his foot to designate which branch of the Ordos he's in, that would look really good imo.
Great work so far!

Post by: brush_slip
Thanks Accolade, and thanks major for the reference picture. Yea i have planned on doing the captain Morgan pose the whole time. That was the dynamic of him I want the detailing to stand out the most though. Modeling details on this scale is insane. I think im squinting more and more everyday

Post by: brush_slip
Here is the first completed figure, aside from paint and a few GS details. It is a missionary with a flamer and chainsword. I picked from a few weapons and heads and i think i made a good final decision. The sunglasses run well with the flamer aspect. The rivets are all done with GS "rolls", just cut to size. The plasticard was heated with warm water and bent to position and the bottom half was scupted to look almost like scriptures, this is what will be painted on them for the unique aspect. I also will be doing minor filing of any mold lines left unnoticed and any ugly spots. I do want to do a grip wrap up the staff of the flamer, im not sure though on that. I also have to come up with a base for all of the models in the squad.
All comments welcome.
Enjoy guys and wish me luck on the rest to get finished soon! Im running out of time here.

Maybye some type of handel or somethin? or posibly another smaller fule box?
27177
Post by: brush_slip
I was thinking of another fuel box, i was also thinking of a grip to put higher up, so that when in use it has a functional purpose. The thing is pretty long barreled, I want an older feel to the weapon, a sinister appearance if you will. I think im on my way to achieving it, it just lacks detail compared to the model as a whole. You know?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Maybe another smaller tank between the trigger and the lower pipe that is extending down from the nozzle?
might help bulk out the weapon.
And its pretty minor but the tube running from the backpack tanks to the bottom of the staff is fairly thin compared to the pipes exiting the tanks, maybe thicker wire? I do realize how fiddly that kind of thing can be tho.
Still a fricken awesome conversion

Thanks man, and yea i originally tried to do it with pin, the same pins i use to...well pin. That was a chore, and i did not work. Im going to see how well i can manipulate some of my larger gauges though.
Oh also forgot to ask. Do the dents that i put in the tanks on his back look realistic?

Loving your concept for the Inquisitor Lord, the armor looks like it's going to be awesome. Also, the dude with the flame staff reminds me very much of an Arbites.... I think it's the armor and the way the head is build but it looks damn good!
27177
Post by: brush_slip
Dude funny that you posted an ork burna conversion, that was the first concept, was using one of the burnas, its just too large for a cadian sized model. I was going to make a smaller version but i wanted to keep the sinister flamer pole idea incorporated.
22687
Post by: MajorTom11
Flamer pole definitely missing something, if I were you, I'd play around with your plasticard/rods/tubs and keep bulking it out. When you get the overall sillouette right, gs on some diles, wrap some wire around it, and you are good!
Probably easiest to find a reference for a 'techno staff' type thing from a videogame, movie or comic, and use that as a starting point.
The head I think could use a little something extra too, to make it unique as the model deserves to be. I think something small that breaks the face/visor/forehead sculpt up would really individualize it.
Overall looks awesome though!
27177
Post by: brush_slip
I do want to add more cables and stuff, i just dont want to overdo it. Ill also try to make a housing out of plasticard to give it more bulky-ness and i want to add some little do dads to the entire model to make it look like he has done his fair share of travelling. The head, YES, definitely needs something to pull it together more. The helmet just kind of fades into the model as a whole.
22687
Post by: MajorTom11
Sounds good! The pole of the flamer, it's just that that one rod just ends for no apparent reason or function. That, and it could definitely use some banding etc to make it look 'put together' so to speak.
I don't think the answer is to make it huge or make it non-pole like, but I do think it needs a lot of texture in that area to re-enforce it's function

Post by: brush_slip
Haha the flames coming out the top would be cool, its just been done so many times. i do need to make that second pole functional. I wanted it to give almost an exhaust look, but i realized if it was an exhaust system, the wielder would be burnt by the after burners.
I cant wait to get painting, I just have to make sure that the model is fully completed. As well i have to also work on the other models. I wont start painting until i at least get the second one and the lord started, as well as get the kinks worked out of the death watch model and finish him up.

So i did a little work and i want to know if it helped at all. i decided to go with attention to detail to spruce it up. I have put on another gas line and a wing nut valve regulator out of etched brass as well as some mounting brackets. Dont worry the top of the flamer isnt crooked I checked, im not sure what that is. Oh and i also added a heat gauge on there that i will paint to show detail. That is what the little round thing is.
Here it is.

I like the etched brass bits, they add a lot of detail..I just don't know if they add any weight to the flamer.
TBH it might be time to put him aside, concentrate on some of your other models and come back to him with a fresh eye.
Whenever I am working to a deadline I find I can become stuck on a detail and then have to rush to finish.
Just my two cents, I still think it looks great

Not much here, just thought i would add a little color to this blog. Just a base concept. Im not going to use this one, it is a mock up to see how well MIG pigments would make rust on a much smaller scale. I wanted it to look like old rundown rustic stairs, which will be the idea for the squad. I have the rust kind of discoloring the steps as well, much like how it would almost rub off on things in real life. I tried to keep the colors of the step lighter and cooler, considering the squad will be in dark tints and warmer colors.
These steps were made using my cork and sand style. With a little plasticard to add the more mechanical riveted support.
Let me know what you think of this idea.

He was good, it's him himself who deals with the orders, sent them out pretty quick, but not lightning fast. Took a week or 2 as I recall. Well worth it though, LOTS of pigment per pot.

That would work perfectly, considering my personal deadline for the modeling is two weeks. Oh and i have decided to go with Iquisitor Rex from Forgeworld. Maybe a little converting but nothing super outrageous. i think his detailed armor will fit very well with the squad. Only problem is that he is in terminator armor which means he will be the size of the space marine. You know on second thought, maybe i wont. haha, yea that was a very quick change of mind. So here is something ive been fiddiling with while i await my supplies. I picked this up in hopes of doing a huge warm color to cool color contrast. I experimented with the skin tones and the robes. The washes in the skintones are all cool colors and the robes are all done using earthy colors and warm colors. Thus far im pretty pleased. The contrast added by the gold NMM worked out pretty well also. This is me advancing my basic technique of NMM to a little more blending and highlighting. Hope you guys like it and i promise more to come with the Inquisitor i just need something to do while i wait.
Im not happy with the skin just yet. I think it looks okay just not the quality i was going for. As well i will be doing the washing technique for the Inquisitor and retinue on top of my usual layered highlights.

I like the contrast you've built up. The warm robes bring the warmer tones in the skin out, gives it a lot more depth.

Here is another one of the relic guys. I really enjoy this one and it is a popular mini to paint. Im doing a lot of experimenting on the others of the regiment besides the holders of the relic. here i went for a very sinister and dark skin tone using cool colors again. I based it in a brown and purple mix working reds and blues into the highlight colors. I think it turned out pretty well. Its not the normal flesh tone, its more worn and battle hardened.
I want to go back and wash the bruises more to blend them into the skin. Right now you can basically see the color transition and i dont want that.
Sorry about the bad pics. Automatically Appended Next Post: HUGE problem occurred today. Lets just say im starting from scratch again on the missionaries and the sages, because i used the wrong kind of primer. NEVER i repeat NEVER use GW primer on something you have been working on for a while. HOLY crap did it screw up my model. I mean it fuzzied and cracked and just blew that thing out of the water. I tried to get it off but the model of course just broke apart, due to its fragility. Im so mad that i could just cry, all that work and now its gone. There is no way of resurrecting it i tried. Any ideas on how i should go about this next attempt?

Not a problem man, I could make a quick tutorial when i get to painting the next one. No biggy. Plus who knows if i will even make it to GD this year. Unfortunately with my new job i may be working 6-7 days a week for a couple of months. A job is more important, this way i can buy more warhammer. Anywho, ill have to see how this new production goes. I mean at work. If we land a big job then they want parts out fast, which means more hours to work to get them out. Its a shame, but its got to be done.

haha, yea for the most part, unless were fighting. But yea, either way im going to make the inquisitor and retinue. I dont care how long it takes. Golden Demon may be big and make me a serious artist if i won, but I think it will be okay to just paint for the fun instead.

really like that flamer, and the models

thanks guys, unfortunately the flamer guy is a casualty of GW spray paint. I could have shed a tear about him. Even if i decided not to use him in the squad i worked my ass off on him. But yea now im forced to start a new. At least on the heirophants.

Simple green!
There is still a chance to save it!
That sucks BALLS. I have been a victim of GW powdered spray too... Console yourself that at least it was primer and not sealer!
Try stripping, hope it works out man :S

That really sucks about the flamer guy, he was looking sweet.

No worries on the flamer. I will redo him. I mean honestly everything that i try to do again never looks as good, but im pretty sure i can get a good new flamer, as long as i stick to the original concept. Plus i will be able to kink a few flaws that i noticed previously on the first one. I see it as an opportunity to perfect. I let go of the fact that i ruined the first one. Things happen, its okay now.

Yea, I tried the simple green. Unfortunately the GS didnt hold up. And the bitz that i added were too thin or fragile to hold up as well. So looks like i will have to start from ground zero again. Which as I said isnt so bad. Major Tom I would have gladly given it to you if i knew that no matter what i would mess it up. lol. Yea I need to find a better primer. Maybe I could get some advice on this subject. Tonight I may have some updates on other projects. Still waiting for bitz from warstore. Hopefully they come soon!

pm me if it's not on this thread, look forward to seeing them!
Shame about the model, it was great work... Good to know about simple green and GS though!
I have read several recommendations from people regarding sprays in various threads here, most seem to indicate krylon sprays are good. auto body and rustoleum is also pretty awesome. I used auto spray for white a while back, worked fine, left a slightly thicker coat but not enough to obscure detail.
The biggest thing to watch out for is humidity. If there is humidy, watervapor is caught in the nebulized paint, and it ruins the surface tension of the paint as it hits, creating the pocked rough surgace. I don't know about you,but it's been muggy as hell up here lately. The way around it? turn on the heaters in your garage, or AC if its there. Could also put a dehumidifier in there. Best idea though is to just keep track of the humidity and wait for a really dry day.
Sucks dude... but then again, iterating is rarely a bad thing, especially for this kind of work, which isnt like say impressionism or abstract painting where sometimes its just about the moment and a one of a kind brush stroke, this stuff is about skill, patience and steady hands!
Oh ya, and time... lots and lots of time lol

So considering that i will not be able to make it to GD this year. Which is rather depressing i finally opened one of my Leman Russ for the DKOK army, and i come to find it is severely warped and i mean just destroyed warped. Should I call GW cause this thing has been sitting a while, and i have had the bad luck of calling them once before. Would it even matter. I mean either way this thing WONT go together. Im so frustrated it may be the first one ive walked away from in a long time. What should i do...
And dont worry i have some updates for tomorrow on the Inquisitor and retinue, You will all like i Hope. God i love DH they have just so much possibilities with converting. Anyway, just a random post here but any type of feedback would help.

I got a bunch of old GW box sets from my FLGS that ended up missing bits. That last one was really bad, but GW was very generous about it. I was surprised. Give them a call and see what they can do, I say. But if they ask if it's been sitting in the sun for three months, be honest.

if you are missing parts or got misscasts, you get your product replaced wherever you bought it.
even if its a non-gw store they take it back, give you a new one and they get a new one from gw(they can even keep the one you gave back).

Some what of an update on the would be golden demon entry. I started a new missionary, after losing all motivation from the casualty i suffered on the last one. But i am coming along quite nicely with the Deathwatch true scale space marine.
I have a pic for the scale reference, he is big, big as in TRUE scale man.
The right hip will be remodelled. It looks very very strange. Too far out i would say.

Thanks guys, yea i wanted the big look to him, without the super bulky-ness. I really tried to get a good pose, not dramatic, but more the calm before the storm pose. The whole squad will hopefully have this, if all goes well.

Looking good Brushy, pray to the primer gods for these!
Only crit, the hips are way out of wack on the marine, they are to the sides of the crotch area when they really should be under it. Don't know if it's a wip thing but the legs are way too wide apart atm.
btw, the plasti-armor is coming along beautifully!

This continues to be excellent inspiring stuff. I've found fw customer service to be exemplary about replacing parts. Also, try soaking the russ in boiling water and then use G clamps (proper big 'uns from a hardware store) to hold it roughly in shape. I used this to salvage a centaur from a red shirt that was deemed unsaveable.

Your avatar pic is bad.
A final update of the OP's entry would not go wrong here.
We have seen only a small proportion of the GD entries, and this year was more controversial than last.

Unfortunately I did not make it to GD this year. So no no more updates. The project is still in the works just moving much slower so its hard to make any updates. Ive gotten much more conceptual design to do. I am hoping to have quite a few entries for chicago 2011 so stay posted.
