It'd be nice for potential customers to see a complete list of brands stocked by them. That's what I was meaning.

I don't know if I am alone on this but I would never buy from a web based company who don't provide a full contact address and phone number on their site.
There isn't enough on there in terms of stock lists and pricing to get excited about either.
I wish you luck with your venture but as others have said there are things you need to do to get the customers in.

MajorTom11: Perfect thanks for the feedback this is what we need as it is our first time doing anything business like. I have noted your comments and promise that I will return with a better more excited sales pitch for all to see. Trust me no one is more excited than we are lol, we have been working hard on this all week tweakin and changing things, so think I ran out of the old steam when I posted our piss poor sales pitch as you state... All feedback on the site would be fantastic as you guys the gamers/modellers are our potentioal customers!
Also ref: fashion model sites, we only added ourselves to google yesterday so could take a while but will be there... I asked earlier for someone to explain how to place a banner on my sig in the introduce forum but no one replied - as I know this is perfect bit of advertising.
Sgt. Deadmeat: Your input has been noted and a contact address and no. will be on the site soon. Also what stock would you like - as stated before we are listing constantly and GW will be added imminently.

First I wish you guys best of luck!
Now If I may, here are some pointers you could consider for your store.
From a heavy internet shopper point of view, I'm covered hobby wise. As you know there are already sucessfull stores outhere for the hobby and my question is what do you have that others dont have? Its a rethoric question.
Since you are starting up you need something tasty to catch my business, that could be good discounts, free and fast shipping, good client service, popular ranges and also stuff that its hard to find...
As a European customer I'm covered with Maelstrom, Wayland games, Antenocitti but sometimes I go US, Hong kong or even Australia to catch those hard to find tasty products... so check those stores and see the prices and outstanding costumer service.
Another sugestion is to develop exclusive stuff like bases or basing convo kits etc thats always a good lure for me.

Thanks for the reply. I am glad you are putting up contact info as a company without them looks like they don't want customers to know where they are.
I should have been clearer about the point I made about stock. It's not a case of there being a particular line I want (as I buy mainly GW but I am interested in other stuff too) but more to do with the fact we cannot compare you to your competitors until you have a more complete listing. It's a bit like walking into a new shop and finding most of the shelves empty.
Having compared the price of Army Painter stuff against other retailers, you do appear to offer good value but I didn't get as far as checking the postage prices. I think, like many here, I am keen to see how your main figure ranges are priced.
29213
Post by: modelling-mayhem
We are charging exactly what it costs to dispatch customers orders. We make no profit from the postage charge. We use courier and the rates vary for different options i.e next working day delivery for items 0-5kg in weight is £6. This makes your bargain order stay a bargain order instead of like other retailers who charge high shipping rates.

Hi,
Well, I'm excited about the possiblity of another web-based UK retailer, with some caveats. What will give you an advantage is customer service and ensuring that you have the product in stock at point of order. I'm really pleased to see you're stocking battlefoam and take paypal, both good. Be careful which shipping agent you're using: you want one that will do "leave in a safe place" so folk aren't having to tramp to depots (there's one that leaves stuff in the garden shed - or in our case the playhouse - which is most helpful!)
I feel you're limiting your appeal by not stocking Wyrd, Cipher, and above all Privateer Press. I know that there are some distributor-level problems with these, but the point stands. You could also try to single yourselves out from the crowd by stocking stuff that is otherwise quite tricky, eg: Ron&Bones, which is an awesome pirate miniature game (straight away, you have a market) which IIRC doesn't have a UK distributor; or cosying up to Spartan, who are very nice chaps and have great stuff coming out.
There are enough bits stores, imo, and you don't want to dilute your business model. Having said that, a sprue service would be really quite interesting, as again it gives you a niche. Think competitive edge!
Also, be careful with UM, for what it's worth. They are a little... unreliable. Nice guys and all, but, somewhat chaotic.
Just my thoughts - take or leave as desired!

I am also curious as to you rates for shipping to europe (Netherlands specifically). if you are a bit cheaper or provide better service then mealstrom (yes I had some minor gripes) then maybe I will switch.
Only extra demand I have of an online retailer that sells multiple lines is that 1 of the lines has to be privateer Press stuff...
I am also looking at a nice cheap source to get some confrontation plastics, but that is more to see how they look and if I can use them for my armies...
Good luck with the startup business

We are overjoyed that we are able to offer battlefoam and as far as paypal is concerned most people prefer using paypal as a secure payment choice - I know I do, hence why we chose them. We will also add other pay options like google checkout too.
Wyrd are a range that will be listed soon we have contacted a fair few places and manufacturers and will be listing all of these real soon. Your other suggestions has been noted and we will see what we can do to bring the brands and ranges you mentioned to the table.
Our courier will leave item in safe place providing you inform sales team at checkout process with the additional note for where you want the item left.
We will have promotions and discounts running on the store regularly - such as free items with orders over X amount of £s and free shipping on orders over X amount aswell - and you will always find a bargain.
We offer excellent prices where possible to the point of if you find something cheaper than we have listed it then if possible we will try our damn hardest to make sure we can be cheaper. This will be covered on our price match promise section being typed up as we speak.
And we arent stopping there...
Regards Automatically Appended Next Post: We have placed our first offer up on our site - its a offer on Mantic Games Range...
Spend £50* or more on mantic stuff and we will throw in a free Mantic bag worth £18... Spend £100 or more and we will give away free Mantic bag, Journal and free shipping... Dont miss this offer now - Only available on orders made between now and 31st May 2010. *not inc. shipping.

I have a few questions.
I live on the Aland Islands which is part of Finland. The Aland Islands are NOT part of the EU-Tax Union though.
What this means is that everything imported here you have to pay 22% tax on. Games Workshop offer tax free sales here, will you be doing the same?
I have been in contact with pretty much every webstore out there trying to find one in the uk that offer tax free export here.
So first question, do you offer tax free export to EU none tax-union members?
Second question is regarding shipping costs, you say your shipping is what it costs you to ship the stuff.
I was unable to select any other country than the UK but the shipping was 6£ none the less.
Does anyone know their discount % on GW stuff?
Basically because of the tax union thing all my orders have to be worth less than 45€, if its more I have to pay 22% import tax on it.
I dont know but I think most orders from webshops are less than 50-100£ in value. How will you compare to say Maelstrom?
I did a simple test to compare your shop with theirs.
If I buy 30 Vallejo model air from you it costs me 48£, from Maelstrom 49,80£. Any less than that and Maelstrom is the cheaper store.
Problem is that´s past the 45€ limit for me.
I havent compared anything else, your prices are nice but for me who can only buy multiple smaller orders Maelstrom is the cheaper option.
The ideal godly store for me would be 20% off GW RRP, free shipping and tax free export to none tax union members. Im sure allot of people would love a store like this, there used to be one but they stopped shipping outside of the UK last year.
I guess you have to vaguer profit margins. I cant remember the name of the store any more but they had free shipping on all order over 15£.
Most webshops have something unique they try to offer.
Miniwargaming has 10% off GW RRP and if you are a member you get another 10% off but membership costs 20$ or so a month. You also get some free stuff if you are a member. Paints, brushes, magnets etc.
They also make videos and tutorials etc.
Maelstrom offers 10-15% off with FREE SHIPPING worldwide.
What will you guys offer than noone else can provide?
What niche will you have?
All I can say is good luck.

Post by: modelling-mayhem
Well hi there MadCowCrazy,
First off you have some fantastic questions to ask, and secondly sorry for not getting back to you sooner than 1 day later!
Now onto the important part of this post. As far as Tax Free Export is concerned we have someone looking into this right now and I will inform you of what they come up with shortly.
Shipping: We have been adding different postage option's over the past day, and now offer Royal mail 1st and 2nd class postage as an option as well as courier for the more impatient people who need their goods pronto - like myself . However that said this is still at this present moment in time still limited to the UK only - this will change from Monday 31/05/2010 though.
Our discount on GW products comes out to around 12-15% off RRP.
Having looked into your comparison purchases from both us and maelstrom, we have now hopefully matched if not made cheaper the final cost for you by adding cheaper postage means. However one thing I will state is Maelstrom offer free Second Class Postage only - Which can take upto 8 working days and this is only available on orders above £10. Their more speedier options i.e First Class and Special Delivery Next Day are not FREE of delivery carriage charges. Where as Modelling-Mayhem offers FREE of charge carriage on orders over £50 and also provides First Class and Next Day delivery options cheaper than Maelstrom do!
Regarding free stuff, we also offer random daily, weekly, month long deals where people get some goodies thrown in with orders and this will be listed on the items offering such goodness.
All that is left for me to type to you at this moment in time now is regarding your question on what we offer...
As stated before we offer a speedy cost friendly delivery option. Fast and pleasant customer service. We offer you the products you want when you want them at a more cost friendly price - we have the proof in black and white for many of our items listed - just check our prices out on the webstore. We will do as much as we can to get you the brands or products you want - to the point if there is something that isnt listed on our site email us and we will do our upmost best to get these for you. Offers will be in place regularly its just a case of checking our webstore out. Shipping will stand FOC on orders above £50 - this will be on the fastest delivery option and not just the cheapest. We also offer some unique hard to get products such as Battlefoam and Boltaction mini's as well as massive discounted prices on other brands like Army Painter and Vallejo - check these out they are fantastic brands at a fantastic rate.
We know it is going to be hard coming into a market with big hitters already on the field, but we are prepared for this challenge as we know we can bring most of the products out there at more affordable prices. Of course we need to make money to do this but we will say we are not here to make mega pounds, we are here to help you save mega pounds.
A wall of text is here by built here to give you the info you need!! Hopefully it helped.
Regards
Tim Hart

Its looking promising I must say.
One idea though, what about people who are not in a real hurry to get their stuff?
Im the type of person who makes smaller orders all the time rather than huge ones once a month (this is mainly doe to the import tax thing). I usually have about 1-3 packets a week arriving so Im always busy with something.
Tbh I wouldnt mind if shipping was 2-3weeks as long as it was free (this is also doe to me making allot of smaller orders all the time). Before I found maelstrom postage costs used to be about 30% of my budget.
Free shipping on orders over 50£ is ok, but I wouldnt mind seeing it on orders around 35£ as well but with slower shipping times.
Will you be having some type of faithful points for people who buy often? I know of many sites who give you 100points for buying for 10£ and the points are worth 1pence/cent or whatever currency they use.
Will you have something similar?
Something I would really like to see at a miniature gaming store would be resin and silicone/latex casting and mould making materials.
I have seen more and more people starting to make their own resin bases for their models or copying plasticard swords/weapons they have made to outfit their armies. Is this something you have considered?
Im going to be keeping an eye on your store to see how it develops.

Hi,
OK so after a long thinking session, we have changed our free shipping rate from £50 to £35 orders. This will be shipped by Courier or Royal Mail, depending on how fast the customer wants their order.
A points scheme for returning customers is also something we are looking into at the moment and again will list details soon.
As far as mould making and resin casting etc we have contacted a distributor of some silicone and resin casting products and are at this moment in time awaiting a response. Keep your eyes to this thread to find out further progress.
Our 40k products are up live with price changes online now so head over and check them out. Our LoTR and WHFB products will be up later today also with new prices in affect.

Hello MadCowCrazy,
Hope you are well, great forum thread you have here : )
Now as for the Free shipping internationally - We have set up international shipping now and it is very very cheap, in fact so so very very cheap. We will soon offer free shipping but it will be on orders over a set amount to europe.
Tax free Imports - Im afraid like other companies we are in the same boat, and at the moment will not be offering this to our customers. As much as we would like to it isnt possible at the moment.
But instead we are offering cheap low prices so that surely makes up for the import tax : )
Sorry if this is not the answer you were hoping for : (
Regards
Tim
"But instead we are offering cheap low prices so that surely makes up for the import tax : )"
Actually it does not Im afraid.
Directly from GW Cadian Battleforce 55£
From you 47,50£
Since there is a local GW shop I can get it from there for 55£
With Import Tax :
Modelling-Mayhem 58£
With Tax free export it would be 41£ +22% = 50£
So as you can see its cheaper for me to go to the local store to buy GW stuff rather than order it online.
But with tax free export I save a little bit of money.
Basically not being part of the EU tax union really f*cks me over, pretty much all stores in sweden and finland offer tax free export here as do a few stores elsewhere but I have not been able to find a UK based GW webshop that offers it since the other one closed.
What all this means for me is that when I order from you Im going to have to make multiple orders worth no more than 37£ because if the import is worth less than 45€ I dont have to pay import tax.
So I can order pretty much anything except battleforces, but then again battleforces are always cheaper than buying the models set by set.
I dont expect the Inquisition to have any battleforces when they are released so its not a real problem.
It just means you guys are going to have to post many smaller packages rather than a big one.
29213
Post by: modelling-mayhem
Hi MadCowCrazy,
I know its not the greatest having to pay import tax!
However like you said by making smaller orders you can get around having to pay such things. Failing that you can make 1 big order from us, pay one shipping fee and then we will break the order down to less than £30 values : )
Surely this would be of benefit to you?

Hey
Awesome site you've got there, although I notice you don't appear to have Lord of the Rings stuff listed as a Games Workshop Category.
Would it be possible to include a scale within the description of suppliers? (28mm, 40mm, etc) It frustrates me when I can't tell what size a model is.
Good luck with this, I think you'll do well.
Dave Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, a 'Wargaming Store' tagline (or anything descriptive really) on your banner would be useful for telling people what happens when you click it, as currently it could just be a signiature.

we're offering free delivery on all orders in the UK from now on. Minimum order is £10.
We have a huge range of GW stock in now including the new Bblood Angels and Tyranids range as well as having a dwindling stock of Spearhead tanks still left to fly off the shelf. We will even throw in a little extra something on all our orders this week. Just to help cheer people up after a disappointing start to the England world cup campaign.

Had a look when you first posted on here and just looked again now, showing a vast improvement.
One suggestion for you though, could you put the rrp's on the product pages, it does wonders to show people just how much they're saving if they buy from you.
The free shipping over £10 deal is very good, makes you the cheaper option for small impulse orders.
Banner shows just fine, works to get to the store too.

Thanks for the kind words, and yes we finally after a few weeks of grief sorted the banner happy days!

Hey Dakka.
So we are now starting to come together and things are on the up. We have great prices, great offers and a fantastic website - if you havent checked it out then do so via our banner in sig.
Also we have a massive Imperial Guard army to start working on now in between processing the vast orders coming in. So what we thought we would do is - to keep us on track - show our customers our progress on this army via a blog, and what better way to blog than on our own site, as well as here on Dakka at some point of course too!
We will have pics up of what we have assembled and ready to paint so far, and will be open to discussions on how the army should be laid out and what should be added next etc. If your interested in this then you will be able to follow from 'possibly' later today onwards on www.modelling-mayhem.co.uk and via the best forum there is that is DakkaDakka.
For now Dakkaites stay safe.

When will you be getting MIG pigments in stock?
Are you planning to expand your range of Vallejo products as there are a number of items missing?
29213
Post by: modelling-mayhem
Hi Evilref
We are just going through our last bits now to add to the store... We are still presently adding Black Library books to the store and will be adding more MIG products by this evening... As far as Vallejo is concerned yes we still have to get products like water effects and textures uploaded and stock coded... That said what other Vallejo Products are you looking for?

Post by: Evilref
Varnishes & Mediums, liquid gold, decal fix and decal medium etc.

Post by: modelling-mayhem
Evilref we have started adding Mig Pigments now and we shall have all the Vallejo Range available by the end of the weekend.
We were aiming more to get the miniature ranges up first before we aimed at adding different paint ranges we stock, hence why we havent even added GW full range of paints and accessories etc.
All I can recommend is that you keep tabs on the site and if there is something you want to order then just use the contact us page and we will do our damned hardest to get this order built up for you

Just wondering when you might be taking in those resins and casting materials you were talking about earlier.
How about magnets, have you thought about adding some of those to your store?

One thing I noticed, is not sure that you can use GW photos and such like you have on your website. DOn't want you guys getting the ax cause of something dumb like that.

Post by: modelling-mayhem
Thanks for the heads up, however we have had close contact with GW and they have monitored the site and provided assistance and they have no issues with the pics we have displayed on site! As they are not taken from the GW website!
Thanks tho

Just a note to say that I've ordered one of the Battlefoam trays for Space Hulk. Very pleased to see that you stocked this, as it is very difficult to get hold of in the UK unless you import it directly.
Looking forward to receiving my order and good luck with the store.

Have you thought about selling different sorts of plasticard?
I've found it a right pain to try and get hold of in the UK - most sites are either overseas, or have terrible layouts/carts/etc which make it like torture to try and buy the shapes and sizes you want.
I'd love a nice clear UK store which sold different thickness, sizes, and shapes (I really want to play with some I beams, triangular support colums, etc).
If you decided you were going to stock these kinds of things, I would love you forever

Thank you from all at Modelling-Mayhem for your custom and SilverMK2 it looks like you will have to love us forever because within the next 2 days there is a huge range of new products coming to our webstore and 1 such range is plasticard

Is it just sheets, or will you be supplying some of the "scale engineering" type components - I beams, etc?

*Shakes one's virtual leg*
It will be a variety of sorts from sheets to cylinders to foamboard and all sorts, all I can suggest is keep checking the store.

Still waiting for you guys to start shipping to Canada (that small country above USA).

Post by: del'Vhar
Are shipping prices to Australia the same as the EU rates posted on the site?
Also, are you experiencing/expect to experience any stock issues similar to Maelstrom with GW products?
Not entirely sure on the details of their problems, but I think its something about GW limiting the number/size of orders they are allowed to make.
29213
Post by: modelling-mayhem
poipo32 - Shipping is available to canada! I think there was an error with the shipping option but we have now fixed these issue's.
del'Vhar - You should be able to find pricing in the shopping basket before you make your final payment. We currently don't have any stock issue's with the GW range. The only terms GW have are 1 order a week, there is no minimum or maximum amount you can order aslong as it isnt 20 rhino's in 1 order then there is no issue at all!! So I dont understand why Maelstrom have issues!!

I would love to see plasticard on your site. The sites that do sell usually only have those galeforce 9 packs with random sizes in them.
I would like to be able to buy 5-10x of the same sheet size and also rods, T, H, L sections etc as well. I dont want to have to buy a pack with 1 of each because that just leaves me with allot of product I cant use.
Its impossible to get ahold of plasticard here where I live. I would have to travel to sweden and go to an RC Hobby store in stockholm to be able to buy some.

Been crazy busy here lately and we are just finding our feet again, so sorry for the slow response. Also if you have been reading the blog, it will be updated. I promise

Hi
I thought I'd give you guys a go. I normally use Wayland.
My order was 'sent to processing' on Monday (it's now Friday), how long will it be in limbo? I wanted to give said order as a present this Saturday (ie tomorrow), and will now have to make excuses, I note you say you are very busy, fine, but what is happening?

Post by: modelling-mayhem
Hi Randy,
yes we are very busy but this is not an excuse for poor service. I do apologise and will chase your order up immediately. I will get the sales team to dispatch your order via 24hr courier and will throw in a little extra something for the poor service you have received.
Please accept my apologies and if you have any further enquiries please email us.
Regards to you.

Damn, I noticed that as well. I thought 'it's probably just a server glitch or something, what could possibly go wrong?'
It's sad when that happens to a store that you saw build itself from nothing.
Does anyone know what happened?

competition probably, Wayland and Maelstrom etc are already well established, entering a crowded market is always hard, especially when you're selling the same stuff.
Sorry to hear they're having to close if that is the case and I wish them all the best in future endeavors.

So press release time it is then. As some of you may now know, Modelling-Mayhem are slowly closing down the store. We have a massive amount of GW stock in store and will be releasing it at a massive cut price in the next coming days to clear our store room. We are still desperately trying our hardest to honour orders still placed including the battlefoam orders of which were on its way to us when orders were placed. That said though our shipping supplier of battlefoam has been full of promises that the order is on its way yet we have still received nothing and no word!! We dont like letting our customers down and so far with the battlefoam orders due to our supplier being crap we have had no choice but to annoy our customers with waiting times. We will update more in the coming hours Regards all mm

It always seems like these 'too good to be true' situations pop up now and again.
Similar thing happened to 'Gorilla Tactics" a while back.
It is always best to get in quick, and early, and pay via PayPal...

yeah, a US web store about two years back that made a big splash when starting out and then failed within a few months. gorilla actually had a huge sale IIRC (black friday sale?) and failed soon after; lots of people complained for months that they weren't getting refunds on stuff bought and paid for from them. in the end, i think they made good on most of the purchases or at least gave them comparable retail value from what they had left in stock.
i'm curious to hear what happened here. if mayhem isn't interested in hashing that info out, i'd totally understand but it might help others that try the same thing in the future. is the discount model just unfeasible over 20% with GW policies? did personal issues get in the way? (don't need details there) did GW actively try to stamp them out, cancelling their account?
22802
Post by: MadCowCrazy
This sucks, I was waiting for DE and GK to get released to make some huge orders with mayhem now I will never get the chance :(
I am however intrigued by this sale you are talking about? How much -% off? If we can atleast buy the stock you have left that should help you guys right?
Kinda sucks though that Im a DH and WH collector mainly and none of those have been stocked by mayhem.
I dont collect these armies yet but if need be I could buy some necron, tau and dark eldar stuff you have lying around.

Post by: modelling-mayhem
At this time we are sat discussing the range of the sale of everything we have left in stock! Which is about £4,000 worth of GW stock and about equal Vallejo stock - which has had another store commit to buy this stock!
There are other bits and pieces up for grabs too and all will be revealed when we have time over the weekend days.
One thing we will comment on now is that its not due to GW cancelling any account or stamping out as we are still in very good standing and constantly communicating with GW over our failure! GW do offer different ranges of trade prices which in turn gives an unfair market! Because some companies have such and such and others dont! So those companies with have a higher discount rate which allows for even cheaper prices!?
There is personnal issue's involved too but we will not go into that now!! A key player in the business has left for another job so this also added stress to the workload!!!!
We had so many idea's and its a shame these will never see the light!!
It's been a pleasure chattin with you guys and it was amazing building something from nothing - Guess it was wrong time wrong place!!

I do agree it sucks GW has different discounts for different stores.
From what I heard you have to buy a min of 10 000£ worth a month just to get their 35% off and more than that for bigger discounts. If this is true that really sucks for smaller businesses who try to get into the market.
There were so many cool aspects to your webshop and it was fun being part of it from the start.
Its great you got to sell off most of your stock, atleast you dont have to worry about that anymore.
All I can say is best of luck to you guys.
