I got into a side rant with somebody on a different thread and figured I'd post this here to get others opinions. Whats your favorite RTS and why? Try not to bash my precious Starcraft too much. As you can see my favorite is Starcraft. I fell in love with it for its unique and advanced appearance (at the time) as well as the insane level of customization in the custom map creator. If it wasnt for the Starcraft 2 beta eating up time I would still be playing the custom maps on the original. I will probably go back to them while I wait for a price drop since I don't wanna buy the same game 3 times at full price. in greedy Blizzard.........*wander off cursing*

For me it's a tie between Warcraft 2 and Command and Conquer: Red Alert. Never did play Total Annihilation though I remember when it came out it was huge. I was a great fan of Starcraft too, lots of fun with the single player campaigns there.

I'm gonna go with Dark Crusade/Soulstorm. Hated how DoW2 changed the game; I'll stick to my traditional RTS games, thank you. (Granted the campaigns were still epic, though given my lack of enthusiasm for online play, not worth the 30 bucks)

I'm surprised how many people still like StarCraft, though. Compared to modern games, it is a freaking slow-paced game.

+1 for both TW and M&B:W (Though Mount and Blade is more of an RPG with RTS elements)

Also, the original Command & Conquer: Red Alert sheerly for how easy it was to modify game files to produce hilarious results. For example, making attack dogs capable of leaping across the biggest maps. Or having every type of infantry cause a nuclear explosion when they died. Godly civilians was a good one too - Civvies blowing up mammoth tanks with single pistol shots was awesome

That was a great game, I loved making little lakes with my bombs. However I got it in a pack containing; Army Men, Alpha Centauri, PanzerGeneral 2, and Metal Marines for about $24.99 so I didn't take too much care of it and I have lost it. For about 10 years now so I doubt I'll ever find it.

Warcraft 2 was a better game in my opinion. The 3D gak they tried in 3 just irritated me. Sure its lame, but I much prefer the 2D graphics to the super bright 3D stuff.

When it comes to graphics I think that Command and Conquer were the only ones to transition different styles with improvement each time.

CoH really is a classic. I've got it and all of it's expensions and I absolutely love it. The only thing I don't like about it is how prone to bugs/crashes the map editor and custom maps happen to be. I made one map that has a Nazi Precinct built into the side of a mountain in the South East, with a railyard on the South/Southwest side and a training camp on the West/Northwest side. The base perimeter is surrounded by about a Km or two deep of farms and woodlands, with a small town in the northern corner and 88/quad AA emplacements littered all over the place and placed on strategic areas of the precinct itself.

I wasn't done, however, and since installing Tales of Valor I haven't been able to work on it as the file has gone missing. Despite still being able to -play- the map. I also made another map of a city, where only the outermost edges were destroyed. The rest was pristine. I get very little (if any) lag when playing it, but after about 5 minutes it just crashes out of the blue.

Overall though, CoH is an awesome game despite these problems

But what happens when that assault fails and you have no defense when a green tide is coming at your base

Soladrin's got it. JRTS = Pure Epic Fail I'm afraid.

Hell, JRPGs are terrible enough as it is. Four things that puzzle me most about them are:

A) Why does everyone have Wings, a Tail, or Cat ears?

B) Why do JRPGs have a hard-on for WTF hair colours & styles?

C) Why do none of the Characters ever have common names? Their names sound like Frank Zappa was in charge of that area.

D) Why is there ALWAYS one Emo/Self-Pitying character?

Euuuugh... Even thinking about them gives me shivers.

No. Let's hope we never see a JRTS.

Just remember to avoid the units with the most armor in any JRTS. If it has a helmet, full body armor, a long weapon(spear, longsword), and is of normal body proportions, then it's obviously the weakest unit in the game.

Seriously, I think Japan got that backwards somehow.

I can't wait for R.U.S.E though, it looks like it may be a great game and an RTS version of Panzer General sounds good to me.

I'll admit that if they make a Naruto rts theres a 99% chance it will be horrible. I can hope for that 1% chance it would be good. Lucky for the people who don't want to see one made it's highly unlikely one would ever get created.

The ever present 1% chance that it would be good depends on how god is feeling that day, and last time I checked he doesn't like naruto.

Interesting that everyone that specified age of empires said 2 + expansion. I prefer 3 and expansions to 2, though do not mistake me for not liking AOE 2.

Empire total war is wonderful, my dutchman will kill you and then get wasted, weeded, and build more merchantmen.

I saw the words "Naruto" and "RTS" in the same sentence and my eyes started to bleed.

Just....awful. Awful.

rocklord2004 wrote:Meh. I read the manga, can't stand the anime due to the voices. If Halo can have an rts so can Naruto. If done right it would be good, unfortunately if they make one it will be dumbed down but I can still hope. :3

The difference is that Halo is a deeply fleshed-out sci-fi setting, while Naruto is a manga about ninjas with magical powers.

All you need is Age of Empires 2 and StarCraft + Brood War.

Trebuchets & Siege Tanks are fun.

I agree, I want the expansion now that I know they exist. I saw the GOTY edition and it didn't have the expansions with it, I guess they're like treasure or something.

Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising

I liked that they got rid of the base building, the combat seemed a lot more intense and quicker to get into.

And the Chaos units actually seemed evil, versus the prepubescent ones in the first

Dawn of War: Winter Assault

I can't tell you how many hours I spent sending 3 Basilisks around using the Earthshaker Round. It was awesome until it got nerfed

Starcraft: Broodwar

Need I say more?
