I too started with the current edition. I like the edition, but then again, I don't know any better. My many years of gaming on other fronts has led me find certain aspects of the 40k rules as quirky.

I started with second edition, waaay back in 1994. Needless to say, when third edition came out, I spent about a month sitting there, flipping through the pages mumbling WTF!!! WTF!!! WTF!!!. I didn't play much in the dark years of third edition. When fourth edition came out, I thought they had finally, if not gotten their heads out of their collective butts, at least made the best out of a bad situation and so I found peace with it and started playing again. Then, just when I was happy with the game, they came out with fifth edition, and I spent months looking a the news and rumour sections of Dakka and Warseer, mumbling WTF!!! WTF!!! WTF!!! all over again. I play even more now then I did ever since second edition, but that's pretty much because most of the people at my FLGS pretty much ignore the more odious elements of the new rules like true line of sight and wound allocation. I live in fear of what they may do with sixth edition...............

I had been introduced to 40k prior to 3rd ed by a friend who had a few armies.
Although I was interested at the time,I didn't have a great deal of disposable income, so begged off on becoming involved in the game.
When 3rd ed was released a buddy of mine bought Two of the boxed starter sets and gave me all of the Dark Eldar,so he would have someone to learn how to play against.
I bought a few Raiders & Ravengers,an HQ and some incubbi, plus a couple of wytch sqauds and got hooked through the gills.
I've been involved in 40k ever since.

Bought my first "Space Orks" and "Star Soldiers" in the blue blister packs before the rules even came out just cuz they looked "cool".
Then RT came out, my gaming group all got hooked, and the rest is history.

I truly started with 5th ed. I "played" 1 4th ed game but it was me moving the pieces and rolling dice with somebody else telling me what to do. No clue what I was doing so I don't count that as starting since I never bought any pieces. I've now got 5 armies and can beat Barlio's Salamanders.

Rogue Trader, back in the day - through to 2nd ed, took a break then came back with the start of 3rd ed.
When Land Raiders were 2 to a box.
When Rhinos were 3 to a box.
When SM were 30 to a box.
When SM had jetbikes (but everyone could take land raiders).

I played about 2 games of rogue trader, before my friends and I saved up and bought the 2nd edition boxed game. I think codex space wolves was out when we did, so I dont' think I started when rogue trader was the only thing around, i think one or two of my friends just had the book, and some minatures. I distinctly remember the terminators having a 2+ modifiable save in RT, then in 2nd ed. they had a 3+ modifiable save, on 2d6!
Had a lot of fun with second ed. then I went to college, never played 3rd ed. Started again with some new friends many years later on 4th ed. And the rest is history! Been a great game the whole time if you asked me. Although, it felt like more of a customizable game back in 2nd ed. But it just took FOREVER to play!

I started in 1991. I remember carrying around a plastic tub with all the rules photo copied and bound with yarn. i think the stack of papers stood about 18 inches high. Back then you had to make your own vehicles if you wanted any, otherwise it was all foot troops. I remember even making robots that you needed to set up a program before the game that they had to then follow. Having to roll after you hit something to see where you hit then how bad it was was fun. Like, did i hit the model in the head, chest, leg, hand? Or did i hit his bike? where on the bike? grenades actually were thrown and limited on how many you had. there were gas grenades, nerve grenades, etc. Yay for being overly complex

RT - the best and the most disorganised! (although sometimes I think not alot has changed )
It was a case of you got out what you put in; and for anything more than a straightforward head to head between friends really benefitted from a GM.

No true line of sight made the game a fancy board game in my opinion. Now that true line of sight is in both games, I am totally sold. Great system with fantastic minis. The game is really the best there is and any problems with the system are minor from where I stand. I just wish I had more time to play.

Bought the box set the day it came out - had been playing Fantasy prior to that, but had no interest in 2nd ed 40k. Watching those games, it all seemed to come down to whose ridiculous character did what to the other guy's character. And the H2H system! Emperor, what a abortion that was!
When I heard 3rd ed was coming out, I figured I'd give it a shot. I did like 3rd ed, until BA - my god, that codex owned so much face. Regular Rhino Rush was ok, but BA Rhino Rush was just broken...
Lots to miss about 3rd ed - WD being awesome, humongous variety of army lists, etc.

I started playing heavily in the 2nd edition years, played a huge amout of 3rd edition until Chaos became laughable losers, mostly skipped 4th edition but kept on collecting models and have been hard core into it again since the 5th ed rules hit the shelf!
Rogue Trader models will still readily available when I first started but sadly land raiders were quite sold out in my area!
My first land raider was the very 1st MKII LR available in my area! It was a pre pre order model that came as part of a $300ish space marine battle force box! oh the memories!
I still remeber being super stoked when The *dark millenium* box set came out lol! I'm just happy the game is a lot cleaner now and I don't need to carry around 100's of wargear/psychic power cards or turning templates *vomit*

It would be annoying when they make new editions (I haven't experienced one yet) because you memorise the new rules, you get the (horribly expensive) new books and all the new dudes then GW just goes "New edition" and all of your work is destroyed. On the other hand, new editions mean that they (probably) make the rules better/fairer Automatically Appended Next Post: sennacherib wrote:Rouge trader baby. Bring back the Zoats.

Started with RT, dropped out for quite a few years and now on the 5th ed. This is much better in terms of game play (ah the fond memories of using RT rules to work out vehicle acceleration, deceleration, turn ratio radius! No wonder games took so bl**dy long!) They've obviously updated it so it's easier to spend more money on - oh I mean easily use vehicles etc. Could still do with a few tweeks though, and I think my CSM codex could certainly be better.

Rogue Trader for me. Still remember my Psyker using lvl 4 telekinesis to drop a dreadnought on a Marine Lieutenants head!
Drifted away from 40k in the early days of 3rd. My gaming chap's now tempting me back (with the promise that he'll start playing Epic!)

The very end of 3rd edition, I bought our gaming group's copy of the 4th edition rule book when it was released shortly after we started. Drifted away for a bit, but our group got back into it after 5th edition was released.

Well, I barely play it and collect the models mostly. I do have a rather large collection of the things, but they're spread out over different races and I've yet to build a proper 'all-comers' army.
But 5th, even though I have 4th rulebook about somewhere.

2nd edition, with the Angels of Death codex and a Blood Angels starter set. I like the streamlining of the current game but I miss being able to drive a tank around firing all of it's guns, I miss the psychic rules, and most of all I miss the strategy cards from Dark Millenium (we still use them often at home)

I like 40k, so don't view this as a rant or anything. But really, the only reason I got into it is because at my gaming club only ONE other person (out of about 20) wanted to play fantasy regularly. Everyone else did 40k. So I took it up to get some variety... you can only fight lizardmen so many times before it gets a bit dull...

Ha ha! Until you mentioned it, I had forgotten all about the awfulness that was 'following fire'.

Some of the most fun I ever had was with 2nd Edition in High School. Back when my uber Lord charged through Overwatching terminators to use his needle pistol before throwing his vortex grenade (which then swallowed him whole in the following turn).

My first minis were from pre 2nd edition but I didn't so much as play as pretend to play until the 2nd edition boxed game came out and my brother and I finally got the rules.
I remember being upset when 3rd because my awesome librarians were not nearly as cool anymore and grenades were now lame.

My history with 40k is very spotty.
Technically my induction was circa '98. No rule books and only the vaguest idea of what I was getting into. I bought a box of Eldar Guardians because they "looked cool" (oh, if only I knew then what I know now). I assembled two models and painted them both vastly different. I was very proud of myself, and then found out that what I bought was in no way shape or form an army. No one else was down for buying any either, so those poor fellas made their way into the closet and never came out (in the closet forever. The Eldar way, it seems )
My real intro was 4th ed, with only the core rulebook. I read that thing cover to cover I don't know how many times. I was interested in the modelling aspect, but couldn't work up the nerve to buy anything.
Then me and a friend got together and talked about how cool it would be to play. We had played everything else under the sun (we're talking 20 year rpg vets, here). So we decided that being adults with jobs and whatnot we had earned the right to squander large sums of money on little plastic mans. I bought a copy of 5th ed. and two tau battleforces. He bought AoBR for him and his stepson, and he went SM.
It was a rough six months. Then I learned of Kharn the Betrayer.
I bought a CSM codex, a battleforce, A termie lord, a box of termies and never looked back. Even sold the tau to feed the beast.
So I say 4th ed. Memorizing the entire core rulebook has to account for something, but 5th ed taught me three important rules.
These are the rules, carry them with you, always.
1- Read the codex before any purchases.
2- Rely not on the battleforce alone.
3- Sucker a friend into the hobby.
I'm also mildly furious with myself every passing day for not buying the newest edition of Space Hulk when I had the chance.

My favourite was always skirmish advancement Rogue Trader of ye olde days. 2nd edition had fun stuff, and 3rd cut me out of the game.
4th edition has been my preferred, 5th eating TLoS and the heart being torn out of Chaos and Sisters really turned me off. The Sisters Codex was what made me actually jump ship to other systems, as despite my RAWR HATE 5th it didn't make me stop really, especially with players at the oxford street GW being cool with 4th ed play. But yeah... at least my Bertha Jacobus looked good before I turned to Malifaux =3

Started on 2nd edition, played that for a bit then ended up taking a long break. I got back in to it right as 4th was about to be released. I read on another post that the card dred in the 2nd edition box is still tourny legal....thats nuts! lol. I would love to see that on a board.

I forgot about grenades in 2nd edition! They were ridiculous! Grenade spam

I started with 3rd ed, over ten years ago :| I was too young to really understand the game back then so I just had fun with my UM and complained that the DE had boobs (I was ten-ish, girls were icky). When 4th ed came out I really got into it though, that was when I was in my heyday.
Then I discovered women... So I've just gotten back into it now, at the arse end of 5th, so I'm not even bothering to learn these rules, just wait for 6th and hope they don't ruin it.
