I started sm because my brother gave me his army.It was in a trash bag filled with goat poop and straw, and it had been sitting in our barn for 5 years. Most of the terminators and space marines survived but the land raider, rhinos, vindicator, predator, bikes and speeders were all smashed and i could only find a few peices of most of them.

I got into IG because of a particularly traumatic incident involving crisis suits back when I was an eldar player. I wanted something that was able to kill units behind cover, and I heard of the basilisk...
When I eventually got back into 40k, I picked guard, and a basilisk was my first purchase after a box of troops.

The bg and the following quotes from the Squat 'codex', copied from the Lexicanum...
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!
You people do well at war because you treat it as a religion. We do well because we treat it as a business. It is just a matter of outlook.
On one side of me stand my Homeworld, Stronghold and Brotherhood; On the other, my ancestors. I cannot behave otherwise than honourably.
How Jervis can say they ( GW) did this race a disservice is beyond me. (to me) The above is plenty to inspire a theme for the force.

It was a stroke of pure luck that the two armies that came with the set are both armies I like. General aesthetics of the models.
I won't field an army of "ugly" models - so I'll never play tyranids, chaos or DE (in their current range).
Power level of the army is irrelevant - I play DH (no allies and never have), so it's not about the winning.

I find one of the biggest draws to me is playstyle: How does an army function on the tabletop, what are its specific strengths and weaknesses? I try to choose armies that will play differently than the ones I have or than the more common ones in my group (mostly a Fantasy player though, so more radical differences).
Aside from this, the minis make a huge impact. I wouldn't collect an army I couldn't stand the look of, or one that I would never be able to customize to some extent.

When I first decided I was going to play 40k, I initially told myself I wasn't going to play Space Marines or anything other army that was too popular. I didn't like the idea of showing up with the same army as everyone else.
I was originally going to play Nids, but as I browsed through the codexes I got drawn into IG. I spent probably two weeks tweaking a list to start going shopping, and it was going to be like 500-600 dollars for a 2000 point list, and I didn't even know if I was going to enjoy the game!
I went into the local game shop during their 40k and learned two things. One, IG was what about half of the players were using! Secondly, they were going to start a 750 escalation league in a couple of weeks. I was also told Space Marines were the best way to go, and I could always switch armies later.
I dwelled on it and told myself I needed to make sure I was going to like any of the armies. Got my hands on the Blood Angels Codex, and liked what I saw. I still am nothing but very new at the game, but I figured I knew enough and got a 750 point army for about 150 dollars through the Battleforce, an HQ, and a Baal Predator... and I've been adding on from there.
I have went back to the IG book and a couple of others since then, but I think I am going to stay with the BAs.
Besides, with Space Marines I can always paint them a different color if they don't work out!

Hi
For WFB - the look and feel of Undead drew me in. I now sit at 6K of Vampires and 5K of Tomb Kings, without sharing any skeletons.
For 40K - the look of Orks drew me in, although Tyranids were a close second. At the time, bugs did not have a 3rd ed codex, so the orks won the day.
For War Machine and Hordes - the look of Skorne won the day. The fluff has kept me interested, despite almost no play at my FLGS.
For every specialist game and other range/game I have tried - the look of the army is #1.
Cheers,
Carlos the Craven

I have 3 armies, Chaos (ugly stuff, due to the former owners bad painting skills) Necrons (which, along with Chaos I bought 1500- 2000 points second hand, so the army doesn't feel very personal) The army I own as my primary army is my Guard. I built it up from Yarrick and 2 squads for guardsmen, after selling my former guard (including my first painted models) to buy the 'crons. Luckly, my friend was more than happy to swap the guardsman back, and since then, my army has only grown.
It now has russes, Manticore, commissars, and a Baneblade. It really is an army i'm proud of, and I (in a way) love it, because it was my first army. I started it again, for those that are interested, because 'crons were boring, died without 'litthy and Guard are far more fun toplay and model. All the men that I painted are individuals, rather than just mass meat. Sadly, most were painted for a 40k presentation (live battle to miss lessons) we had to make to new kids, and have lost thier identity. I'm gonna need a lot of paint in the summer...

I got Maccrage first off, I liked the game so I decided I'd get an army.
I was told of the general fluff of every army and decided to go with chaos, so I got the Chaos Codex and started reading. I came back to the store knowing the truth about the Corpse God and was set not to follow him. But I didn't really like the feel of super strong power armoured folks and rather liked the feel of an IG army.
Back then LatD were legal to play and the Redshirt I talked with handed me the stores' copy of Codex: Eye of Terror I started reading and BAM that was dead on what I was looking for in my army. I headed home and started reading about conversions and fluff of chaos scum (You know when GW had a site that was more than a shop). I was set, I downloaded the LatD army list (and every single army list for free download!) and designed a 500 point force.
I liked the idea of having to modify every single model to be more chaos enligned that's what really hooked me up with Warhammer 40k, conversions.

My heart is in Bretonnia, but they too need a need a new codex. Love 8th and hope the Brets can make a come back. Tau rocks, but 5th hurt them too much to play them until, that's right, new codex needed. I miss the power of the Fish of Fury. Orcs and Goblins rock, don't care they are not in the big league, just love the minis and the rules rock! Finally, Grey Knights, with the new codex on the rumor horizon, wow I can't wait to build on my little 3K army.

That's because they're the most "human" of all factions. I always root for humans in any scifi or fantasy game. I always for example, choose human as my race in MMORPGs and the like and cheer on for the humans even if they're the evil ones in the story.

: The Space Marines were the first models i ever bought and learnt to paint on, i left warhammer for about 1 1/2 years and came back to it once i saw some black templars on display outside a local GW. I was attracted to the Black Templar's mainly for the background and the look and feel of the models. They are very Gothic but are not chaos and best resemble Knights of the Crusades in Jerusalem.
The Space wolves where my next step. Given that they wore power armor smiler to what i was use to is what drew my attention for my second army. I wasn't looking for a bright, or plain looking force i was looking for something that stood out, was different but familiar and thats where the Space wolves stood. I have always like the Celtic look of the Wolves and their wolf like nature was deferent and very interesting to learn about.
My Elysian Droop troops are really just a side project, Something fun to keep me from getting to buried into SM. I am Fascinated with WW2 and with the Airborne Soldiers that fought during the war. I guess that is where my fondness for them comes from.

Combination of background and models.
I mean the old Space Wolves codex had a screaming ginger guy with a massive axe on the front, whats not to love?
As for my Witch Hunters, well I always loved the idea of the old school mob in films so a well equipped version of them seemed the way to go.

Each of my armies drew me in with the culture and background. Orks were just fun. No anger, no hatred, just pure whoopin' and hollerin' dakka dakka go fasta attitude and completely oblivious to tomorrow or getting blown up or crushed or thinking about why trying to jump a bike off the top of a Gargant is a bad idea.
Chaos was the personification of pure anger and hatred. Omnipotent and omnipresent, the simplicity of this common thread was beautiful. They hate the Imperium. They hate the Xenos. Depending on the chapter they even hate themselves. Winning against Imperial forces is the most satisfying feeling when I play Chaos.
And finally my Genestealer Cult. Apparently not popular enough to make money for GW it into the newer editions as a supported army, my memories go back to 2nd ed. Very rich in background and purpose, the most versatile army I ever played, and easily the most devastating. The convoluted machinations of the Magus and Patriarch manipulating the local population, corrupting each generation and bending them to their will, completely unaware that they were merely pawns of the Hive Mind.
I've played other armies but those are the three that I'll always go back to.

It was mostly to tick off a friend of mine who started when I did. He plays SM and I play CSM.
Now that I look back I think that if I knew more about the 'fluff' I would still pick Chaos, love their background, the conversion possibilities and love how they look in general. That and rebelling against The False Emperor that brainwashes everyone is just alot of fun!

I voted General Background Army and Aesthetic of the Minis. I just love everything that is Ork. Their fluff is hilarious and the models are mostly really good-looking. I hardly know anything about the "general fluff" of thte 40K world but from what I've heard from my friends (who are lore geeks) the Orks seem to be the funniest race. I love my Orkses <3

Necrons, but only after having tried space marines (blood angels and Daemonhunters). The idea of an army that can keep getting shot down, and then come right back up pleases me. Normally in games I play the "good" characters, but the Necrons work for me.

I chose Tyranids because they're giant dinosaur bugs that looked really, really awesome. I also liked that they don't have all the bothersome political and philosophical issues that non-Ork 40k species tend to have. They feed. The end. And they ate the Squats.
I chose Dark Elves due to general background and aesthetics of the newer models. They have ninjas, pirates, dinosaurs, half-naked women, dragons, manticores, and hydras. How much more awesome can they get?
35176
Post by: Eura
I chose the Dark Eldar because of their maneuverability, and back when they were way out of date there was little to no whining if they won. Amassing hordes of zombies (grotesques) to make marines run like little girls is also fun.

In 40K, it was Orks, and it all had to do with someone linking me to the 1d4chan page about them. I was laughing so much that I had to get the codex, and when I read through it and realized that pretty much everything on the website was just par for the course, I had to get some. Once I got the models and really started getting into the hobby, I realized that not only are they great fluff-wise and on the table, but they've easily got the best conversion opportunities out of any army, and that's a HUGE draw for me. Literally anything can be turned into a unit for the Orks.
For my Lizardmen in Fantasy, it was the hoopla surrounding 8th edition. I was curious about getting into it, and started browsing through the army books, when suddenly: Dinosaurs. Aztec dinosaurs. Lead by Hypnotoads. Wielding intense weaponry. RIDING MORE DINOSAURS. That's all I needed to know.
Certainly helped that when I started reading more about them online I realized that not only had I picked a great-looking army, but a very good army to play with.

I read into their background, their playing style and all thoughts of playing tau were forgotten.

I chose Tau due to misinformation... kind of.
I wanted to play gunline Tau, and when I started them I thought that not only could Tau trump any other army in a shoot-off, I thought that they could get rid of the enemy before they reached Tau lines...
Bleh, I was young and stupid. I still like Tau because of the crisis suits... hopefully they will become completely OP in the new codex.

I think the main problem is the out dated codex and the fact that all the models are metal and direct order only.

I remember hearing about this hobby, and going online to check out the various types. My favorite was the sci-fi, and the top two armies I was looking at (this was still the old red bordered website) were chaos space marines and regular marines, because I really liked the idea of heavy armor, and being able to take a beating while still dishing it out. I had yet to talk with any 40k players, and I didn't even know that marines were the most common. I just liked the idea of a few models, with lots of power and durability. Then I went to the store and found out they were in the starter box! I picked up a few random on-sale boxes (a 5 man squad, a land speeder, and an attack bike), and that started my army!

I chose other, pretty much I was hooked after watching some friends play a few times and I decided to hop in. The only two armies that none of them had fielded yet were Necrons and Eldar. Since I didn't want to have the same army as anyone else, and to be honest I think Eldar look like "happy" clowns. I chose Necrons, and am more or less satisfied with the choice. I am however building an IG anda Tau army on the side.

I play Spess Mehrines for a few reasons, they're simple to paint to a basic standard, the vanilla codex is pretty handy, you can use the same models with another codex (i'm thinking about getting the sw codex, but if like it i will stick with it for a while... no flip flopping between the two cos thats a bit tfg for me!) and they have masses of good fluff.

Orks, partly because of the ability to mod the heck out of them, partly because of the fact that with said modeling and scratchbuilding, they're the cheapest army to get in some ways, but mostly 'cause of their fluff.

I have a few reasons for my Knights of Blood.
1) I find them interesting in both color scheme and background.
2)Their convenient for me as I already have a huge stock of SM parts and bodies from the years to work with.
3)They seem to be a challenge as there has been no real development on them aside from the text in Codex: Blood Angels.

I began Dark Elves because they have far and away the coolest fluff and general feel in WHFB IMHO. I also fell in love with the artwork on the front of the Spearmen box and I love the Malus Darkblade books. Well, I choosed IG because I was tired of marines and then that many IG-armys (including GW's own...) wasn't reaaly suited for any terrain.

Well, I picked conversion opportunities. I play Orks because I love just about everything about 40k, and really want to play, but I'm poor. Seriously, I barely make enough each month for rent and bills, let alone food or gas. So spending a lot of money on minis is right out. That's where Orks come in. They allow me to beg/borrow/steal/scrap/generally loot all the bits I need to run a full army.

EDIT: I forgot, I'm also collecting, rather casually I might add, a WFB Lizardmen army. I have to vote aesthetics of the models here because, well, Aztec Dinosaurs. Also, Steggies and Carnosaurs are less then $5 a piece.

Post by: Ancestral Hamster
My first army was for WHFB, and was Dark Elves because I like Elves, but didn't want to be goody-two shoes elves. Also wanted an evil army, but a more sophisticated evil: anyone can kill, but playing with one's prey until they beg you to kill them, now that's evil!
My first (and to date only) 40k army is Blood Angels, which was chosen out of convience. The friend who I started in WHFB gave me some surplus SM stuff, so I simply read assorted SM fluff and chose the Blood Angels. Part of it was the HtH orientation: at the time I was playing various games where my troops/ships/mechs were long-range snipers, and I needed a change.
However, if I had started 40k on my own I was going to go with IG. My original plan was Valhallans (this was late 90's so the figs were still in production) and going to paint them up as WWII Soviet Red Army. Would have bought the appropriate Osprey books for reference and modeling ideas. Also wanted to find reproductions of Soviet propaganda posters to scan and shrink to place on ruined buildings. So this would have been aesthetics and background, if I followed through.
Then the Praetorians came out, and that was it for the Valhallans. The Praetorians are strictly on looks. Do not have enough to actually field, although I have enough HW crews for a standard 2000pt IG codex army for 3rd ed. Since it's too pricey to get official figs, if I do build them I'll just use Wargames Factory plastics and do conversions. It woudl be cool to have greenjackets as my snipers and the Natal Mounted Volunteers as Roughriders. Not GW store or tournament legal, but oh well.
Just bought into Malifaux though, so no 2nd 40k army right now. Picked the Ramos and Rasputina crews of the Arcanists based on looks. Saw Ramos and his clockwork automatons first, and thought "Steampunk gizmos! That's my crew! (One has Crews in Malifaux, not gangs or armies). Then I saw the Rasputina figure and decided I had to have her. Now that I own her, I realize that much of what sold me on the sculpt was the paintjob: http://wyrd-games.net/shop/Rasputina-The-Ice-Witch.html
That's somewhat better than what I can do, but I will try. (May buy a second and get a pro to paint her.) So once again, it's the looks that sold me.

The main theme for my armies is Xenos. Imperial might have all the best toys but to a certain they also have the closest thing to an "easy button".
Thus far I've got an army from most of the "underdog" Codices, namely, Tau, Necrons and Nids but I'm still enjoying the game mostly because of that challenge. Beating Mech IG with Nids is an uphill battle but so worth it just for the opponent's puzzled look at the end. Still working on a counter to Vostroyan vet spam Mech IG with my Dark Eldar... All things in due time I guess.

I chose BA after about 2 years of garbage playing DA. I figured out 2 things during that time: 1) Too many kids read the fluff and decide to play smurfs due to being 'The Greatest Chapter' and 2) Shooting armies get little done and Assault armies generally lead to more fun games and are more dynamic. I was still in love with marines, and chose BA as my current army.

Space marines have always felt kind of "Mary Sue" to me, genetic super soldiers are boring. So I jumped at the idea of the guard, average men and women fighting impossible odds, there's not super human strength or reflexes, just pure grit. Imperial Guard have more character to them, Space Marines don't have much in the way of personality. I like to customize my squads, give them personal touches and so on.
