I like the colours on the legion, but dislike the bases. I don't know why, but it is to bright... As it is WIP it might be that you just brushed the colour on, but right now I don't like...
I have been looking through your blog and I saw a lot of models where really shiney. I know I am not a great painter and I do not use seallant much, but isn't it better to dullcoat?? it would make the models look nicer IMHO?? in the end it is a matter of preference though....

The problem with dull coat is that it is not as resistant to wear as gloss varnish. So if you want to protect your paint jobs you need to apply gloss first. I'll apply a coat of gloss and over it some dull coat for my metal minis because I like the matte finish, but want to protect the paint jobs the best I can.

Actually, the bases get brighter as I drybrush ghost grey on the wolf grey. Maybe I should
have went without the blue wash, but it's a little late now. Oh well.
I put on a clear satin finish because I like the shine. It also helps me remember which
models are actually done.

I used to do this. Now I just hit it with two coats of Satin and call it done.

I spray just as heavily, two coats as evenly as I can. I think what happens in some pictures
is the lighting. When I lower the lamp to a certain degree, it really reflects off the finish.
It's really obvious on my Legion of Everblight stuff. You'll see when I post it.

Maybe I should just give up and get the eyeliner and black cape.

I don't like the visible slot, but I couldn't be bothered with fixing it. Another interesting
tidbit about this model is that people call it different things.
Some refer to it as "Beast Nine"
Others call it "Beast Oh Nine"
And then there are those who call it "Why have any other warjack?"
Anyway, I'm happy with the end result.

Question about these guys:
Do you think it would look odd to have regular warriors behind them? I ask because the forward movement of the
Corsairs makes it really hard to rank them up front and back
with shields on their arms.

There's a major flaw in the second finished piece. The red ink ran onto the gray
part of the unit leader, but otherwise I'm happy.

And so the shiny alluded to earlier in the thread comes to "light". When the lamp is
positioned low enough, and the model itself has many places to catch the light, then
the Satin finish can really reflect a lot.

I am continually getting more and more envious of you. I can't seem to get myself to painting nowadays. Had a weekend a while back where I restarted playing halfLife (every part) and I have not painted since. (before that also not much, but had build and undercoated)...
The way you keep on cramming out mini's for me is amazing, although you are probably not the fastest or the best painter, they are very good for the amount of time you seemingly take to finish them. Add to that all the different projects you do at a time and I am really feeling like a slacker...
To show my point: I have almost all of my cryx to paint (about 750 points) I have a 3 buggies to build/paint and 40 or so orks to build/paint. then I can get more to fill out weapons etc... I have a chaos army that needs some additions. Some new stuff, some needs to be painted. I need to paint about half my tyranids. then I have some warriors of chaos to build/paint. I also have a completely build ogre army that needs to be completely painted. And to top it all off I have a fantasy dwarf army lying half build, waiting to see paint once fully build.
Now you know why I am envious of you. between my wife wanting attention, work and the other hobbys I just don't seem to be able to concentrate on the work before me. In fact I am now getting more depressed, as I know now what I have lying around waiting on finishing...
Maybe I just have to quit fantasy/ 40k and sell it all. then concentrate on warmachine... sigh... feeling down now...
You keep up the good work, then I will defeat all in half life and try to restart the painting ....
131
Post by: malfred
You have to understand, I HAVE to work on different projects or else I get frustrated and
bored. I shoot for the tabletop because that's the level of paint that I can stand to
achieve. Anything beyond that frustrates me and minis become abandoned.
Overall I average maybe 10-15 minis every two weeks.

Post by: malfred
LunaHound wrote:What do you do with all the different faction painted minis malf?
Why, game of course
Warmachine games can be short enough that I can get two or three in in one night, whereas
Fantasy takes so long to setup it's highly unlikely for me to get more than one game in on
any given day. So if I game once a week with Warmachine, I can get two or three games in
with one faction. At the end of the session I decide whether to forge ahead with the faction
I'm playing or switch it up and try something different next time.
I'm still best with my Protectorate of Menoth army, which isn't saying much.

Some of them are VGC, some rare few are VMC, and some are Reaper Master's. I use
the Vallejo Glaze Medium to cut my paints and that seems to help. I'm not sure if it's
supposed to and maybe it's psychological, but I like it.

Just reading through the earlier posts and this annoyed me so much. So, someone who doesn't understand the primary-school basics of the colour wheel, is giving colour advice... and wrong colour advice at that.
Opposite and complimentary colours... yeah that'd be orange and blue then.
Purple and yellow; red and green; orange and blue. Someone really knows their colour wheel! I think you learn it at about your first year in school. Degree level art it is not.

The target is that mythical 520. I know there are folks who paint faster than that, but I
never have so it'll be a nice milestone to reach and then scale down operations.
Harad Warriors are always fun to paint since you can alternate colors all over the place
and they don't necessarily need any crisp lines. So you can clean up after you apply a
wash, or you can just leave them be.
I tend to just leave them be after a wash.

I'm at least picking up the rulebook at GenCon. I was hoping they'd have a starter
set that I could demo at the store along with the other Warmachine stuff, but I haven't
seen anything that indicates a starter is on the way.

Nah, no prizes. People who sell painted minis probably pass 520 all the time, it's just
a personal goal that I want to try to reach.
The follow up to that goal is that if I hit it, I never want to try again. This is straining

This is the first time I ever made this mistake. I put one coat of sealer on the minis,

I left it on, as you can see. It's on the Gatorman leader as well as one other model.
2

Post by: RiTides
Ouch!!! Bummer :(
I've always wondered how this happens to people. How did it happen in your case? Is it just that you're painting so many minis and going in auto-pilot mode, and the primer was where your sealant usually is? Or do the labels look really similar?
Maybe everyone should mark their primer cans with a big red " X" as a precaution...
They still look good, for what it's worth . Maybe you can use the background of the leader escaping from a tar pit and living to tell about it
131
Post by: malfred
Thanks.
Yeah, I was on auto-pilot. I spray in long stretches after I've built up a collection of stuff. Usually
that means 20-40 painted figs and 20-40 assembled figs to be primed.
The process is kind of like this:
1. Seal coat one on finished minis.
2. Prime assembled minis.
3. Wait a little more time and seal coat two on finished minis.
You'll see the other fig in a few weeks or so (it's further down the queue of minis
to post to Dakka blog)

Well to be fair, Dark Elf Warriors by themselves rank up fine and Dark Elf Corsairs

fine. In fact, I think I can only make them rank up by interspersing my Dark Elf
Corsair Warrior conversions with regular Dark Elf Warriors as you see in the pictures.

Two things:
The commas are for separate tags (I think) or descriptors. So it's the game Hordes,
he's a minion, and his name is Saxon Orrik.
2. I haven't checked his scale up against 40k minis. Remember that Privateer Press

Speckle with glued sand, actually. I always base before I prime.
Blocking out the colors.

Even though they are in the early stages, they look cool.Especially in number, all arrayed on a tabletop I would guess they would look rather awesome aswell.Keep up the good work, your blog is inspiring me to get off my backside and paint stuff(although it is going slowly,LOL).

Curse your crazy fast progress, I've spent the best part of a month painting up just 6 stands of Brits! How many hours did it take to get the initial block coat down for the russians?

Pffft, I'd have taken this more to heart if you'd referenced miniatures other than 40k. But
instead, I'll just keep dreaming of painting up Warcaster Gym Leaders and evolved forms of
Warbeasts.

I guess August was the month where I'd start multiple projects and not finish them until
later. I started painting some Khador stuff soon after I started the Soviets.

An attempt to wet blend with a wash and an immediate highlight. Takes forever, and I'm
not sure if the effect worked out.

The start of my trench terrain.
These are the hardwood sections I cut with a scroll saw. The shaded areas are places I've
marked for 1" pink foam. It's based off a site that has cool resin terrain, but of course I can't
afford their prices.

Got to work on a Wave Serpent. Here I'm trying to blend.

I really love the scheme of your Eldar, I need to force you into playing a game one day just to see how the army looks!

Virus: One day. Work has stalled on the Eldar project. Trying to slow things down.

Thanks.
It helps to not have a personal life to speak of.
It also helps to bank photos in advance and trickle out the postings over time.
Here are Croe's Cutthroats.

You can see the grainy texture the model has from bad primer.

Thanks, scarab. That means a lot coming from you.
This a converted wizard using leftover High Elf parts from both the mage pack,
an extra bottom from the Archer boxed set, with a touch of Wood Elf Glade Guard.
It pays to be a tri-elf player.

I bet that sword-rock would hurt like hell if someone wacked you with it.

You want everything, Taco.
The point of the sword in the rock is that it automagically slips from the rock Excalibur
style when it's time to cut up some enemies.
This is a bunch of his brothers getting all painted up. Don't know if I'll finish them
even now (this is at a point before Gencon).

Thanks, I'll probably only do this for a year then start a new thread later on.
The last wash I got to get in before I left town for Gencon.

Those are Exemplar Bastions from the Protectorate of Menoth faction in Warmachine.
They're made of a non-styrene plastic.

And in the midst of THAT mess, I started some Dire Avengers. What a mess.

Here the Exemplar Bastions get the gold followed by a Brown Wash. I put the brown wash
on both the bone and the gold. For the bone I immediately tried to wetblend bonewhite
onto the brown wash.

I hate writing backgrounds sometimes. So I took the English major option and
wrote bad poetry. It was entertaining enough (for me).

Nice looking mumak! You need a can of matte sealer. All this gloss is hurting my eyes.

scarab wrote:Nice looking mumak! You need a can of matte sealer. All this gloss is hurting my eyes.
How dare you!
I think that's the Satin sealer reflecting off my desk lamp.
I prefer it to the Matte. One reason is going to sound really stupid: it helps me remember which minis I've
sealed. Sounds crazy, right?
But look at your minis. Which ones have you sealed. Are you sure? Really?
Okay, it's just me. I have so many different models around in various stages of development
that I'd rather not have to go through my photo files to figure out what all needs to be done.
