A Seraph and some swordsmen.

I started painting these in the same batch as my Legion stuff to use up the red paint.

More progress on the Legion of Everblight. I started painting these at the game shop on
nights when I needed to kill time before I picked up my wife.

I like the colours on the legion, but dislike the bases. I don't know why, but it is to bright... As it is WIP it might be that you just brushed the colour on, but right now I don't like...

I have been looking through your blog and I saw a lot of models where really shiney. I know I am not a great painter and I do not use seallant much, but isn't it better to dullcoat?? it would make the models look nicer IMHO?? in the end it is a matter of preference though....

The problem with dull coat is that it is not as resistant to wear as gloss varnish. So if you want to protect your paint jobs you need to apply gloss first. I'll apply a coat of gloss and over it some dull coat for my metal minis because I like the matte finish, but want to protect the paint jobs the best I can.

Actually, the bases get brighter as I drybrush ghost grey on the wolf grey. Maybe I should
have went without the blue wash, but it's a little late now. Oh well.

I put on a clear satin finish because I like the shine. It also helps me remember which
models are actually done.

I used to do this. Now I just hit it with two coats of Satin and call it done.

Your cheap ploy for attention may have won this battle malfred, but it leaves me sorely disappointed at the lack of pokemon.
But I guess as long as I'm here, those shock troopers look awesome, as does the tarnished metal on bane knights.

Thanks. I need to learn my color adjustment, but I rather like the effect as well. The skin is
darker in reality, but I think the red is spot on (if a bit messy).

These are test models using Corsair models with attached Dark Elf Warrior arms for Spearmen
with shields and repeater crossbowmen.

Getting these to rank up is going to be problematic, I can tell.

I like the corsair-conversions. They look good. Even the satin finish is not bothering me on these...

Haven't you sprayed them as heavily, or is it another brand?? Or are you getting better at making photo's or photoshop (for fixing the glare...)

Good work and keep it up...

Thanks.

I spray just as heavily, two coats as evenly as I can. I think what happens in some pictures
is the lighting. When I lower the lamp to a certain degree, it really reflects off the finish.

It's really obvious on my Legion of Everblight stuff. You'll see when I post it.

Huh. I hadn't thought of that. So now that means I'm going to have two armies that
look like Vampires (Dark Elves and Legion of Everblight).

Maybe I should just give up and get the eyeliner and black cape.

I don't like the visible slot, but I couldn't be bothered with fixing it. Another interesting
tidbit about this model is that people call it different things.

Some refer to it as "Beast Nine"
Others call it "Beast Oh Nine"
And then there are those who call it "Why have any other warjack?"

Anyway, I'm happy with the end result.

Question about these guys:

Do you think it would look odd to have regular warriors behind them? I ask because the forward movement of the
Corsairs makes it really hard to rank them up front and back
with shields on their arms.

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/03/08 23:10:44

Post by: malfred

There's a major flaw in the second finished piece. The red ink ran onto the gray
part of the unit leader, but otherwise I'm happy.

If you're referring to Beast-09 then let me clarify: it's a Warjack that has the name Beast-09.

And so the shiny alluded to earlier in the thread comes to "light". When the lamp is
positioned low enough, and the model itself has many places to catch the light, then
the Satin finish can really reflect a lot.

Really liking the Dark Elves Malfred!

The corsairs with spears look great- but if your wondering about ranking them up- how about mixing the parts up with normal warriors- especially corsair heards on normal bodies- that should do the trick

Thanks.

Hrm, I'll have to try that, Bignutter. What I'm noticing with the Corsair sprues, though, is that
out of all the extras, heads aren't very prevalent. I think there are only a couple in a box? (I could
be wrong, though).

I am continually getting more and more envious of you. I can't seem to get myself to painting nowadays. Had a weekend a while back where I restarted playing halfLife (every part) and I have not painted since. (before that also not much, but had build and undercoated)...

The way you keep on cramming out mini's for me is amazing, although you are probably not the fastest or the best painter, they are very good for the amount of time you seemingly take to finish them. Add to that all the different projects you do at a time and I am really feeling like a slacker...

To show my point: I have almost all of my cryx to paint (about 750 points) I have a 3 buggies to build/paint and 40 or so orks to build/paint. then I can get more to fill out weapons etc... I have a chaos army that needs some additions. Some new stuff, some needs to be painted. I need to paint about half my tyranids. then I have some warriors of chaos to build/paint. I also have a completely build ogre army that needs to be completely painted. And to top it all off I have a fantasy dwarf army lying half build, waiting to see paint once fully build.

Now you know why I am envious of you. between my wife wanting attention, work and the other hobbys I just don't seem to be able to concentrate on the work before me. In fact I am now getting more depressed, as I know now what I have lying around waiting on finishing...

Maybe I just have to quit fantasy/40k and sell it all. then concentrate on warmachine... sigh... feeling down now...

You keep up the good work, then I will defeat all in half life and try to restart the painting ....

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/03/17 13:16:43

Post by: malfred

You have to understand, I HAVE to work on different projects or else I get frustrated and
bored. I shoot for the tabletop because that's the level of paint that I can stand to
achieve. Anything beyond that frustrates me and minis become abandoned.

Overall I average maybe 10-15 minis every two weeks.

Your dark elf assassins look quite good. My only comments on them would be that they'd benefit from a few highlights and removing the flash! It pains me to see well painted models plagued by such an imperfection!

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/03/17 16:32:34

That's not flash, it's a low hanging lamp, but the message still applies: fix my lighting.

Yeah, my stuff can always use a few more highlights. Too bad extra highlights means
extra time spent being frustrated.

Thanks. I've been working on this army for years, and only started actually gaming with
them a couple years ago. They're very fun to play, and I'd probably go out of my way
to find games more often if it weren't for Warmachine/Hordes.

My Centurion surrounded by Pegasus Hobbies pre-painted ruined towers. They're
very cool and useful as small terrain cover. I've decided to devote a portion of my
monthly gaming budget to prefabricated terrain. By the time the wife and I can
afford to move (which would require the economy to reset a bit) I should have enough
for some hefty tables.

Yeah, well, I'd be ashamed to bring Jeremiah Kraye with an unfinished Centurion and Squire,
knowum'sayin? I DON'T think it'll turn out so great, but we'll see.

Also, I'm planning on using the DUDE with ATGM with Siege, and maybe buy the

Yes they totally rule, I have kept myself from buying them until I have couple of other figs (Thead and strangewayes mainly) painted but I may have to cave in and get em. When the opponent is running withershadow and other nasty things it is prudent to have some dirty tricks of your own.

Good start on the R2.

I didn't stick him in the chariot, unfortunately. My plan was just to be lame and stick
Korhil behind the chariot on foot. Maybe I'll convert a real chariot someday.

Why, game of course

Warmachine games can be short enough that I can get two or three in in one night, whereas
Fantasy takes so long to setup it's highly unlikely for me to get more than one game in on
any given day. So if I game once a week with Warmachine, I can get two or three games in
with one faction. At the end of the session I decide whether to forge ahead with the faction
I'm playing or switch it up and try something different next time.

I'm still best with my Protectorate of Menoth army, which isn't saying much.

Haradrim Warriors before and after washes

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/04/26 15:49:02

Post by: Cruentus

Those Haradrim look great after the wash (they looked good before as well).

What was the wash? Brush applied?

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/04/26 20:04:07

Post by: malfred

Oops, wasn't just a wash. I used bonewhite on the robes as base color.

The wash is what I usually use, Vallejo Sepia.

Yeah, I use a brush. I applied the wash to the bone colored robes, to the brown parts (including
any visible skin), and to any shiny metal parts.

Titan getting worked up and over. For some reason, I can't get the color balancing

Haha, it's actually supposed to be verdigris. Too bad I didn't intend glass.

The Ogrun with what looks like a beer is holding a mallet. I think it'll be clearer as I post the

Haha, no, sorry. I wish I had thought of that.

I think that's the Sepia wash pooling over everything. This picture was taken while the

Which colors?

Some of them are VGC, some rare few are VMC, and some are Reaper Master's. I use
the Vallejo Glaze Medium to cut my paints and that seems to help. I'm not sure if it's
supposed to and maybe it's psychological, but I like it.

Trust me, there are clumps where I didn't thin out the Gesso enough and so the stuff
pooled up and clumped.

Just reading through the earlier posts and this annoyed me so much. So, someone who doesn't understand the primary-school basics of the colour wheel, is giving colour advice... and wrong colour advice at that.
Opposite and complimentary colours... yeah that'd be orange and blue then.
Purple and yellow; red and green; orange and blue. Someone really knows their colour wheel! I think you learn it at about your first year in school. Degree level art it is not.

Your work looks much better with washes on man. Good work.
I can't help but think they are rather shiny, are you gonna dullcoat them?

Do you paint without an undercoat? Some of your earlier stuff looked that way.

Thanks.

The target is that mythical 520. I know there are folks who paint faster than that, but I
never have so it'll be a nice milestone to reach and then scale down operations.

Harad Warriors are always fun to paint since you can alternate colors all over the place
and they don't necessarily need any crisp lines. So you can clean up after you apply a
wash, or you can just leave them be.

I tend to just leave them be after a wash.

Nah, no prizes. People who sell painted minis probably pass 520 all the time, it's just
a personal goal that I want to try to reach.

The follow up to that goal is that if I hit it, I never want to try again. This is straining

This is the first time I ever made this mistake. I put one coat of sealer on the minis,
and later on when I tried to put the second coat I hit it with black primer.

I left it on, as you can see. It's on the Gatorman leader as well as one other model.

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/07/01 01:10:39

Post by: RiTides

Ouch!!! Bummer :(

I've always wondered how this happens to people. How did it happen in your case? Is it just that you're painting so many minis and going in auto-pilot mode, and the primer was where your sealant usually is? Or do the labels look really similar?

Maybe everyone should mark their primer cans with a big red "X" as a precaution...

They still look good, for what it's worth . Maybe you can use the background of the leader escaping from a tar pit and living to tell about it

Pokeminis- Gotta paint em' all! @ 2009/07/01 01:16:42

Post by: malfred

Thanks.

Yeah, I was on auto-pilot. I spray in long stretches after I've built up a collection of stuff. Usually
that means 20-40 painted figs and 20-40 assembled figs to be primed.

The process is kind of like this:

1. Seal coat one on finished minis.
2. Prime assembled minis.
3. Wait a little more time and seal coat two on finished minis.

You'll see the other fig in a few weeks or so (it's further down the queue of minis
to post to Dakka blog)

Well to be fair, Dark Elf Warriors by themselves rank up fine and Dark Elf Corsairs

fine. In fact, I think I can only make them rank up by interspersing my Dark Elf
Corsair Warrior conversions with regular Dark Elf Warriors as you see in the pictures.

Armies never end.

My friend won a raffle at GW and got the Wood Elf anniversary box. He sold it to
me for a hundred bucks and that's where I got my Treekin, a second Eagle, and
two extra units of Wild Riders.

Oh man! Not again with the black primer.

That's a big unit you got there though. Can unit attachments take you over the standard unit size? Like if the unit size is normally 6-10, but then you get like two unit attachment dudes, do you actually deploy 12 minis on the field? Or do the unit attachment dudes replace two of the basic dudes?

I like the jack too. Does the Stormclad come with a flag?

Hordini, Mark I Stormblades are maximum 6. In Mark II they are 6-10. In both versions,
they can add the Officer (dude with the cape) and standard bearer for extra points.

Also, the Stormclad comes with a flag.

I think the rules are still wip, but I love the minis too much to not paint them. It's been
tough sticking with just the Dragonlords so far.

These are wip pics of my Trollblood cavalry, the Longriders, and their leader, Horthol.

I didn't realize how many buildings would be needed for the Warmachine League, so
I came up with two solutions.

Solution 1: Freestanding walls made out of foamcore and braced/decorated with craft sticks.

Solution 2: Basswood buildings.

Not lovely and not likely to get painted anytime soon, but it'll do for now.

I miss moldlines every so often. Hate cleaning those up. It is possible you missed the bend and decided against fixing it...

Other then that and the gloss finish on the models (Made that comment a lot of pages ago ) I really like most of your work. It is a good tabletopstandard IMHO...

Thanks. There's probably little chance of me ever hitting my stuff with a dull coat. It's
a frequent comment, so you're in good company.

Can't wait to hear the local historical players comment on my shiny Soviets. That's

Anyway, here are some Guardians. Maybe I can get Tacobake to buy more of those.

I really should have been working on my Dire Avengers instead. I think I've painted
enough Guardians to last a lifetime, but I wanted to paint something familiar and
see whether or not I liked the results before I tried a new kit like the DAs.

Two things:

The commas are for separate tags (I think) or descriptors. So it's the game Hordes,
he's a minion, and his name is Saxon Orrik.

2. I haven't checked his scale up against 40k minis. Remember that Privateer Press
scales them larger, but there are models that will work with GW. There are models
that won't, however.

Thanks.

It helps to not have a personal life to speak of.

It also helps to bank photos in advance and trickle out the postings over time.

Here are Croe's Cutthroats.

You can see the grainy texture the model has from bad primer.

Thanks, scarab. That means a lot coming from you.

This a converted wizard using leftover High Elf parts from both the mage pack,
an extra bottom from the Archer boxed set, with a touch of Wood Elf Glade Guard.

It pays to be a tri-elf player.

My converted Emperor's Champion for my Black (Red) Templars, The Order of the Sword Sheathed in Stone.

Yes, he carries that rock with him into battle.

Man, I want trenches.

I bet that sword-rock would hurt like hell if someone wacked you with it.

You want everything, Taco.

The point of the sword in the rock is that it automagically slips from the rock Excalibur
style when it's time to cut up some enemies.

This is a bunch of his brothers getting all painted up. Don't know if I'll finish them
even now (this is at a point before Gencon).

Thanks, I'll probably only do this for a year then start a new thread later on.

The last wash I got to get in before I left town for Gencon.

Those are Exemplar Bastions from the Protectorate of Menoth faction in Warmachine.

They're made of a non-styrene plastic.

http://pokeminiatures.blogspot.com/2009/07/exemplar-bastions.html

And in the midst of THAT mess, I started some Dire Avengers. What a mess.

Thanks.

Here the Exemplar Bastions get the gold followed by a Brown Wash. I put the brown wash
on both the bone and the gold. For the bone I immediately tried to wetblend bonewhite
onto the brown wash.

I hate writing backgrounds sometimes. So I took the English major option and
wrote bad poetry. It was entertaining enough (for me).

Nice looking mumak! You need a can of matte sealer. All this gloss is hurting my eyes.

How dare you!

I think that's the Satin sealer reflecting off my desk lamp.

I prefer it to the Matte. One reason is going to sound really stupid: it helps me remember which minis I've
sealed. Sounds crazy, right?

But look at your minis. Which ones have you sealed. Are you sure? Really?

Okay, it's just me. I have so many different models around in various stages of development
that I'd rather not have to go through my photo files to figure out what all needs to be done.
