The elves are really showing some skills. Way neater. Sometimes your stuff looks like an epileptic monkey painted them after a pink floyd concert. These are really nice. Keep up the good work. Oh, and I meant no disrespect for people who are epileptic or pink floyd fans...or both. No offense to monkeys either.

No, that's color blind ...not epileptic. In this pic you are painting pretty much in the lines. That's the seret to good painting.. stay in the lines. Everything else comes in time. Hot yellows (that are tonally orange) do not mix well with blues. Peurple.. okay. But not blue. The first time my wife read a white dwarf she commented that someone really knew there color wheel. I said "huh?" She explained that the color selections are very simple contrasting color schemes based off a color wheel. I said "Huh?" So she pulled out a color wheel (being an art major she had one) and showed me what she meant. I said "Huh?" So, now I just paint the colors she tell me to.

Ooh, ooh, I contributed to that project. Praise me, too!
Okay, all I did was trade Felix some of the wall sections. Unsurprisingly, he's already got them in a project that's looking better than the half-finished building (which is not even an original design- I ripped off the layout from one of Panic's) in which I used what I got in return.

Okay. I can only fit so much in my bag, though. I'm having trouble figuring out how to store stuff in the house, much
less move it.
My CoD terrain is really just closed off buildings as I meant
for them for games like Necro and Infinity. The Pegasus
Buildings are REALLY basic.
So my reason for not bringing my stuff is that they'll look
really ugly next to your custom jobs.
Okay. They'll make your custom jobs look cooler.

Can there be respective without respect? Your CoD buildings are on fire as we speak. On that note, the next time we get together (Sunday maybe?), we should work on 5th-izing some of your buildings.

Pfft, Felix is the last person in the world to whom I'd ever feel any obligation to apologize for a thread hijack.
Besides, he'd get to play on the CoD terrain you were talking about. That is, if he weren't too cool to play 40K (I guess they could do some double-duty for Necromunda).

Respective = particular. Each of us lacks the ability to finish projects,
therefore, we have respective inabilities.
Grand Preceptor: Not too cool. For the time investment of a game of
40k I'd rather be playing Fantasy, Warmachine or Hordes. I'll give it
a try after 5th edition (perhaps at MikeCon), but I can't see it inspiring
me to commit my painting time to assembling a full Grey Knights army.

June vows completed:
Ancestral Guardian. Dark pic. I'll have to retake it eventually.
Skorne Immortals. I know that the basing isn't really a
good contrast for the mud-golem thing I went for, but I
like how the color matches sometimes just because it
kinda looks like the same material was used.
Titan Cannoneer. I really like how this model turned out,
and I think I like the skin enough to try it out on a Mumak
someday. The lighting doesn't like my purple paint,
though, and the ornamental domes on his back ridge
look more blue than dark purple.
I think everything from this point on is extra-bonus vows
as I didn't exactly pledge them.
The Wood Elf Lord on a Dragon is a bit mismodeled. He's
leaning an awful lot to his left on the actual model (only
slightly noticeable in the picture). Also this picture looks
a lot cleaner than the actual model, which I guess isn't
saying much.
I think the camera is generous to all my pictures.
My second Devout. I don't like how the shading went
on the white parts of the armor. For many of the models
in this series I used VGC sepia ink, and while I loved the
way it turned out on some models, I didn't like its look
on the warjack's flat panels. I wished I had used my
usual warmer browns to shade this.
Idrian skirmisher chieftain and guide. Great models.
The High Executioner Servath Reznick. What does that
scroll say, high executioner?
Of course.
Another look at his fine wrack.
I've decided that I want White Lions to be my main anvil
unit in my High Elves army. The only thing missing is a
banner for the Standard Bearer, but that shouldn't be too
difficult to do.
I decided this as I was shading the lion cloaks. I first put
down some white (it was primed black) , then VGC
Bonewhite, and when I ink washed it with VGC sepia, I
loved the look right away.
It has been a most productive month.

Reading through this thread is humbling. The pace you keep turning these nice paint jobs is amazing.
I really like your Menoth force. The original colors used for accents make them seem like your army, while with the cream you keep them linked to the studio/ fluff armies.
Those haradrim look also nice. I have one horse archer waiting somewhere to get some paint on. I may have to get him under work now to give me a break in the painting of Stryker force.

The Reavers are done. It's just two angles of the same unit. I haven't decided if I like

out melee them. I took the option of having both spear and bow in last game and

Dammit malfred, you're reminding me that I'm seriously behind on my High Elves.

Thanks.
Like I said, I hate the Spearmen with a flag attached to spearpoint standard
bearers. I'll probably get more archer kits in the far future to have more
kneelers and standards for the rest of my army.

This is the beginnings of my Cygnar army. I finished painting these models just last month. I intend to get the UA, Black 13th, and something else. I have no idea what. I do have some Trenchers a Grenadier and Siege Brisbane, but they're not very interesting to me.

I can relate to that, I have couple of trenchers still unpainted on my desk and they were among the first cygnar figs I bought.
The gun mages on the other hand look fine.

a couple o questions regarding the three "fellas" in the eskarre steam budda grouping".
1. Are you using a metallic medium to achieve the effect or is is just the photo?
2. How did you make the bases for them? That is very close to what I am looking for my sons of pus.
take care
131
Post by: malfred
Which effect? I use a satin spray for everything and sometimes overdo it
so everything is shiny.
The bases were some kind of brown. I think it was Charred > Beasty. After I sealed
the minis, I used Liquitex water effects.

thanks for the info on the bases.

Nah. That's my typical dark blue, white dry brush, blue ink process.

The sheer amount of stuff you finish boggles my mind x.x
Would it be worth my time to look at getting folks interested in Uncharted Seas? (not that I need a new game right now x.x.........)
131
Post by: malfred
None of that stuff is finished, though.
Also, I don't game quite as often as some of you. It's enough of a hassle to game that
on days that I have off it's easier to just stay home and work on some models. I also
don't go for any conversions, which speeds things up a bit.
Finally, this week I'm on break so I've been able to finish some half-finished projects like
the Treekin and the Cygnar Trenchers.
The stuff you see in the pictures probably won't get touched until next season or even
next summer, unless I get really bored.

I wasn't sure what to do with the base, so some of the parts aren't really painted to

Here they are drying on their sides as I put an ink wash on their sails. I don't think it

I'm thinking I should have just left highlighting off the whole thing. Too late!
1
131
Post by: malfred
You can see how I screwed up the sails. I just couldn't highlight them carefully enough
to make the time worthwhile, so you can see my hamfisted fattened lines all over the
ribbing of the sails. Other than that, I'm plenty pleased with myself.

Do you think a drybrush could have done the same effect for the sails? Or are those freehanded details?
They look good, and the extra effort is a good addition. But you're right there are some spots that could use a touch up here and there.
131
Post by: malfred
Yeah, whatever I do next I'll drybrush. It's just that drybrushing a
recessed location needs to be planned, and I had already done the color blocking.

So before I update with my images, here's a draft of another Work in Progress that's
been sitting on my desk until recently. I started this months ago, and then set it
aside until I had a Trukk. And then I set it aside until I had some more Boyz.
On a lark, I opened up the Trukk and put it together. Then I put more of the Boyz
together. And finally, I think I had my answer, as badly constructed as it was.
"How do you fit 10 Boyz in the back of a Trukk?"
Answer: You amputate.
6
131
Post by: malfred
As I built Shoota Boyz, I reserved some legs and some of the torsos for this
project. I think the math comes out to 23 Shoota Boyz, 2 with rokkits, 1 Nob
with power klaw and 1 10 man token for a Trukk built to field Boyz with Sluggaz.
So three boxes with a loss of maybe 4-7 models for the sake of a placeholder
token.
I've left the Crossbar off the trukk. I had planned to try to thread it through as
part of the mass of Boyz, but since I'd already started gluing the Boyz together
(quite literally) I found the weapon placements made it somewhat impossible to
pull off.
As you can see from the pics, I miscalculated some of my positioning, and
my visible Boyz now hover a bit. I think the coolness of glued Ork bodies will
somewhat offset the loss of verisimilitude.

I think I can field 20-30 of these, but these are my first of the newer sculpts. I was
pretty pleased with them, too, until I saw a similar scheme elsewhere on Dakka
recently that was done with much better quality. Maybe I try to pick alt schemes
because I can't paint the regular ones as well as others.
I haven't assembled any Guardians yet. I can't decide how to paint things that
both match my old Eldar scheme and something that resembles a Harlequin army. Some
people gave me good ideas (painting stage masks on Guardian helmets for one), but
the colors aren't there yet.

Thank you. I was afraid that the green would be too much. The blue is a Vallejo ink, but
I'm guessing it's the same. I'm so lazy that I use it both for High Elf metal AND the robes.

The pain was figuring out which hands went with which models. Certainly some of
them WORK with both lifting and at attention, but if you look closely at their wrists
you can tell that there's something a bit off about them. If you don't normally have
trouble with gluing GW wrists, then it should be no problem. I use GS + Zap.
I have ten Phoenix Guard already painted. These 10 were going to bring the number
up to 20. My future list opted to cut out 10 PG and go with White Lion Chariots and
other things suggested to me in WHFB Tactics.

Post by: Hordini
Malfred, I really like what you are going for with the verdigris on the Bane Knights, and I think that you are right on the edge of really good execution.
I think the problem is, it almost looks like paint, rather than corrosion. When you tell me you're going for verdigris, I'm like "Oh yes, I can totally see that," but I think if I didn't know that is what you were going for, I might be like "Hmm interesting pastel green there on the Bane Knights." I think the color choices are really cool and the verdigris is going to work well in the end though.
I think the main areas that need work are the flat bits on the weapons. I think the verdigris corrosion is more evident on the armor, where you sort of have some bronze color highlighted on the raised bits. I think if you edged the raised bits on the weapons in bronze a bit, and maybe but a few bronze "scratches" in the verdigris, the effect would come off a lot better.
Another option would be to maybe go a little more the opposite: Focus on getting most of the metal areas in bronze, and then just have bits of verdigris showing, maybe 60/40 bronze/verdigris. Or the other way around.
At this point if you're worried about screwing stuff up though, I'd do a test model.
I hope this helps, sorry I don't really have a specific technique, I've never gone for a verdigris effect myself, but maybe I ought to now.

Malfred, I've found that if you want to do corroded metal, especially on miniatures with lots of flat spots, it's best to use textured spray undercoat. I did that on some of my Ork Nobz and it really makes their weapons look old and worn, since the flat areas don't look so flat.

makes sense. Haven't tried that before (at least, not intentionally).

Textured paint is a good idea!
If you don't want to spray the whole model with textured paint, but only want to have it on a few areas, you can make your own and brush it on.
All you have to do is get a bit of fine sand (however fine you want really) and mix it in the paint really good. Just add a bit at first and try it out, then add more as needed. It works really well. I used it on my terrain board (although I used a house paint brush for that ).

WOW!
I'm impressed!
I paint for the tabletop too just to get stuff done to play but my stuff looks nowhere near as awesome yours! (A blind guy could probably do better than me!)
I also like that I'm not the only ADD gamer here! I play Protectorate for Warmachine, Trolls for Hordes and Space Marines for 40K. (With some Tyranids being started soon and Empire that has been a WIP for about 4 years now.)
The High Elves have a nice clean color scheme but could use some good shading. I suggest either DiDi's Magic Sauce, Wonder Wash inks, Army Painter Quick Shade, or the new GW washes. All of which would give you great looking results depending on what your preference for shading is. Same goes for the Circle and skorne minis. they look great but could use some shading and a finish highlight.
I'm the worst, slowest painter in the world so none of this is criticism. I'm just hoping that my comments help someone else pull off what I can't seem to...a great looking army with minimal effort.
Most of my stuff gets the Army Painter technique applied to them:
Prime
Basecoat
Shade Dip
Minimal Highlight
Seal
(Sometimes a final highlight over the varnish if I'm not too lazy that day.)
It's the quickest way to do an army I've found so far!
Your stuff looks great! Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks. How would you characterize the difference between Quick Shade/Magic Sauce vs.
what I do using Vallejo inks?

Trencher Officer and Sharpshooter.
It amuses me that Trenchers don't get a Standard Bearer since they're supposed
to be all nitty gritty. Too bad they didn't have something like a Super Shoveler as opposed
to a sniper.

Remember that I put shiny varnish so the highest highlights I think are turning out to
be flare.

Mostly cause the Trencher Chaingun does the same thing for cheaper.

The Trencher Chaingun is a terrible chioce no matter whose the caster is.
10" range, no move and shoot, no aim bonus, and all your opponent has to do to dick it over is to move infantry units into skirmish formation? No thanks.

Also because they made the Jeremiah Kraye rules a nice fit for warjacks like the
Charger and the Sentinel.

Well snipe adds to the value of the sentinel, so also pStryker and Haley get to play. And if you add Strangewayes to the mix, other warcasters can enjoy some chaingun madness.
The trencher chain gun on the other hand is useless, as the range and immobility really hose for other that area denial purposes.

True enough, but usually you can give snipe to something more fun
I think I'd rather have Iron Horse.

I'm debating whether or not to bring Jeremiah Kraye to my weekly game. In order to run him,
though, I'll have to use unpainted models (oh noez!)

The game is called Warmachine. There's a forum here on Dakka for it.
Anyway, nice work Malf! I'm sure I'll see these in person some time soon.

Warjacks are in Warmachine. Trouble is you won't see too many of them unless someone
is selecting a particular faction or warcaster (commanders in Warmachine) who syncs
with them well. In this instance, I'm using them for Jeremiah Kraye, a cavalry warcaster. His
rules complement multiple light warjacks and I have plans to paint a heavy for them.
131
Post by: malfred
Jeremiah Kraye is also done at last. All I have left to do for a basic 500 point Warmachine
army is buy and paint the Squire and paint a Centurion (already primed, but not on the
paint queue till next month).

Kraye looks good! The stone on the base is nice with the staining and lifts focus from the base to the horse and rider. Nice work overall.
I'll have to pick one up myself, the fig is gorgeous and not too shabby on the tabletop either I've heard.

Thanks. The rules are very nice and go with my chosen warjacks. Though if I recall correctly,
I picked the warjacks based on Kraye's rules rather than the other way around.

I'm afraid of heavy armor, see through smoke, and command effects ruining such an
army. That's why my list has both a Grenadier and a Centurion. I generally don't play
spam armies unless there's a very good reason.

Yeah, when I run Trencher Spam(now with 100% more Cannon), I always make sure Jr. or my main caster brings a Hunter buddy along for the ride, just in case of serious heavy armor. Of course, in every game I'm one of those weird fluffy/play what I like the looks of people.

Vallejo bright bronze washed with Vallejo Sepia ink (probably very similar to
Devlan Mud, though I'm not sure). I can't remember if I highlighted with
straight up bright bronze or if I added silver to the mix or if I got REALLY lazy
and used silver on the bronze.

playing lots of armies and lots of options.

A block of 20 Corsairs. I'm still trying to figure out how I want the army to work, but
visually I like the look of 25 Corsair blocks. That probably means it's not going to be
effective, but I'll plan the modeling based on the looks for now since I spend more time
painting than playing.
