It's still soooo cool.
Seriously, most scratch-built titans look too flat, with no texture or detail -- and thus, well, scratch-built.
Whereas your project bristles with chaotic doohickeys and whatnot. And as a result, looks entirely authentic and in keeping with 40K.
Convincingly menacing, in short. Well done.

Thanks again everyone, the appreciation for the project is really helping me stay on top of trying to finish the Banelord. It will be a holiday weekend in the United States, so I'm hoping to have lots of pictures to share by Monday.
@Goliath - haha, sorry if you're a Salamanders player. I used a techmarine torso, so I'm debating between Iron Hands and Salamanders, and like the Sallies only because I think the bright green would work against all the red on the model.
@Dimside - Unfortunately I don't have a schedule for the model. When the Apocalypse Banelord pdf came out, I was lucky to find some plastic shells that were perfect for the carapace and leg armor. I have some intial sketchs I did, but my construction style is very haphazard, where I raid my bitz box and see what fits and work the design around that.

I don't know if these are common in France, but FiddleStix are a type of children's toy I used to create the framework for the legs and arms of the Banelord. They're fairly inexpensive and you get a lot of options for joints and length.
I don't know how much help I could be with your warhound/banelord project, but if you have any specific questions or want photos of the model, let me know.

This is the very pinnacle of the craft. I simply cannot fathom how this model is so clean, and yet has such a depth of detail. It is a model to study, to take notes, and to learn from. You have created a model that no one else has, and managed to make it look effortless.
Thanks for showing this, I can't wait to see it finished.

Post by: ratmkith
Thank you all for the comments, I'm glad to say progress on the painting front is coming along at a steady pace. I was able to take advantage of the weekend, and get most of the cannon, head and torso to about 90% finished each.
Here is a shot of the torso, I was able to glue the hip armor in place and start on the skeleton banner in front. I'm slowly getting the hang of painting bone, and having fun with the Citadel Wash (Badab Black and Devlan Mud are my new favorite things).
The head just needs some touch up in the back, before I can glue it in place. I'm happy with how the reaper autocannons came out, but unfortunately the side photos did not come out at all. Just glad the cow skull came out okay.
And finally the Hellstrike Cannon, for some reason this photo did not come out...not sure if the blue shield color throws off the model.
My plan is to color the banners either grey/white or purple. The grey/white is more subtle, but I'd like to use purple, unfortunately not sure if it would be too gaudy (and not Khorne enough). What do you guys think?
9711
Post by: Morgrim
That subtle dark blue works perfectly. It makes it look like blue steel, or some very dark metallic surface and I think it fits in perfectly with the red and brighter metallics of the piece.
If you keep the purples rather reddish and warm and use them sparingly, they should work fine on the banners. Adding a drop of scab red will help.
15358
Post by: Vitruvian XVII
Those washes sure are good! On the banelord side of things, this is awesome!! I agree with Morgrim in that the blue is fine on the shiels. Personally i would go with a white/ grey on the banners with heretical texts written in blood. I think you'd get a bit more contrast that way.

It looks fantastic but something has been bothering me about the legs and I just figured it out.
They only have 2 bits, the warhound has 3 sections to its legs, as does the sentinel. I think that would have looked better as it allows the legs to fold under the machine if that makes any sense.
Anywhoo, dont accept critisism from me, I could never build anything like what you have accomplished.

Thanks again everybody, apologies for the lack of updates...it's not that I haven't been painting, but it's mostly boring detail stuff that didn't seem to warrant photos or updates. I've been trying to finish detailing the legs and back of the model, as the tail is pretty much ready to be pinned on. While I'm not trying to be lazy or lessen the model, I am trying to simplify the painting so that I can finish the Banelord and move on to my other projects.
@ Coup777 - Thanks, I had never played Epic, so I had to track down reference photos of the old Epic Banelord when I started. My modeling philosophy is the path of least resistance, and whatever bitz work, so had to alter it a bit from the original model.
@ Sleazy - Yes the legs have been a bit of a problem since I started. I originally wanted to do the 3 portion legs, but stability and bitz made it impossible.
I'm hoping to have photos of the head and tail attached by the end of the week. Automatically Appended Next Post: Got home today and was motivated to get a good chunk of painting done...luckily was able to get the Battle Head complete and glued on to the body. While alot of the detail ended up being hidden under the cowling, I have to say I'm happy with the results, especially how the cable tucked in nicely.
Now it's onto more detail on getting the tail pinned on...

You know it's poor design and planning, when your model keeps poking you. While I'm very happy with the way the tail came out, I have to say painting it is not very fun
Anyways, I got most of the tail done, with the exception of the weapon detail on the tip. I still haven't glued it into place, but I wanted to bluetac it to get an idea of how it would look. Here's a quick preview, hopefully the next photos will have it glued and pinned in.
I screwed up during building and put the armor plating on the bottom side. But I realized most incoming fire would be coming from below, so I guess tactically it makes sense.
Once the tail gets glued on, I actually won't be able to put it on a shelf. I don't even know how I'm going to transport this beast around for games.
And finally a full body shot...enjoy!

I think the solution is to simply play every game in your bathroom.
Toilet rolls as scenery, craters made of toothpaste, loosing dice down the drains, weird nurgle like sounds and smells - all good fun!
Added advantage - if I had to face an awesome looking Banelord like that, I may need ready access to the bathroom to avoid soiling my self!
Great work - inspiring!

You can buy a truck! It would be enought to transport that wonderful baby!!
Your work is very amazing, but I think the position of the tail is not the best.
In my idea, I see the tail in the position of a scorpion tail, getting up as yours but throwing the floor, because the weapon on the tail shots only 24ps! Do you understood what I mean? (Sorry my english isn't perfect...)

Yep. Caused by radiation on Nocturne. Pitch black with red eyes. Radiation means no hair either, but to be honest I've had enough bald and screaming to last me another lifetime
Love this thing. The reverse knees are looking a bit better than I originally thought, but they still look a bit goofy.
5702
Post by: ratmkith
As much as I love the Salamander fluff, I always had a problem with the black skin/red eyes (at least from a painting point of few). I always thought it made the model seem a bit unpainted, and didn't make too much sense. So even though it's not quite up to the history, I decided to paint the Salamander with the dark brown skin instead.

Sides, if someone with pitch black skin lost that much blood, I'm sure they'd get a little paler and their skin would appear dark brown, right?

I've been a bit burnt out with the Titan, so took to organizing my unpainted figures and preparing my next armies ( FW Drop Troop Cadians and BFSK Night Goblins). Among the piles of unpainted and half painted figures I came across the Valhallan Captain Chenkov figure that I decided to finish.
So it doesn't have anything to do with Khorne or the Banelord, but it kept me sane:
I used the GW matte varnish, so it came off a little bit shiny. Can anyone recommend a US based dull coat to use?
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
I use a Krylon matte spray. Got it at Walmart for about 3.50...
I just got done spraying my Orks and marines, and it works pretty well. not very shiny at all.

BlackDracoSLC wrote:Sides, if someone with pitch black skin lost that much blood, I'm sure they'd get a little paler and their skin would appear dark brown, right?
Umm... No? Would Grey not be a step down from black? You know, considering Black, White, and Grey are -shades-, not colours.
Also: Chenkov has a bad habit of running hundreds of infantry waves into enemy guns until they either run out of ammo or the infantry close with them. All that death and there must be -some- blood. And by some, I mean a lot.
So he's kind of Khornate?
20564

Chenkov isn't so much Khornate as not all that smart.
And the Banelord is beautiful; the eviscerated Marines are a nice touch and I especially like what you've done with the talons.

Post by: ratmkith
Sorry for the lack of updates, but finding less time to work on the Banelord, even as I come into the home stretch of the project. I was able to get some work on the tail and specifically the Tail Weapon itself. As the game rules make it both a shooting weapon and a close combat weapon, I went with a power blade and lascannon combo. I still have some details to pick out, but I'm hoping to have it done and attached to the model shortly.
I wanted a color that contrasted well with the red, so went with a dark purple with extreme highlights. Luckily it also contrasts well with gold, so will be doing the detailing in gold as well.
The rivets were originally painted red, but the tail was looking too flat. I went back and did each rivet in silver and will try and add some weathering.
I still have details on the torso to complete before I can put on the tail...so hopefully I can get alot done before the next update.

Oh, I can clearly see a mental image of this Banelord go frenzy. Awesome kitbash, nice use of vampire counts bits, and to mention the paintjob: loving it!
At first, I found the legs a bit big for the body, but the more I looked at them, the more I liked the overall picture. The addition of the tail balances the whole model nicely, so this is a 12 out of 10 build.
And those eviscerated loyalists marines, they should be lucky and cheering with joy to be hung up as trophies on such a beautiful War-Engine dedicated to Khorne!
Good sir, I salute you for doing such an awesome job on building this magnificent death-dealing behemoth!

Thanks for the comments everybody.
@Deadly Chicken - Cosmic is correct, I took the fin off the drop pod, and filed the edge down to make a blade. It's held together between Predator Lascannon sponsons and random bitz. The tail itself has a aluminum rod base with the segments made of plasticard and plastirod. Rectangles and triangles pieces were cut in decreasing size and finished off with plastirod rivets and chaos icon spikes.
@ Person Person - I think the dramatic reds and purples definitely make the model stand out compared to some of the more drab titans. Although once you see the model in person the large segments aren't very forgiving and you can see the paint transitions aren't that smooth.
@ FerrumIgnatus - Thanks for the comments...the legs are a bit crazy, but once all the other limbs are attached I think it should work pretty well.
I'll be moving and on vacation over the next two weeks, but hopefully I'll be able to get a few more updates before then.

Don't worry folks, neither I nor this project is dead yet.
After a month of sitting idle, I decided to finish the tail and cannon arm painting and pin those suckers onto the body. While all the detail work hasn't been painted, trying to get everything was holding this project back. I figure, no one would be able to see the parts I'm worried about anyways, so I'm putting together whatever I can to speed to the finish.
Assembly on the doom fist still has a little ways to go...and then it's just a bit of painting before this sucker's done!
And apologies for not answering the last few questions:
@ WillFrost - I started around February of this year, so about nine months that I've been working on the Banelord.
@ Gretar - I'm planning on holding onto this for a while, I may bring it to the Los Angeles Battle Bunker and see if there's a spot in their display case in the future, but it'll be in my game room for the time being.

I'm glad to report that the Doom Fist is now completely built. This represents the last piece to be built, so after this, it's only painting that I have left. The Doom Fist was always the hardest component of the model to get, as I never had a complete picture of how I wanted it to look. So after a lot of trial and error, I added the teeth to the chainsaw, figured out how to add a thumb I was happy with, and add several hoses to represent the hydraulic and flamer systems.

Thanks guys, painting on the DoomFist is coming along nicely. I accidentally left my camera at work, but I should have pictures later tonight. Once the arm goes on, all I have left is to add some armor where the tail meets the body, and then all the little detail spots I saved for last.
@belial - BTW love your photo...in terms of adding the speakers, it would be awesome, but my buddy tried something like that a few years ago, and unless the speakers are amplified, it gets hard to hear. But I am looking to add some type of sign (I have one FW Khorne resin icon left just for this purpose).
@Vulkan_He'stan - The leg design will forever be the dividing factor with this model :-) And nothing personal with the choice in Salamanders, it's just the green paintjob that best contrasted with the red model.

As promised, here are some photos of the Doom Fist with some paint on it. Hopefully the detail is a bit easier to make out, now that the various parts can be distinguished from one another. I'm planning on on painting the hose leading to the flamer in yellow/black hazard striping, so it will take a while, but I think it will really pop out.
Here's the back of the arm with the weapon details.
Here's a bit more detail of the claw, hopefully you can make out the three fingers.
Luckily the test fit revealed that the arm is a snug fit.
And finally head on...
Here's hoping the rest of the painting goes smoothly, hopefully I can make it the Tanksgiving at the LA bunker, but with family plans, that's far from definite.

Thanks for the comments everyone, sorry for the lack of updates but holiday and work have been getting in the way.
@WillFrost - The Doomfist is nearly done (I just need to take photos). After that, what I have left is detail on the legs, tail, power plant, banner and FW icon on the pelvis.

Hey Everybody, just a quick note...the network at my place died so I haven't been able to access the internet at home. Work on the Banelord continues and photos are being taken, but I can't upload them at work. Hopefully I'll have a big update once everything get's fixed.

Happy New Year Everybody...and to celebrate, here is a long overdue update to the blog.
I'm happy to report that the network issue at my home has been resolved, and more importantly, construction of the Banelord is now complete. All that's left is to paint some details, and it should be ready to rampage across tables in no time. Here are the latest photos of the now, nearly complete Banelord.
Here is the Doomfist arm now attached to the model, you can also see the eviscerated Salamander marine chained to the shoulder.
Detail shot of the Doomfist.
Shot of the opposite shoulder with the eviscerated Imperial Fist marine, also chained to the shoulder.
Detail shot of the FW Khorne icon, I was very happy with the way the bone came out on this one. Just have the horns to finish.
I love these low shots...the last thing an enemy would see I guess :-)
One shot for scale purposes...
Another shot for scale purposes...what is that figure?
My fiance asked me to paint a figure for her, so I thought a female Inquisitor was the perfect choice.
And one more shot of the Inquisitor. Just a few more details and I'll be ready to close this blog.

I am having trouble maintaining perspective on this one. You did an incredible job...not just on the design and labor, but on the sheer force of will and focus to bring this concept to fruition. It's an amazing piece, and you should be quite proud of it.
What's next, a Chaos Imperator? It may not be practical, but it IS fluffy.
Again, great job. I can't wait to see pics of it on the table with other models.

Damn that's huge... Seeing it (almost) fully painted really makes you realize what a monstrosity it really is.... Great work!

That is absolutely fantastic! A brilliant use of bits- I can't believe I've only stumbled on this blog now, I feel like I've missed out!
Only change I'd make (and I realise its too late) would be to reposition the legs so that it was striding forward.
Anyway, brilliant job- you should be incredibly proud of that monstrosity!

I like your Banelord, but considering the Banelord is generally 9 structure points, etc. etc., perhaps it would be better entitled a Banehound, keeping in sizer comparison to the usual titan sizes, lol. I'd personally have a hard time accepting a warhoundy beast gaining 6 sp just because it's Khorny

Well a 40k scale Warlord is supposed to be 24"-ish tall so it doesn't look to far of scale IMO.

Thanks for the comments everybody...you know you've hit the big time when you have motivational posters made of your work. It's greatly appreciated.
And in response to the questions of what's next, I think I'll be avoiding Titans for a while. I have a city fight table and an IG army that have been begging to be finished. I'll be starting separate blogs for those as well.
As for the Banelord, hopefully it'll be 100% complete over this coming weekend.

Congrats for not only building one very impressive Titan, but for PAINTING it aswell. And very well so! I feel this needs special mention, for most folks build giant machines which end up to stay unpaited.
Great beast!

Thanks again everyone...
@Warflag - You are correct sir, building the Banelord was relatively easy. It's the painting part of the project that's been kicking my ass.
@Disjointed Entity - In addition to the finished Banelord photos, the plan is to have photos of the IG figures and City Fight table in the last update to this blog. I'll try and have vote of what you guys think I should do next.

Oh I wish this project was over...but I have that last 2% to finish before I can officially close out this blog. Getting engaged and idiots at work have kept me off the painting bench for the last few months.
I still have the following left to paint:
- New chains that I added to the carapace to hide the arm joints.
- Banner that will hang from the FW Icon.
- Power unit and smoke stacks.
- Tail joint and armor.
- Miscellaneous skulls and banners.
- The base
Hopefully some time will open up, but I can't say for sure. Thanks for everyone's support, I'll try and have it done and some awesome photos to finish this blog and move on to the next project(s).

I really like this, best banelord I've seen in a while! However, the posing of the legs are so dissapointing. I mean...he looks like he's about to topple forward. I think one leg positiononed forward and one back like it is now would make the model alot more dynamic. Right now, it's terribly static, and for me, is being ruined by the legs.
